Scaling of entanglement in $2+1$-dimensional scale-invariant field theories

We study the universal scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy of critical theories in $2+1$ dimensions. We specially consider two fermionic scale-invariant models, free massless Dirac fermions and a model of fermions with quadratic band touching, and numerically study the two-cylinder entanglement entropy of the models on the torus. We find that in both cases the entanglement entropy satisfies the area law and has the subleading term which is a scaling function of the aspect ratios of the cylindrical regions. We test the scaling of entanglement in both the free fermion models using three possible scaling functions for the subleading term derived from a) the quasi-one-dimensional conformal field theory, b) the bosonic quantum Lifshitz model, and c) the holographic AdS/CFT correspondence. For the later case we construct an analytic scaling function using holography, appropriate for critical theories with a gravitational dual description. We find that the subleading term in the fermionic models is well described, for a range of aspect ratios, by the scaling form derived from the quantum Lifshitz model as well as that derived using the AdS/CFT correspondence (in this case only for the Dirac model). For the case where the fermionic models are placed on a square torus we find the fit to the different scaling forms is in agreement to surprisingly high precision.

Topological Pair-Density-Wave Superconducting States

We show that the pair-density-wave (PDW) superconducting state emergent in extended Heisenberg-Hubbard models in two-leg ladders is topological in the presence of an Ising spin symmetry and supports a Majorana zero mode (MZM) at an open boundary and at a junction with a uniform $d$-wave one-dimensional superconductor. Similarly to a conventional finite-momentum paired state, the order parameter of the PDW state is a charge-$2e$ field with finite momentum. However, the order parameter here is a {\it quartic} electron operator and conventional mean-field theory cannot be applied to study this state. We use bosonization to show that the 1D PDW state has a MZM at a boundary. This superconducting state is an exotic topological phase supporting Majorana fermions with finite-momentum pairing fields and charge-$4e$ superconductivity.

Theory of Nematic Fractional Quantum Hall State

We derive an effective field theory for the isotropic-nematic quantum phase transition of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states. We demonstrate that for a system with an isotropic background the low-energy effective theory of the nematic order parameter has $z=2$ dynamical scaling exponent, due to a Berry phase term of the order parameter, which is related to the non-dissipative Hall viscosity. Employing the composite fermion theory with a quadrupolar interaction between electrons, we show that a sufficiently attractive quadrupolar interaction triggers a phase transition from the isotropic FQH fluid into a nematic fractional quantum Hall phase. By investigating the spectrum of collective excitations, we demonstrate that the mass gap of Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman (GMP) mode collapses at the isotropic-nematic quantum phase transition. On the other hand, Laughlin quasiparticles and the Kohn collective mode remain gapped at this quantum phase transition, and Kohn's theorem is satisfied. The leading couplings between the nematic order parameter and the gauge fields include a term of the same form as Wen-Zee term. A disclination of the nematic order parameter carries an unquantized electric charge. We also discuss the relation between nematic degrees of freedom and the geometrical response of the fractional quantum Hall fluid.

Chern-Simons theory of the magnetization plateaus of the spin-1/2 quantum XXZ Heisenberg model on Kagome Lattice

Frustrated spin systems on Kagome lattices have long been considered to be a promising candidate for realizing exotic spin liquid phases. Recently, there has been a lot of renewed interest in these systems with the discovery of materials such as Volborthite and Herbertsmithite that have Kagome like structures. In the presence of an external magnetic field, these frustrated systems can give rise to magnetization plateaus of which the plateau at $m=\frac{1}{3}$ is considered to be the most prominent. Here we study the problem of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 quantum XXZ Heisenberg model on a Kagome lattice by using a Jordan-Wigner transformation that maps the spins onto a problem of fermions coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field. This mapping relies on being able to define a consistent Chern-Simons term on the lattice. Using a recently developed method to rigorously extend the Chern-Simons term to the frustrated Kagome lattice we can now formalize the Jordan-Wigner transformation on the Kagome lattice. We then discuss the possible phases that can arise at the mean-field level from this mapping and focus specifically on the case of $\frac{1}{3}$-filling ($m=\frac{1}{3}$ plateau) and analyze the effects of fluctuations in our theory. We show that in the regime of $XY$ anisotropy the ground state at the $1/3$ plateau is equivalent to a bosonic fractional quantum Hall Laughlin state with filling fraction $1/2$ and that at the $5/9$ plateau it is equivalent to the first bosonic Jain daughter state at filling fraction $2/3$.

