Gravitational Stability of Boson Stars

We investigate the stability of general-relativistic boson stars by classifying singularities of differential mappings and compare it with the results of perturbation theory. Depending on the particle number, the star has the following regimes of behavior: stable, metastable, pulsation, and collapse.

Blue spectral inflation

We reconsider the nonlinear second order Abel equation of Stewart and Lyth, which follows from a nonlinear second order slow-roll approximation. We find a new eigenvalue spectrum in the blue regime. Some of the discrete values of the spectral index n_s have consistent fits to the cumulative COBE data as well as to recent ground-base CMB experiments.

TOPICAL REVIEW: General relativistic boson stars

There is accumulating evidence that (fundamental) scalar fields may exist in Nature. The gravitational collapse of such a boson cloud would lead to a boson star (BS) as a new type of a compact object. Similarly as for white dwarfs and neutron stars, there exists a limiting mass, below which a BS is stable against complete gravitational collapse to a black hole. According to the form of the self-interaction of the basic constituents and the spacetime symmetry, we can distinguish mini-, axidilaton, soliton, charged, oscillating and rotating BSs. Their compactness prevents a Newtonian approximation, however, modifications of general relativity, as in the case of Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory as a low energy limit of strings, would provide them with gravitational memory. In general, a BS is a compact, completely regular configuration with structured layers due to the anisotropy of scalar matter, an exponentially decreasing 'halo', a critical mass inversely proportional to constituent mass, an effective radius, and a large particle number. Due to the Heisenberg principle, there exists a completely stable branch, and as a coherent state, it allows for rotating solutions with quantised angular momentum. In this review, we concentrate on the fascinating possibilities of detecting the various subtypes of (excited) BSs: Possible signals include gravitational redshift and (micro-)lensing, emission of gravitational waves, or, in the case of a giant BS, its dark matter contribution to the rotation curves of galactic halos.

Einsteinian gravity from a topological action

The curvature-squared model of gravity, in the affine form proposed by Weyl and Yang, is deduced from a topological action in 4D. More specifically, we start from the Pontrjagin (or Euler) invariant. Using the BRST antifield formalism with a double duality gauge fixing, we obtain a consistent quantization in spaces of double dual curvature as classical instanton type background. However, exact vacuum solutions with double duality properties exhibit a `vacuum degeneracy'. By modifying the duality via a scale breaking term, we demonstrate that only Einstein's equations with an induced cosmological constant emerge for the topology of the macroscopic background. This may have repercussions on the problem of `dark energy' as well as `dark matter' modeled by a torsion induced quintaxion.

Inflation, bifurcations of nonlinear curvature Lagrangians and dark energy

A possible equivalence of scalar dark matter, the inflaton, and modified gravity is analyzed. After a conformal mapping, the dependence of the effective Lagrangian on the curvature is not only singular but also bifurcates into several almost Einsteinian spaces, distinguished only by a different effective gravitational strength and cosmological constant. A swallow tail catastrophe in the bifurcation set indicates the possibility for the coexistence of different Einsteinian domains in our Universe. This `triple unification' may shed new light on the nature and large scale distribution not only of dark matter but also on `dark energy', regarded as an effective cosmological constant, and inflation.

Dark Matter Halos as Bose-Einstein Condensates

Galactic dark matter is modelled by a scalar field in order to effectively modify Kepler's law without changing standard Newtonian gravity. In particular, a solvable toy model with a self-interaction U(Phi) borrowed from non-topological solitons produces already qualitatively correct rotation curves and scaling relations. Although relativistic effects in the halo are very small, we indicate corrections arising from the general relativistic formulation. Thereby, we can also probe the weak gravitational lensing of our soliton type halo. For cold scalar fields, it corresponds to a gravitationally confined Boson-Einstein condensate, but of galactic dimensions.

Anomalies and gravity

Anomalies in Yang-Mills type gauge theories of gravity are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to the relation between the Dirac spin, the axial current j_5 and the non-covariant gauge spin C. Using diagrammatic techniques, we show that only generalizations of the U(1)- Pontrjagin four--form F^ F= dC arise in the chiral anomaly, even when coupled to gravity. Implications for Ashtekar's canonical approach to quantum gravity are discussed.

Eigenvalues of the Stewart-Lyth equation for inflation with a blue spectrum

By using the rather stringent nonlinear second order slow-roll approximation, we reconsider the nonlinear second order Abel equation of Stewart and Lyth. We determine a new blue eigenvalue spectrum. Some of the discrete values of the spectral index $n_s$ have consistent fits to the cumulative COBE data as well as to recent ground-base CMB experiments.

