Depth Development of Extensive Air Showers from Muon Time Distributions

We develop a potential algorithm to relate the depth development of ultra high energy extensive air showers and the time delay for individual muons. The time distributions sampled at different positions at ground level by a large air shower array are converted into distributions of production distances using an approximate relation between production distance, transverse distance and time delay. The method is naturally restricted to inclined showers where muons dominate the signal at ground level but could be extended to vertical showers provided that the detectors used can separate the muon signal from electrons and photons. We explore the accuracy and practical uncertainties involved in the proposed method. For practical purposes only the muons that fall outside the central region of the shower can be used, and we establish cuts in transverse distance. The method is tested using simulated showers by comparing the production distance distributions obtained using the method with the actual distances in the simulated showers. It could be applied in the search of neutrinos to increase the acceptance to highly penetrating particles, as well as for unraveling the relative compositions of protons and heavy nuclei. We also illustrate that the obtained depth distributions have minimum width when both the arrival direction and the core position are well reconstructed.

Time Structure of Muonic Showers

An analytical description of the time structure of the pulses induced by muons in air showers at ground level is deduced assuming the production distance distribution for the muons can be obtained elsewhere. The results of this description are compared against those obtained from simulated showers using AIRES. Major contributions to muon time delays are identified and a relation between the time structure and the depth distribution is unveiled.

Sensitivity of the Auger Observatory to ultra high energy photon composition through inclined showers

We report a calculation of the expected rate of inclined air showers induced by ultra high energy cosmic rays to be obtained by the Auger Southern Observatory assuming different mass compositions. We describe some features that can be used to distinguish photons at energies as high as 10$^{20}$ eV. The discrimination of photons at such energies will help to test some models of the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays.

Comparative study of simulations of Cerenkov radio emission from high energy showers in dense media

We compare in detail the results of simulations of electromagnetic showers in ice in the GeV-TeV energy range, using both the GEANT package and the ZHS Monte Carlo, a code specifically designed to calculate coherent Cerenkov radio pulses from electromagnetic showers in dense media. The longitudinal and lateral profiles as well as the tracklengths, and excess tracklengths are shown to agree at the 10% level. We briefly comment on the negligible influence of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect on the total shower tracklength. Our results are relevant for experiments exploiting the radio Cerenkov technique in dense media as well as for other detectors that rely on the Cerenkov effect in water or ice.

A new approach to inferring the mass composition of cosmic rays at energies above 10^18 eV

We describe a new approach to establishing the mass composition at high energies. Based on measuring both the vertical and inclined shower rates, it has the potential to distinguish heavy nuclei from light nuclei. We apply the method to Haverah Park data above 10^18 eV to show that, under the assumption that the Quark Gluon String Jet Model correctly describes the high energy interactions, the inclined shower measurements favour a light composition at energies above 10^19 eV. The same conclusion is obtained using a variety of assumptions about the cosmic ray spectrum. To the extent that precise spectral measurements will be possible by forthcoming experiments such as the Auger observatories, the method will further constrain data on composition of the ultra high energy cosmic rays.

Constraints on the Ultra High Energy Photon flux using inclined showers from the Haverah Park array

We describe a method to analyse inclined air showers produced by ultra high energy cosmic rays using an analytical description of the muon densities. We report the results obtained using data from inclined events (60^{\circ}<θ<80^{\circ}) recorded by the Haverah Park shower detector for energies above 10^19 eV. Using mass independent knowledge of the UHECR spectrum obtained from vertical air shower measurements and comparing the expected horizontal shower rate to the reported measurements we show that above 10^19 eV less than 48 % of the primary cosmic rays can be photons at the 95 % confidence level and above 4 X 10^19 eV less than 50 % of the cosmic rays can be photonic at the same confidence level. These limits place important constraints on some models of the origin of ultra high-energy cosmic rays.

Prospects for radio detection of extremely high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos in the Moon

We explore the feasibility of using the Moon as a detector of extremely high energy (>10^19 eV) cosmic rays and neutrinos. The idea is to use the existing radiotelescopes on Earth to look for short pulses of Cherenkov radiation in the GHz range emitted by showers induced just below the surface of the Moon when cosmic rays or neutrinos strike it. We estimate the energy threshold of the technique and the effective aperture and volume of the Moon for this detection. We apply our calculation to obtain the expected event rates from the observed cosmic ray flux and several representative theoretical neutrino fluxes.

