A hierarchy of exactly solvable spin-1/2 chains with so(N)_1 critical points

We construct a hierarchy of exactly solvable spin-1/2 chains with so(N)_1 critical points. Our construction is based on the framework of condensate-induced transitions between topological phases. We employ this framework to construct a Hamiltonian term that couples N transverse field Ising chains such that the resulting theory is critical and described by the so(N)_1 conformal field theory. By employing spin duality transformations, we then cast these spin chains for arbitrary N into translationally invariant forms that all allow exact solution by the means of a Jordan-Wigner transformation. For odd N our models generalize the phase diagram of the transverse field Ising chain, the simplest model in our hierarchy. For even N the models can be viewed as longer ranger generalizations of the XY chain, the next model in the hierarchy. We also demonstrate that our method of constructing spin chains with given critical points goes beyond exactly solvable models. Applying the same strategy to the Blume-Capel model, a spin-1 generalization of the Ising chain in a generic magnetic field, we construct another critical spin-1 chain with the predicted CFT describing the criticality.

Equivalent topological invariants for one-dimensional Majorana wires in symmetry class D

Topological superconductors in one spatial dimension exhibiting a single Majorana bound state at each end are distinguished from trivial gapped systems by a Z_2 topological invariant. Originally, this invariant was calculated by Kitaev in terms of the Pfaffian of the Majorana representation of the Hamiltonian: The sign of this Pfaffian divides the set of all gapped quadratic forms of Majorana fermions into two inequivalent classes. In the more familiar Bogoliubov de Gennes mean field description of superconductivity, an emergent particle hole symmetry gives rise to a quantized Zak-Berry phase the value of which is also a topological invariant. In this work, we explicitly show the equivalence of these two formulations by relating both of them to the phase winding of the transformation matrix that brings the Majorana representation matrix of the Hamiltonian into its Jordan normal form.

Unraveling of the fractional topological phase in one-dimensional flatbands with nontrivial topology

We consider a topologically non-trivial flat band structure in one spatial dimension in the presence of nearest and next nearest neighbor Hubbard interaction. The non-interacting band structure is characterized by a symmetry protected topologically quantized Berry phase. At certain fractional fillings, a gapped phase with a filling-dependent ground state degeneracy, and fractionally charged quasi-particles emerges. At filling 1/3, the ground states carry a fractional Berry phase in the momentum basis. These features at first glance suggest a certain analogy to the fractional quantum Hall scenario in two dimensions. We solve the interacting model analytically in the physically relevant limit of a large band gap in the underlying band structure, the analog of a lowest Landau level projection. Our solution affords a simple physical understanding of the properties of the gapped interacting phase. We pinpoint crucial differences to the fractional quantum Hall case by studying the Berry phase and the entanglement entropy associated with the degenerate ground states. In particular, we conclude that the `fractional topological phase in one-dimensional flatbands' is not a one-dimensional analog of the two-dimensional fractional quantum Hall states, but rather a charge density wave with a nontrivial Berry phase. Finally, the symmetry protected nature of the Berry phase of the interacting phase is demonstrated by explicitly constructing a gapped interpolation to a state with a trivial Berry phase.

Condensate-induced transitions and critical spin chains

We show that condensate-induced transitions between two-dimensional topological phases provide a general framework to relate one-dimensional spin models at their critical points. We demonstrate this using two examples. First, we show that two well-known spin chains, namely the XY chain and the transverse field Ising chain with only next-nearest-neighbor interactions, differ at their critical points only by a non-local boundary term and can be related via an exact mapping. The boundary term constrains the set of possible boundary conditions of the transverse field Ising chain, reducing the number of primary fields in the conformal field theory that describes its critical behavior. We argue that the reduction of the field content is equivalent to the confinement of a set of primary fields, in precise analogy to the confinement of quasiparticles resulting from a condensation of a boson in a topological phase. As the second example we show that when a similar confining boundary term is applied to the XY chain with only next-nearest-neighbor interactions, the resulting system can be mapped to a local spin chain with the u(1)_2 x u(1)_2 critical behavior predicted by the condensation framework.