Exact Solution for the Exterior Field of a Rotating Neutron Star

A four-parameter class of exact asymptotically flat solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations involving only rational functions is presented. It is able to describe the exterior field of a slowly or rapidly rotating neutron star with poloidal magnetic field.

Boson Stars: Alternatives to primordial black holes?

The present surge for the astrophysical relevance of boson stars stems from the speculative possibility that these compact objects could provide a considerable fraction of the non-baryonic part of dark matter within the halo of galaxies. For a very light `universal' axion of effective string models, their total gravitational mass will be in the most likely range of \sim 0.5 M_\odot of MACHOs. According to this framework, gravitational microlensing is indirectly ``weighing" the axion mass, resulting in \sim 10^{-10} eV/c^2. This conclusion is not changing much, if we use a dilaton type self-interaction for the bosons. Moreover, we review their formation, rotation and stability as likely candidates of astrophysical importance.

Comment on: Topological Invariants, instantons, and the chiral anomaly on spaces with torsion

In Riemann-Cartan spacetimes with torsion only its axial covector piece $A$ couples to massive Dirac fields. Using renormalization group arguments, we show that besides the familiar Riemannian term only the Pontrjagin type four-form $dA\wedge dA$ does arise additionally in the chiral anomaly, but not the Nieh-Yan term $d^\star A$, as has been claimed in a recent paper [PRD 55, 7580 (1997)].

Chiral supergravity and anomalies

Similarily as in the Ashtekar approach, the translational Chern-Simons term is, as a generating function, instrumental for a chiral reformulation of simple (N=1) supergravity. After applying the algebraic Cartan relation between spin and torsion, the resulting canonical transformation induces not only decomposition of the gravitational fields into selfdual and antiselfdual modes, but also a splitting of the Rarita-Schwinger fields into their chiral parts in a natural way. In some detail, we also analyze the consequences for axial and chiral anomalies.

Multipole solutions in metric--affine gravity

Above Planck energies, the spacetime might become non--Riemannian, as it is known fron string theory and inflation. Then geometries arise in which nonmetricity and torsion appear as field strengths, side by side with curvature. By gauging the affine group, a metric affine gauge theory emerges as dynamical framework. Here, by using the harmonic map ansatz, a new class of multipole like solutions in the metric affine gravity theory (MAG) is obtained.

Boson Stars: Early History and Recent Prospects

Boson stars are descendants of the so-called geons of Wheeler, except that they are built from scalar particles instead of electromagnetic fields. If scalar fields exist in nature, such localized configurations kept together by their self-generated gravitational field can form within Einstein's general relativity. In the case of complex scalar fields, an absolutely stable branch of such non-topological solitons with conserved particle number exists. Our present surge stems from the speculative possibility that these compact objects could provide a considerable fraction of the non-baryonic part of dark matter. In any case, they may serve as a convenient "laboratory" for studying numerically rapidly rotating bodies in general relativity and the generation of gravitational waves.

Colliding waves in metric-affine gravity

We generalize the formulation of the colliding gravitational waves to metric-affine theories and present an example of such kind of exact solutions. The plane waves are equipped with five symmetries and the resulting geometry after the collision possesses two spacelike Killing vectors.

Supersymmetric quantum cosmology for Bianchi class A models

The canonical theory of (N=1) supergravity, with a matrix representation for the gravitino covector-spinor, is applied to the Bianchi class A spatially homogeneous cosmologies. The full Lorentz constraint and its implications for the wave function of the universe are analyzed in detail. We found that in this model no physical states other than the trivial "rest frame" type occur.

On the chiral anomaly in non-Riemannian spacetimes

The translational Chern-Simons type three-form coframe torsion on a Riemann-Cartan spacetime is related (by differentiation) to the Nieh-Yan four-form. Following Chandia and Zanelli, two spaces with non-trivial translational Chern-Simons forms are discussed. We then demonstrate, firstly within the classical Einstein-Cartan-Dirac theory and secondly in the quantum heat kernel approach to the Dirac operator, how the Nieh-Yan form surfaces in both contexts, in contrast to what has been assumed previously.

Effective Weinberg--Salam Model From Higher Dimensions

We consider an 8--dimensional gravitational theory, which possesses a principle fiber bundle structure, with Lorentz--scalar fields coupled to the metric. One of them plays the role of a Higgs field and the other one that of a dilaton field. The effective cosmological constant is interpreted as a Higgs potential. The Yukawa couplings are introduce by hand. The extra dimensions constitute a $SU(2)_{L} \times U(1)_{Y} \times SU(2)_{R}$ group manifold. Dirac fields are coupled to the potentials derived from the metric. As result, we obtain an effective four--dimensional theory which contains all couplings of a Weinberg--Salam--Glashow theory in a curved space-time. The masses of the gauge bosons and of the first two fermion families are given by the theory.
