An algorithm for the Product-Sum Equality

We propose a recursive algorithm for identifying all finite sequences of positive integers whose product equals their sum. Our method uses solutions of strictly shorter length that are iteratively extended in pursuit of a valid solution. The algorithm is efficient, with a time complexity similar to the quick sort algorithm.

The Smirnov Property for weighted Lebesgue spaces

We establish lower norm bounds for multivariate functions within weighted Lebesgue spaces, characterized by a summation of functions whose components solve a system of nonlinear integral equations. This problem originates in portfolio selection theory, where these equations allow to identify mean-variance optimal portfolios, composed of standard European Options on several underlying assets. We elaborate on the Smirnov property-an integrability condition for the weights that guarantees the uniqueness of solutions to the system. Sufficient conditions on weights to satisfy this property are provided, and counterexamples are constructed, where either the Smirnov property does not hold, or the uniqueness of solutions fails.

Asymptotic methods for transaction costs

We propose a general approximation method for determining optimal trading strategies in markets with proportional transaction costs, with a polynomial approximation of the residual value function. The method is exemplified by several problems from optimally tracking benchmarks, hedging the Log contract, to maximizing utility from terminal wealth. Strategies are also approximated by practically executable, discrete trades. We identify the necessary trade-off between trading frequency and trade sizes to have satisfactory agreement with the theoretically optimal, continuous strategies of infinite activity.

Almost Perfect Shadow Prices

Shadow prices simplify the derivation of optimal trading strategies in markets with transaction costs by transferring optimization into a more tractable, frictionless market. This paper establishes that a naïve shadow price Ansatz for maximizing long term returns given average volatility yields a strategy that is, for small bid-ask-spreads, asymptotically optimal at third order. Considering the second-order impact of transaction costs, such a strategy is essentially optimal. However, for risk aversion different from one, we devise alternative strategies that outperform the shadow market at fourth order. Finally, it is shown that the risk-neutral objective rules out the existence of shadow prices.

Criticality and Popularity in Social Networks

I find that several models for information sharing in social networks can be interpreted as age-dependent multi-type branching processes, and build them independently following Sewastjanow. This allows to characterize criticality in (real and random) social networks. For random networks, I develop a moment-closure method that handles the high-dimensionality of these models: By modifying the timing of sharing with followers, all users can be represented by a single representative, while leaving the total progeny unchanged. Thus I compute the exact popularity distribution, revealing a viral character of critical models expressed by fat tails of order minus three half.

Minimal L^p-Densities with Prescribed Marginals

We derive sharp lower bounds for L^p-functions on the n-dimensional unit hypercube in terms of their p-th marginal moments. Such bounds are the unique solutions of a system of constrained nonlinear integral equations depending on the marginals. For square-integrable functions, the bounds have an explicit expression in terms of the second marginals moments.

Three essays on stopping

First, we give a closed-form formula for first passage time of a reflected Brownian motion with drift. This modifies a formula by Perry et al (2004). Second, we show that the maximum before a fixed drawdown is exponentially distributed for any drawdown threshold, if and only if the diffusion characteristic mu/sigma^2 is constant. This complements the sufficient condition formulated by Lehoczky (1977). Third, we give an alternative proof for the fact that the maximum at a fixed drawdown threshold is exponentially distributed for any spectrally negative Lévy process, a result due to Mijatovic and Pistorius (2012).

Geometric Ergodicity of Affine Processes on Cones

For affine processes on finite-dimensional cones, we give criteria for geometric ergodicity - that is exponentially fast convergence to a unique stationary distribution. Ergodic results include both the existence of exponential moments of the limiting distribution, where we exploit the crucial affine property, and finite moments, where we invoke the polynomial property of affine semigroups. Furthermore, we elaborate sufficient conditions for aperiodicity and irreducibility. Our results are applicable to Wishart processes with jumps on the positive semidefinite matrices, continuous-time branching processes with immigration in high dimensions, and classical term-structure models for credit and interest rate risk.

Reforming the Wishart characteristic function

The literature presents the characteristic function of the Wishart distribution on m times m matrices as an inverse power of the determinant of the Fourier variable, the exponent being the positive, real shape parameter. I demonstrate that only for two times two matrices, this expression is unambiguous -- in this case the complex range of the determinant excludes the negative real line. When m greater or equals 3 the range of the determinant contains closed lines around the origin, hence a single branch of the complex logarithm does not suffice to define the determinant's power. To resolve this issue, I give the correct analytic extension of the Laplace transform, by exploiting the Fourier-Laplace transform of a Wishart process.