Anyonic quantum spin chains: Spin-1 generalizations and topological stability

There are many interesting parallels between systems of interacting non-Abelian anyons and quantum magnetism, occuring in ordinary SU(2) quantum magnets. Here we consider theories of so-called su(2)_k anyons, well-known deformations of SU(2), in which only the first k+1 angular momenta of SU(2) occur. In this manuscript, we discuss in particular anyonic generalizations of ordinary SU(2) spin chains with an emphasis on anyonic spin S=1 chains. We find that the overall phase diagrams for these anyonic spin-1 chains closely mirror the phase diagram of the ordinary bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain including anyonic generalizations of the Haldane phase, the AKLT construction, and supersymmetric quantum critical points. A novel feature of the anyonic spin-1 chains is an additional topological symmetry that protects the gapless phases. Distinctions further arise in the form of an even/odd effect in the deformation parameter k when considering su(2)_k anyonic theories with k>4, as well as for the special case of the su(2)_4 theory for which the spin-1 representation plays a special role. We also address anyonic generalizations of spin-1/2 chains with a focus on the topological protection provided for their gapless ground states. Finally, we put our results into context of earlier generalizations of SU(2) quantum spin chains, in particular so-called (fused) Temperley-Lieb chains.

Spin-singlet Gaffnian wave function for fractional quantum Hall systems

We characterize in detail a wave function conceivable in fractional quantum Hall systems where a spin or equivalent degree of freedom is present. This wave function combines the properties of two previously proposed quantum Hall wave functions, namely the non-Abelian spin-singlet state and the nonunitary Gaffnian wave function. This is a spin-singlet generalization of the spin-polarized Gaffnian, which we call the "spin-singlet Gaffnian" (SSG). In this paper we present evidence demonstrating that the SSG corresponds to the ground state of a certain local Hamiltonian, which we explicitly construct, and, further, we provide a relatively simple analytic expression for the unique ground-state wave functions, which we define as the zero energy eigenstates of that local Hamiltonian. In addition, we have determined a certain nonunitary, rational conformal field theory which provides an underlying description of the SSG and we thus conclude that the SSG is ungapped in the thermodynamic limit. In order to verify our construction, we implement two recently proposed techniques for the analysis of fractional quantum Hall trial states: The "spin dressed squeezing algorithm", and the "generalized Pauli principle".

One-dimensional itinerant interacting non-Abelian anyons

We construct models of interacting itinerant non-Abelian anyons moving along one-dimensional chains. We focus on itinerant Ising (Majorana) and Fibonacci anyons, which are, respectively, related to SU(2)_2 and SU(2)_3 anyons and also, respectively, describe quasiparticles of the Moore-Read and Z_3-Read-Rezayi fractional quantum Hall states. Following the derivation of the electronic large-U effective Hubbard model, we derive effective anyonic t-J models for the low-energy sectors. Solving these models by exact diagonalization, we find a fractionalization of the anyons into charge and (neutral) anyonic degrees of freedom -- a generalization of spin-charge separation of electrons which occurs in Luttinger liquids. A detailed description of the excitation spectrum can be performed by combining spectra for charge and anyonic sectors. The anyonic sector is the one of a squeezed chain of localized interacting anyons, and hence is described by the same conformal field theory (CFT), with central charge c=1/2 for Ising anyons and c=7/10 or c=4/5 for Fibonacci anyons with antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic coupling, respectively. The charge sector is the spectrum of a chain of hardcore bosons subject to phase shifts which coincide with the momenta of the combined anyonic eigenstates, revealing a subtle coupling between charge and anyonic excitations at the microscopic level (which we also find to be present in Luttinger liquids), despite the macroscopic fractionalization. The combined central charge extracted from the entanglement entropy between segments of the chain is shown to be 1+c, where c is the central charge of the underlying CFT of the localized anyon (squeezed) chain.

