Quantum solver for single-impurity Anderson models with particle-hole symmetry

Quantum embedding methods, such as dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), provide a powerful framework for investigating strongly correlated materials. A central computational bottleneck in DMFT is in solving the Anderson impurity model (AIM), whose exact solution is classically intractable for large bath sizes. In this work, we develop and benchmark a quantum-classical hybrid solver tailored for DMFT applications, using the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) to prepare the ground state of the AIM with shallow quantum circuits. The solver uses a unified ansatz framework to prepare the particle and hole excitations of the ground-state from parameter-shifted circuits, enabling the reconstruction of the impurity Green's function through a continued-fraction expansion. We evaluate the performance of this approach across a few bath sizes and interaction strengths under noisy, shot-limited conditions. We compare three optimization routines (COBYLA, Adam, and L-BFGS-B) in terms of convergence and fidelity, assess the benefits of estimating a quantum-computed moment (QCM) correction to the variational energies, and benchmark the approach by comparing the reconstructed density of states (DOS) against that obtained using a classical pipeline. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of Green's function reconstruction on near-term devices and establish practical benchmarks for quantum impurity solvers embedded within self-consistent DMFT loops.

Solving the Hele-Shaw flow using the Harrow-Hassidim-Lloyd algorithm on superconducting devices: A study of efficiency and challenges

The development of quantum processors capable of handling practical fluid flow problems represents a distant yet promising frontier. Recent strides in quantum algorithms, particularly linear solvers, have illuminated the path toward quantum solutions for classical fluid flow solvers. However, assessing the capability of these quantum linear systems algorithms (QLSAs) in solving ideal flow equations on real hardware is crucial for their future development in practical fluid flow applications. In this study, we examine the capability of a canonical QLSA, the Harrow-Hassidim-Lloyd (HHL) algorithm, in accurately solving the system of linear equations governing an idealized fluid flow problem, specifically the Hele-Shaw flow. Our investigation focuses on analyzing the accuracy and computational cost of the HHL solver. To gauge the stability and convergence of the solver, we conduct shots-based simulations on quantum simulators. Furthermore, we share insights gained from executing the HHL solver on superconducting quantum devices. To mitigate errors arising from qubit measurement, gate operations, and qubit decoherence inherent in quantum devices, we employ various error suppression and mitigation techniques. Our preliminary assessments serve as a foundational step towards enabling more complex quantum utility scale evaluation of using QLSA for solving fluid flow problems.

Neutrinoless double-beta decay from an effective field theory for heavy nuclei

We study neutrinoless double-beta decay in an effective field theory (EFT) for heavy nuclei, which are treated as a spherical core coupled to additional neutrons and/or protons. Since the low-energy constants of the EFT cannot be fitted to data for this unobserved decay, we follow an alternative strategy to constrain these through a correlation with double Gamow-Teller transitions. This correlation was recently found to hold for shell-model calculations, energy-density functionals, and other nuclear structure models. We therefore first calculate the nuclear matrix elements for double Gamow-Teller transitions in the EFT for heavy nuclei. The combination of the EFT uncertainty with the correlation uncertainty enables predictions of nuclear matrix elements for neutrinoless double-beta decay for a broad range of isotopes with quantified uncertainties. Generally the EFT predicts smaller nuclear matrix elements compared to other approaches, but our EFT results are consistent with recent ab initio calculations.

Gamow-Teller and double-beta decays of heavy nuclei within an effective theory

We study $β$ decays within an effective theory that treats nuclei as a spherical collective core with an even number of neutrons and protons that can couple to an additional neutron and/or proton. First we explore Gamow-Teller $β$ decays of parent odd-odd nuclei into low-lying ground-, one-, and two-phonon states of the daughter even-even system. The low-energy constants of the effective theory are adjusted to data on $β$ decays to ground states or Gamow-Teller strengths. The corresponding theoretical uncertainty is estimated based on the power counting of the effective theory. For a variety of medium-mass and heavy isotopes the theoretical matrix elements are in good agreement with experiment within the theoretical uncertainties. We then study the two-neutrino double-$β$ decay into ground and excited states. The results are remarkably consistent with experiment within theoretical uncertainties, without the necessity to adjust any low-energy constants.
