Interaction-Assisted Spin Coherence in a Multimode Trapped Atomic Ensemble

In a thermally occupied multimode trapped ensemble, mode-dependent detunings can strongly suppress Ramsey contrast even when the underlying dynamics remains coherent. We develop a weak-axis-resolved Hamiltonian theory in which collective mode spins experience longitudinal detunings and overlap-dependent exchange interactions. Without exchange, the distribution of detunings across thermally occupied modes produces coherent phase mixing and an algebraically decaying Ramsey-contrast envelope in the many-mode continuum regime. At the mean-field level, exchange generates a self-consistent restoring field that reduces phase dispersion and restores collective contrast. The crossover is governed by the competition between the collective exchange scale and the thermally induced detuning spread: when the late-time contrast is expressed in terms of their ratio, results at different temperatures collapse onto a common trend, and the crossover coupling follows the predicted inverse-square thermal scaling, with a numerical exponent of 2.06. Weak irreversible pure dephasing limits, but does not eliminate, this recovery, demonstrating that exchange refocuses coherent inhomogeneous phase mixing but cannot reverse irreversible phase noise.

Phase assumption-free multiparty quantum clock synchronization

We investigate methods to broadcast timing information from a central clock to all other clocks by the use of multipartite entanglement. This task is a necessary step in establishing a coordinated universal time, currently performed using classical synchronization methods. Using an entanglement-based method has the advantage that the timing results are independent of the intervening medium. We generalize existing bipartite quantum clock synchronization methods and take special care to address issues of different phase conventions being adopted at each node (the ``Preskill phase problem''). Using supersinglet purification, we show that this allows for a scalable method with a time signal that is a constant with respect to the number of nodes.

Photon loss effects on light-mediated non-Gaussian entangled Bose-Einstein condensates projecting with different photon measurement outcomes

The theory of quantum information processing for macroscopic qubits is based on the fact that every macroscopic qubit has a conserved number of particles. However, from an experimental point of view, every such qubit experiences processes of decoherence that impact the possibilities for entanglement generation between such qubits and use in quantum information processing efficiently. One of the most prospective methods for generating entanglement between distant atomic BECs is quantum nondemolition measurements. Here, we study how the effects of photon measurement impact the entanglement when photon loss decoherence is included. We employ the thermally entangled state representation (TESR) and integral within the ordered operator(IWOP) approach to obtain the accurate density matrix in a photon loss channel. We demonstrate that varying outcomes of photon number measurements lead to the generation of distinct entangled states, each exhibiting unique characteristics. We find that using the Hofmann-Takeuchi and Duan-Giedke-Cirac-Zoller criterion provides advantages in entanglement detection compared to the Wineland squeezing and EPR steering criterion in such settings.

Neutral atom entangling gate in the ultrastrong coupling regime

We propose a method to deterministically entangle qubits or ensembles of qubits interacting with a shared bosonic mode in the ultrastrong coupling regime. We show that the resulting gate is a product of two unitaries: one unitary acts only on the quantum state of the qubits and entangles them, while the other acts only on the quantum state of the boson, producing a phase shift. We find that the gate time is inversely proportional to the qubit-boson interaction strength, and by tuning the qubit-boson interaction strength, one can prepare a maximally entangled state or a squeezed state. Applying the quantum gate to multiple qubit ensembles, we show that the quantum gate prepares a Schrödinger cat state. We also examine imperfections such as including free evolution of the qubits, and show that this produces an effective mixing. Our proposal is feasible for ultrastrong coupling experiments.

Quantum nondemolition measurement operator with spontaneous emission

We present a theory for quantum nondemolition (QND) measurements of an atomic ensemble in the presence of spontaneous emission. We derive the master equation that governs the evolution of the ground state of the atoms and the quantum state of light. Solving the master equation exactly without invoking the Holstein-Primakoff approximation and projecting out the quantum state of light, we derive a positive operator-valued measure that describes the QND measurement. We show that at high spontaneous emission conditions, the QND measurement has a unique dominant state to which the measurement collapses. We additionally investigate the behavior of the QND measurement in the limiting case of strong atom-light interactions, where we show that the positive operator valued measure becomes a projection operator. We further analyze the effect of spontaneous emission noise on atomic state preparation. We find that it limits the width of the eigenvalue spectrum available to a quantum state in a linear superposition. This effect leads to state collapse on the dominant state. We generate various non-classical states of the atom by tuning the atom-light interaction strength. We find that non-classical states such as the Schrödinger-cat state, whose coherence spans the entire eigenvalue spectrum of the total spin operator $J_z$ for a given spin eigenvalue $J$, lose their coherence because spontaneous emission limits the accessibility of states farther away from the dominant state.

