Beyond the Gegenbauer Paradigm: q-Orthogonal Kernels for Machine Learning

The performance of Support Vector Machines (SVMs) critically depends on the kernel function choice, which enables implicit mapping of data into high-dimensional feature spaces. While classical kernels like Radial Basis Function (RBF) remain popular, orthogonal polynomial kernels offer mathematically interpretable alternatives that can incorporate structured prior knowledge. This work extends the orthogonal polynomial kernel paradigm by introducing a novel family based on discrete $q$-Hermite I polynomials, a class of $q$-orthogonal polynomials that generalize classical Hermite polynomials through a deformation parameter $q$. We formally define the q-Hermite kernel and establish its validity under Mercer's theorem. The kernel's inherent boundedness properties naturally prevent annihilation and explosion effects without requiring explicit scaling mechanisms. Extensive experiments across 20 benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed kernel achieves competitive performance compared to both classical kernels and other orthogonal polynomial kernels, while offering advantages in numerical stability and computational simplicity. Our results confirm that $q$-orthogonal polynomials constitute a promising direction for kernel design, bridging mathematical elegance with practical machine learning applications, that provides conceptual and algorithmic resources that may be further extended to emerging quantum computing paradigms. To facilitate full reproducibility, we provide the complete implementation and experimental pipeline in an open-access GitHub repository at https://github.com/Kokechacho/SVMs-QSVMs.

Structural interpretability in SVMs with truncated orthogonal polynomial kernels

We study post-training interpretability for Support Vector Machines (SVMs) built from truncated orthogonal polynomial kernels. Since the associated reproducing kernel Hilbert space is finite-dimensional and admits an explicit tensor-product orthonormal basis, the fitted decision function can be expanded exactly in intrinsic RKHS coordinates. This leads to Orthogonal Representation Contribution Analysis (ORCA), a diagnostic framework based on normalized Orthogonal Kernel Contribution (OKC) indices. These indices quantify how the squared RKHS norm of the classifier is distributed across interaction orders, total polynomial degrees, marginal coordinate effects, and pairwise contributions. The methodology is fully post-training and requires neither surrogate models nor retraining. We illustrate its diagnostic value on a synthetic double-spiral problem and on a real five-dimensional echocardiogram dataset. The results show that the proposed indices reveal structural aspects of model complexity that are not captured by predictive accuracy alone.

Dunkl derivative from moment differentiation

The work analyzes the theory of Dunkl operator as a moment differential operator. This last operator generalizes the first one whenever the sequence of moments satisfies appropriate classical properties, classically considered in the general theory of ultraholomorphic and ultradifferentiable classes of functions. In this sense, the theory of Dunkl operator is then generalized. On the other hand, some features developed in Dunkl theory, such as Dunkl translation, have not been considered in the theory of moment differential equations yet, which leads to a common mutualism involving both theories.

Symmetric Truncated Freud polynomials

We define the family of symmetric truncated Freud polynomials $P_n(x;z)$, orthogonal with respect to the linear functional $\mathbf{u}$ defined by \begin{equation*} \langle \mathbf{u}, p(x)\rangle = \int_{-z}^z p(x)e^{-x^4}dx, \quad p\in \mathbb{P}, \quad z>0. \end{equation*} The semiclassical character of $P_n (x; z)$ as polynomials of class $4$ is stated. As a consequence, several properties of $P_n (x; z)$ concerning the coefficients $γ_n (z)$ in the three-term recurrence relation they satisfy as well as the moments and the Stieltjes function of $\mathbf{u}$ are studied. Ladder operators associated with such a linear functional and the holonomic equation that the polynomials $P_n (x; z)$ satisfy are deduced. Finally, an electrostatic interpretation of the zeros of such polynomials and their dynamics in terms of the parameter $z$ are given.

Mixed Multiple Orthogonal Laurent Polynomials on the Unit Circle

Mixed orthogonal Laurent polynomials on the unit circle of CMV type are constructed utilizing a matrix of moments and its Gauss--Borel factorization and employing a multiple extension of the CMV ordering. A systematic analysis of the associated multiple orthogonality and biorthogonality relations, and an examination of the degrees of the Laurent polynomials is given. Recurrence relations, expressed in terms of banded matrices, are found. These recurrence relations lay the groundwork for corresponding Christoffel-Darboux kernels and relations, as well as for elucidating the ABC theorem. The paper also develops the theory of diagonal Christoffel and Geronimus perturbations of the matrix of measures. Christoffel formulas are found for both perturbations.