Geometry of Fractional Quantum Hall Fluids

We use the field theory description of the fractional quantum Hall states to derive the universal response of these topological fluids to shear deformations and curvature of their background geometry, i.e. the Hall viscosity, the Wen-Zee term, and the gravitational Chern-Simons term. To account for the coupling to the background geometry, we show that the concept of flux attachment needs to be modified and use it to derive the geometric responses from Chern-Simons theories. We show that the resulting composite particles minimally couple to the spin connection of the geometry. We derive a consistent theory of geometric responses from the Chern-Simons effective field theories and from parton constructions, and apply it to both abelian and non-abelian states.

Pair-Density-Wave Superconducting States and Electronic Liquid Crystal Phases

In conventional superconductors the Cooper pairs have a zero center of mass momentum. In this paper we present a theory of superconducting states where the Cooper pairs have a nonzero center of mass momentum, inhomogeneous superconducting states known as a pair-density-waves (PDW) states. We show that in a system of spin-1/2 fermions in 2 dimensions in an electronic nematic spin triplet phase where rotational symmetry is broken both in real and in spin space PDW phases arise naturally in a theory that can be analyzed using controlled approximations. We show that several superfluid phases that may arise in this phase can be treated within a controlled BCS mean field theory, with the strength of the spin-triplet nematic order parameter playing the role of the small parameter of this theory. We find that in a spin-triplet nematic phase, in addition of a triplet $p$-wave and spin-singlet $d$-wave (or $s$ depending on the nematic phase) uniform superconducting states, it is also possible to have a $d$-wave (or $s$) PDW superconductor. The PDW phases found here can be either unidirectional, bidirectional or tridirectional depending on the spin-triplet nematic phase and which superconducting channel is dominant. In addition, a triple-helix state is found in a particular channel. We show that these PDW phases are present in the weak coupling limit, in contrast to the usual Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phases which require strong coupling physics in addition to a large magnetic field (and often both).

Ising nematic fluid phase of hard-core dimers on the square lattice

We present a model of classical hard-core dimers on the square lattice that contains an Ising nematic phase in its phase diagram. We consider a model with an attractive interaction for parallel dimers on a given plaquette of the square lattice and an attractive interaction for neighboring parallel dimers on the same row ({\it viz} column) of the lattice. By extensive Monte carlo simulations we find that with a finite density of holes the phase diagram has, with rising temperatures, a columnar crystalline phase, an Ising nematic liquid phase and a disordered fluid phase, separated by Ising continuous phase transitions. We present strong evidence for the Ising universality class of both transitions. The Ising nematic phase can be interpreted as either an intermediate classical thermodynamic phase (possibly of a strongly correlated antiferromagnet) or as a phase of a 2D quantum dimer model using the Rokhsar-Kivelson construction of exactly solvable quantum Hamiltonians.

Bosonization of fermions coupled to topologically massive gravity

We establish a duality between massive fermions coupled to topologically massive gravity (TGM) in $d=3$ space-time dimensions and a purely gravity theory which also will turn out to be a TGM theory but with different parameters: the original graviton mass in the TGM theory coupled to fermions picks-up a contribution from fermion bosonization. We obtain explicit bosonization rules for the fermionic currents and for the energy-momentum-tensor showing that the identifications do not depend explicitly on the parameters of the theory. These results are the gravitational analog of the results for $2+1$ Abelian and non-Abelian bosonization in flat space-time.

Field Theory of Nematicity in the Spontaneous Quantum Anomalous Hall effect

We derive from a microscopic model the effective theory of nematic order in a system with a spontaneous quantum anomalous Hall effect in two dimensions. Starting with a model of two-component fermions (a spinor field) with a quadratic band crossing and short range four-fermion marginally relevant interactions we use a 1/N expansion and bosonization methods to derive the effective field theory for the hydrodynamic modes associated with the conserved currents and with the local fluctuations of the nematic order parameter. We focus on the vicinity of the quantum phase transition from the isotropic Mott Chern insulating phase to a phase in which time-reversal symmetry breaking coexists with nematic order, the nematic Chern insulator. The topological sector of the effective field theory is a BF/Chern-Simons gauge theory. We show that the nematic order parameter field couples with the Maxwell-type terms of the gauge fields as the space components of a locally fluctuating metric tensor. The nematic field has $z=2$ dynamic scaling exponent. The low energy dynamics of the nematic order parameter is found to be governed by a Berry phase term. By means of a detailed analysis of the coupling of the spinor field of the fermions to the changes of their local frames originating from long-wavelength lattice deformations we calculate the Hall viscosity of this system and show that in this system is not the same as the Berry phase term in the effective action of the nematic field, but both are related to the concept of torque Hall viscosity which we introduce here.