Local height probabilities in a composite Andrews-Baxter-Forrester model

We study the local height probabilities in a composite height model, derived from the restricted solid-on-solid model introduced by Andrews, Baxter and Forrester, and their connection with conformal field theory characters. The obtained conformal field theories also describe the critical behavior of the model at two different critical points. In addition, at criticality, the model is equivalent to a one-dimensional chain of anyons, subject to competing two- and three-body interactions. The anyonic-chain interpretation provided the original motivation to introduce the composite height model, and by obtaining the critical behaviour of the composite height model, the critical behaviour of the anyonic chains is established as well. Depending on the overall sign of the hamiltonian, this critical behaviour is described by a diagonal coset-model, generalizing the minimal models for one sign, and by Fateev-Zamolodchikov parafermions for the other.

Integrability in anyonic quantum spin chains via a composite height model

Recently, properties of collective states of interacting non-abelian anyons have attracted a considerable attention. We study an extension of the `golden chain model', where two- and three-body interactions are competing. Upon fine-tuning the interaction, the model is integrable. This provides an additional integrable point of the model, on top of the integrable point, when the three-body interaction is absent. To solve the model, we construct a new, integrable height model, in the spirit of the restricted solid-on-solid model solved by Andrews, Baxter and Forrester. The heights in our model live on both the sites and links of the square lattice. The model is solved by means of the corner transfer matrix method. We find a connection between local height probabilities and characters of a conformal field theory governing the critical properties at the integrable point. In the antiferromagnetic regime, the criticality is described by the Z_k parafermion conformal field theory, while the su(2)_1 x su(2)_1 x su(2)_(k-2) / su(2)_k coset conformal field theory describes the ferromagnetic regime.

Fractionalization of itinerant anyons in one dimensional chains

We construct models of interacting itinerant non-Abelian anyons moving along one-dimensional chains, focusing in particular on itinerant Ising anyon chains, and derive effective anyonic t-J models for the low energy sectors. Solving these models by exact diagonalization, we find a fractionalization of the anyons into charge and (non-Abelian) anyonic degrees of freedom -- a generalization of spin-charge separation of electrons which occurs in Luttinger liquids. A detailed description of the excitation spectrum by combining spectra for charge and anyonic sectors requires a subtle coupling between charge and anyonic excitations at the microscopic level (which we also find to be present in Luttinger liquids), despite the macroscopic fractionalization.

From Irrational to Non-Unitary: on the Haffnian and Haldane-Rezayi wave functions

We study the Haffnian and Haldane-Rezayi quantum Hall wave functions and their quasihole excitations by means of their `root configurations', and point out a close connection between these seemingly different states. For both states, we formulate a `generalized Pauli-principle', which allows to count the degeneracies of these states. The connection between these states might elucidate the underlying theory describing the `irrational' Haffnian state.

Microscopic models of interacting Yang-Lee anyons

Collective states of interacting non-Abelian anyons have recently been studied mostly in the context of certain fractional quantum Hall states, such as the Moore-Read state proposed to describe the physics of the quantum Hall plateau at filling fraction v = 5/2. In this manuscript, we further expand this line of research and present non-unitary generalizations of interacting anyon models. In particular, we introduce the notion of Yang-Lee anyons, discuss their relation to the so-called `Gaffnian' quantum Hall wave function, and describe an elementary model for their interactions. A one-dimensional version of this model -- a non-unitary generalization of the original golden chain model -- can be fully understood in terms of an exact algebraic solution and numerical diagonalization. We discuss the gapless theories of these chain models for general su(2)_k anyonic theories and their Galois conjugates. We further introduce and solve a one-dimensional version of the Levin-Wen model for non-unitary Yang-Lee anyons.

Clebsch-Gordan and 6j-coefficients for rank two quantum groups

We calculate (q-deformed) Clebsch-Gordan and 6j-coefficients for rank two quantum groups. We explain in detail how such calculations are done, which should allow the reader to perform similar calculations in other cases. Moreover, we tabulate the q-Clebsch-Gordan and 6j-coefficients explicitly, as well as some other topological data associated with theories corresponding to rank-two quantum groups. Finally, we collect some useful properties of the fusion rules of particular conformal field theories.

