Nonlinear screening in two-dimensional electron gases

We have performed self-consistent calculations of the nonlinear screening of a point charge Z in a two-dimensional electron gas using a density functional theory method. We find that the screened potential for a Z=1 charge supports a bound state even in the high density limit where one might expect perturbation theory to apply. To explain this behaviour, we prove a theorem to show that the results of linear response theory are in fact correct even though bound states exist.

Accidental suppression of Landau damping of the transverse breathing mode in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates

We study transverse radial oscillations of an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate using finite temperature simulations, in the context of a recent experiment at ENS. We demonstrate the existence of a mode corresponding to an in-phase collective oscillation of both the condensate and thermal cloud. Excitation of this mode accounts for the very small damping rate observed experimentally, and we find excellent quantitative agreement between experiment and theory. In contrast to other condensate modes, interatomic collisions are found to be the dominant damping mechanism in this case.

Modelling Bose-condensed gases at finite temperatures with $N$-body simulations

We consider a model of a dilute Bose-Einstein condensed gas at finite temperatures, where the condensate coexists in a trap with a cloud of thermal excitations. Within the ZGN formalism, the dynamics of the condensate is described by a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, while the thermal cloud is represented by a semiclassical kinetic equation. Our numerical approach simulates the kinetic equation using a cloud of representative test particles, while collisions are treated by means of a Monte Carlo sampling technique. A full 3D split-operator Fast Fourier Transform method is used to evolve the condensate wavefunction. We give details regarding the numerical methods used and discuss simulations carried out to test the accuracy of the numerics. We use this scheme to simulate the monopole mode in a spherical trap. The dynamical coupling between the condensate and thermal cloud is responsible for frequency shifts and damping of the condensate collective mode. We compare our results to previous theoretical approaches, not only to confirm the reliability of our numerical scheme, but also to check the validity of approximations which have been used in the past.

Quadrupole collective modes in trapped finite-temperature Bose-Einstein condensates

Finite temperature simulations are used to study quadrupole excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. We focus specifically on the m=0 mode, where a long-standing theoretical problem has been to account for an anomalous variation of the mode frequency with temperature. We explain this behavior in terms of the excitation of two separate modes, corresponding to coupled motion of the condensate and thermal cloud. The relative amplitudes of the modes depends sensitively on the temperature and on the frequency of the harmonic drive used to excite them. Good agreement with experiment is found for appropriate drive frequencies.

Dynamical instability of a condensate induced by a rotating thermal gas

We study surface modes of the condensate in the presence of a rotating thermal cloud in an axisymmetric trap. By considering collisions that transfer atoms between the condensate and noncondensate, we find that modes which rotate in the same sense as the thermal cloud damp less strongly than counter-rotating modes. We show that above a critical angular rotation frequency, equivalent to the Landau stability criterion, the co-rotating mode becomes dynamically unstable, leading to the possibility of vortex nucleation. This kind of mechanism is proposed as a natural explanation for the formation of vortices observed recently in the experiment of Haljan \emph{et al} {[}P. C. Haljan \emph{et al.}, cond-mat/0106362{]}. We also generalize our stability analysis to treat the case where the stationary state of the condensate already possesses a single vortex.

Dynamical Simulations of Trapped Bose Gases at Finite Temperatures

In this paper, we develop a numerical procedure for investigating the dynamics of trapped Bose gases based on the ZGN theory. The dynamical equations used consist of a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate order parameter and a semiclassical kinetic equation for the thermal cloud. The former is solved using a fast Fourier transform split-operator technique while the Boltzmann equation is treated by means of N-body simulations. The two components are coupled by mean fields as well as collisional processes that transfer atoms between the two. This scheme has been applied to a model equilibration problem, dipole oscillations in isotropic traps and scissors modes in anisotropic traps. In the case of the latter, the frequencies and damping rates of the condensate mode have been extracted from the simulations for a wide range of temperatures. Good agreement with recent experiments has been found.