On Wishart and non-central Wishart distributions on symmetric cones

Necessary conditions for the existence of non-central Wishart distributions are given. Our method relies on positivity properties of spherical polynomials on Euclidean Jordan Algebras and advances an approach by Peddada and Richards (1991), where only a special case (positive semidefinite matrices, rank one non-centrality parameter) is treated. Not only needs the shape parameters be in the Wallach set - as is the case for Riesz measures - but also the rank of the non-centrality parameter is constrained by the size of the shape parameter. This rank condition has been recently proved with different methods for the special case of symmetric, positive semidefinite matrices (Letac and Massam (2011) and Graczyk, Malecki and Mayerhofer (2016)).

The Limits of Leverage

When trading incurs proportional costs, leverage can scale an asset's return only up to a maximum multiple, which is sensitive to its volatility and liquidity. In a model with one safe and one risky asset, with constant investment opportunities and proportional costs, we find strategies that maximize long term returns given average volatility. As leverage increases, rising rebalancing costs imply declining Sharpe ratios. Beyond a critical level, even returns decline. Holding the Sharpe ratio constant, higher asset volatility leads to superior returns through lower costs.

A Characterization of Wishart Processes and Wishart Distributions

A characterization of the existence of non-central Wishart distributions (with shape and non-centrality parameter) as well as the existence of solutions to Wishart stochastic differential equations (with initial data and drift parameter) in terms of their exact parameter domains is given. These two families are the natural extensions of the non-central chi-square distributions and the squared Bessel processes to the positive semidefinite matrices.

A note on the Esscher transform of affine Markov processes

In affine models, both the martingale property of stochastic exponentials and non-explosion of affine processes is characterized in terms of minimality of solutions to a system of generalized Riccati differential equations. This is the final improvement of previous results by Duffie, Filipovic and Schachermayer (2003), Mayerhofer, Muhle-Karbe and Smirnov (2011) and Keller-Ressel and Mayerhofer (2015) for processes on canonical state spaces.

Exponential moments of affine processes

We investigate the maximal domain of the moment generating function of affine processes in the sense of Duffie, Filipović and Schachermayer [Ann. Appl. Probab. 13 (2003) 984-1053], and we show the validity of the affine transform formula that connects exponential moments with the solution of a generalized Riccati differential equation. Our result extends and unifies those preceding it (e.g., Glasserman and Kim [Math. Finance 20 (2010) 1-33], Filipović and Mayerhofer [Radon Ser. Comput. Appl. Math. 8 (2009) 1-40] and Kallsen and Muhle-Karbe [Stochastic Process Appl. 120 (2010) 163-181]) in that it allows processes with very general jump behavior, applies to any convex state space and provides both sufficient and necessary conditions for finiteness of exponential moments.

Affine Processes

We put forward a complete theory on moment explosion for fairly general state-spaces. This includes a characterization of the validity of the affine transform formula in terms of minimal solutions of a system of generalized Riccati differential equations. Also, we characterize the class of positive semidefinite processes, and provide existence of weak and strong solutions for Wishart SDEs. As an application, we answer a conjecture of M.L. Eaton on the maximal parameter domain of non-central Wishart distributions. The last chapter of this thesis comprises three individual works on affine models, such as a characterization of the martingale property of exponentially affine processes, an investigation of the jump-behaviour of processes on positive semidefinite cones, and an existence result for transition densities of multivariate affine jump-diffusions and their approximation theory in weighted Hilbert spaces.

On the existence of non-central Wishart distributions

This paper deals with the existence issue of non-central Wishart distributions which is a research topic initiated by Wishart (1928), and with important contributions by e.g., Lévy (1937), Gindikin (1975), Shanbhag (1988), Peddada and Richards (1991). We present a new method involving the theory of affine Markov processes, which reveals joint necessary conditions on shape and non-centrality parameter. While Eaton's conjecture concerning the necessary range of the shape parameter is confirmed, we also observe that it is not sufficient anymore that it only belongs to the Gindikin ensemble, as is in the central case.

Affine processes on positive semidefinite d x d matrices have jumps of finite variation in dimension d > 1

The theory of affine processes on the space of positive semidefinite d x d matrices has been established in a joint work with Cuchiero, Filipović and Teichmann (2011). We confirm the conjecture stated therein that in dimension d greater than 1 this process class does not exhibit jumps of infinite total variation. This constitutes a geometric phenomenon which is in contrast to the situation on the positive real line (Kawazu and Watanabe, 1974). As an application we prove that the exponentially affine property of the Laplace transform carries over to the Fourier-Laplace transform if the diffusion coefficient is zero or invertible.
