Modulation theory for self-focusing in the nonlinear Schrödinger-Helmholtz equation

The nonlinear Schrödinger-Helmholtz (SH) equation in $N$ space dimensions with $2σ$ nonlinear power was proposed as a regularization of the classical nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. It was shown that the SH equation has a larger regime ($1\leσ<\frac{4}{N}$) of global existence and uniqueness of solutions compared to that of the classical NLS ($0<σ<\frac{2}{N}$). In the limiting case where the Schrödinger-Helmholtz equation is viewed as a perturbed system of the classical NLS equation, we apply modulation theory to the classical critical case ($σ=1,\:N=2$) and show that the regularization prevents the formation of singularities of the NLS equation. Our theoretical results are supported by numerical simulations

On the Statistical Properties of the 3D Incompressible Navier-Stokes-Voigt Model

The Navier-Stokes-Voigt (NSV) model of viscoelastic incompressible fluid has been recently proposed as a regularization of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations for the purpose of direct numerical simulations. In this work we investigate its statistical properties by employing phenomenological heuristic arguments, in combination with Sabra shell model simulations of the analogue of the NSV model. For large values of the regularizing parameter, compared to the Kolmogorov length scale, simulations exhibit multiscaling inertial range, and the dissipation range displaying low intermittency. These facts provide evidence that the NSV regularization may reduce the stiffness of direct numerical simulations of turbulent flows, with a small impact on the energy containing scales.

Simulations de l'écoulement turbulent marin avec un modèle de déconvolution

We display a continous equation for the deconvolution process that generalizes the Van Cittert algorithm in the case of oceanic boundary conditions for a given fixed wind. We deduce a LES model for which we have existence and uniqueness of a strong solution. Finally, we display several numerical simulations showing the practical interest of the model.

Global regularity for a Birkhoff-Rott-alpha approximation of the dynamics of vortex sheets of the 2D Euler equations

We present an alpha-regularization of the Birkhoff-Rott equation, induced by the two-dimensional Euler-alpha equations, for the vortex sheet dynamics. We show that initially smooth self-avoiding vortex sheet remains smooth for all times under the alpha-regularized dynamics, provided the initial density of vorticity is an integrable function over the curve with respect to the arc-length measure.

Global Existence and Uniqueness of Weak Solutions of 3-D Euler Equations with Helical Symmetry in the Absence of Vorticity Stretching

We prove uniqueness and existence of the weak solutions of Euler equations with helical symmetry, with initial vorticity in $L^{\infty}$ under "no vorticity stretching" geometric constraint. Our article follows the argument of the seminal work of Yudovich. We adjust the argument to resolve the difficulties which are specific to the helical symmetry.

Spectral scaling of the Leray-$α$ model for two-dimensional turbulence

We present data from high-resolution numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes-$α$ and the Leray-$α$ models for two-dimensional turbulence. It was shown previously (Lunasin et al., J. Turbulence, 8, (2007), 751-778), that for wavenumbers $k$ such that $kα\gg 1$, the energy spectrum of the smoothed velocity field for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes-$α$ (NS-$α$) model scales as $k^{-7}$. This result is in agreement with the scaling deduced by dimensional analysis of the flux of the conserved enstrophy using its characteristic time scale. We therefore hypothesize that the spectral scaling of any $α$-model in the sub-$α$ spatial scales must depend only on the characteristic time scale and dynamics of the dominant cascading quantity in that regime of scales. The data presented here, from simulations of the two-dimensional Leray-$α$ model, confirm our hypothesis. We show that for $kα\gg 1$, the energy spectrum for the two-dimensional Leray-$α$ scales as $k^{-5}$, as expected by the characteristic time scale for the flux of the conserved enstrophy of the Leray-$α$ model. These results lead to our conclusion that the dominant directly cascading quantity of the model equations must determine the scaling of the energy spectrum.

Long-time limit for a class of quadratic infinite-dimensional dynamical systems inspired by models of viscoelastic fluids

We study a class of quadratic, infinite-dimensional dynamical systems, inspired by models for viscoelastic fluids. We prove that these equations define a semi-flow on the cone of positive, essentially bounded functions. As time tends to infinity, the solutions tend to an equilibrium manifold in the $L^2$-norm. Convergence to a particular function on the equilibrium manifold is only proved under additional assumptions. We discuss several possible generalizations.

Gevrey regularity of the global attractor of the 3D Navier-Stokes-Voight equations

Recently, the Navier-Stokes-Voight (NSV) model of viscoelastic incompressible fluid has been proposed as a regularization of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations for the purpose of direct numerical simulations. In this work we prove that the global attractor of the $D NSV equations, driven by an analytic forcing, consists of analytic functions. A consequence of this result is that the spectrum of the solutions of the 3D NSV system, lying on the global attractor, have exponentially decaying tail, despite the fact that the equations behave like a damped hyperbolic system, rather than the parabolic one. This result provides an additional evidence that the 3D NSV with the small regularization parameter enjoys similar statistical properties as the 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Finally, we calculate a lower bound for the exponential decaying scale -- the scale at which the spectrum of the solution start to decay exponentially, and establish a similar bound for the steady state solutions of the 3D NSV and 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Our estimate coincides with similar available lower bound for the smallest dissipation length scale of solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations.

