Radio-loud Magnetars as Detectors for Axions and Axion-like Particles

We show that, by studying the arrival times of radio pulses from highly-magnetized transient beamed sources, it may be possible to detect light pseudo-scalar particles, such as axions and axion-like particles, whose existence could have considerable implications for the strong-CP problem of QCD as well as the dark matter problem in cosmology. Specifically, such light bosons may be detected with a much greater sensitivity, over a broad particle mass range, than is currently achievable by terrestrial experiments, and using indirect astrophysical considerations. The observable effect was discussed in Chelouche & Guendelman (2009), and is akin to the Stern-Gerlach experiment: the splitting of a photon beam naturally arises when finite coupling exists between the electro-magnetic field and the axion field. The splitting angle of the light beams linearly depends on the photon wavelength, the size of the magnetized region, and the magnetic field gradient in the transverse direction to the propagation direction of the photons. If radio emission in radio-loud magnetars is beamed and originates in regions with strong magnetic field gradients, then splitting of individual pulses may be detectable. We quantify the effect for a simplified model for magnetars, and search for radio beam splitting in the 2\,GHz radio light curves of the radio loud magnetar XTE\,J1810-197.

Axions Scattering From a Quadrupole Magnetic Field

We study the 2D scattering of axions from an accelerator like quadrupole magnet using the eikonal approximation in order to learn whether or not such a setup could serve as a new possible method for detecting axions on terrestrial experiments. The eikonal approximation in 2D is introduced and explained. We also apply the eikonal approximation to two known cases in order to compare it with previous results, obtained using Born's approximation, and discuss its correctness.

Emergent Universe from Scale Invariant Two Measures Theory

The dilaton-gravity sector of a linear in the scalar curvature, scale invariant Two Measures Field Theory (TMT), is explored in detail in the context of closed FRW cosmology and shown to allow stable emerging universe solutions. The model possesses scale invariance which is spontaneously broken due to the intrinsic features of the TMT dynamics. We study the transition from the emerging phase to inflation, and then to a zero cosmological constant phase. We also study the spectrum of density perturbations and the constraints that impose on the parameters of the theory.

Photon Production From The Scattering of Axions Out of a Solenoidal Magnetic Field

We calculate the total cross section for the production of photons from the scattering of axions by a strong inhomogeneous magnetic field in the form of a 2D delta-function, a cylindrical step function and a 2D Gaussian distribution, which can be approximately produced by a solenoidal current. The theoretical result is used to estimate the axion-photon conversion probability which could be expected in a reasonable experimental situation. The calculated conversion probabilities for QCD inspired axions are bigger by a factor of 2.67 (for the cylindrical step function case) than those derived by applying the celebrated 1D calculation of the (inverse) coherent Primakoff effect. We also consider scattering at a resonance $E_{axion} \sim m_{axion}$, which corresponds to the scattering from a delta-function and gives the most enhanced results. Finally, we analyze the results of this work in the astrophysical extension to suggest a way in which they may be directed to a solution to some basic solar physics problems and, in particular, the coronal heating problem.

Stabilization of Neutral Thin Shells By Gravitational Effects From Electric Fields

We study the properties of a system consisting of an uncharged spherically symmetric two dimensional extended object which encloses a stationary point charge placed in the shell's center. We show that there can be a static and stable configuration for the neutral shell, using only the gravitational field of the charged source as a stabilizing mechanism. In particular, two types of shells are studied: a dust shell and a string gas shell. The dynamical possibilities are also analyzed, including the possibility of child universe creation.

Instability of Axions and Photons In The Presence of Cosmic Strings

We report that axions and photons exhibit instability in the presence of cosmic strings that are carrying magnetic flux in their core. The strength of the instability is determined by the symmetry breaking scale of the cosmic string theory. This result would be evident in gamma ray bursts and axions emanating from the cosmic string. These effects will eventually lead to evaporation of the cosmic string.

Cosmic Analogues of the Stern-Gerlach Experiment and the Detection of Light Bosons

We show that, by studying the arrival times of radio pulses from highly-magnetized pulsars, it may be possible to detect light spin-0 bosons (such as axions and axion-like particles) with a much greater sensitivity, over a broad particle mass range than is currently reachable by terrestrial experiments and indirect astrophysical bounds. In particular, we study the effect of splitting of photon-boson beams under intense magnetic field gradients in magnetars and show that radio pulses (at meter wavelengths) may be split and shift by a discernible phase down to a photon-boson coupling constant of g ~ 1e-14 [1/GeV]; i.e., about four orders of magnitude lower than current upper limits on g. The effect increases linearly with photon wavelength with split pulses having equal fluxes and similar polarizations. These properties make the identification of beam-splitting and beam deflection effects straightforward with currently available data. Better understanding of radio emission from magnetars is, however, required to confidently exclude regions in the parameter space when such effects are not observed.

