Low Complexity Kolmogorov-Arnold Network-based DPD for Analog RoF Fronthaul

This paper proposes and demonstrates experimentally for the first time a Kolmogorov-Arnold Network (KAN)-based digital predistortion (DPD) model, named envelope time-delay KAN (ETDKAN), for mitigating nonlinear distortions in analog radio-over-fiber (A-RoF) systems. The ETDKAN model incorporates physical constraints of radio-frequency (RF) nonlinear devices and, through KAN symbolization, achieves a significant reduction in computational complexity while improving interpretability. The proposed model is numerically implemented and optimized alongside multilayer perceptron (MLP) and memory-polynomial-based DPDs. Results show that the resulting symbolic ETDKAN (symbETDKAN) attains ACLR and EVM performance comparable to neural network-based models, while maintaining a computational complexity close to that of memory polynomials. Experimental validation using an A-RoF system confirms the practical feasibility of the proposed approach, which resulted in a 4-5 dB reduction in ACLR in the analyzed scenario.

Assessing the Time Evolution of COVID-19 Effective Reproduction Number in Brazil

In this paper, we use a Bayesian method to estimate the effective reproduction number (R(t)), in the context of monitoring the time evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil at different geographic levels. The focus of this study is to investigate the similarities between the trends in the evolution of such indicators at different subnational levels with the trends observed nationally. The underlying question addressed is whether national surveillance of such variables is enough to provide a picture of the epidemic evolution in the country or if it may hide important localized trends. This is particularly relevant in the scenario where health authorities use information obtained from such indicators in the design of non-pharmaceutical intervention policies to control the epidemic. A comparison between R(t) estimates and the moving average (MA) of daily reported infections is also presented, which is another commonly monitored variable. The analysis carried out in this paper is based on the data of confirmed infected cases provided by a public repository. The correlations between the time series of R(t) and MA in different geographic levels are assessed. Comparing national with subnational trends, higher degrees of correlation are found for the time series of R(t) estimates, compared to the MA time series. Nevertheless, differences between national and subnational trends are observed for both indicators, suggesting that local epidemiological surveillance would be more suitable as an input to the design of non-pharmaceutical intervention policies in Brazil, particularly for the least populated states.

Adaptive Turbo Equalization of Probabilistically Shaped Constellations

Fiber nonlinearity compensation of probabilistically shaped constellations with adaptive turbo equalization is investigated for the first time. Potential for more than 100% transmission reach extension is demonstrated by combining probabilistic shaping, single-channel digital backpropagation, and adaptive turbo equalization.

Adaptive Turbo Equalization for Nonlinearity Compensation in WDM Systems

In this paper, the performance of adaptive turbo equalization for nonlinearity compensation (NLC) is investigated. A turbo equalization scheme is proposed where a recursive least-squares (RLS) algorithm is used as an adaptive channel estimator to track the time-varying intersymbol interference (ISI) coefficients associated with inter-channel nonlinear interference (NLI) model. The estimated channel coefficients are used by a MIMO 2x2 soft-input soft-output (SISO) linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) equalizer to compensate for the time-varying ISI. The SISO LMMSE equalizer and the SISO forward error correction (FEC) decoder exchange extrinsic information in every turbo iteration, allowing the receiver to improve the performance of the channel estimation and the equalization, achieving lower bit-error-rate (BER) values. The proposed scheme is investigated for polarization multiplexed 64QAM and 256QAM, although it applies to any proper modulation format. Extensive numerical results are presented. It is shown that the scheme allows up to 0.7 dB extra gain in effectively received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and up to 0.2 bits/symbol/pol in generalized mutual information (GMI), on top of the gain provided by single-channel digital backpropagation.

Optical wavelength conversion of high bandwidth phase-encoded signals in a high FOM 50cm CMOS compatible waveguide

We demonstrate wavelength conversion of QAM signals including 32GBd QPSK and 10GBd 16QAM in a 50cm long high index doped glass spiral waveguide. The quality of the generated idlers over a 10nm bandwidth is sufficient to achieve a BER performance below the HD FEC threshold (less than 3.8 x 10-3), with an OSNR penalty of less than 0.3 dB compared to the original signal. Our results confirm that this is a promising platform for nonlinear optical signal processing, a result of both very low linear propagation loss (less than 0.07 dB/cm) and the large material bandgap that ensures negligible nonlinear loss at telecom wavelengths.

Dual polarization nonlinear Fourier transform-based optical communication system

New services and applications are causing an exponential increase in internet traffic. In a few years, current fiber optic communication system infrastructure will not be able to meet this demand because fiber nonlinearity dramatically limits the information transmission rate. Eigenvalue communication could potentially overcome these limitations. It relies on a mathematical technique called "nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT)" to exploit the "hidden" linearity of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation as the master model for signal propagation in an optical fiber. We present here the theoretical tools describing the NFT for the Manakov system and report on experimental transmission results for dual polarization in fiber optic eigenvalue communications. A transmission of up to 373.5 km with bit error rate less than the hard-decision forward error correction threshold has been achieved. Our results demonstrate that dual-polarization NFT can work in practice and enable an increased spectral efficiency in NFT-based communication systems, which are currently based on single polarization channels.
