Bicanonical and adjoint linear systems on surfaces of general type

This note contains a new proof of a theorem of Gang Xiao saying that the bicanonical map of a surface S of general type is generically finite if and only if the second plurigenus of S is strictly larger than 2. Such properties are also studied for adjoint linear systems |K_S+L|, where L is any divisor with at least 2 linearly independent sections.

Surface singularities dominated by smooth varieties

We give a version in characteristic $p>0$ of Mumford's theorem characterizing a smooth complex germ of surface $(X,x)$ by the triviality of the topological fundamental group of $U=X\setminus \{x\}$. This note relies on discussions the authors had during the Christmas break 2009/10 in Ivry. They have been written down by Hélène in the night when Eckart died, as a despaired sign of love.

On a rationality question in the Grothendieck ring of varieties

This is a small note meant to be published in a Conference Proceedings. We discuss elementary rationality questions in the Grothendieck ring of varieties for the quotient of a finite dimensional vector space over a characteristic 0 field by a finite group. Part of it reproduces the content of a letter dated September 27, 2008 addressed to Johannes Nicaise

Stability of Hodge bundles and a numerical characterization of Shimura varieties

Consider a family f:A --> U of g-dimensional abelian varieties over a quasiprojective manifold U. Suppose that the induced map from U to the moduli scheme of polarized abelian varieties is generically finite and that there is a projective manifold Y, containing U as the complement of a normal crossing divisor S, such that the sheaf of logarithmic one forms is nef and that its determinant is ample with respect to U. We characterize whether $U$ is a Shimura variety by numerical data attached to the variation of Hodge structures, rather than by properties of the map from U to the moduli scheme or by the existence of CM points. More precisely, we show that U is a Shimura variety, if and only if two conditions hold. First, each irreducible local subsystem V of the complex weight one variation of Hodge structures is either unitary or satisfies the Arakelov equality. Secondly, for each factor M in the universal cover of U whose tangent bundle behaves like the one of a complex ball, an iterated Kodaira-Spencer map associated with V has minimal possible length in the direction of M.

Kobayashi geodesics in A_g

We consider Kobayashi geodesics in the moduli space of abelian varieties A_g that is, algebraic curves that are totally geodesic submanifolds for the Kobayashi metric. We show that Kobayashi geodesics can be characterized as those curves whose logarithmic tangent bundle splits as a subbundle of the logarithmic tangent bundle of A_g. Both Shimura curves and Teichmueller curves are examples of Kobayashi geodesics, but there are other examples. We show moreover that non-compact Kobayashi geodesics always map to the locus of real multiplication and that the Q-irreducibility of the induced variation of Hodge structures implies that they are defined over a number field.

Characteristic foliation on a hypersurface of general type in a projective symplectic manifold

Given a projective symplectic manifold $M$ and a non-singular hypersurface $X \subset M$, the symplectic form of $M$ induces a foliation of rank 1 on $X$, called the characteristic foliation. We study the question when the characteristic foliation is algebraic, namely, all the leaves are algebraic curves. Our main result is that the characteristic foliation of $X$ is not algebraic if $X$ is of general type. For the proof, we first establish an étale version of Reeb stability theorem in foliation theory and then combine it with the positivity of the direct image sheaves associated to families of curves.

Compactifications of smooth families and of moduli spaces of polarized manifolds

Let M be the moduli scheme of canonically polarized manifolds with Hilbert polynomial h. We construct for a given finite set I of natural numbers m>1 with h(m)>0 a projective compactification M' of the reduced scheme underlying M such that the ample invertible sheaf L corresponding to the determinant of the direct image of the m-th power of the relative dualizing sheaf on the moduli stack, has a natural extension L' to M'. A similar result is shown for moduli of polarized minimal models of Kodaira dimension zero. In both cases "natural" means that the pullback of L' to a curve C --> M', induced by a family f:X --> C is isomorphic to the determinant of the direct image of the m-th power of the relative dualizing sheaf whenever f is birational to a semi-stable family. Besides of the weak semistable reduction of Abramovich-Karu and the extension theorem of Gabber there are new tools, hopefully of interest by itself. In particular we will need a theorem on the flattening of multiplier sheaves in families, on their compatibility with pullbacks and on base change for their direct images, twisted by certain semiample sheaves. Following suggestions of a referee, we reorganized the article, we added several comments explaining the main line of the proof, and we changed notations a little bit.

Effective Iitaka fibrations

We show that the M-canonical map of an n-dimensional complex projective manifold X of Kodaira dimension two is birational to an Iitaka fibration for a computable positive integer M. M depends on the index b of a general fibre F of the Iitaka fibration and on the Betti number of the canonical covering of F, In particular, M is a universal constant if the dimension n is smaller than or equal to 4.

