H$_3^+$ as a five-body problem described with explicitly correlated Gaussian basis sets

Various explicitly correlated Gaussian (ECG) basis sets are considered for the solution of the molecular Schrödinger equation with particular attention to the simplest polyatomic system, H$_3^+$. Shortcomings and advantages are discussed for plain ECGs, ECGs with the global vector representation, floating ECGs and their numerical projection, and ECGs with complex parameters. The discussion is accompanied with particle density plots to visualize the observations. In order to be able to use large complex ECG basis sets in molecular calculations, a numerically stable algorithm is developed, the efficiency of which is demonstrated for the lowest rotationally and vibrationally excited states of H$_2$ and H$_3^+$.

Bound and unbound rovibrational states of the methane-argon dimer

Peculiarities of the intermolecular rovibrational quantum dynamics of the methane-argon complex are studied using a new, ab initio potential energy surface [Y. N. Kalugina, S. E. Lokshtanov, V. N. Cherepanov, and A. A. Vigasin, J. Chem. Phys. 144, 054304 (2016)], variational rovibrational computations, and detailed symmetry considerations within the molecular symmetry group of this floppy complex as well as within the point groups corresponding to the local minimum structures. The computed (ro)vibrational states up to and beyond the dissociation asymptote are characterized using two limiting models: the rigidly rotating molecule's model and the coupled-rotor model of the rigidly rotating methane and an argon atom orbiting around it.

Non-adiabatic mass correction to the rovibrational states of molecules. Numerical application for the H$_2^+$ molecular ion

General transformation expressions of the second-order non-adiabatic Hamiltonian of the atomic nuclei, including the kinetic-energy correction terms, are derived upon the change from laboratory-fixed Cartesian coordinates to general curvilinear coordinate systems commonly used in rovibrational computations. The kinetic-energy or so-called "mass-correction" tensor elements are computed with the stochastic variational method and floating explicitly correlated Gaussian functions for the H$_2^+$ molecular ion in its ground electronic state. (Further numerical applications for the $^4$He$_2^+$ molecular ion are presented in the forthcoming paper, Paper II.) The general, curvilinear non-adiabatic kinetic energy operator expressions are used in the examples and non-adiabatic rovibrational energies and corrections are determined by solving the rovibrational Schrödinger equation including the diagonal Born--Oppenheimer as well as the mass-tensor corrections.

On the Calculation of Resonances in Pre-Born-Oppenheimer Molecular Structure Theory

The main motivation for this work is the exploration of rotational-vibrational states corresponding to electronic excitations in a pre-Born-Oppenheimer quantum theory of molecules. These states are often embedded in the continuum of the lower-lying dissociation channel of the same symmetry, and thus are thought to be resonances. In order to calculate rovibronic resonances, the pre-Born-Oppenheimer variational approach of [J. Chem. Phys. 137, 024104 (2012)], based on the usage of explicitly correlated Gaussian functions and the global vector representation, is extended with the complex coordinate rotation method. The developed computer program is used to calculate resonance energies and widths for the three-particle positronium anion, Ps$^-$, and the four-particle positronium molecule, Ps$_2$. Furthermore, the excited bound and resonance rovibronic states of the four-particle H$_2$ molecule are also considered. Resonance energies and widths are estimated for the lowest-energy resonances of H$_2$ beyond the $b\ ^3Σ_\mathrm{u}^+$ continuum.

Non-adiabatic mass-correction functions and rovibrational states of $^4$He$_2^+$ ($X\ ^2Σ_\text{u}^+$)

The mass-correction functions in the second-order non-adiabatic Hamiltonian are computed for the $^4$He$^+_2$ molecular ion using the variational method, floating explicitly correlated Gaussian functions, and a general coordinate-transformation formalism. When non-adiabatic rovibrational energy levels are computed using these (coordinate-dependent) mass-correction functions and a highly accurate potential energy and diagonal Born-Oppenheimer correction curve, significantly improved theoretical results are obtained for the nine rotational and two rovibrational intervals known from high-resolution spectroscopy experiments.