Quantum Entanglement and Thermal Reduced Density Matrices in Fermion and Spin Systems on Ladders

Numerical studies of the reduced density matrix of a gapped spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-leg ladder find that it has the same form as the Gibbs density matrix of a gapless spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain at a finite temperature determined by the spin gap of the ladder. We investigate this interesting result by considering a model of free fermions on a two-leg ladder (gapped by the inter-chain tunneling operator) and in spin systems on a ladder with a gapped ground state using exact solutions and several controlled approximations. We calculate the reduced density matrix and the entanglement entropy for a leg of the ladder (i.e. cut made between the chains). In the fermionic system we find the exact form of the reduced density matrix for one of the chains and determine the entanglement spectrum explicitly. Here we find that in the weak tunneling limit of the ladder the entanglement entropy of one chain of the gapped ladder has a simple and universal form dictated by conformal invariance. In the case of the spin system, we consider the strong coupling limit by using perturbation theory and get the reduced density matrix by the Schmidt decomposition. The entanglement entropies of a general gapped system of two coupled conformal field theories (in 1+1 dimensions) is discussed using the replica trick and scaling arguments. We show that 1) for a system with a bulk gap the reduced density matrix has the form of a thermal density matrix, 2) the long-wavelength modes of one subsystem (a chain) of a gapped coupled system are always thermal, 3) the von Neumann entropy equals to the thermodynamic entropy of one chain, and 4) the bulk gap plays the role of effective temperature.

Inhomogeneous superconducting phases in the frustrated Kondo-Heisenberg chain

We use bosonization and renormalization group methods to determine the ground state phase diagram of a one-dimensional frustrated Kondo-Heisenberg system consisting of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Luttinger liquid coupled by a Kondo exchange interaction $J_K$ to a frustrated quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain, with a nearest-neighbor exchange coupling $J_1$ and a next-nearest-neighbor (frustrating) exchange interaction $J_2$. We analyze the interplay of quantum frustration in the antiferromagnetic chain with the Kondo exchange coupling $J_K$ with the Luttinger liquid. We discuss the structure of the phase diagram of this system as a function of the ratios $J_K/J_1$, $J_2/J_1$ and of the parameters of the Luttinger liquid. In particular we discuss in detail the regimes in which a pair-density-wave state may be realized and its relation with the spin correlations in the frustrated antiferromagnetic chain.

Dynamical stability of the quantum Lifshitz theory in 2+1 Dimensions

The role of magnetic and electric perturbations to the quantum Lifshitz model in 2+1 dimensions are examined in this paper. The quantum Lifshitz model is an effective field theory for quantum multicritical systems, that include generalized 2D quantum dimer models in bipartite lattices and their generalizations. It describes a class of quantum phase transitions between ordered and topological phases in 2+1 dimensions. Magnetic perturbations break the dimer conservation law. Electric excitations, whose condensation lead to ordered phases, have been studied extensively both in the classical 3D model and in the quantum 2D model. However, the role of magnetic vortex excitations whose condensation drive these systems into a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological phase has been largely ignored. To study the interplay of both excitations, we perform a perturbative renormalization group study to one loop order and study the stability of the theory away from quantum multi criticality. This is done by generalizing the operator product expansion to anisotropic models. The relation with recent classical Monte Carlo simulations in Rokhsar-Kivelson wave functions will be discussed.

The Renyi Entropy and the Multifractal Spectrum of Systems Near the Localization Transition

We show that the Rényi entropies of single particle, extended wave functions for disordered systems contain information about the multifractal spectrum. It is shown for moments of the Rényi entropy, $S_{n}$, where $|n|<1$, it is possible to extract universal information about the multifractility of such systems. This is shown through a generic calculation and then illustrated through two example models. We find good agreement between our analytic formula and numerical simulations of the two test models. Our formalism is easily extendable to generic non-interacting fermion models. It is also suggested that recent experimental advances in measuring the multifractal spectrum might allow some moments of the Rényi entropy to be measured.

