Connection of hypocoercivity and hypocontractivity via the Cayley transform

The concepts of hypocoercivity and hypocontractivity and their relationship are studied for semi-dissipative continuous-time and discrete-time evolution equations in a Hilbert space setting. New proofs for the characterization of the short-time decay of the solution from the initial value are presented, that in particular characterize the constants in the leading terms of the solution when expanded in time. Maximally coercive/contractive representations of hypocoercive and hypocontractive semi-dissipative systems are presented, as well as the effect of different representations on the error estimates for the numerical solution.

Hypocoercivity in Hilbert spaces

The concept of hypocoercivity for linear evolution equations with dissipation is discussed and equivalent characterizations that were developed for the finite-dimensional case are extended to separable Hilbert spaces. Using the concept of a hypocoercivity index, quantitative estimates on the short-time and long-time decay behavior of a hypocoercive system are derived. As a useful tool for analyzing the structural properties, an infinite-dimensional staircase form is also derived and connections to linear systems and control theory are presented. Several examples illustrate the new concepts and the results are applied to the Lorentz kinetic equation.

Sequence space representations for spaces of smooth functions and distributions via Wilson bases

We provide explicit sequence space representations for the test function and distribution spaces occurring in the Valdivia-Vogt structure tables by making use of Wilson bases generated by compactly supported smooth windows. Furthermore, we show that these kind of bases are common unconditional Schauder bases for all separable spaces occurring in these tables. Our work implies that the Valdivia-Vogt structure tables for test functions and distributions may be interpreted as one large commutative diagram.

Projective descriptions of spaces of functions and distributions

We present projective descriptions of classical spaces of functions and distributions. More precisely, we provide descriptions of these spaces by semi-norms which are defined by a combination of classical norms and multiplication or convolution with certain functions. These seminorms are simpler than the ones given by a supremum over bounded or compact sets.

Spacetimes with distributional semi-Riemannian metrics and their curvature

We develop a comprehensive geometric framework for defining spaces $\mathcal{G}(M,E)$ of nonlinear generalized sections of vector bundles $E \to M$ containing spaces of distributional sections $\mathcal{D}'(M, E)$. Our theory incorporates classical differential geometric operations (like tensor products, covariant derivatives and Lie derivatives), is localizable and fully compatible with smooth and distributional tensor calculus. As an application to the treatment of singular metrics, we calculate the curvature of the conical metric used to describe cosmic strings.

Nonlinear generalised functions on manifolds

This paper lays the foundations for a nonlinear theory of differential geometry that is developed in a subsequent paper which is based on Colombeau algebras of tensor distributions on manifolds. We adopt a new approach and construct a global theory of algebras of generalised functions on manifolds based on the concept of smoothing operators. This produces a generalisation of previous theories in a form which is suitable for applications to differential geometry. The generalised Lie derivative is introduced and shown to commute with the embedding of distributions. It is also shown that the covariant derivative of a generalised scalar field commutes with this embedding at the level of association.

A nonlinear theory of distributional geometry

This paper builds on the theory of generalised functions begun in [1]. The Colombeau theory of generalised scalar fields on manifolds is extended to a nonlinear theory of generalised tensor fields which is diffeomorphism invariant and has the sheaf property. The generalised Lie derivative for generalised tensor fields is introduced and it is shown that this commutes with the embedding of distributional tensor fields. It is also shown that the covariant derivative of generalised tensor fields commutes with the embedding at the level of association. The concept of generalised metric is introduced and used to develop a nonsmooth theory of differential geometry. It is shown that the embedding of a continuous metric results in a generalised metric with well defined connection and curvature. It is also shown that a twice continuously differentiable metric which is a solution of the vacuum Einstein equations may be embedded into the algebra of generalised tensor fields and has generalised Ricci curvature associated to zero. Thus, the embedding preserves the Einstein equations at the level of association. Finally, we consider an example of a metric which lies outside the Geroch-Traschen class and show that in our diffeomorphism invariant theory the curvature of a cone is associated to a delta function.

On the space of Laplace transformable distributions

We show that the space $\mathcal{S}'(Γ)$ of Laplace transformable distributions, where $Γ\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ is a non-empty convex open set, is an ultrabornological (PLS)-space. Moreover, we determine an explicit topological predual of $\mathcal{S}'(Γ)$.

A simpler description of the $κ$-topologies on the spaces $\mathscr{D}_{L^p}$, $L^p$, $\mathscr{M}^1$

The $κ$-topologies on the spaces $\mathscr{D}_{L^p}$, $L^p$ and $\mathscr{M}^1$ are defined by a neighbourhood basis consisting of polars of absolutely convex and compact subsets of their (pre-)dual spaces. In many cases it is more convenient to work with a description of the topology by means of a family of semi-norms defined by multiplication and/or convolution with functions and by classical norms. We give such families of semi-norms generating the $κ$-topologies on the above spaces of functions and measures defined by integrability properties. In addition, we present a sequence-space representation of the spaces $\mathscr{D}_{L^p}$ equipped with the $κ$-topology, which complements a result of J.~Bonet and M.~Maestre. As a byproduct, we give a characterisation of the compact subsets of the spaces $\mathscr{D}'_{L^p}$, $L^p$ and $\mathscr{M}^1$.

On association in Colombeau algebras without asymptotics

A recent variant of Colombeau algebras does not employ asymptotic estimates for its definition. We discuss how the concept of association with distributions transfers to this setting and why it still needs to be based on asymptotics.

Sheaves of nonlinear generalized function spaces

We provide a framework for the construction of diffeomorphism invariant sheaves of nonlinear generalized functions spaces. As an application, global algebras of generalized functions for distributions on manifolds and diffeomorphism invariant algebras of generalized functions for ultradistributions are constructed.

Colombeau algebras without asymptotics

We present a construction of algebras of generalized functions of Colombeau-type which, instead of asymptotic estimates with respect to a regularization parameter, employs only topological estimates on certain spaces of kernels for its definition.

Full and special Colombeau algebras

We introduce full diffeomorphism-invariant Colombeau algebras with added $\varepsilone$-dependence in the basic space. This unites the full and special settings of the theory into one single framework. Using locality conditions we find the appropriate definition of point values in full Colombeau algebras and show that special generalized points suffice to characterize elements of full Colombeau algebras. Moreover, we specify sufficient conditions for the sheaf property to hold and give a definition of the sharp topology in this framework.