Modelling Horizontal Air Showers Induced by Cosmic Rays

We present a framework for the study of muon density patterns on the ground due to showers produced in the atmosphere by cosmic rays incident at high zenith angles. As a checking procedure predictions of a model based on such a framework are compared to simulation results.

Nuclear Effects on the UHE Neutrino-Nucleon Deep Inelastic Scattering Cross Section

Using a recent parametrization of nuclear effects in parton distribution functions we calculate the neutrino-nucleon cross section at energies relevant for ultra high energy neutrino telescopes. The modification of the cross section in comparison with the calculation using parton densities in free nucleons is of the order of few per cent for the parameter range of interest in neutrino telescopes (A=10 and E=10$^6$ GeV) and it reaches 20 % at the highest energies (E=10$^{12}$ GeV) and for the largest nuclear size (A=190) considered.

New constraints from Haverah Park data on the photon and iron fluxes of UHE cosmic rays

Using data from inclined events ($60^{\circ}<θ<80^{\circ}$) recorded by the Haverah Park shower detector, we show that above 10^19 eV less than 30% of the primary cosmic rays can be photons or iron nuclei at the 95% confidence level. Above 4 10^19 eV less than 55% of the cosmic rays can be photonic at the same confidence level. These limits place important constraints on some models of the origin of ultra high energy cosmic rays. Details of two new events above 10^20 eV are reported.

Prospects for observations of high-energy cosmic tau neutrinos

We study prospects for the observations of high-energy cosmic tau neutrinos (E \geq 10^6 GeV) originating from proton acceleration in the cores of active galactic nuclei. We consider the possibility that vacuum flavor neutrino oscillations induce a tau to muon neutrino flux ratio greatly exceeding the rather small value expected from intrinsic production. The criterias and event rates for under water/ice light Cerenkov neutrino telescopes are given by considering the possible detection of downgoing high-energy cosmic tau neutrinos through characteristic double shower events.

High Energy Cosmic Rays from Neutrinos

We discuss recent models in which neutrinos, which are assumed to have mass in the eV range, originate the highest energy cosmic rays by interaction with the enhanced density in the galactic halo of the relic cosmic neutrino background. We make an analytical calculation of the required neutrino fluxes to show that the parameter space for these models is constrained by horizontal air shower searches and by the total number of background neutrinos, so that only models which have fairly unnatural halo sizes and enhanced densities are allowed.

Calculation Methods for Radio Pulses from High Energy Showers

We present an approximation for the numerical calculation of Cherenkov radio pulses in the Fraunhofer limit from very high energy showers in dense media. We compare it to full Montecarlo simulations in ice studying its range of applicability and show how it can be extended with a simple algorithm. The approximation reproduces well the angular distribution of the pulse around the Cherenkov direction. An improved parameterization for the frequency spectrum in the Cherenkov direction is given for phenomenolgical applications. We extend the method to study the pulses produced by showers at distances at which the Fraunhofer limit does not apply, and give the ranges of distances and frequencies in which Fraunhofer approximation is good enough for interpreting future experimental data. Our results are relevant for the detection of very high energy neutrinos with this technique.

The rate of cosmic ray showers at large zenith angles: a step towards the detection of ultra-high energy neutrinos by the Pierre Auger Observatory

It is anticipated that the Pierre Auger Observatory can be used to detect cosmic neutrinos of >10^19 eV that arrive at very large zenith angles. However showers created by neutrino interactions close to the detector must be picked out against a background of similar events initiated by cosmic ray nuclei. As a step towards understanding this background, we have made the first detailed analysis of air showers recorded at Haverah Park (an array which used similar detectors to those planned for the Auger Observatory) with zenith angles above 60 degs. We find that the differential shower rate from 60 degs to 80 degs. can be predicted accurately when we adopt the known primary energy spectrum above 10^17 eV and assume the QGSJET model and proton primaries. Details of the calculation are given.

We study the longitudinal development of hadronic showers in water and ice for energies up to 100 EeV. We present results of a hybrid Monte Carlo method developed for the purpose of simulating those showers. We show parameterizations of the longitudinal development of hadronic showers in ice and we investigate the implications of the LPM effect on shower development. The results obtained are relevant for the detection of high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos in large scale detectors that use water as Cherenkov medium.

Radiodetection of neutrino interactions in ice

We study the Cherenkov radiopulses emitted in PeV and EeV neutrino interactions in ice. We discuss how the rich radiation pattern in the 100 MHz to 1 GHz frequency range, in principle allows the measurement of shower elongation produced in neutrino interactions opening up the possibility of flavor recognition identifying charged current electron neutrino interactions.
