Replica theory for the rate functional of the empirical spectral distribution function of diluted Hermitian matrices

We develop a replica-based framework for the scaled cumulant-generating functional of the empirical spectral distribution function $i_C$ of diluted Hermitian random matrices. Within a replica-symmetric saddle-point assumption, this construction yields a candidate rate functional for fluctuations of $i_C$. As an illustrative application, we consider adjacency matrices of unweighted Erdős-Rényi random graphs with mean degree $c$. We derive explicit expressions for the first two cumulants of $i_C$, indicate how higher cumulants can be obtained from further functional derivatives, and compute the rate function of Fourier coefficients, equivalently of selected linear spectral statistics. The replica-symmetric predictions are tested against exact numerical diagonalization and show good agreement in the accessible fluctuation regime. The approach provides a basis for studying rate functionals of spectral observables in sparse random matrix ensembles.

On Lorentzian symmetries of quantum information

A foundational result in relativistic quantum information theory due to Peres, Scudo, and Terno, is that von Neumann entropy is not Lorentz invariant. Motivated by the "It from Qubit" paradigm, here we show that Lorentzian symmetries of quantum information emerge naturally in a pre-spacetime setting, without any reference to external variables such as position or momentum. In particular, we derive the natural action of the restricted Lorentz group $\text{SO}^+(1,3)$ on the internal degrees of freedom of a single qubit from a simple, information-theoretic principle we refer to as preservation of linear entropy. It is then shown that the Lorentz invariance of the linear entropy of a relativistic qubit is a special case of a much more general phenomenon, namely, that any spectral invariant of an operator we term the '$W$-matrix' is an $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb C)^{\otimes n}$ invariant scalar. Consequently, the linear $n$-partite quantum mutual information is shown to be an $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb C)^{\otimes n}$ invariant for all $n$-qubit states. Finally, we show that the correlation function associated with a pair of qubits in the singlet state yields the Minkowski metric on the space of qubit observables, whose symmetry group is the full Lorentz group $\text{SO}(1,3)$. In accordance with the "It from Qubit" paradigm, our results thus establish the natural emergence of relativistic spacetime structure from intrinsic properties of quantum information.

Spectral properties of a Non-Hermitian extension of the diluted Wishart ensemble

We develop a theoretical framework based on the cavity and replica methods to analyze the spectral properties of sparse asymmetric correlation matrices of the form $\boldsymbol{F} = (\boldsymbol{X}\boldsymbol{Y}^\top + ω\boldsymbol{Y}\boldsymbol{X}^\top)/2T$, where $\boldsymbol{X}$ and $\boldsymbol{Y}$ are adjacency matrices of weighted Erdős--Rényi random graphs. We examine how the spectral density evolves as the asymmetry parameter $ω$ varies from $0 < ω< 1$ (nearly symmetric matrices) to $-1 < ω\le 0$ (nearly antisymmetric matrices). Analytical predictions are validated through exact numerical diagonalization, showing excellent agreement with theoretical results in the thermodynamic limit.

Numerical study of the properties of a holographic superconductor from an anti-de Sitter-Einstein-Born-Infeld black hole with backreaction

We study numerically an $s$-wave holographic superconductor from an anti-de Sitter-Einstein-Born-Infeld black hole with backreaction in the context of the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence. By introducing a parameter $G$ to tune the effects of the backreaction, we can study non-perturbatively how the condensation and conductivity of the superconductor change as the backreaction increases. We find that for small values of $G$, increasing the nonlinearity of the Born-Infeld model makes the formation of the condensate harder -- consistent with previous results reported in the literature -- while for values of $G$ close to one, the opposite effect occurs; increasing the nonlinearity slightly facilitates its formation. This result is confirmed by making similar studies for the electrical conductivity of the superconductor and the penetration depth of the Meissner effect. Moreover, we analize in detail the superfluid density in these systems. We also determine how the ratio $ω_g/T_c$ varies for different intensities of nonlinearity and backreaction, showing in particular that large deviations from the so-called universal value arise as backreaction becomes stronger.

Analytic solution of the two-star model with correlated degrees

Exponential random graphs are important to model the structure of real-world complex networks. Here we solve the two-star model with degree-degree correlations in the sparse regime. The model constraints the average correlation between the degrees of adjacent nodes (nearest neighbors) and between the degrees at the end-points of two-stars (next nearest neighbors). We compute exactly the network free energy and show that this model undergoes a first-order transition to a condensed phase. For non-negative degree correlations between next nearest neighbors, the degree distribution inside the condensed phase has a single peak at the largest degree, while for negative degree correlations between next nearest neighbors the condensed phase is characterized by a bimodal degree distribution. We calculate the degree assortativities and show they are non-monotonic functions of the model parameters, with a discontinuous behavior at the first-order transition. The first-order critical line terminates at a second-order critical point, whose location in the phase diagram can be accurately determined. Our results can help to develop more detailed models of complex networks with correlated degrees.