On zero behavior of higher-order Sobolev-type discrete q-Hermite I orthogonal polynomials

In this work, we investigate the sequence of monic q-Hermite I-Sobolev type orthogonal polynomials of higher-order, denoted as $\{\mathbb{H}_{n}(x;q)\}_{n\geq 0}$, which are orthogonal with respect to the following non-standard inner product involving q-differences: \begin{equation*} \langle p,q\rangle_{λ}=\int_{-1}^{1}f\left( x\right) g\left(x\right) (qx,-qx;q)_{\infty }d_{q}(x)+λ\,(\mathscr{D}_{q}^{j}f)(α)(\mathscr{D}_{q}^{j}g)(α), \end{equation*} where $α\in \mathbb{R}\backslash (-1,1)$, $λ$ belongs to the set of positive real numbers, $\mathscr{D}_{q}^{j}$ denotes the $j$-th $q $-discrete analogue of the derivative operator, and $(qx,-qx;q)_{\infty}d_{q}(x)$ denotes the orthogonality weight with its points of increase in a geometric progression. We proceed to obtain the hypergeometric representation of $\mathbb{H}_{n}(x;q)$ and explicit expressions for the corresponding ladder operators. From the latter, we obtain a novel kind of three-term recurrence formula with rational coefficients associated with these polynomial family. Moreover, for certain real values of $α$, we present some results concerning the location of the zeros of $\mathbb{H}_n(x;q)$ and we perform a comprehensive analysis of their asymptotic behavior as the parameter $λ$ varies from zero to infinity.

On a moment generalization of some classical second-order differential equations generating classical orthogonal polynomials

The aim of the work is to construct new polynomial systems, which are solutions to certain functional equations which generalize the second-order differential equations satisfied by the so called classical orthogonal polynomial families of Jacobi, Laguerre, Hermite and Bessel. These functional equations can be chosen to be of different type: fractional differential equations, q-difference equations, etc, which converge to their respective differential equations of the aforesaid classical orthogonal polynomials. In addition to this, there exists a confluence of both the families of polynomials constructed and the functional equations who approach to the classical families of polynomials and second-order differential equations, respectively

Higher-order recurrence relations, Sobolev-type inner products and matrix factorizations

It is well known that Sobolev-type orthogonal polynomials with respect to measures supported on the real line satisfy higher-order recurrence relations and these can be expressed as a (2N+1)-banded symmetric semi-infinite matrix. In this paper we state the connection between these (2N+1)-banded matrices and the Jacobi matrices associated with the three-term recurrence relation satisfied by the standard sequence of orthonormal polynomials with respect to the 2-iterated Christoffel transformation of the measure.

On second order q-difference equations for high-order Sobolev-type q-Hermite orthogonal polynomials

The q-Hermite I-Sobolev type polynomials of higher order are consider for their study. Their hypergeometric representation is provided together with further useful properties such as several structure relations which give rise to a three-term recurrence relation of their elements. Two different q-difference equations satisfied by the q-Hermite I-Sobolev type polynomials of higher order are also established.

On second order q-difference equations satisfied by Al-Salam-Carlitz I-Sobolev type polynomials of higher order

This contribution deals with the sequence $\{\mathbb{U}_{n}^{(a)}(x;q,j)\}_{n\geq 0}$ of monic polynomials, orthogonal with respect to a Sobolev-type inner product related to the Al-Salam--Carlitz I orthogonal polynomials, and involving an arbitrary number of $q$-derivatives on the two boundaries of the corresponding orthogonality interval. We provide several versions of the corresponding connection formulas, ladder operators, and several versions of the second order $q$-difference equations satisfied by polynomials in this sequence. As a novel contribution to the literature, we provide certain three term recurrence formula with rational coefficients satisfied by $\mathbb{U}_{n}^{(a)}(x;q,j)$, which paves the way to establish an appealing generalization of the so-called $J$-fractions to the framework of Sobolev-type orthogonality.

New analytic properties of nonstandard Sobolev-type Charlier orthogonal polynomials

In this contribution we consider the sequence $\{Q_{n}^λ\}_{n\geq 0} $ of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to the following inner product involving differences \begin{equation*} \langle p,q\rangle _λ=\int_{0}^{\infty}p\left(x\right) q\left(x\right) dψ^{(a)}(x)+λ\,Δp(c)Δq(c), \end{equation*} where $λ\in \mathbb{R}_{+}$, $Δ$ denotes the forward difference operator defined by $Δf\left(x\right) =f\left(x+1\right) -f\left(x\right) $, $ψ^{(a)}$ with $a>0$ is the well known Poisson distribution of probability theory% \begin{equation*} dψ^{(a)}(x)=\frac{e^{-a}a^{x}}{x!}\quad \text{at}x=0,1,2,\ldots, \end{equation*}% and $c\in \mathbb{R}$ is such that $ψ^{(a)}$ has no points of increase in the interval $(c,c+1)$. We derive its corresponding hypergeometric representation. The ladder operators and two different versions of the linear difference equation of second order corresponding to these polynomials are given. Recurrence formulas of five and three terms, the latter with rational coefficients, are presented. Moreover, for real values of $c$ such that $c+1<0$, we obtain some results on the distribution of its zeros as decreasing functions of $λ$, when this parameter goes from zero to infinity.