Special subvarieties of A_g

We discuss and extend some of the results obtained in "Arakelov inequalities and the uniformization of certain rigid Shimura varieties" (math.AG/0503339), restricting ourselves to the two dimensional case, i.e. to surfaces Y mapping generically finite to the moduli stack of Abelian varieties. In particular we show that Y is a Hilber modular surfaces if and only if the dergee of the Hodge bundle satisfies the Arakelov equality. In the revised version, we corrected some minor mistakes, pointed out by the referee, and we tried to improve the presentation of the text.

Arakelov inequalities and the uniformization of certain rigid Shimura varieties

Let Y be a non-singular projective manifold with an ample canonical sheaf, and let V be a rational variation of Hodge structures of weight one on Y with Higgs bundle E(1,0) + E(0,1), coming from a family of Abelian varieties. If Y is a curve the Arakelov inequality says that the difference of the slope of E(1,0) and the one of E(0,1) is is smaller than or equal to the degree of the canonical sheaf. We prove a similar inequality in the higher dimensional case. If the latter is an equality, as well as the Bogomolov inequality for E(1,0) or for E(0,1), one hopes that Y is a Shimura variety, and V a uniformizing variation of Hodge structures. This is verified, in case the universal covering of Y does not contain factors of rank >1. Part of the results extend to variations of Hodge structures over quasi-projective manifolds. The revised version corrects several mistakes and ambiguities, pointed out by the referee. Following suggestions of the referee the presentation of the results was improved.

Special families of curves, of Abelian varieties, and of certain minimal manifolds over curves

This survey article discusses some results on the structure of families f:V-->U of n-dimensional manifolds over quasi-projective curves U, with semistable reduction over a compactification Y of U. We improve the Arakelov inequality for the direct images of powers of the dualizing sheaf. For families of Abelian varieties we recall the characterization of Shimura curves by Arakelov equalities. For families of curves we recall the characterization of Teichmueller curves in terms of the existence of certain sub variation of Hodge structures. We sketch the proof that the moduli scheme of curves of genus g>1 can not contain compact Shimura curves, and that it only contains a non-compact Shimura curve for g=3.

Numerical bounds for semi-stable families of curves or of certain higher dimensional manifolds

Given an open subset U of a projective curve Y and a smooth family f:V-->U of curves, with semi-stable reduction over Y, we show that for a sub variation of Hodge structures of rank >2 the Arakelov inequality must be strict. For families of n-folds we prove a similar result under the assumption that the (n,0) component of the Higgs bundle defines fibrewise a birational map.

Complex multiplication, Griffiths-Yukawa couplings, and rigidity for families of hypersurfaces

Let M(d,n) be the moduli stack of hypersurfaces of degree d > n in the complex projective n-space, and let M(d,n;1) be the sub-stack, parameterizing hypersurfaces obtained as a d fold cyclic covering of the projective n-1 space, ramified over a hypersurface of degree d. Iterating this construction, one obtains M(d,n;r). We show that M(d,n;1) is rigid in M(d,n), although the Griffiths-Yukawa coupling degenerates for d<2n. On the other hand, for all d>n the sub-stack M(d,n;2) deforms. We calculate the exact length of the Griffiths-Yukawa coupling over M(d,n;r), and we construct a 4-dimensional family of quintic hypersurfaces, and a dense set of points in the base, where the fibres have complex multiplication.

A characterization of certain Shimura curves in the moduli stack of abelian varieties

Let f:X-->Y be a semi-stable family of complex abelian varieties over a curve Y of genus q, and smooth over the complement of s points. If F(1,0) denotes the non-flat (1,0) part of the corresponding variation of Hodge structures, the Arakelov inequalities say that 2deg(F(1,0)) is bounded from above by g=rank(F(1,0))(2q-2+s). We show that for s>0 families reaching this bound are isogenous to the g-fold product of a modular family of elliptic curves, and a constant abelian variety. For s=0, if the flat part of the VHS is defined over the rational numbers, the family is isogeneous to the g-fold product of a family h:Z-->Y, and a constant abelian variety. In this case, h:Z-->Y is obtained from the corestriction of a quaternion algebra A, defined over a totally real numberfield F, and ramified over all infinite places but one. In case the flat part of the VHS is not defined over the rational numbers, we determine the structure of the VHS.

Families over curves with a strictly maximal Higgs field

We study certain rigid Shimura curves in the moduli scheme of polarized minimal n-folds of Kodaira dimension zero. Those are characterized by some numerical condition on the Deligne extension of the corresponding variation of Hodge structures, or equivalently by the strict maximality of the induced Higgs field. We show that such Shimura curves can not be proper, for n odd, and we give some examples, showing that they exist in all dimensions.
