Verlinde formulas for nonsimply connected groups

In 1999, Fuchs and Schweigert proposed formulas of Verlinde type for moduli spaces of surface group representations in compact nonsimply connected Lie groups. In this paper, we will prove a symplectic version of their conjecture for surfaces with at most one boundary component. A key tool in our computations is Kostant's notion of a maximal torus in apposition.

Spinor modules for Hamiltonian loop group spaces

Let $LG$ be the loop group of a compact, connected Lie group $G$. We show that the tangent bundle of any proper Hamiltonian $LG$-space $\mathcal{M}$ has a natural completion $\overline{T}\mathcal{M}$ to a strongly symplectic $LG$-equivariant vector bundle. This bundle admits an invariant compatible complex structure within a natural polarization class, defining an $LG$-equivariant spinor bundle $\mathsf{S}_{\overline{T}\mathcal{M}}$, which one may regard as the Spin$_c$-structure of $\mathcal{M}$. We describe two procedures for obtaining a finite-dimensional version of this spinor module. In one approach, we construct from $\mathsf{S}_{\overline{T}\mathcal{M}}$ a twisted Spin$_c$-structure for the quasi-Hamiltonian $G$-space associated to $\mathcal{M}$. In the second approach, we describe an `abelianization procedure', passing to a finite-dimensional $T\subset LG$-invariant submanifold of $\mathcal{M}$, and we show how to construct an equivariant Spin$_c$-structure on that submanifold.

Poisson Geometry from a Dirac perspective

We present proofs of classical results in Poisson geometry using techniques from Dirac geometry. This article is based on mini-courses at the Poisson summer school in Geneva, June 2016, and at the workshop "Quantum Groups and Gravity" at the University of Waterloo, April 2016.

Splitting theorems for Poisson and related structures

According to the Weinstein splitting theorem, any Poisson manifold is locally, near any given point, a product of a symplectic manifold with another Poisson manifold whose Poisson structure vanishes at the point. Similar splitting results are known e.g. for Lie algebroids, Dirac structures and generalized complex structures. In this paper, we develop a novel approach towards these results that leads to various generalizations, including their equivariant versions as well as their formulations in new contexts.

Convexity for twisted conjugation

Let $G$ be a compact, simply connected Lie group. If $\mathcal{C}_1,\mathcal{C}_2$ are two $G$-conjugacy classes, then the set of elements in $G$ that can be written as products $g=g_1g_2$ of elements $g_i\in \mathcal{C}_i$ is invariant under conjugation, and its image under the quotient map $G\to G/\operatorname{Ad}(G)$ is a convex polytope inside the Weyl alcove. In this note, we will prove an analogous statement for twisted conjugations relative to group automorphisms. The result will be obtained as a special case of a convexity theorem for group-valued moment maps which are equivariant with respect to the twisted conjugation action.

Dirac actions and Lu's Lie algebroid

Poisson actions of Poisson Lie groups have an interesting and rich geometric structure. We will generalize some of this structure to Dirac actions of Dirac Lie groups. Among other things, we extend a result of Jiang-Hua-Lu, which states that the cotangent Lie algebroid and the action algebroid for a Poisson action form a matched pair. We also give a full classification of Dirac actions for which the base manifold is a homogeneous space $H/K$, obtaining a generalization of Drinfeld's classification for the Poisson Lie group case.

Dirac Geometry of the Holonomy Fibration

In this paper, we solve the problem of giving a gauge-theoretic description of the natural Dirac structure on a Lie Group which plays a prominent role in the theory of D- branes for the Wess-Zumino-Witten model as well as the theory of quasi-Hamiltonian spaces. We describe the structure as an infinite-dimensional reduction of the space of connections over the circle. Our insight is that the formal Poisson structure on the space of connections is not an actual Poisson structure, but is itself a Dirac structure, due to the fact that it is defined by an unbounded operator. We also develop general tools for reducing Courant algebroids and morphisms between them, allowing us to give a precise correspondence between Hamiltonian loop group spaces and quasi- Hamiltonian spaces.