On Freud-Sobolev type orthogonal polynomials

In this contribution we deal with sequences of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to the Freud Sobolev-type inner product \begin{equation*} \left\langle p,q\right\rangle _{s}=\int_{\mathbb{R}}p(x)q(x)e^{-x^{4}}dx+M_{0}p(0)q(0)+M_{1}p^{\prime }(0)q^{\prime }(0), \end{equation*}% where $p,q$ are polynomials, $M_{0}$ and $M_{1}$ are nonnegative real numbers. Connection formulas between these polynomials and Freud polynomials are deduced and, as a consequence, a five term recurrence relation for such polynomials is obtained. The location of their zeros as well as their asymptotic behavior is studied. Finally, an electrostatic interpretation of them in terms of a logarithmic interaction in the presence of an external field is given.

Zeros of orthogonal polynomials generated by the Geronimus perturbation of measures

This paper deals with monic orthogonal polynomial sequences (MOPS in short) generated by a Geronimus canonical spectral transformation of a positive Borel measure $μ$, i.e., \begin{equation*} \frac{1}{(x-c)}dμ(x)+Nδ(x-c), \end{equation*} for some free parameter $N \in \mathbb{R}_{+}$ and shift $c$. We analyze the behavior of the corresponding MOPS. In particular, we obtain such a behavior when the mass $N$ tends to infinity as well as we characterize the precise values of $N$ such the smallest (respectively, the largest) zero of these MOPS is located outside the support of the original measure $μ$. When $μ$ is semi-classical, we obtain the ladder operators and the second order linear differential equation satisfied by the Geronimus perturbed MOPS, and we also give an electrostatic interpretation of the zero distribution in terms of a logarithmic potential interaction under the action of an external field. We analyze such an equilibrium problem when the mass point of the perturbation $c$ is located outside of the support of $μ$.

On polynomials associated with an Uvarov modification of a quartic potential Freud-like weight

In this contribution we consider sequences of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to the standard Freud-like inner product involving a quartic potential $\left\langle p,q\right\rangle_{M}=\int_{\mathbb{R}}p(x)q(x)e^{-x^{4}+2tx^{2}}dx+Mp(0)q(0).$ We analyze some properties of these polynomials, such as the ladder operators and the holonomic equation that they satisfy and, as an application, we give an electrostatic interpretation of their zero distribution in terms of a logarithmic potential interaction under the action of an external field. It is also shown that the coefficients of their three term recurrence relation satisfy a nonlinear difference string equation. Finally, an equation of motion for their zeros in terms of their dependence on $t$ is given.

Asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials generated by a Geronimus perturbation of the Laguerre measure

This paper deals with monic orthogonal polynomials generated by a Geronimus canonical spectral transformation of the Laguerre classical measure: \[ \frac{1}{x-c}x^{α}e^{-x}dx+Nδ(x-c), \] for $x\in[0,\infty)$, $α>-1$, a free parameter $N\in \mathbb{R}_{+}$ and a shift $c<0$. We analyze the asymptotic behavior (both strong and relative to classical Laguerre polynomials) of these orthogonal polynomials as $n$ tends to infinity.

Asymptotics for Laguerre-Sobolev type ortogonal polynomials modified within their oscillatory regime

In this paper we consider sequences of polynomials orthogonal with respect to certain discrete Laguerre-Sobolev inner product, with two perturbations (involving derivatives) located inside the oscillatory region for the classical Laguerre polynomials. We focus our attention on the representation of these polynomials in terms of the classical Laguerre polynomials and deduce the coefficients of their corresponding five-term recurrence relation, as well as the asymptotic behavior of these coefficients when the degree of the polynomials tends to infinity. Also, the outer relative asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials with respect to this discrete Sobolev inner product is analyzed.

New isometry of Krall-Laguerre orthogonal polynomials in martingale spaces

Sets of orthogonal martingales are importants because they can be used as stochastic integrators in a kind of chaotic representation property, see [20]. In this paper, we revisited the problem studied by W. Schoutens in [21], investigating how an inner product derived from an Uvarov transformation of the Laguerre weight function is used in the orthogonalization procedure of a sequence of martingales related to a certain Lévy process, called Teugels Martingales. Since the Uvarov transformation depends by a c<0, we are able to provide infinite sets of strongly orthogonal martingales, each one for every c in (-infty,0). In a similar fashion of [21], we introduce a suitable isometry between the space of polynomials and the space of linear combinations of Teugels martingales as well as the general orthogonalization procedure. Finally, the new construction is applied to the Gamma process.

The symmetrization problem for multiple orthogonal polynomials

We analyze the effect of symmetrization in the theory of multiple orthogonal polynomials. For a symmetric sequence of type II multiple orthogonal polynomials satisfying a high-term recurrence relation, we fully characterize the Weyl function associated to the corresponding block Jacobi matrix as well as the Stieltjes matrix function. Next, from an arbitrary sequence of type II multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to a set of d linear functionals, we obtain a total of d+1 sequences of type II multiple orthogonal polynomials, which can be used to construct a new sequence of symmetric type II multiple orthogonal polynomials. Finally, we prove a Favard-type result for certain sequences of matrix multiple orthogonal polynomials satisfying a matrix four-term recurrence relation with matrix coefficients.
