S Ori 70: still a strong cluster planet candidate

In this paper I show that the coolest $σ$Orionis cluster planet S Ori 70 is still a strong candidate member despite recent claims by Burgasser et al. that it could be a brown dwarf interloper. The main point of my argument is that the colors of S Ori 70 are significantly different to those of field dwarfs. This object has in fact the reddest $H-K$ color of all known T dwarfs, a clear indication of low gravity according to all published models. In a $J-H$ versus $H-K$ diagram, S Ori 70 lies in the region where models of ultracool dwarfs predict that low gravity objects should be located. I conclude that S Ori 70 is still a strong candidate member of the $σ$Orionis open cluster. I briefly discuss additional observational tests that can be carried out with existing facilities to verify the $σ$Orionis membership of this cluster planet candidate.

The pre-main sequence spectroscopic binary UZ Tau East: improved orbital parameters and accretion phase dependence

We present radial-velocity measurements obtained using high- and intermediate-resolution spectroscopic observations of the classical T Tauri star UZ Tau East obtained from 1994 to 1996. We also provide measurements of H$α$ equivalent widths and optical veiling. Combining our radial-velocity data with those recently reported by Prato et al. (2002), we improve the orbital elements for this spectroscopic binary. The orbital period is 18.979$\pm$0.007 days and the eccentricity is e=0.14. We find variability in the H$_α$ emission and veiling, signposts of accretion, but at periastron passage the accretion is not as clearly enhanced as in the case of the binary DQ Tau. The difference in the behaviour of these two binaries is consistent with the hydrodynamical models of accretion from circumbinary disks because UZ Tau East has lower eccentricity than DQ Tau. It seems that enhanced periastron accretion may occur only in systems with very high eccentricity (e$>$0.5).

The sigma Orionis substellar population

VLT/FORS spectroscopy and 2MASS near-infrared photometry, together with previously known data, have been used to establish the membership and the properties of a sample of low-mass candidate members of the sigma Orionis cluster with masses spanning from 1 Msun down to about 0.013 Msun (i.e., deuterium-burning mass limit). We have observed K-band infrared excess and remarkably intense H(alpha) emission in various cluster members, which, in addition to the previously detected forbidden emision lines and the presence of LiI in absorption at 6708 A, have allowed us to tentatively classify sigma Orionis members as classical or weak-line TTauri stars and substellar analogs. Variability of the H(alpha) line has been investigated and detected in some objects. Based on the K-band infrared excesses and the intensity of H(alpha) emission, we estimate that the minimum disk frequency of the sigma Orionis low-mass population is in the range 5-12%.

From the Top to the Bottom of the Main Sequence: A Complete Mass Function of the Young Open Cluster M35

We present very deep and accurate photometry of the open cluster M35 (VRIc filters). We have covered a region of 27.5x27.5 square arcmin. The data range from Ic=12.5 to 23.5 mag, and the color intervals are 0.4\le(V-I)c\le3.0, 0.5\le(R-I)c\le2.5. Roughly, these values span from 1.6 M_\odot down to the substellar limit. By using the location of the stars on color-magnitude and color-color diagrams, we have selected candidate members of this cluster. We have merged our sample with previously published data and obtained a color-magnitude diagram for the complete stellar population of the cluster, covering the spectral range early B - mid M. The Mass Function increases monotonically, when plotted in a log-log form, until it reaches ~0.8 M_\odot (α=2.59). It remains shallower for less massive stars (α=0.81 for 0.8-0.2 M_\odot), whereas a decrease ins observed for stars close to the substellar regime. The total mass of the cluster is ~1600 M_\odot in the area covered by this study.
