Examining the Effectiveness of Transformer-Based Smart Contract Vulnerability Scan

Smart contract technology facilitates self-executing agreements on the blockchain, eliminating dependency on an external trusted authority. However, smart contracts may expose vulnerabilities that can lead to financial losses and disruptions in decentralized applications. In this work, we evaluate deep learning-based approaches for vulnerability scanning of Ethereum smart contracts. We propose VASCOT, a Vulnerability Analyzer for Smart COntracts using Transformers, which performs sequential analysis of Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) bytecode and incorporates a sliding window mechanism to overcome input length constraints. To assess VASCOT's detection efficacy, we construct a dataset of 16,469 verified Ethereum contracts deployed in 2022, and annotate it using trace analysis with concrete validation to mitigate false positives. VASCOT's performance is then compared against a state-of-the-art LSTM-based vulnerability detection model on both our dataset and an older public dataset. Our findings highlight the strengths and limitations of each model, providing insights into their detection capabilities and generalizability.

A Review of the In-Network Computing and Its Role in the Edge-Cloud Continuum

Future networks are anticipated to enable exciting applications and industrial services ranging from Multisensory Extended Reality to Holographic and Haptic communication. These services are accompanied by high bandwidth requirements and/or require low latency and low reliability, which leads to the need for scarce and expensive resources. Cloud and edge computing offer different functionalities to these applications that require communication, computing, and caching (3C) resources working collectively. Hence, a paradigm shift is necessary to enable the joint management of the 3Cs in the edge-cloud continuum. We argue that In-Network Computing (INC) is the missing element that completes the edge-cloud continuum. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the driving use-cases, explores the synergy between INC and 3C, and emphasizes the crucial role of INC. A discussion on the opportunities and challenges posed by INC is held from various perspectives, including hardware implementation, architectural design, and regulatory and commercial aspects.

Effective Communications for 6G: Challenges and Opportunities

This article studies effective communication, one of the three forms identified by Weaver and Shannon, as an enabler for the upcoming 6G use cases. The envisioned tactile, holographic, and multi-sensory communications require bandwidths in the order of terabits per second and latencies in the order of microseconds for an immersive experience. We argue that a theoretical framework for transporting information tailored to end-users' goals is necessary to support such applications. Different from the recently emerging discussions focusing on the meaning of exchanged messages, we focus on using these messages to take actions in the desired way. We highlight the essential characteristics of distributed knowledge accumulation as a facilitator for this upcoming paradigm, and discuss the challenges of making effective communications a reality and the potential opportunities for future research to address these challenges. In a real-life use case, we showcase the potential reduction in the number of bits transferred owing to the transferred accumulated knowledge.
