Tidal-charge effects on the superradiance of rotating black holes

The changes a (negative) tidal charge causes at the phenomenon of superradiance which occurs around rotating black holes are investigated. This is made by computing the amplification factors of massless scalar waves being scattered by the black hole. It is shown that the increase of the tidal charge intensity leads to a considerable enhancement of energy extraction from near-extreme black holes. Such improvement results from the fact that extreme black holes with more negative tidal charges spin faster. Maximum amplification decreases with the increase of the tidal charge intensity if the angular momentum of the black hole per unit mass is fixed. The tidal charge may also change crucially the superradiance phenomenon of massless scalar waves causing maximum amplification to occur for $m > 1$ differently from the case of Kerr black holes.

Electromagnetic absorption, emission and scattering spectra of black holes with tidal charge

The effects of the tidal charge of black holes predicted in the Randall-Sundrum brane-world scenario on the electromagnetic cross sections and emission rate is studied. Although quantitatively different, the cross sections and emission rates of such black holes are similar to the ones of Schwarzschild black holes. The increase of the tidal-charge intensity makes the absorption cross sections increase and the interference-fringe widths of the differential scattering cross sections narrow. The electromagnetic emission rate increases initially with the increase of the tidal-charge intensity, but reaches a maximum. This results from the combination of opposite behaviors of the absorption cross section and the black hole temperature, as this last decreases with the increase of the tidal-charge intensity. It is shown that the cross sections obtained via the partial-wave method agree well with the high-frequency approximations, and can also been simulated by their scalar analogues in certain limits.

Scalar scattering from black holes with tidal charge

The cross sections of black holes with tidal charge predicted in the context of the Randall--Sundrum brane-world scenario are computed considering the massless scalar field. Results obtained for black holes with different tidal-charge intensities are compared in order to study how this charge modifies the black hole cross sections. Such results are also compared with the ones for Schwarzschild and extreme Reissner--Nordström black holes. The increase of the tidal-charge intensity makes the black hole absorb more and can also be measured by the narrowing of interference fringes of the differential scattering cross section. These results indicate that the effects of the tidal charge are very important in phenomena which take place near the black hole, but can be neglected in the far region. Analytical results are obtained in the high-frequency limit and are shown to excellently agree with the numeric results obtained via the partial-wave method. It is shown numerically that black holes with tidal charge obey the universality of the low-frequency absorption cross section of stationary black holes for the massless scalar field.

Scalar scattering from charged black holes on the brane

The differential scattering cross section of the massless scalar field localized on the 3-brane of charged static black holes in the ADD model is analyzed. While results valid in the entire range of scattering angle can be obtained only via a numerical approach, analytical results can be obtained via the geodesic and glory approximations. The comparisons between numerical and analytical results lead to excellent agreements. The increase of the charge intensity has the consequence of increasing the width of the interference fringes in the scattering cross section. Its influence on the intensity of the scattered flux, however, depends on the dimensionality of the spacetime. Analyzes for the special cases of uncharged and extremely charged black holes are included.

Addendum to "Absorption of a massive scalar field by a charged black hole"

In Phys.Rev.D89, 104053 (2014) we studied the absorption cross section of a scalar field of mass $m$ impinging on a static black hole of mass $M$ and charge $Q$. We presented numerical results using the partial-wave method, and analytical results in the high- and low-frequency limit. Our low-frequency approximation was only valid if the (dimensionless) field velocity $v$ exceeds $v_c = 2 πM m$. In this Addendum we give the complementary result for $v \lesssim v_c$, and we consider the possible physical relevance of this regime.

Scattering of massless scalar waves from Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black holes on the brane

The scalar scattering cross section is computed for Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black holes on the brane. The cross sections are computed numerically via the partial-wave method. The phase shifts are found numerically and also via the Born approximation. It is shown that spacetimes with more than six dimensions present a finite scattering cross section in all directions.