Finite-temperature simulations of the scissors mode in Bose-Einstein condensed gases

The dynamics of a trapped Bose-condensed gas at finite temperatures is described by a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate order parameter and a semi-classical kinetic equation for the thermal cloud, solved using $N$-body simulations. The two components are coupled by mean fields as well as collisional processes that transfer atoms between the two. We use this scheme to investigate scissors modes in anisotropic traps as a function of temperature. Frequency shifts and damping rates of the condensate mode are extracted, and are found to be in good agreement with recent experiments.

Magnetoplasmon excitations in an array of periodically modulated quantum wires

Motivated by the recent experiment of Hochgraefe et al., we have investigated the magnetoplasmon excitations in a periodic array of quantum wires with a periodic modulation along the wire direction. The equilibrium and dynamic properties of the system are treated self-consistently within the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsaecker approximation. A calculation of the dynamical response of the system to a far-infrared radiation field reveals a resonant anticrossing between the Kohn mode and a finite-wavevector longitudinal excitation which is induced by the density modulation along the wires. Our theoretical calculations are found to be in excellent agreement with experiment.

Condensate growth in trapped Bose gases

We study the dynamics of condensate formation in an inhomogeneous trapped Bose gas with a positive interatomic scattering length. We take into account both the nonequilibrium kinetics of the thermal cloud and the Hartree-Fock mean-field effects in the condensed and the noncondensed parts of the gas. Our growth equations are solved numerically by assuming that the thermal component behaves ergodically and that the condensate, treated within the Thomas-Fermi approximation, grows adiabatically. Our simulations are in good qualitative agreement with experiment, however important discrepancies concerning details of the growth behaviour remain.

Two-fluid hydrodynamics of a Bose gas including damping from normal fluid transport coefficients

We extend our recent work on the two-fluid hydrodynamics of the condensate and non-condensate in a trapped Bose gas by including the dissipation associated with viscosity and thermal conduction. For purposes of illustration, we consider the hydrodynamic modes in the case of a uniform Bose gas. A finite thermal conductivity and shear viscosity give rise to a damping of the first and second sound modes in addition to that found previously due to the lack of diffusive equilibrium between the condensate and non-condensate. The relaxational mode associated with this equilibration process is strongly coupled to thermal fluctuations and reduces to the usual thermal diffusion mode above the Bose-Einstein transition. In contrast to the standard Landau two-fluid hydrodynamics, we predict a damped mode centered at zero frequency, in addition to the usual second sound doublet.

Magnetoplasmon excitations in arrays of circular and noncircular quantum dots

We have investigated the magnetoplasmon excitations in arrays of circular and noncircular quantum dots within the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsäcker approximation. Deviations from the ideal collective excitations of isolated parabolically confined electrons arise from local perturbations of the confining potential as well as interdot Coulomb interactions. The latter are unimportant unless the interdot separations are of the order of the size of the dots. Local perturbations such as radial anharmonicity and noncircular symmetry lead to clear signatures of the violation of the generalized Kohn theorem. In particular, the reduction of the local symmetry from SO(2) to $C_4$ results in a resonant coupling of different modes and an observable anticrossing behaviour in the power absorption spectrum. Our results are in good agreement with recent far-infrared (FIR) transmission experiments.

Effects of temperature upon the collapse of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a gas with attractive interactions

We present a study of the effects of temperature upon the excitation frequencies of a Bose-Einstein condensate formed within a dilute gas with a weak attractive effective interaction between the atoms. We use the self-consistent Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov treatment within the Popov approximation and compare our results to previous zero temperature and Hartree-Fock calculations The metastability of the condensate is monitored by means of the $l=0$ excitation frequency. As the number of atoms in the condensate is increased, with $T$ held constant, this frequency goes to zero, signalling a phase transition to a dense collapsed state. The critical number for collapse is found to decrease as a function of temperature, the rate of decrease being greater than that obtained in previous Hartree-Fock calculations.