Explicitly correlated Gaussian functions with shifted-center and projection techniques in pre-Born-Oppenheimer calculations

Numerical projection methods are elaborated for the calculation of eigenstates of the non-relativistic many-particle Coulomb Hamiltonian with selected rotational and parity quantum numbers employing shifted explicitly correlated Gaussian functions, which are, in general, not eigenfunctions of the total angular momentum and parity operators. The increased computational cost of numerically projecting the basis functions onto the irreducible representations of the three dimensional rotation-inversion group is the price to pay for the increased flexibility of the basis functions. This increased flexibility allowed us to achieve a substantial improvement for the variational upper bound to the Pauli-allowed ground-state energy of the H$_3^+=\{$p$^+,$p$^+,$p$^+,$e$^-,$e$^-\}$ molecular ion treated as an explicit five-particle system. We compare our pre-Born-Oppenheimer result for this molecular ion with rovibrational results including non-adiabatic corrections.

Generalized elimination of the global translation from explicitly correlated Gaussian functions

This paper presents the multi-channel generalization of the center-of-mass kinetic energy elimination approach [Mol. Phys., 111 2086 (2013)] when the Schrödinger equation is solved variationally with explicitly correlated Gaussian functions. The approach has immediate relevance in many-particle systems which are handled without the Born--Oppenheimer approximation and can be employed also for Dirac-type Hamiltonians. The practical realization and numerical properties of solving the Schrödinger equation in laboratory-frame Cartesian coordinates are demonstrated for the ground rovibronic state of the H$_2^+=\lbrace\text{p}^+,\text{p}^+,\text{e}^+\rbrace$ ion and the H$_2=\lbrace\text{p}^+,\text{p}^+,\text{e}^+,\text{e}^+\rbrace$ molecule.

Rovibrational quantum dynamical computations for deuterated isotopologues of the methane-water dimer

Rovibrational states of the four dimers formed by the light and the heavy isotopologues of the methane and the water molecules are computed using a potential energy surface taken from the literature. The general rovibrational energy-level pattern characteristic to all systems studied is analyzed employing two models of a dimer: the rigidly rotating complex and the coupled system of two rigidly rotating monomers. The rigid-rotor model highlights the presence of rovibrational sequences corresponding to formally negative rotational excitation energies, which is explained in terms of the coupled-rotors picture.

Relativistic Kinetic-Balance Condition for Explicitly Correlated Basis Functions

This paper presents the derivation of a kinetic-balance condition for explicitly correlated basis functions employed in semi-classical relativistic calculations. Such a condition is important to ensure variational stability in algorithms based on the first-quantized Dirac theory of 1/2-fermions. We demonstrate that the kinetic-balance condition can be obtained from the row reduction process commonly applied to solve systems of linear equations. The resulting form of kinetic balance establishes a relation for the $4^N$ components of the spinor of an $N$-fermion system to the non-relativistic limit, which is in accordance with recent developments in the field of exact decoupling in relativistic orbital-based many-electron theory.

Elimination of the Translational Kinetic Energy Contamination in pre-Born-Oppenheimer Calculations

In this paper we present a simple strategy for the elimination of the translational kinetic energy contamination of the total energy in pre-Born--Oppenheimer calculations carried out in laboratory-fixed Cartesian coordinates (LFCCs). The simple expressions for the coordinates and the operators are thus preserved throughout the calculations, while the mathematical form and the parametrisation of the basis functions are chosen so that the translational and rotational invariances are respected. The basis functions are constructed using explicitly correlated Gaussian functions (ECGs) and the global vector representation. First, we observe that it is not possible to parametrise the ECGs so that the system is at rest in LFCCs and at the same time the basis functions are square-integrable with a non-vanishing norm. Then, we work out a practical strategy to circumvent this problem by making use of the properties of the linear transformation between the LFCCs and translationally invariant and center-of-mass Cartesian coordinates as well as the transformation properties of the corresponding basis function parameter matrices. By exploiting these formal mathematical relationships we can identify and separate the translational contamination terms in the matrix representation of the kinetic energy operator in the LFCC formalism. We present numerical examples for the translational contamination and its elimination for the two lowest rotational energy levels of the singlet hydrogen molecule, corresponding to para- and ortho-H2, respectively, treated as four-particle quantum systems.