Tidal Forces in Reissner-Nordström Spacetimes

We analyze the tidal forces produced in the spacetime of Reissner-Nordström black holes. We point out that the radial component of the tidal force changes sign just outside the event horizon if the charge-to-mass ratio is close to $1$ unlike in Schwarzschild spacetime of uncharged black holes, and that the angular component changes sign between the outer and inner horizons. We solve the geodesic deviation equations for radially falling bodies towards the charged black hole. We find, for example, that the radial component of the geodesic deviation vector starts decreasing inside the event horizon unlike in the Schwarzschild case.

Scattering from charged black holes and supergravity

The scattering cross sections of the unpolarized electromagnetic and gravitational waves are shown to be equal for the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole using $N=2$ supergravity. The conversion cross sections between the unpolarized electromagnetic and gravitational waves are also shown to coincide. The gravitational and electromagnetic scattering cross sections are computed numerically for Reissner-Nordström black holes for several charge-to-mass ratios and the coincidence between the two scattering cross sections for the extremal case is confirmed.

Scattering by regular black holes: Planar massless scalar waves impinging upon a Bardeen black hole

Singularities are common features of general relativity black holes. However, within general relativity, one can construct black holes that present no singularities. These regular black hole solutions can be achieved by, for instance, relaxing one of the energy conditions on the stress energy tensor sourcing the black hole. Some regular black hole solutions were found in the context of non-linear electrodynamics, the Bardeen black hole being the first one proposed. In this paper, we consider a planar massless scalar wave scattered by a Bardeen black hole. We compare the scattering cross section computed using a partial-wave description with the classical geodesic scattering of a stream of null geodesics, as well as with the semi-classical glory approximation. We obtain that, for some values of the corresponding black hole charge, the scattering cross section of a Bardeen black hole has a similar interference pattern of a Reissner-Nordström black hole.

Greybody factors for rotating black holes in higher dimensions

We perform a thorough study of greybody factors for minimally-coupled scalar fields propagating on the background of rotating black holes in higher (odd) dimensions with all angular momenta set equal. For this special case, the solution enjoys an enhanced symmetry, which translates into the advantageous feature of being cohomogeneity-1, i.e., these backgrounds depend on a single radial coordinate. Our analysis contemplates three distinct situations, with the cosmological constant being zero, positive or negative. Using the technique of matched asymptotic expansions we compute analytically the greybody factors in the low-frequency regime, restricting to s-wave scattering. Our formulas generalize those obtained previously in the literature for the static and spherically symmetric case, with corrections arising from the change in the horizon area due to rotation. It is also proven that, for this family of black holes, the horizon area is a decreasing function of the spin parameter, without regard of dimensionality and of cosmological constant. Through an improvement on a calculation specific to the class of small black holes in anti-de Sitter and not restricted to the usual low-frequency regime, we uncover a rich structure of the greybody spectrum, more complex than previously reported but also enjoying a certain degree of universality. We complement our low-frequency analytic results with numerical computations valid over a wide range of frequencies and extend them to higher angular momentum quantum numbers, $\ell>0$. This allows us to probe the superradiant regime that is observed for corotating wavefunctions. We point out that the maximum amplification factor for intermediate-size black holes in anti-de Sitter can be surprisingly large.

Inferring black hole charge from backscattered electromagnetic radiation

We compute the scattering cross section of Reissner-Nordström black holes for the case of an incident electromagnetic wave. We describe how scattering is affected by both the conversion of electromagnetic to gravitational radiation, and the parity-dependence of phase shifts induced by the black hole charge. The latter effect creates a helicity-reversed scattering amplitude that is non-zero in the backward direction. We show that from the character of the electromagnetic wave scattered in the backward direction it is possible, in principle, to infer if a static black hole is charged.

Absorption of a massive scalar field by a charged black hole

We calculate the absorption cross section of a massive neutral scalar field impinging upon a Reissner-Nordström black hole. First, we derive key approximations in the high- and low-frequency regimes. Next, we develop a numerical method to compute the cross section at intermediate frequencies, and present a selection of results. Finally, we draw together our complementary approaches to give a quantitative full-spectrum description of absorption.