Dynamics of trapped Bose gases at finite temperatures

Starting from an approximate microscopic model of a trapped Bose-condensed gas at finite temperatures, we derive an equation of motion for the condensate wavefunction and a quantum kinetic equation for the distribution function for the excited atoms. The kinetic equation includes collisions between the condensate and non-condensate atoms ($C_{12}$), in addition to collisions between the excited atoms as described by the Uehling-Uhlenbeck ($C_{22}$) collision integral. Assuming that the $C_{22}$ collision rate is sufficiently rapid to produce a local equilibrium Bose distribution, the kinetic equation can be used to derive hydrodynamic equations for the non-condensate. These equations include a description of the equilibration of the local chemical potentials of the condensate and non-condensate components which gives rise to a new relaxational mode associated with the exchange of atoms between the two components. We show how the Landau two-fluid equations emerge in the frequency domain $ωτ_μ\ll 1$, where $τ_μ$ is a characteristic relaxation time of the equilibration process. This process provides an additional source of damping of the collective modes (first and second sound in the case of a uniform system). Our equations are consistent with the generalized Kohn theorem. Finally, a variational solution of the equations is developed which is used to determine some of the monopole, dipole and quadrupole normal modes of a trapped Bose gas in an isotropic trap.

Two-fluid dynamics for a Bose-Einstein condensate out of local equilibrium with the non-condensate

We extend our recent work on the two-fluid hydrodynamics of a Bose-condensed gas by including collisions involving both condensate and non-condensate atoms. These collisions are essential for establishing a state of local thermodynamic equilibrium between the condensate and non-condensate. Our theory is more general than the usual Landau two-fluid theory, to which it reduces in the appropriate limit, in that it allows one to describe situations in which a state of complete local equilibrium between the two components has not been reached. The exchange of atoms between the condensate and non-condensate is associated with a new relaxational mode of the gas.

Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsacker hydrodynamics in laterally modulated electronic systems

We have studied the collective plasma excitations of a two-dimensional electron gas with an arbitrary lateral charge-density modulation. The dynamics is formulated using a previously developed hydrodynamic theory based on the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsacker approximation. In this approach, both the equilibrium and dynamical properties of the periodically modulated electron gas are treated in a consistent fashion. We pay particular attention to the evolution of the collective excitations as the system undergoes the transition from the ideal two-dimensional limit to the highly-localized one-dimensional limit. We also calculate the power absorption in the long-wavelength limit to illustrate the effect of the modulation on the modes probed by far-infrared (FIR) transmission spectroscopy.

Phonon drag thermopower and weak localization

Previous experimental work on a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas in a Si-on-sapphire device led to the conclusion that both conductivity and phonon drag thermopower $S^g$ are affected to the same relative extent by weak localization. The present paper presents further experimental and theoretical results on these transport coefficients for two very low mobility 2D electron gases in $δ-$doped GaAs/Ga$_x$Al$_{1-x}$As quantum wells. The experiments were carried out in the temperature range 3-7K where phonon drag dominates the thermopower and, contrary to the previous work, the changes observed in the thermopower due to weak localization were found to be an order of magnitude less than those in the conductivity. A theoretical framework for phonon drag thermopower in 2D and 3D semiconductors is presented which accounts for this insensitivity of $S^g$ to weak localization. It also provides transparent physical explanations of many previous experimental and theoretical results.

Excitations of a Bose-condensed gas in anisotropic traps

We investigate the zero-temperature collective excitations of a Bose-condensed atomic gas in anisotropic parabolic traps. The condensate density is determined by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation using a spherical harmonic expansion. The GP eigenfunctions are then used to solve the Bogoliubov equations to obtain the collective excitation frequencies and mode densities. The frequencies of the various modes, classified by their parity and the axial angular momentum quantum number, m, are mapped out as a function of the axial anisotropy. Specific emphasis is placed upon the evolution of these modes from the modes in the limit of an isotropic trap.

Sound propagation in a cylindrical Bose-condensed gas

We study the normal modes of a cylindrical Bose condensate at $T = 0$ using the linearized time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the Thomas-Fermi limit. These modes are relevant to the recent observation of pulse propagation in long, cigar-shaped traps. We find that pulses generated in a cylindrical condensate propagate with little spread at a speed $c = \sqrt{g\bar n /m}$, where $\bar n$ is the average density of the condensate over its cross-sectional area.