Noise Effects on the Wilczek-Zee Geometric Phase

Non-abelian geometric phases have been proposed as an essential ingredient in logical gate implementation -- their geometric nature guarantees their invariance under reparametrizations of the associated cyclic path in parameter space. However, they are still dependent on deformations of that path, due to, e.g., noise. The first question that we tackle in this work is how to quantify in a meaningful way this effect of noise, focusing, for concreteness, on the nuclear quadrupole resonance hamiltonian -- other systems of this nature can clearly be treated analogously. We consider a precessing magnetic field that drives adiabatically a degenerate doublet, and is subjected to noise, the effects of which on the Wilczek-Zee holonomy are computed analytically. A critical review of previous related works reveals a series of assumptions, like sudden jumps in the field, or the presence of white noise, that might violate adiabaticity. We propose a state-independent measure of the effect, and then consider sinusoidal noise in the field, of random amplitude and phase. We find that all integer noise frequencies $m \neq 2$ behave similarly, in a manner reminiscent of the abelian case, but that noise of frequency $m = 2$ has a very different, and, at the same time, very pronounced effect, that might well affect robustness estimations.

Symmetric Multiqudit States: Stars, Entanglement, Rotosensors

A constellation of $N=d-1$ Majorana stars represents an arbitrary pure quantum state of dimension $d$ or a permutation-symmetric state of a system consisting of $n$ qubits. We generalize the latter construction to represent in a similar way an arbitrary symmetric pure state of $k$ subsystems with $d$ levels each. For $d\geq 3$, such states are equivalent, as far as rotations are concerned, to a collection of various spin states, with definite relative complex weights. Following Majorana's lead, we introduce a multiconstellation, consisting of the Majorana constellations of the above spin states, augmented by an auxiliary, "spectator" constellation, encoding the complex weights. Examples of stellar representations of symmetric states of four qutrits, and two spin-$3/2$ systems, are presented. We revisit the Hermite and Murnaghan isomorphisms, which relate multipartite states of various spins, number of parties, and even symmetries. We show how the tools introduced can be used to analyze multipartite entanglement and to identify optimal quantum rotosensors, i.e., pure states which are maximally sensitive to rotations around a specified axis, or averaged over all axes.

Quantum quench in a driven Ising chain

We consider the Ising chain driven by oscillatory transverse magnetic fields. For certain parameter regimes, we reveal a hidden integrable structure in the problem, which allows access to the \textit{exact time-evolution} in this driven quantum system. We compute time-evolved one- and two-point functions following a quench that activates the driving. It is shown that this model does not heat up to infinite temperature, despite the absence of energy conservation, and we further discuss the generalization to a family of driven Hamiltonians that do not suffer heating to infinite temperature, despite the absence of integrability and disorder. The particular model studied in detail also presents a route for realising exotic physics (such as the E8 perturbed conformal field theory) via driving in quantum chains that could otherwise never realise such behaviour. In particular we numerically confirm that the ratio of the meson excitations masses is given by the golden ratio.

Analytic approach for the number statistics of non-Hermitian random matrices

We introduce a powerful analytic method to study the statistics of the number $\mathcal{N}_{\textbf{A}}(γ)$ of eigenvalues inside any contour $γ\in \mathbb{C}$ for infinitely large non-Hermitian random matrices ${\textbf A}$. Our generic approach can be applied to different random matrix ensembles, even when the analytic expression for the joint distribution of eigenvalues is not known. We illustrate the method on the adjacency matrices of weighted random graphs with asymmetric couplings, for which standard random-matrix tools are inapplicable. The main outcome is an effective theory that determines the cumulant generating function of $\mathcal{N}_{\textbf{A}}$ via a path integral along $γ$, with the path probability distribution following from the solution of a self-consistent equation. We derive the expressions for the mean and the variance of $\mathcal{N}_{\textbf{A}}$ as well as for the rate function governing rare fluctuations of ${\mathcal{N}}_{\textbf{A}}{(γ)}$. All theoretical results are compared with direct diagonalization of finite random matrices, exhibiting an excellent agreement.

Phase transitions in atypical systems induced by a condensation transition on graphs

Random graphs undergo structural phase transitions that are crucial for dynamical processes and cooperative behavior of models defined on graphs. In this work we investigate the impact of a first-order structural transition on the thermodynamics of the Ising model defined on Erdös-Rényi random graphs, as well as on the eigenvalue distribution of the adjacency matrix of the same graphical model. The structural transition in question yields graph samples exhibiting condensation, characterized by a large number of nodes having degrees in a narrow interval. We show that this condensation transition induces distinct thermodynamic first-order transitions between the paramagnetic and the ferromagnetic phases of the Ising model. The condensation transition also leads to an abrupt change in the global eigenvalue statistics of the adjacency matrix, which renders the second moment of the eigenvalue distribution discontinuous. As a side result, we derive the critical line determining the percolation transition in Erdös-Rényi graph samples that feature condensation of degrees.

When geometric phases turn topological

Geometric phases, accumulated when a quantum system traces a cycle in quantum state space, do not depend on the parametrization of the cyclic path, but do depend on the path itself. In the presence of noise that deforms the path, the phase gets affected, compromising the robustness of possible applications, e.g., in quantum computing. We show that for a special class of spin states, called anticoherent, and for paths that correspond to a sequence of rotations in physical space, the phase only depends on topological characteristics of the path, in particular, its homotopy class, and is therefore immune to noise.
