Tunneling Splittings in Mn12-Acetate Single Crystals

A Landau-Zener multi-crossing method has been used to investigate the tunnel splittings in high quality Mn$_{12}$-acetate single crystals in the pure quantum relaxation regime and for fields applied parallel to the magnetic easy axis. With this method several individual tunneling resonances have been studied over a broad range of time scales. The relaxation is found to be non-exponential and a distribution of tunnel splittings is inferred from the data. The distributions suggest that the inhomogeneity in the tunneling rates is due to disorder that produces a non-zero mean value of the average transverse anisotropy, such as in a solvent disorder model. Further, the effect of intermolecular dipolar interaction on the magnetic relaxation has been studied.

Comment on "Magnetic Relaxations of Antiferromagnetic Nanoparticles in Magnetic Fields"

We have carried out in ferritin the Field-Cooling method and data analysis proposed by Mamiya et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 67202 (2002) at T = 5 K in order to check the time magnetic relaxation of these antiferromagnetic nanoparticles as a function of the magnetic field. We found that relaxation at T = 5 K in ferritin is faster in the absence of magnetic field, in good agreement with the zero-field Resonant Spin Quantum Tunneling observed previously in ferritin (Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 1754 (1997).

Quadratic transverse anisotropy term due to dislocations in Mn12-Ac directly obtained by EPR spectroscopy

High-Sensitivity Electron Paramagnetic Resonance experiments have been carried out in fresh and stressed Mn12-Acetate single crystals for frequencies ranging from 40 GHz up to 110 GHz. The high number of crystal dislocations formed in the stressing process introduces a E(S_x^2-S_y^2) transverse anisotropy term in the spin hamiltonian. From the behaviour of the resonant absorptions on the applied transverse magnetic field we have obtained an average value for E = 22 mK, corresponding to a concentration of dislocations per unit cell of c = 10^-3.

Relaxation and Landau-Zener experiments down to 100 mK in ferritin

Temperature-independent magnetic viscosity in ferritin has been observed from 2 K down to 100 mK, proving that quantum tunneling plays the main role in these particles at low temperature. Magnetic relaxation has also been studied using the Landau-Zener method making the system crossing zero resonant field at different rates, alpha=dH/dt, ranging from 10^{-5} to 10^{-3} T/s, and at different temperatures, from 150 mK up to the blocking temperature. We propose a new Tln(Delta H_{eff}/tau_0 alpha) scaling law for the Landau-Zener probability in a system distributed in volumes, where Delta H_{eff} is the effective width of the zero field resonance.

Millikelvin magnetic relaxation measurements of alpha-Fe2O3 antiferromagnetic particles

In this paper we report magnetic relaxation data for antiferromagnetic alpha-Fe2O3 particles of 5 nm mean diameter in the temperature range 0.1 K to 25 K. The average spin value of these particles S=124 and the uniaxial anisotropy constant D=1.6x10^-2 K have been estimated from the experimental values of the blocking temperature and anisotropy field. The observed plateau in the magnetic viscosity from 3 K down to 100 mK agrees with the occurrence of spin tunneling from the ground state Sz = S. However, the scaling M vs Tln(nu t) is broken below 5 K, suggesting the occurrence of tunneling from excited states below this temperature.

Magnetic qubits as hardware for quantum computers

We propose two potential realisations for quantum bits based on nanometre scale magnetic particles of large spin S and high anisotropy molecular clusters. In case (1) the bit-value basis states |0> and |1> are the ground and first excited spin states Sz = S and S-1, separated by an energy gap given by the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) frequency. In case (2), when there is significant tunnelling through the anisotropy barrier, the qubit states correspond to the symmetric, |0>, and antisymmetric, |1>, combinations of the two-fold degenerate ground state Sz = +- S. In each case the temperature of operation must be low compared to the energy gap, Δ, between the states |0> and |1>. The gap Δin case (2) can be controlled with an external magnetic field perpendicular to the easy axis of the molecular cluster. The states of different molecular clusters and magnetic particles may be entangled by connecting them by superconducting lines with Josephson switches, leading to the potential for quantum computing hardware.

High frequency resonant experiments in Fe$_8$ molecular clusters

Precise resonant experiments on Fe$_{8}$ magnetic clusters have been conducted down to 1.2 K at various tranverse magnetic fields, using a cylindrical resonator cavity with 40 different frequencies between 37 GHz and 110 GHz. All the observed resonances for both single crystal and oriented powder, have been fitted by the eigenstates of the hamiltonian ${\cal H}=-DS_z^2+ES_x^2-gμ_B{\bf H}\cdot {\bf S}$. We have identified the resonances corresponding to the coherent quantum oscillations for different orientations of spin S = 10.

Quantum Coherence in Fe8 Molecular Nanomagnets

We report observation of coherent quantum oscilations in spin-10 Fe8 molecular clusters. The powder of magnetically oriented Fe8 crystallites was placed inside a resonator, in a dc magnetic field perpendicular to the magnetization axis. The field dependence of the ac-susceptibility was measured up to 5 T, at 680 MHz, down to 25 mK. Two peaks in the imaginary part of the susceptibility have been detected, whose positions coincide, without any fitting parameters, with the predicted two peaks corresponding to the quantum splitting of the ground state in the magnetic field parallel and perpendicular to the hard magnetization axis.
