UTC Time, Formally Verified

FV Time is a small-scale verification project developed in the Coq proof assistant using the Mathematical Components libraries. It is a library for managing conversions between time formats (UTC and timestamps), as well as commonly used functions for time arithmetic. As a library for time conversions, its novelty is the implementation of leap seconds, which are part of the UTC standard but usually not implemented in existing libraries. Since the verified functions of FV Time are reasonably simple yet non-trivial, it nicely illustrates our methodology for verifying software with Coq. In this paper we present a description of the project, emphasizing the main problems faced while developing the library, as well as some general-purpose solutions that were produced as by-products and may be used in other verification projects. These include a refinement package between proof-oriented MathComp numbers and computation-oriented primitive numbers from the Coq standard library, as well as a set of tactics to automatically prove certain decidable statements over finite ranges through brute-force computation.

Deducibility and Independence in Beklemishev's Autonomous Provability Calculus

Beklemishev introduced an ordinal notation system for the Feferman-Schütte ordinal $Γ_0$ based on the autonomous expansion of provability algebras. In this paper we present the logic $\textbf{BC}$ (for Bracket Calculus). The language of $\textbf{BC}$ extends said ordinal notation system to a strictly positive modal language. Thus, unlike other provability logics, $\textbf{BC}$ is based on a self-contained signature that gives rise to an ordinal notation system instead of modalities indexed by some ordinal given a priori. The presented logic is proven to be equivalent to $\textbf{RC}_{Γ_0}$, that is, to the strictly positive fragment of $\textbf{GLP}_{Γ_0}$. We then define a combinatorial statement based on $\textbf{BC}$ and show it to be independent of the theory $\textbf{ATR}_0$ of Arithmetical Transfinite Recursion, a theory of second order arithmetic far more powerful than Peano Arithmetic.

Relational Semantics for the Turing Schmerl Calculus

In arXiv:1604.08705 the authors introduced the propositional modal logic $\textbf{TSC}$ (which stands for Turing Schmerl Calculus) which adequately describes the provable interrelations between different kinds of Turing progressions. The current paper defines a model $\mathcal{J}$ which is proven to be a universal model for $\textbf{TSC}$. The model $\mathcal{J}$ is a slight modification of the intensively studied $\mathcal{I}$ : Ignatiev's universal model for the closed fragment of Gödel Löb's polymodal provability logic $\textbf{GLP}$.

A Finitely Supported Frame for the Turing Schmerl Calculus

In arXiv:1604.08705 we introduced the propositional modal logic $\textbf{TSC}$ (which stands for Turing Schmerl Calculus) which adequately describes the provable interrelations between different kinds of Turing progressions. In arXiv:1709.04715 we defined a model $\mathcal{J}$ which is proven to be a universal model for $\textbf{TSC}$ based on the intensively studied Ignatiev's universal model for the closed fragment of $\textbf{GLP}$ (Gödel Löb's polymodal provability logic). In the current paper we present a new universal frame $\mathcal{H}$, which is a slight modification of $\mathcal{J}$, and whose domain allows for a modal definability of each of its worlds.

The logic of Turing progressions

Turing progressions arise by iteratedly adding consistency statements to a base theory. Different notions of consistency give rise to different Turing progressions. In this paper we present a logic that generates exactly all relations that hold between these different Turing progressions given a particular set of natural consistency notions. Thus, the presented logic is proven to arithmetically sound and complete for a natural interpretation, named the \emph{Formalized Turing progressions} (FTP) interpretation.

Interacting Behavior and Emerging Complexity

Can we quantify the change of complexity throughout evolutionary processes? We attempt to address this question through an empirical approach. In very general terms, we simulate two simple organisms on a computer that compete over limited available resources. We implement Global Rules that determine the interaction between two Elementary Cellular Automata on the same grid. Global Rules change the complexity of the state evolution output which suggests that some complexity is intrinsic to the interaction rules themselves. The largest increases in complexity occurred when the interacting elementary rules had very little complexity, suggesting that they are able to accept complexity through interaction only. We also found that some Class 3 or 4 CA rules are more fragile than others to Global Rules, while others are more robust, hence suggesting some intrinsic properties of the rules independent of the Global Rule choice. We provide statistical mappings of Elementary Cellular Automata exposed to Global Rules and different initial conditions onto different complexity classes.

The Selfish Algorithm

The principle of Generalized Natural Selection (GNS) states that in nature, computational processes of high computational sophistication are more likely to maintain/abide than processes of lower computational sophistication provided that sufficiently many resources are around to sustain the processes. In this paper we give a concrete set-up how to test GNS in a weak sense. In particular, we work in the setting of Cellular Automata and see how GNS can manifest itself in this setting.