Chiral correlators of the Ising conformal field theory

We derive explicit expressions for the conformal blocks of the Ising conformal field theory, for the correlators of an arbitrary number of primary fields. These results are obtained from the bosonized description of the Ising model. Interestingly, correlators involving Majorana fermions, can be obtained in two different ways, giving rise to identities between the `bosonic' and `fermionic' description of these correlators. These identities are generalizations of the famous Cauchy-identity. The conformal blocks of the Ising model are used to derive expression for the conformal blocks of the su(2)_2 WZW conformal field theory.

Collective States of Interacting Anyons, Edge States, and the Nucleation of Topological Liquids

Quantum mechanical systems, whose degrees of freedom are so-called su(2)_k anyons, form a bridge between ordinary SU(2) spin systems and systems of interacting non-Abelian anyons. Such a connection can be made for arbitrary spin-S systems, and we explicitly discuss spin-1/2 and spin-1 systems. Anyonic spin-1/2 chains exhibit a topological protection mechanism that stabilizes their gapless ground states and which vanishes only in the limit (k to infinity) of the ordinary spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. For anyonic spin-1 chains we find their phase diagrams to closely mirror the one of the biquadratic SU(2) spin-1 chain. Our results describe at the same time nucleation of different 2D topological quantum fluids within a `parent' non-Abelian quantum Hall state, arising from a macroscopic occupation of localized, interacting anyons. The edge states between the `nucleated' and the `parent' liquids are neutral, and correspond precisely to the gapless modes of the anyonic chains.

Domain walls, fusion rules and conformal field theory in the quantum Hall regime

We provide a simple way to obtain the fusion rules associated with elementary quasi-holes over quantum Hall wave functions, in terms of domain walls. The knowledge of the fusion rules is helpful in the identification of the underlying conformal field theory describing the wave functions. We obtain the fusion rules, and explicitly give a conformal field theory description, for a two-parameter family (k,r) of wave functions. These include the Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states when r=2. The `gaffnian' wave function is the prototypical example for r>2, in which case the conformal field theory is non-unitary.

Degeneracy of non-abelian quantum Hall states on the torus: domain walls and conformal field theory

We analyze the non-abelian Read-Rezayi quantum Hall states on the torus, where it is natural to employ a mapping of the many-body problem onto a one-dimensional lattice model. On the thin torus--the Tao-Thouless (TT) limit--the interacting many-body problem is exactly solvable. The Read-Rezayi states at filling $ν=\frac k {kM+2}$ are known to be exact ground states of a local repulsive $k+1$-body interaction, and in the TT limit this is manifested in that all states in the ground state manifold have exactly $k$ particles on any $kM+2$ consecutive sites. For $M\neq 0$ the two-body correlations of these states also imply that there is no more than one particle on $M$ adjacent sites. The fractionally charged quasiparticles and quasiholes appear as domain walls between the ground states, and we show that the number of distinct domain wall patterns gives rise to the nontrivial degeneracies, required by the non-abelian statistics of these states. In the second part of the paper we consider the quasihole degeneracies from a conformal field theory (CFT) perspective, and show that the counting of the domain wall patterns maps one to one on the CFT counting via the fusion rules. Moreover we extend the CFT analysis to topologies of higher genus.

Collective states of interacting Fibonacci anyons

We show that chains of interacting Fibonacci anyons can support a wide variety of collective ground states ranging from extended critical, gapless phases to gapped phases with ground-state degeneracy and quasiparticle excitations. In particular, we generalize the Majumdar-Ghosh Hamiltonian to anyonic degrees of freedom by extending recently studied pairwise anyonic interactions to three-anyon exchanges. The energetic competition between two- and three-anyon interactions leads to a rich phase diagram that harbors multiple critical and gapped phases. For the critical phases and their higher symmetry endpoints we numerically establish descriptions in terms of two-dimensional conformal field theories. A topological symmetry protects the critical phases and determines the nature of gapped phases.