On the Van Est homomorphism for Lie groupoids

The Van Est homomorphism for a Lie groupoid $G \rightrightarrows M$, as introduced by Weinstein-Xu, is a cochain map from the complex $C^\infty(BG)$ of groupoid cochains to the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex $C(A)$ of the Lie algebroid $A$ of $G$. It was generalized by Weinstein, Mehta, and Abad-Crainic to a morphism from the Bott-Shulman-Stasheff complex $Ω(BG)$ to a (suitably defined) Weil algebra $W(A)$. In this paper, we will give an approach to the Van Est map in terms of the Perturbation Lemma of homological algebra. This approach is used to establish the basic properties of the Van Est map. In particular, we show that on the normalized subcomplex, the Van Est map restricts to an algebra morphism.

Linearization of Poisson Lie group structures

We show that for any coboundary Poisson Lie group G, the Poisson structure on G^* is linearizable at the group unit. This strengthens a result of Enriquez-Etingof-Marshall, who had established formal linearizability of G^* for quasi-triangular Poisson Lie groups G. We also prove linearizability properties for the group multiplication in G^* and for Poisson Lie group morphisms, with similar assumptions.

Dirac Lie Groups

A classical theorem of Drinfel'd states that the category of simply connected Poisson Lie groups H is isomorphic to the category of Manin triples (d, g, h), where h is the Lie algebra of H. In this paper, we consider Dirac Lie groups, that is, Lie groups H endowed with a multiplicative Courant algebroid A and a Dirac structure E /subset A for which the multiplication is a Dirac morphism. It turns out that the simply connected Dirac Lie groups are classified by so-called Dirac Manin triples. We give an explicit construction of the Dirac Lie group structure defined by a Dirac Manin triple, and develop its basic properties.

On the Verlinde formulas for SO(3)-bundles

This paper computes the quantization of the moduli space of flat SO(3)-bundles over an oriented surface with boundary, with prescribed holonomies around the boundary circles. The result agrees with the generalized Verlinde formula conjectured by Fuchs and Schweigert.

Tilings defined by affine Weyl groups

Let W be a Weyl group, presented as a crystallographic reflection group on a Euclidean vector space V, and C an open Weyl chamber. In a recent paper, Waldspurger proved that the images (id-w)(C), for Weyl group elements w, are all disjoint, and their union is the closed cone spanned by the positive roots. We show that similarly, if A is the Weyl alcove, the images (id-w)(A), for affine Weyl group elements w, are all disjoint, and their union is V.

Courant algebroids and Poisson Geometry

Given a manifold M with an action of a quadratic Lie algebra d, such that all stabilizer algebras are co-isotropic in d, we show that the product M\times d becomes a Courant algebroid over M. If the bilinear form on d is split, the choice of transverse Lagrangian subspaces g_1, g_2 of d defines a bivector field on M, which is Poisson if (d,g_1,g_2) is a Manin triple. In this way, we recover the Poisson structures of Lu-Yakimov, and in particular the Evens-Lu Poisson structures on the variety of Lagrangian Grassmannians and on the de Concini-Procesi compactifications. Various Poisson maps between such examples are interpreted in terms of the behaviour of Lagrangian splittings under Courant morphisms.

Pure Spinors on Lie groups

For any manifold M, the direct sum TM \oplus T*M carries a natural inner product given by the pairing of vectors and covectors. Differential forms on M may be viewed as spinors for the corresponding Clifford bundle, and in particular there is a notion of \emph{pure spinor}. In this paper, we study pure spinors and Dirac structures in the case when M=G is a Lie group with a bi-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric, e.g. G semi-simple. The applications of our theory include the construction of distinguished volume forms on conjugacy classes in G, and a new approach to the theory of quasi-Hamiltonian G-spaces.

The basic gerbe over a compact simple Lie group

Let $G$ be a compact, simply connected simple Lie group. We give a construction of an equivariant gerbe with connection on $G$, with equivariant 3-curvature representing a generator of $H^3_G(G,\Z)$. Technical tools developed in this context include a gluing construction for gerbes and a theory of equivariant bundle gerbes.

Clifford algebras and the Duflo isomorphism

This article summarizes joint work with A. Alekseev (Geneva) on the Duflo isomorphism for quadratic Lie algebras. We describe a certain quantization map for Weil algebras, generalizing both the Duflo map and the quantization map for Clifford algebras. In this context, Duflo's theorem generalizes to a statement in equivariant cohomology.
