Volumes of odd strata of quadratic differentials

We express the Masur--Veech volumes of "completed" strata of quadratic differentials with only odd singularities as a sum over stable graphs. This formula generalizes the formula of Delecroix-Goujard-Zograf-Zorich for principal strata. The coefficients of the formula are in our case intersection numbers of psi classes with the Witten-Kontsevich combinatorial classes; they naturally appear in the count of metric ribbon graphs with prescribed odd valencies. The "completed" strata that we consider are unions of odd strata and some adjacent strata, that contribute to the Masur--Veech volume with explicit weights. We present several conjectures on the large genus asymptotics of these Masur--Veech volumes that could be tackled with this formula.

Bandits for Sponsored Search Auctions under Unknown Valuation Model: Case Study in E-Commerce Advertising

This paper presents a bidding system for sponsored search auctions under an unknown valuation model. This formulation assumes that the bidder's value is unknown, evolving arbitrarily, and observed only upon winning an auction. Unlike previous studies, we do not impose any assumptions on the nature of feedback and consider the problem of bidding in sponsored search auctions in its full generality. Our system is based on a bandit framework that is resilient to the black-box auction structure and delayed and batched feedback. To validate our proposed solution, we conducted a case study at Zalando, a leading fashion e-commerce company. We outline the development process and describe the promising outcomes of our bandits-based approach to increase profitability in sponsored search auctions. We discuss in detail the technical challenges that were overcome during the implementation, shedding light on the mechanisms that led to increased profitability.

Eigenforms of hyperelliptic curves with many automorphisms

Given a pair of translation surfaces it is very difficult to determine whether they are supported on the same algebraic curve. In fact, there are very few examples of such pairs. In this note we present infinitely many examples of finite collections of translation surfaces supported on the same algebraic curve. The underlying curves are hyperelliptic curves with many automorphisms. For each curve, the automorphism of maximal order acts on the space of holomorphic 1-forms. We present a translation surface corresponding to each of the eigenforms of this action.

Teichmüller curves in genus two: Square-tiled surfaces and modular curves

This work is a contribution to the classification of Teichmüller curves in the moduli space $\M_2$ of Riemann surfaces of genus 2. While the classification of primitive Teichmüller curves in $\M_2$ is complete, the classification of the imprimitive curves, which is related to branched torus covers and square-tiled surfaces, remains open. Conjecturally, the classification is completed as follows. Let $W_{d^2}[n] \subset \M_2$ be the 1-dimensional subvariety consisting of those $X \in \M_2$ that admit a primitive degree $d$ holomorphic map $π: X \to E$ to an elliptic curve $E$, branched over torsion points of order $n$. It is known that every imprimitive Teichmüller curve in $\M_2$ is a component of some $W_{d^2}[n]$. The {\em parity conjecture} states that (with minor exceptions) $W_{d^2}[n]$ has two components when $n$ is odd, and one when $n$ is even. In particular, the number of components of $W_{d^2}[n]$ does not depend on $d$. In this work we establish the parity conjecture in the following three cases: (1) for all $n$ when $d=2,3,4,5$; (2) when $d$ and $n$ are prime and $n > (d^3-d)/4$; and (3) when $d$ is prime and $n > C_d$, where $C_d$ is an implicit constant that depends on $d$. In the course of the proof we will see that the modular curve $X(d) = \overline{\Hyp \big/ Γ(d)}$ is itself a square-tiled surface equipped with a natural action of $\SLZ$. The parity conjecture is equivalent to the classification of the finite orbits of this action. It is also closely related to the following {\em illumination conjecture}: light sources at the cusps of the modular curve illuminate all of $X(d)$, except possibly some vertices of the square-tiling. Our results show that the illumination conjecture is true for $d \le 5$.

Ramification divisors of general projections

We study the ramification divisors of projections of a smooth projective variety onto a linear subspace of the same dimension. We prove that the ramification divisors vary in a maximal dimensional family for a large class of varieties. Going further, we study the map that associates to a linear projection its ramification divisor. We show that this map is dominant for most (but not all!) varieties of minimal degree, using (linked) limit linear series of higher rank. We find the degree of this map in some cases, extending the classical appearance of Catalan numbers in the geometry of rational normal curves, and give a geometric explanation of its fibers in terms of torsion points of naturally occurring elliptic curves in the case of the Veronese surface and the quartic rational surface scroll.

Affine surfaces and their Veech groups

We introduce a class of objects which we call 'affine surfaces'. These provide families of foliations on surfaces whose dynamics we are interested in. We present and analyze a couple of examples, and we define concepts related to these in order to motivate several questions and open problems. In particular we generalise the notion of Veech group to affine surfaces, and we prove a structure result about these Veech groups.
