A note on the density of the partial regularity result in the class of viscosity solutions

We establish the density of the partial regularity result in the class of continuous viscosity solutions. Given a fully nonlinear equation, we prove the existence of a sequence entitled to the partial regularity result, approximating its solutions. Distinct conditions on the operator driving the equation lead to density in different topologies. Our findings include applications to inhomogeneous problems, with variable-coefficients models.

Non-convex Hamilton-Jacobi equations with gradient constraints

We study non-convex Hamilton-Jacobi equations in the presence of gradient constraints and produce new, optimal, regularity results for the solutions. A distinctive feature of those equations regards the existence of a lower bound to the norm of the gradient; it competes with the elliptic operator governing the problem, affecting the regularity of the solutions. This class of models relates to various important questions and finds applications in several areas; of particular interest is the modeling of optimal dividends problems for multiple insurance companies in risk theory and singular stochastic control in reversible investment models.

Existence and improved regularity for a nonlinear system with collapsing ellipticity

We study a nonlinear system made up of an elliptic equation of blended singular/degenerate type and Poisson's equation with a lowly integrable source. We prove the existence of a weak solution in any space dimension and, chiefly, derive an improved $\mathcal{C}^{1,\text{log-Lip}}$-regularity estimate using tangential analysis methods. The system illustrates a sophisticated version of the proverbial thermistor problem and our results are new even in simpler modelling scenarios.

Improved regularity for the $p$-Poisson equation

In this paper we produce new, optimal, regularity results for the solutions to $p$-Poisson equations. We argue through a delicate approximation method, under a smallness regime for the exponent $p$, that imports information from a limiting profile driven by the Laplace operator. Our arguments contain a novelty of technical interest, namely a sequential stability result; it connects the solutions to $p$-Poisson equations with harmonic functions, yielding improved regularity for the former. Our findings relate a smallness regime with improved $\mathcal{C}^{1,1-}$-estimates in the presence of $L^\infty$-source terms.

Regularity theory for the Isaacs equation through approximation methods

In this paper, we propose an approximation method to study the regularity of solutions to the Isaacs equation. This class of problems plays a paramount role in the regularity theory for fully nonlinear elliptic equations. First, it is a model-problem of a non-convex operator. In addition, the usual mechanisms to access regularity of solutions fall short in addressing these equations. We approximate an Isaacs equation by a Bellman one, and make assumptions on the latter to recover information for the former. Our techniques produce results in Sobolev and Hölder spaces; we also examine a few consequences of our main findings.

On a Mean Field Optimal Control Problem

In this paper we consider a mean field optimal control problem with an aggregation-diffusion constraint, where agents interact through a potential, in the presence of a Gaussian noise term. Our analysis focuses on a PDE system coupling a Hamilton-Jacobi and a Fokker-Planck equation, describing the optimal control aspect of the problem and the evolution of the population of agents, respectively. The main contribution of the paper is a result on the existence of solutions for the aforementioned system. We notice this model is in close connection with the theory of mean-field games systems. However, a distinctive feature concerns the nonlocal character of the interaction; it affects the drift term in the Fokker-Planck equation as well as the Hamiltonian of the system, leading to new difficulties to be addressed.

Geometric regularity for elliptic equations in double-divergence form

In this paper, we examine the regularity of the solutions to the double-divergence equation. We establish improved Hölder continuity as solutions approach their zero level-sets. In fact, we prove that $α$-Hölder continuous coefficients lead to solutions of class $\mathcal{C}^{1^-}$, locally. Under the assumption of Sobolev differentiable coefficients, we establish regularity in the class $\mathcal{C}^{1,1^-}$. Our results unveil improved continuity along a nonphysical free boundary, where the weak formulation of the problem vanishes. We argue through a geometric set of techniques, implemented by approximation methods. Such methods connect our problem of interest with a target profile. An iteration procedure imports information from this limiting configuration to the solutions of the double-divergence equation.

Regularity of solutions to a class of variable-exponent fully nonlinear elliptic equations

In the present paper, we propose the investigation of variable-exponent, degenerate/singular elliptic equations in non-divergence form. This current endeavor parallels the by now well established theory of functionals satisfying nonstandard growth condition, which in particular encompasses problems ruled by the $p(x)$-laplacian operator. Under rather general conditions, we prove viscosity solutions to variable exponent fully nonlinear elliptic equations are locally of class $C^{1,κ}$ for a universal constant $0< κ< 1$. A key feature of our estimates is that they do not depend on the modulus of continuity of exponent coefficients, and thus may be employed to investigate a variety of problems whose ellipticity degenerates and/or blows-up in a discontinuous fashion.

Interior Sobolev regularity for fully nonlinear parabolic equations

In the present paper, we establish sharp Sobolev estimates for solutions of fully nonlinear parabolic equations, under minimal, asymptotic, assumptions on the governing operator. In particular, we prove that solutions are in $W^{2,1;p}_{loc}$. Our argument unfolds by importing improved regularity from a limiting configuration. In this concrete case, we recur to the recession function associated with $F$. This machinery allows us to impose conditions solely on the original operator at the infinity of $\mathcal{S}(d)$. From a heuristic viewpoint, integral regularity would be set by the behavior of $F$ at the ends of that space. Moreover, we explore a number of consequences of our findings, and develop some related results; these include a parabolic version of Escauriaza's exponent, a universal modulus of continuity for the solutions and estimates in $p-BMO$ spaces.

Singular mean-filed games

Here, we prove the existence of smooth solutions for mean-field games with a singular mean-field coupling; that is, a coupling in the Hamilton-Jacobi equation of the form $g(m)=-m^{-α}$. We consider stationary and time-dependent settings. The function $g$ is monotone, but it is not bounded from below. With the exception of the logarithmic coupling, this is the first time that MFGs whose coupling is not bounded from below is examined in the literature. This coupling arises in models where agents have a strong preference for low-density regions. Paradoxically, this causes the agents to spread and prevents the creation of solutions with a very-low density. To prove the existence of solutions, we consider an approximate problem for which the existence of smooth solutions is known. Then, we prove new a priori bounds for the solutions that show that $\frac 1 m$ is bounded. Finally, using a limiting argument, we obtain the existence of solutions. The proof in the stationary case relies on a blow-up argument and in the time-dependent case on new bounds for $m^{-1}$.

Regularity for second order stationary mean-field games

In this paper, we prove the existence of classical solutions for second order stationary mean-field game systems. These arise in ergodic (mean-field) optimal control, convex degenerate problems in calculus of variations, and in the study of long-time behavior of time-dependent mean-field games. Our argument is based on the interplay between the regularity of solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in terms of the solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation and vice-versa. Because we consider different classes of couplings, distinct techniques are used to obtain a priori estimates for the density. In the case of polynomial couplings, we recur to an iterative method. An integral method builds upon the properties of the logarithmic function in the setting of logarithmic nonlinearities. This work extends substantially previous results by allowing for more general classes of Hamiltonians and mean-field assumptions.