Macroscopic maximally entangled state preparation between two atomic ensembles

We develop a scheme to prepare a macroscopic maximally entangled state (MMES) between two atomic ensembles using adaptive quantum nondemolition (QND) measurements. The quantum state of the system is evolved using a sequence of QND measurements followed by adaptive unitaries, such that the desired measurement outcome is obtained with asymptotically unit probability. This procedure is repeated in z and x spin basis alternately such that the state converges deterministically towards the maximally entangled state. Up to a local spin-basis rotation, the maximally entangled state has zero total spin angular momentum, i.e. it is a singlet state. Our protocol does not perform postselection and works beyond the Holstein-Primakoff regime for the atomic spin degrees of freedom, producing genuine macroscopic entanglement.

Measurement-based deterministic imaginary time evolution

We introduce a method to perform imaginary time evolution in a controllable quantum system using measurements and conditional unitary operations. By performing a sequence of weak measurements based on the desired Hamiltonian constructed by a Suzuki-Trotter decomposition, an evolution approximating imaginary time evolution can be realized. The randomness due to measurement is corrected using conditional unitary operations, making the evolution deterministic. Both the measurements required for the algorithm and the conditional unitary operations can be constructed efficiently. We show that the algorithm converges only below a specified energy threshold and the complexity is estimated for some specific problem instances.

Hybrid approximation approach to generation of atomic squeezing with quantum nondemolition measurements

We analyze a scheme that uses quantum nondemolition measurements to induce squeezing of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well trap. In a previous paper [Ilo-Okeke et al. Phys. Rev. A \textbf{104}, 053324 (2021)], we introduced a model to solve exactly the wavefunction for all atom-light interaction times. Here, we perform approximations for the short interaction time regime, which is relevant for producing squeezing. Our approach uses a Holstein-Primakoff approximation for the atoms while we treat the light variables exactly. It allows us to show that the measurement induces correlations within the condensate, which manifest in the state of the condensate as a superposition of even parity states. In the long interaction time regime, our methods allow us to identify the mechanism for loss of correlation. We derive simple expressions for the variances of atomic spin variables conditioned on the measurement outcome. We find that the results agree with the exact solution in the short interaction time regime. Additionally, we show that the expressions are the sum of the variances of the atoms and the measurement. Beyond the short interaction time regime, our scheme agrees qualitatively with the exact solution for the spin variable that couples to light.

Imaginary time evolution with quantum nondemolition measurements: multi-qubit interactions via measurement nonlinearities

We show that quantum nondemolition (QND) measurements can be used to realize measurement-based imaginary time evolution. In our proposed scheme, repeated weak QND measurements are used to estimate the energy of a given Hamiltonian. Based on this estimated energy, adaptive unitary operations are applied such that only the targeted energy eigenstates are fixed points of the evolution. In this way, the system is deterministically driven towards the desired state. The nonlinear nature of the QND measurement, which allows for producing interactions between systems, is explicitly derived in terms of measurement operators. We show that for suitable interaction times, single qubit QND Hamiltonians can be converted to effective multi-qubit imaginary time operations. We illustrate our techniques with the example of preparing a four qubit cluster state, which is prepared using only collective single qubit QND measurements and single qubit adaptive operations.

Optical and atomic decoherence in entangled atomic ensembles generated by quantum nondemolition measurements

We study the effects of decoherence in the form of optical phase diffusion, photon loss and gain, and atomic dephasing in entangled atomic ensembles produced via quantum nondemolition (QND) measurements. For the optical decoherence channels, we use the technique of integration within ordered operators (IWOP) to obtain the Kraus operators that describe the decoherence. We analyze the effect of different decoherence channels on a variety of quantities such as the variances of the spin operators, entanglement and correlation criteria, logarithmic negativity, and the Bell-CHSH inequality. We generally find a smooth decay of correlations and entanglement in the presence of decoherence. We find that various quantities retain showing non-classical properties under all three types of decoherence, in the short interaction time range. Our results show that such QND measurements are one of the most promising methods for entanglement generation between two Bose-Einstein condensates.

Measurement operator for quantum nondemolition measurements

We derive a measurement operator corresponding to a quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of an atomic ensemble. The quantum measurement operator takes the form of a positive operator valued measure (POVM) and is valid for arbitrary interaction times, initial coherent state amplitudes, and final photon measurement outcomes. We analyze the dependence on various parameters and show that the effect of the QND measurement for short interaction times is to apply a Gaussian modulation of the initial state wavefunction. We derive approximate expressions for the POVM in various limits, such as the short interaction time regime and projective measurement limit. Several examples are shown which shows how spin squeezing and Schrodinger cat states can be generated using the measurement.

