Read--Shockley formula for a general Bravais lattice in two dimensions

In this note we consider a two-dimensional semi-discrete dislocation energy and propose a simple and physically motivated construction for the grain boundary between two crystal grains with a small orientation difference. In the case of a general Bravais lattice, the energy of this construction matches the logarithmic scaling predicted by Read and Shockley.

Stability of the Von Kármán regime for thin plates under Neumann boundary conditions

We analyze the stability of the Von Kármán model for thin plates subject to pure Neumann conditions and to dead loads, with no restriction on their direction. We prove a stability alternative, which extends previous results by Lecumberry and Müller in the Dirichlet case. Because of the rotation invariance of the problem, their notions of stability have to be modified and combined with the concept of optimal rotations due to Maor and Mora. Finally, we prove that the Von Kármán model is not compatible with some specific types of forces. Thus, for such, only the Kirchoff model applies.

Nonlocal anisotropic Riesz interactions with a physical confinement

In this work we fully characterize, in any space dimension, the minimizer of a class of nonlocal and anisotropic Riesz energies defined over probability measures supported on ellipsoids. In the super-Coulombic and Coulombic regime, we prove that the minimizer is independent of the anisotropy. In contrast, in the sub-Coulombic regime we show that this property fails: we exhibit an example of anisotropy for which the isotropic minimizer is not optimal. In order to prove our main result, we provide a formula for the potential inside an ellipsoid, valid in any space dimension and involving the hypergeometric function.

On the hierarchy of plate models for a singularly perturbed multi-well nonlinear elastic energy

In the celebrated work of Friesecke, James and Müller '06 the authors derive a hierarchy of models for plates by carefully analyzing the $Γ$-convergence of the rescaled nonlinear elastic energy. The key ingredient of their proofs is the rigidity estimate proved in an earlier work of theirs. Here we consider the case in which the elastic energy has a multi-well structure: this type of functional arises, for example, in the study of solid-solid phase transitions. Since the rigidity estimate fails in the case of compatible wells, we follow Alicandro, Dal Maso, Lazzaroni and Palombaro '18 and add a regularization term to the energy that penalizes jumps from one well to another, leading to good compactness properties. In this setting we recover the full hierarchy of plate models with an explicit dependence on the wells. Finally, we study the convergence of energy minimizers with suitable external forces and full Neumann boundary conditions. To do so, we adapt the definition of optimal rotations introduced by Maor, Mora '21.

A free boundary approach to the quasistatic evolution of debonding models

The mechanical process of progressively debonding an adhesive membrane from a substrate is described as a quasistatic variational evolution of sets and herein investigated. Existence of energetic solutions, based on global minimisers of a suitable functional together with an energy balance, is obtained within the natural class of open sets, improving and simplifying previous results known in literature. The proposed approach relies on an equivalent reformulation of the model in terms of the celebrated one-phase Bernoulli free boundary problem. This point of view allows performing the Minimizing Movements scheme in spaces of functions instead of the more complicated framework of sets. Nevertheless, in order to encompass irreversibility of the phenomenon, it remains crucial to keep track of the debonded region at each discrete time-step, thus actually resulting in a coupled algorithm.
