Hypergeometric L-functions in average polynomial time

We describe an algorithm for computing, for all primes $p \leq X$, the mod-$p$ reduction of the trace of Frobenius at $p$ of a fixed hypergeometric motive in time quasilinear in $X$. This combines the Beukers--Cohen--Mellit trace formula with average polynomial time techniques of Harvey et al.

On the distribution of the Picard ranks of the reductions of a $K3$ surface

We report on our results concerning the distribution of the geometric Picard ranks of $K3$ surfaces under reduction modulo various primes. In the situation that $\rk \Pic S_{\overline{K}}$ is even, we introduce a quadratic character, called the jump character, such that $\rk \Pic S_{\overline\bbF_{\!\frakp}} > \rk \Pic S_{\overline{K}}$ for all good primes, at which the character evaluates to $(-1)$.

Arithmetic invariants from Sato--Tate moments

We give some arithmetic-geometric interpretations of the moments M_2[a_1], M_1[a_2], and M_1[s_2] of the Sato-Tate group of an abelian variety A defined over a number field by relating them to the ranks of the endomorphism ring and Néron-Severi group of A.

Zeta functions of nondegenerate hypersurfaces in toric varieties via controlled reduction in $p$-adic cohomology

We give an interim report on some improvements and generalizations of the Abbott-Kedlaya-Roe method to compute the zeta function of a nondegenerate ample hypersurface in a projectively normal toric variety over $\mathbb{F}_p$ in linear time in $p$. These are illustrated with a number of examples including K3 surfaces, Calabi-Yau threefolds, and a cubic fourfold. The latter example is a non-special cubic fourfold appearing in the Ranestad-Voisin coplanar divisor on moduli space; this verifies that the coplanar divisor is not a Noether-Lefschetz divisor in the sense of Hassett.

Computing Zeta Functions of Cyclic Covers in Large Characteristic

We describe an algorithm to compute the zeta function of a cyclic cover of the projective line over a finite field of characteristic $p$ that runs in time $p^{1/2 + o(1)}$. We confirm its practicality and effectiveness by reporting on the performance of our SageMath implementation on a range of examples. The algorithm relies on Gonçalves's generalization of Kedlaya's algorithm for cyclic covers, and Harvey's work on Kedlaya's algorithm for large characteristic.

On the arithmetic of a family of degree-two K3 surfaces

Let $\mathbb{P}$ denote the weighted projective space with weights $(1,1,1,3)$ over the rationals, with coordinates $x,y,z,$ and $w$; let $\mathcal{X}$ be the generic element of the family of surfaces in $\mathbb{P}$ given by \begin{equation*} X\colon w^2=x^6+y^6+z^6+tx^2y^2z^2. \end{equation*} The surface $\mathcal{X}$ is a K3 surface over the function field $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. In this paper, we explicitly compute the geometric Picard lattice of $\mathcal{X}$, together with its Galois module structure, as well as derive more results on the arithmetic of $\mathcal{X}$ and other elements of the family $X$.

Traces, high powers and one level density for families of curves over finite fields

The zeta function of a curve $C$ over a finite field may be expressed in terms of the characteristic polynomial of a unitary matrix $Θ_C$. We develop and present a new technique to compute the expected value of $\mathrm{Tr}(Θ_C^n)$ for various moduli spaces of curves of genus $g$ over a fixed finite field in the limit as $g$ is large, generalizing and extending the work of Rudnick and Chinis. This is achieved by using function field zeta functions, explicit formulae, and the densities of prime polynomials with prescribed ramification types at certain places as given by Bucur, David, Feigon, Kaplan, Lalín and Wood [BDF$^+$16] and by Zhao. We extend [BDF$^+$16] by describing explicit dependence on the place and give an explicit proof of the Lindelöf bound for function field Dirichlet $L$-functions $L(1/2 + it, χ)$. As applications, we compute the one-level density for hyperelliptic curves, cyclic $\ell$-covers, and cubic non-Galois covers.

Variation of Neron-Severi ranks of reductions of K3 surfaces

We study the behavior of geometric Picard ranks of K3 surfaces over the rationals under reduction modulo primes. We compute these ranks for reductions of smooth quartic surfaces modulo all primes $p<2^{16}$ in several representative examples and investigate the resulting statistics.

Asymptotic expansions, $L$-values and a new Quantum Modular Form

In 2010 Zagier introduced the notion of a quantum modular form. One of his first examples was the "strange" function $F(q)$ of Kontsevich. Here we produce a new example of a quantum modular form by making use of some of Ramanujan's mock theta functions. Using these functions and their transformation behaviour, we also compute asymptotic expansions similar to expansions of $F(q)$.

A search for Wilson primes

A Wilson prime is a prime p such that (p-1)! = -1 mod p^2. We report on a search for Wilson primes up to 2 * 10^13, and describe several new algorithms that were used in the search. In particular we give the first known algorithm that computes (p-1)! mod p^2 in average polynomial time per prime.

Faster deterministic integer factorization

The best known unconditional deterministic complexity bound for computing the prime factorization of an integer N is O(M_int(N^(1/4) log N)), where M_int(k) denotes the cost of multiplying k-bit integers. This result is due to Bostan--Gaudry--Schost, following the Pollard--Strassen approach. We show that this bound can be improved by a factor of (log log N)^(1/2).