A Beale-Kato-Majda breakdown criterion for an Oldroyd-B fluid in the creeping flow regime

We derive a criterion for the breakdown of solutions to the Oldroyd-B model in $\R^3$ in the limit of zero Reynolds number (creeping flow). If the initial stress field is in the Sobolev space $H^m$, $m> 5/2$, then either a unique solution exists within this space indefinitely, or, at the time where the solution breaks down, the time integral of the $L^\infty$-norm of the stress tensor must diverge. This result is analogous to the celebrated Beale-Kato-Majda breakdown criterion for the inviscid Eluer equations of incompressible fluids.

Nonlinear Schrodinger-Helmholtz Equation as Numerical Regularization of the Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation

A regularized $α-$system of the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLS) with $2σ$ nonlinear power in dimension $N$ is studied. We prove existence and uniqueness of local solution in the case $1 \le σ<\frac{4}{N-2}$ and existence and uniqueness of global solution in the case $1 \le σ< \frac{4}{N}$. When $α\to 0^+$, this regularized system will converge to the classical NLS in the appropriate range. In particular, the purpose of this numerical regularization is to shed light on the profile of the blow up solutions of the original Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation in the range $\frac{2}{N}\le σ<\frac{4}{N}$, and in particular for the critical case $σ= \frac{2}{N}$.

Global Attractors and Determining Modes for the 3D Navier-Stokes-Voight Equations

We investigate the long-term dynamics of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Voight model of viscoelastic incompressible fluid. Specifically, we derive upper bounds for the number of determining modes for the 3D Navier-Stokes-Voight equations and for the dimension of a global attractor of a semigroup generated by these equations. Viewed from the numerical analysis point of view we consider the Navier-Stokes-Voight model as a non-viscous (inviscid) regularization of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. Furthermore, we also show that the weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Voight equations converge, in the appropriate norm, to the weak solutions of the inviscid simplified Bardina model, as the viscosity coefficient $ν\to 0$.

An Inviscid Regularization for the Surface Quasi-Geostrophic Equation

Inspired by recent developments in Berdina-like models for turbulence, we propose an inviscid regularization for the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equations. We are particularly interested in the celebrated question of blowup in finite time of the solution gradient of the SQG equations. The new regularization yields a necessary and sufficient condition, satisfied by the regularized solution, when a regularization parameter $α$ tends to zero, for the solution of the original SQG equations to develop a singularity in finite time. As opposed to the commonly used viscous regularization, the inviscid equations derived here conserve a modified energy. Therefore, the new regularization provides an attractive numerical procedure for finite time blow up testing. In particular, we prove that, if the initial condition is smooth, then the regularized solution remains as smooth as the initial data for all times. Moreover, much like the original problem, the inviscid regularization admits a maximum principle.

Statistical Properties of Nonlinear Shell Models of Turbulence from Linear Advection Models: Rigorous Results

In a recent paper it was proposed that for some nonlinear shell models of turbulence one can construct a linear advection model for an auxiliary field such that the scaling exponents of all the structure functions of the linear and nonlinear fields coincide. The argument depended on an assumption of continuity of the solutions as a function of a parameter. The aim of this paper is to provide a rigorous proof for the validity of the assumption. In addition we clarify here when the swap of a nonlinear model by a linear one will not work.

Analytical Study of Certain Magnetohydrodynamic-alpha Models

In this paper we present an analytical study of a subgrid scale turbulence model of the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations, inspired by the Navier-Stokes-alpha (also known as the viscous Camassa-Holm equations or the Lagrangian-averaged Navier-Stokes-alpha model). Specifically, we show the global well-posedness and regularity of solutions of a certain MHD-alpha model (which is a particular case of the Lagrangian averaged magnetohydrodynamic-alpha model without enhancing the dissipation for the magnetic field). We also introduce other subgrid scale turbulence models, inspired by the Leray-alpha and the modified Leray-alpha models of turbulence. Finally, we discuss the relation of the MHD-alpha model to the MHD equations by proving a convergence theorem, that is, as the length scale alpha tends to zero, a subsequence of solutions of the MHD-alpha equations converges to a certain solution (a Leray-Hopf solution) of the three-dimensional MHD equations.

Sharp Lower Bounds for the Dimension of the Global Attractor of the Sabra Shell Model of Turbulence

In this work we derive a lower bounds for the Hausdorff and fractal dimensions of the global attractor of the Sabra shell model of turbulence in different regimes of parameters. We show that for a particular choice of the forcing and for sufficiently small viscosity term $ν$, the Sabra shell model has a global attractor of large Hausdorff and fractal dimensions proportional to $\log_λν^{-1}$ for all values of the governing parameter $ε$, except for $ε=1$. The obtained lower bounds are sharp, matching the upper bounds for the dimension of the global attractor obtained in our previous work. Moreover, we show different scenarios of the transition to chaos for different parameters regime and for specific forcing. In the ``three-dimensional'' regime of parameters this scenario changes when the parameter $ε$ becomes sufficiently close to 0 or to 1. We also show that in the ``two-dimensional'' regime of parameters for a certain non-zero forcing term the long-time dynamics of the model becomes trivial for any value of the viscosity.
