Persisting Meissner state and incommensurate phases of hard-core boson ladders in a flux

The phase diagram of a half-filled hard core boson two-leg ladder in a flux is investigated by means of numerical simulations based on the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) algorithm and bosonization. We calculate experimentally accessible observables such as the momentum distribution, as well as rung current, density wave and bond-order wave correlation functions, allowing us to identify the Mott Meissner and Mott Vortex states. We follow the transition from commensurate Meissner to incommensurate Vortex state at increasing interchain hopping till the critical value [Piraud et al. Phys. Rev. B v. 91, p. 140406 (2015)] above which the Meissner state is stable at any flux. For flux close to $π$, and below the critical hopping, we observe the formation of a second incommensuration in the Mott Vortex state that could be detectable in current experiments.

Effect of disorder on 2D topological merging transition from a Dirac semi-metal to a normal insulator

We study the influence of disorder on the topological transition from a two-dimensional Dirac semi-metal to an insulating state. This transition is described as a continuous merging of two Dirac points leading to a semi-Dirac spectrum at the critical point. The latter is characterized by a dispersion relation linear in one direction and quadratic in the orthogonal one. Using the self-consistent Born approximation and renormalization group we calculate the density of states above, below and in the vicinity of the transition in the presence of different types of disorder. Beyond the expected disorder smearing of the transition we find an intermediate disordered semi-Dirac phase. On one side this phase is separated from the insulating state by a continuous transition while on the other side it evolves through a crossover to the disordered Dirac phase.

Kondo screening by the surface modes of a strong topological insulator

We consider a magnetic impurity deposited on the surface of a strong topological insulator and interacting with the surface modes by a Kondo exchange interaction. Taking into account the warping of the Fermi line of the surface modes, we derive a mapping to an effective one dimensional model and show that the impurity is fully screened by the surface electrons except when the Fermi level lies exactly at the Dirac point. Using an Abrikosov fermion mean-field theory, we calculate the shape of the electronic density Friedel oscillation resulting from the presence of the Kondo screening cloud. We analyze quantitatively the observability of a six-fold symmetry in the Friedel oscillations for two prototype compounds: Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$.

Polar bosons in one-dimensional disordered optical lattices

We analyze the effects of disorder and quasi-disorder on the ground-state properties of ultra-cold polar bosons in optical lattices. We show that the interplay between disorder and inter-site interactions leads to rich phase diagrams. A uniform disorder leads to a Haldane-insulator phase with finite parity order, whereas the density-wave phase becomes a Bose-glass at very weak disorder. For quasi-disorder, the Haldane insulator connects with a gapped generalized incommesurate density wave without an intermediate critical region.

Diffusion at the Surface of Topological Insulators

We consider the transport properties of topological insulators surface states in the presence of uncorrelated point-like disorder, both in the classical and quantum regimes. The transport properties of those two-dimensional surface states depend strongly on the amplitude of the hexagonal warping of their Fermi surface. It is shown that a perturbative analysis of the warping fails to describe the transport in experimentally available topological insulators, such as Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3. Hence we develop a fully non-perturbative description of these effects. In particular, we find that the dependence of the warping amplitude on the Fermi energy manifests itself in a strong dependence of the diffusion constant on this Fermi energy, leading to several important experimental consequences. Moreover, the combination of a strong warping with an in plane Zeeman effect leads to an attenuation of conductance fluctuations in contrast to the situation of unwarped Dirac surface states.

Two dimensional Dirac fermions in the presence of long-range correlated disorder

We consider 2D Dirac fermions in the presence of three types of disorder: random scalar potential, random gauge potential and random mass with long-range correlations decaying as a power law. Using various methods such as the self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA), renormalization group (RG), the matrix Green function formalism and bosonisation we calculate the density of states and study the full counting statistics of fermionic transport at lower energy. The SCBA and RG show that the random correlated scalar potentials generate an algebraically small energy scale below which the density of states saturates to a constant value. For correlated random gauge potential, RG and bosonisation calculations provide consistent behavior of the density of states which diverges at zero energy in an integrable way. In the case of correlated random mass disorder the RG flow has a nontrivial infrared stable fixed point leading to a universal power-law behavior of the density of states and also to universal transport properties. In contrast to uncorrelated case the correlated scalar potential and random mass disorders give rise to deviation from the pseudodiffusive transport already to lowest order in disorder strength.

Spectral functions of two-band spinless fermion and single-band spin-1/2 fermion models

We examine zero-temperature one-particle spectral functions for the one-dimensional two-band spinless fermions with different velocities and general forward-scattering interactions. By using the bosonization technique and diagonalizing the model to two Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid Hamiltonians, we obtain general expressions for the spectral functions which are given in terms of the Appell hypergeometric functions. For the case of identical two-band fermions, corresponding to the SU(2) symmetric spin-1/2 fermions with repulsive interactions, the spectral functions can be expressed in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions and are shown to recover the double-peak structure suggesting the well-known "spin-charge" separation. By tuning the difference in velocities for the two-band fermions, we clarify the crossover in spectral functions from the "spin-charge" separation to the decoupled fermions. We discuss the relevance of our results to the spin-1/2 Hubbard model under a magnetic field which can be mapped onto two-band spinless fermions.

Quantum dynamics of a binary mixture of BECs in a double well potential: an Holstein-Primakoff approach

We study the quantum dynamics of a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in a double-well potential starting from a two-mode Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. Focussing on the regime where the number of atoms is very large, a mapping onto a SU(2) spin problem together with a Holstein-Primakoff transformation is performed. The quantum evolution of the number difference of bosons between the two wells is investigated for different initial conditions, which range from the case of a small imbalance between the two wells to a coherent spin state. The results show an instability towards a phase-separation above a critical positive value of the interspecies interaction while the system evolves towards a coherent tunneling regime for negative interspecies interactions. A comparison with a semiclassical approach is discussed together with some implications on the experimental realization of phase separation with cold atoms.