Decoherence effects in quantum nondemolition measurement induced entanglement between Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the robustness of quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement-induced entanglement between Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs). We consider an experimental scheme where two BECs are placed in the paths of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and a QND interaction creates entanglement between coherent light and the atoms. We analyze the two dominant channels of decoherence, atomic dephasing and photon loss on the entangled states produced by this scheme. We calculate the effect of dephasing on the variance and expectation values of the spin operators, entanglement, and correlation criteria. Our analysis does not use the Holstein-Primakoff approximation and is capable of modeling long light-atom interaction times, producing non-Gaussian states beyond the two-mode squeezed states. In the presence of dephasing, the entangled states are robust in the macroscopic limit as long as the dimensionless interaction time is less than $ 1/\sqrt{N}$, where $ N $ is the number of atoms in the BEC. For photon loss, the entangled states generated by long interaction times show remarkable robustness that makes the scheme promising for various quantum information applications.

Deterministic preparation of supersinglets with collective spin projections

We introduce a procedure to generate supersinglets, the multipartite generalization of angular momentum singlet states. A supersinglet is defined as a total spin zero state consisting of $ N $ spin-$ j $ particles. They are highly entangled and have zero spin variance in any direction, and as such are potentially useful for quantum metrology. Our scheme is based on projective measurements that measure the collective spin of the whole spin ensemble. A local unitary rotation is applied conditionally on the measurement outcome, such as to maximize the probability of obtaining spin zero on the subsequent measurement. The sequence is repeated in the $ z $- and $ x $-basis until convergence is obtained towards the supersinglet state. Our sequence works regardless of the initial state, and no postselection is required. Due to the use of strong projective measurements, very fast convergence towards zero spin variance is obtained. We discuss an example implementation using quantum nondemolition measurements in atomic ensembles, and perform numerical simulations to demonstrate the procedure.

Remote state preparation of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

A protocol for remote state preparation is proposed for spin ensembles, where the aim is to prepare a state with a given set of spin expectation values on a remote spin ensemble using entanglement, local spin rotations, and measurements in the Fock basis. The spin ensembles could be realized by thermal atomic ensembles or spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. The protocol works beyond the Holstein-Primakoff approximation, such that spin expectation values for the full Bloch sphere can be prepared. The main practical obstacle is the preparation of the maximally entangled state between the spin ensembles. To overcome this, we examine using states based on the two-axis two-spin (2A2S) Hamiltonian in place of the maximally entangled state and examine its performance. We find that the version of the protocol with 2A2S squeezing well-approximates the maximally entangled state, such that spin averages can be remotely prepared. We evaluate the errors of using 2A2S squeezed states, and find that it decreases with the ensemble size. With post-selection, errors can be systematically decreased further.

Faraday imaging induced squeezing of a double-well Bose-Einstein condensate

We examine how non-destructive measurements generate spin squeezing in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a double-well trap. The condensate in each well is monitored using coherent light beams in a Mach-Zehnder configuration that interacts with the atoms through a quantum nondemolition Hamiltonian. We solve the dynamics of the light-atom system using an exact wavefunction approach, in the presence of dephasing noise, which allows us to examine arbitrary interaction times and a general initial state. We find that monitoring the condensate at zero detection current and with identical coherent light beams minimizes the backaction of the measurement on the atoms. In the weak atom-light interaction regime, we find the mean spin direction is relatively unaffected, while the variance of the spins is squeezed along the axis coupled to the light. Additionally, squeezing persists in the presence of tunneling and dephasing noise.

Relativity of quantum states in entanglement swapping: Violation of Bell's inequality with no entanglement

The entanglement swapping protocol is analyzed in a relativistic setting, where shortly after the entanglement swapping is performed, a Bell violation measurement is performed. From an observer in the laboratory frame, a Bell violation is observed due to entanglement swapping taking place, but in a moving frame the order of the measurements is reversed, and a Bell violation is observed even though no entanglement is present. Although the measurement results are identical, the wavefunctions for the two frames are different--- one is entangled and the other is not. Furthermore, for boosts in a perpendicular direction, in the presence of decoherence, we show that a maximum Bell violation can occur across non-simultaneous points in time. This is a signature of entanglement that is spread across both space and time, showing both the non-local and non-simultaneous feature of entanglement.

Remote quantum clock synchronization without synchronized clocks

A major outstanding problem for many quantum clock synchronization protocols is the hidden assumption of the availability of synchronized clocks within the protocol. In general, quantum operations between two parties do not have consistent phase definitions of quantum states, which introduce an unknown systematic phase error. We show that despite prior arguments to the contrary, it is possible to remove this unknown phase via entanglement purification. This closes the loophole for entanglement based quantum clock synchronization protocols, which are most compatible with current photon based long-distance entanglement distribution schemes. Starting with noisy Bell pairs, we show that the scheme produces a singlet state for any combination of (i) differing basis conventions for Alice and Bob; (ii) an overall time offset in the execution of the purification algorithm; and (iii) the presence of a noisy channel. Error estimates reveal that better performance than existing classical Einstein synchronization protocols should be achievable using current technology.