Axions and Photons In Terms of "Particles" and "Anti-Particles"

The axion photon system in an external magnetic field, when for example considered with the geometry of the experiments exploring axion photon mixing (which can be represented by a 1+1 effective model) displays a continuous axion-photon duality symmetry in the limit the axion mass is neglected. The conservation law that follows from this symmetry is obtained. The magnetic field interaction is seen to be equivalent to first order to the interaction of a complex charged field with an external electric potential, where this ficticious "electric potential" is proportional to the external magnetic field. This allows one to solve for the scattering amplitudes using already known scalar QED results. Axion photon oscillations can be understood as violations of a charge symmetry in the scalar QED language. Going beyond the linear theory, the axion photon system in a self consistent magnetic field is shown, using this formalism, to have interesting soliton solutions that represent new non gravitational ways of trapping light. Finally, generalizing the scalar QED formalism to 2+1 dimensions makes it clear that a photon and an axion splitt into two components in an inhomogeneous magnetic field, an effect that reminds us of the Stern Gerlach experiment.

The universe out of a breathing bubble

We consider the model of a false vacuum bubble with a thin wall where the surface energy density is composed of two different components, "domain-wall" type and "dust" type, with opposite signs. We find stably oscillating solutions, which we call "breathing bubbles". By decay to a lower mass state, such a breathing bubble could become either i) a child universe or ii) a bubble that "eats up" the original universe, depending on the sign of the surface energy of the "domain-wall" component. We also discuss the effect of the finite-thickness corrections to the thin-wall approximation and possible origins of the energy contents of our model.

Universes out of almost empty space

Baby universes (inflationary or non--inflationary) are regions of spacetime that disconnect from the original ambient spacetime, which we take to be asymptotically flat spacetime. A particular kind of baby universe solution, involving string--like matter, is studied to show that it can be formed by ``investing'' an arbitrarily small amount of energy, i.e. it can appear from an almost flat space at the classical level. Since this possibility has not yet been clearly recognized in the literature, we then discuss in detail its properties, relevance and possible generalizations.

Child Universes in the Laboratory

Although cosmology is usually considered an observational science, where there is little or no space for experimentation, other approaches can (and have been) also considered. In particular, we can change rather drastically the above, more passive, observational perspective and ask the following question: could it be possible, and how, to create a universe in a laboratory? As a matter of fact, this seems to be possible, according to at least two different paradigms; both of them help to evade the consequences of singularity theorems. In this contribution we will review some of these models and we will also discuss possible extensions and generalizations, by paying a critical attention to the still open issues as, for instance, the detectability of child universes and the properties of quantum tunnelling processes.

Solitons as Key Parts to Produce a Universe in the Laboratory

Cosmology is usually understood as an observational science, where experimentation plays no role. It is interesting, nevertheless, to change this perspective addressing the following question: what should we do to create a universe, in a laboratory? It appears, in fact, that this is, in principle, possible according to at least two different paradigms; both allow to circumvent singularity theorems, i.e. the necessity of singularities in the past of inflating domains which have the required properties to generate a universe similar to ours. The first of them is substantially classical, and is built up considering solitons which collide with surrounding topological defects, generating an inflationary domain of space-time. The second is, instead, partly quantum and considers the possibility of tunnelling of past-non-singular regions of spacetime into an inflating universe, following a well-known instanton proposal. We are, here, going to review some of these models, as well as highlight possible extensions, generalizations and the open issues (as for instance the detectability of child universes and the properties of quantum tunnelling processes) that still affect the description of their dynamics. In doing so we will remark how the works on this subject can represent virtual laboratories to test the role that fundamental principles of physics (particularly, the interplay of quantum and general relativistic realms) played in the formation of our universe.

The role of a dynamical measure and dynamical tension in brane creation and growth

The use of a non-Riemannian measure of integration in the action of strings and branes allows the possibility of dynamical tension. In particular, lower dimensional objects living in the string/brane can induce discontinuities in the tension: the effect of pair creation on the string tension is studied. We investigate then the role that these new features can play in string and brane creation and growth. A mechanism is studied by means of which a scalar field can transfer its energy to the tension of strings and branes. An infinite dimensional symmetry group of this theory is discussed. Creation and growth of bubbles in a formulation that requires mass generation for the bulk gauge fields coupled to the branes is also discussed.

Real and Imaginary Mass Generation in the Presence of External Fields and Axions

Small fluctuations around a constant electric or constant magnetic field F are analyzed in a theory with pseudo scalar [phi] with a coupling g[phi]F~F. It is found that a magnetic external field leads to mass generation for the small perturbations, while an electric field suffers from a tachyonic mass generation in the case in which the field strength is higher than a critical value (related to the pseudo scalar mass). The vacuum energy can be exactly evaluated and it is found that an imaginary part is present when the external electric field exceeds its critical value.

Composite Vector and Tensor Gauge Fields, and Volume-Preserving Diffeomorphisms

We describe new theories of composite vector and tensor (p-form) gauge fields made out of zero-dimensional constituent scalar fields (``primitives''). The local gauge symmetry is replaced by an infinite-dimensional global Noether symmetry -- the group of volume-preserving (symplectic) diffeomorphisms of the target space of the scalar primitives. We find additional non-Maxwell and non-Kalb-Ramond solutions describing topologically massive tensor gauge field configurations in odd space-time dimensions. Generalization to the supersymmetric case is also sketched.