Effective field theories for topological insulators by functional bosonization

Effective field theories that describes the dynamics of a conserved U(1) current in terms of "hydrodynamic" degrees of freedom of topological phases in condensed matter are discussed in general dimension $D=d+1$ using the functional bosonization technique. For non-interacting topological insulators (superconductors) with a conserved U(1) charge and characterized by an integer topological invariant [more specifically, they are topological insulators in the complex symmetry classes (class A and AIII) and in the "primary series" of topological insulators in the eight real symmetry classes], we derive the BF-type topological field theories supplemented with the Chern-Simons (when $D$ is odd) or the $θ$-term (when $D$ is even). For topological insulators characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant (the first and second descendants of the primary series), their topological field theories are obtained by dimensional reduction. Building on this effective field theory description for non-interacting topological phases, we also discuss, following the spirit of the parton construction of the fractional quantum Hall effect by Block and Wen, the putative "fractional" topological insulators and their possible effective field theories, and use them to determine the physical properties of these non-trivial quantum phases.

Electronic Liquid Crystal Phases in Strongly Correlated Systems

In this lectures I discuss the electronic liquid crystal (ELC) phases in correlated electronic systems, what these phases are and in what context they arise. I will go over the strongest experimental evidence for these phases in a variety of systems: the two-dimensional electron gas in magnetic fields, the bilayer material Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ (also in magnetic fields), and a set of phenomena in the cuprate superconductors (and more recently in the pnictide materials) that can be most simply understood in terms of ELC phases. Finally we will go over the theory of these phases, focusing on effective field theory descriptions and some of the known mechanisms that may give rise to these phases in specific models.

Pair-Density-Wave Superconducting Order in Two-Leg Ladders

We show using bosonization methods that extended Hubbard-Heisenberg models on two types of two leg ladders (without flux and with flux $π$ per plaquette) have commensurate pair-density wave (PDW) phases. In the case of the conventional (flux-less) ladder the PDW arises when certain filling fractions for which commensurability conditions are met. For the flux $π$ ladder the PDW phase is generally present. The PDW phase is characterized by a finite spin gap and a superconducting order parameter with a finite (commensurate in this case) wave vector and power-law superconducting correlations. In this phase the uniform superconducting order parameter, the $2k_F$ charge-density-wave (CDW) order parameter and the spin-density- wave Néel order parameter exhibit short range (exponentially decaying) correlations. We discuss in detail the case in which the bonding band of the ladder is half filled for which the PDW phase appears even at weak coupling. The PDW phase is shown to be dual to a uniform superconducting (SC) phase with quasi long range order. By making use of bosonization and the renormalization group we determine the phase diagram of the spin-gapped regime and study the quantum phase transition. The phase boundary between PDW and the uniform SC ordered phases is found to be in the Ising universality class. We generalize the analysis to the case of other commensurate fillings of the bonding band, where we find higher order commensurate PDW states for which we determine the form of the effective bosonized field theory and discuss the phase diagram. We compare our results with recent findings in the Kondo-Heisenberg chain. We show that the formation of PDW order in the ladder embodies the notion of intertwined orders.

Boundary effects on the local density of states of one-dimensional Mott insulators and charge density wave states

We determine the local density of states (LDOS) for spin-gapped one-dimensional charge density wave (CDW) states and Mott insulators in the presence of a hard-wall boundary. We calculate the boundary contribution to the single-particle Green function in the low-energy limit using field theory techniques and analyze it in terms of its Fourier transform in both time and space. The boundary LDOS in the CDW case exhibits a singularity at momentum 2kF, which is indicative of the pinning of the CDW order at the impurity. We further observe several dispersing features at frequencies above the spin gap, which provide a characteristic signature of spin-charge separation. This demonstrates that the boundary LDOS can be used to infer properties of the underlying bulk system. In presence of a boundary magnetic field mid-gap states localized at the boundary emerge. We investigate the signature of such bound states in the LDOS. We discuss implications of our results on STM experiments on quasi-1D systems such as two-leg ladder materials like Sr14Cu24O41. By exchanging the roles of charge and spin sectors, all our results directly carry over to the case of one-dimensional Mott insulators.
