Momentum fraction and hard scale dependence of double parton scattering in heavy-ion collisions

In a previous work, we studied the momentum fraction and hard--scale dependence of double parton scattering (DPS) in proton--proton collisions and the resulting dependence of the effective cross section on the final--state observables. In this paper, we extend those results to heavy--ion ($pA$ and $AA$) collisions, accounting for nuclear effects in the relevant kinematic region, namely shadowing and antishadowing. In addition to modifying the longitudinal parton distributions, these effects also alter the transverse parton distribution of the nucleus, for which we propose a simple new nuclear profile. We further hypothesize that partons inside a bound nucleon are more widely separated than in a free proton. We compute the effective cross section for the available $p$Pb data, obtaining reasonable agreement, and provide predictions for future measurements at the LHC. The observed dependence of our predictions on the final state indicates that DPS in heavy--ion collisions can be used to probe the transverse profile of the free proton and the bound nucleon, primarily in $pA$ collisions, as well as the transverse structure of the nucleus, mainly in $AA$ collisions.

Dissociative associated $J/\psi$ and dimuon production in Ap ultraperipheral collisions via double parton scattering

We study the dissociative associated production of a $J/\psi$ meson and a dimuon via double parton scattering (DPS) in nucleus--proton ultraperipheral collisions. This new channel, characterized by a rapidity gap, is sensitive to the photon and gluon distributions of the proton. We derive a DPS pocket formula for this process, together with a corresponding expression for the effective cross section. Furthermore, we demonstrate the kinematic dependence of the effective cross section and present predictions for the differential DPS cross section at LHC and FCC energies.

Evaluating the ratio of the exclusive vector meson photoproduction to inclusive hadron/jet production cross section in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions

Using the QCD color dipole picture to study exclusive vector meson and inclusive jet/open meson photoproduction, we calculate the ratio of elastic meson production to inclusive hadron production cross sections for ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions. Predictions are evaluated for run 4 of the Large Hadron Collider in proton-nucleus ($pA$) and nucleus-nucleus ($AA$) collisions. The dependencies of the ratio on jet/hadron transverse momentum and atomic number are investigated. The double ratio $R_{\mathrm{UPC}}$ for $AA$ over $pA$ collisions is also computed, which has been previously proposed as a new observable probing parton saturation physics.

Momentum fraction and hard scale dependence of double parton scattering

The effective cross section of double parton scattering in high-energy hadron collisions has been measured in proton--proton collisions, with significant variation among final-state observables, contrary to the idea of a universal value. Building upon our previous work, we incorporate the dependence on both the parton longitudinal momentum fraction $x$ and the process energy hard scale $\mu$ into the transverse part of the double parton distributions, using a Gaussian profile. Employing the experimental data from the LHC and Tevatron experiments (covering different processes, kinematic configurations, and center--of--mass energies), we perform a global fit of the model, extracting the parameters that describe the proton structure. With this result, it becomes possible to calculate the effective cross section for others observables, and we provide predictions for future measurements at the LHC.

Predictions for dimuon production in high-energy neutrino-proton collisions using the color dipole model

Interactions of high-energy neutrinos with matter can be studied through the angular separation observed in dimuon production, an observable particularly sensitive to the transverse momentum dynamics of partons. In this work, we develop a Monte Carlo event generator based on the color dipole model, interfaced with Pythia8 for parton showering and hadronization simulations, to predict dimuon production cross sections in neutrino-proton collisions at energies relevant to IceCube and future detectors. The color dipole formalism generates larger transverse momentum compared to standard Pythia predictions, enhancing the yield of angularly separated high-energy muons.

Valence and sea parton correlations in double parton scattering from data

The effective cross section of double parton scattering in proton collisions has been measured by many experiments with rather different results. Motivated by this fact, we assumed that the parton correlations in the transverse plane are different whether we have valence or sea partons. With this simple approach, we were able to fit the available data and found that sea parton pairs are more correlated in the transverse plane than valence--sea parton pairs.

DPS mechanism for associated $c\bar{c} l^+l^-$ production in $AA$ UPCs as a probe for photon density inside the nucleus

We discuss the associated $c\bar{c}$ and $l^+l^-$ pairs production in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at high energies. Such a channel provides a novel probe for double-parton scattering (DPS) at small $x$ enabling one to probe the photon density inside the nucleus. We have derived an analog of the standard central $pp$ pocket formula and studied the kinematical dependence of the effective cross section. Taking into account both elastic and non-elastic contributions, we have shown predictions for the DPS $c\bar c l^+l^-$ production cross section differential in charm quark rapidity and dilepton invariant mass and rapidity for LHC and a future collider.

DPS mechanism for associated $c\bar c b\bar b$ production in $AA$ UPCs

We discuss the associated $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$ quark pairs production in the double-parton scattering (DPS) process in ultraperipheral (UPCs) $AA$ collisions. We derive an analogue of the inclusive DPS pocket formula and the photon-energy dependent effective cross section considering an overlap between the hard SPS scatterings. We provide numerical predictions for the DPS cross sections for the $c\bar{c}b\bar{b}$ production process at the typical energies of $AA$ UPCs at the LHC and FCC colliders and also characterize the $A$ dependence of the total UPC DPS cross section.

Probing double parton scattering via associated open charm and bottom production in ultraperipheral $pA$ collisions

In this article, we propose a novel channel for phenomenological studies of the double-parton scattering (DPS) based upon associated production of charm $c\bar{c}$ and bottom $b\bar{b}$ quark pairs in well-separated rapidity intervals in ultra-peripheral high-energy proton-nucleus collisions. This process provides a direct access to the double-gluon distribution in the proton at small-$x$ and enables one to test the factorised DPS pocket formula. We have made the corresponding theoretical predictions for the DPS contribution to this process at typical LHC energies and beyond and we compute the energy-independent (but photon momentum fraction dependent) effective cross section.