Statics and dynamics of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladders in a magnetic field

We investigate weakly coupled spin-1/2 ladders in a magnetic field. The work is motivated by recent experiments on the compound (C5H12N)2CuBr4 (BPCB). We use a combination of numerical and analytical methods, in particular the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, to explore the phase diagram and the excitation spectra of such a system. We give detailed results on the temperature dependence of the magnetization and the specific heat, and the magnetic field dependence of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate of single ladders. For coupled ladders, treating the weak interladder coupling within a mean-field or quantum Monte Carlo approach, we compute the transition temperature of triplet condensation and its corresponding antiferromagnetic order parameter. Existing experimental measurements are discussed and compared to our theoretical results. Furthermore we compute, using time dependent DMRG, the dynamical correlations of a single spin ladder. Our results allow to directly describe the inelastic neutron scattering cross section up to high energies. We focus on the evolution of the spectra with the magnetic field and compare their behavior for different couplings. The characteristic features of the spectra are interpreted using different analytical approaches such as the mapping onto a spin chain, a Luttinger liquid (LL) or onto a t-J model. For values of parameters for which such measurements exist, we compare our results to inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the compound BPCB and find excellent agreement. We make additional predictions for the high energy part of the spectrum that are potentially testable in future experiments.

Superfluidity and Anderson localisation for a weakly interacting Bose gas in a quasiperiodic potential

Using exact diagonalisation and Density Matrix Renormalisation group (DMRG) approach, we analyse the transition to a localised state of a weakly interacting quasi-1D Bose gas subjected to a quasiperiodic potential. The analysis is performed by calculating the superfluid fraction, density profile, momentum distribution and visibility for different periodicities of the second lattice and in the presence (or not) of a weak repulsive interaction. It is shown that the transition is sharper towards the maximally incommensurate ratio between the two lattice periodicities, and shifted to higher values of the second lattice strength by weak repulsive interactions. We also relate our results to recent experiments.

Measuring overlaps in mesoscopic spin glasses via conductance fluctuations

We consider the electonic transport in a mesoscopic metallic spin glasses. We show that the distribution of overlaps between spin configurations can be inferred from the reduction of the conductance fluctuations by the magnetic impurities. Using this property, we propose new experimental protocols to probe spin glasses directly through their overlaps.

Superconducting instability in 3 band metallic nanotubes

Motivated by recent experiments on small radius nanotubes, we study the superconducting instabilities of cylindrical (5,0) nanotubes. According to band structure calculations, thesenanotubes possess three bands at the Fermi energy. Using a fermionic renormalization group approach and a careful bosonization treatment,we consider the effect of different attractive interactions, mediated by phonons, within the Luttinger Liquid framework. We particularly focus on a superconducting instability specific to the three bands model we consider for the description of these (5,0) cylindrical nanotubes.

Phase transitions in the boson-fermion resonance model in one dimension

We study 1D fermions with photoassociation or with a narrow Fano-Feshbach resonance described by the Boson-Fermion resonance model. Using thebosonization technique, we derive a low-energy Hamiltonian of the system. We show that at low energy, the order parameters for the Bose Condensation and fermion superfluidity become identical, while a spin gap and a gap against the formation of phase slips are formed. As a result of these gaps, charge density wave correlations decay exponentially in contrast with the phases where only bosons or only fermions are present. We find a Luther-Emery point where the phase slips and the spin excitations can be described in terms of pseudofermions. This allows us to provide closed form expressions of the density-density correlations and the spectral functions. The spectral functions of the fermions are gapped, whereas the spectral functions of the bosons remain gapless. The application of a magnetic field results in a loss of coherence between the bosons and the fermion and the disappearance of the gap. Changing the detuning has no effect on the gap until either the fermion or the boson density is reduced to zero. Finally, we discuss the formation of a Mott insulating state in a periodic potential. The relevance of our results for experiments with ultracold atomic gases subject to one-dimensional confinement is also discussed.

Coulombian disorder in Charge Density Waves

When unscreened charged impurities are introduced in charge density wave system the long wavelength component of the disorder is long ranged and dominates static correlation functions. We calculate the x-ray intensity and find that it is identical to the one produced by thermal fluctuations in a disorder-free smectic-A. We suggest that this effect could be observed in the blue bronze material K$_{0.3}$MoO$_3$ doped with charged impurities such as Vanadium.

Quantitative expression of the spin gap via bosonization for a dimerized spin-1/2 chain

Using results on the mass gap in the sine-Gordon model combined with the exact amplitudes in the bosonized representation of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain and one-loop renormalization group, we derive a quantitative expression for the gap in a dimerized spin-1/2 chain. This expression is shown to be in good agreement with recent numerical estimates when a marginally irrelevant perturbation is taken into account.

Superconducting fluctuations in the Luther-Emery liquid

The single-particle superconducting Green's functions of a Luther-Emery liquid is computed by bosonization techniques. Using a formulation introduced by Poilblanc and Scalapino [Phys. Rev. B v. 66, art. 052513 (2002)], an asymptotic expression of the superconducting gap is deduced in the long wavelength and small frequency limit. Due to superconducting phase fluctuations, the gap exhibits as a function of size L a (1/L)^{1/2K_ρ} power-law decay as well as an interesting singularity at the spectral gap energy. Similarities and differences with the 2-leg t-J ladder are outlined.
