HL-LHC Computing Review: Common Tools and Community Software

Common and community software packages, such as ROOT, Geant4 and event generators have been a key part of the LHC's success so far and continued development and optimisation will be critical in the future. The challenges are driven by an ambitious physics programme, notably the LHC accelerator upgrade to high-luminosity, HL-LHC, and the corresponding detector upgrades of ATLAS and CMS. In this document we address the issues for software that is used in multiple experiments (usually even more widely than ATLAS and CMS) and maintained by teams of developers who are either not linked to a particular experiment or who contribute to common software within the context of their experiment activity. We also give space to general considerations for future software and projects that tackle upcoming challenges, no matter who writes it, which is an area where community convergence on best practice is extremely useful.

The Scikit HEP Project -- overview and prospects

Scikit-HEP is a community-driven and community-oriented project with the goal of providing an ecosystem for particle physics data analysis in Python. Scikit-HEP is a toolset of approximately twenty packages and a few "affiliated" packages. It expands the typical Python data analysis tools for particle physicists. Each package focuses on a particular topic, and interacts with other packages in the toolset, where appropriate. Most of the packages are easy to install in many environments; much work has been done this year to provide binary "wheels" on PyPI and conda-forge packages. The Scikit-HEP project has been gaining interest and momentum, by building a user and developer community engaging collaboration across experiments. Some of the packages are being used by other communities, including the astroparticle physics community. An overview of the overall project and toolset will be presented, as well as a vision for development and sustainability.

Direct CP violation in internal W-emission dominated baryonic B decays

The observation of CP violation has been experimentally verified in numerous $B$ decays but is yet to be confirmed in final states with half-spin particles. We focus our attention on baryonic $B$-meson decays mediated dominantly through internal $W$-emission processes and show that they are promising processes to observe for the first time the CP violating effects in $B$ decays to final states with half-spin particles. Specifically, we study the $\bar B^0\to p\bar pπ^0(ρ^0)$ and $\bar B^0\to p\bar pπ^+π^-$ decays. We obtain ${\cal B}(\bar B^0\to p\bar pπ^0)=(5.0\pm 2.1)\times 10^{-7}$, in agreement with current data, and ${\cal B}(\bar B^0\to p\bar pρ^0)\simeq {\cal B}(\bar B^0\to p\bar pπ^0)/3$. Furthermore, we find ${\cal A}_{CP}(\bar B^0\to p\bar pπ^0,p\bar pρ^0,p\bar pπ^+π^-) =(-16.8\pm 5.4,-12.6\pm 3.0,-11.4\pm 1.9)\%$. With measured branching fractions ${\cal B}(\bar B^0\to p\bar pπ^0,p\bar pπ^+π^-)\sim {\cal O}(10^{-6})$, we point out that ${\cal A}_{CP}\sim -(10-20)\%$ can be new observables for CP violation, accessible to the Belle~II and/or LHCb experiments.

Testing the W-exchange mechanism with two-body baryonic B decays

The role of $W$-exchange diagrams in baryonic $B$ decays is poorly understood, and often taken as insignificant and neglected. We show that charmful two-body baryonic $B\to {\bf B}_c \bar {\bf B}'$ decays provide a good test-bed for the study of the $W$-exchange topology, whose contribution is found to be non-negligible; here ${\bf B}_c$ is an anti-triplet or a sextet charmed baryon, and ${\bf \bar B}'$ an octet charmless (anti-)baryon. In particular, we calculate that ${\cal B}(\bar B^0\toΣ_c^{+}\bar p)=(2.9^{+0.8}_{-0.9})\times 10^{-6}$ in good agreement with the experimental upper bound. Its cousin $\bar B_s^0$ mode, $\bar B_s^0\toΛ^+_c\bar p$, is a purely $W$-exchange decay, hence is naturally suited for the study of the role of the $W$-exchange topology. We predict ${\cal B}(\bar B_s^0\toΛ^+_c\bar p)=(0.8\pm 0.3)\times 10^{-6}$, a relatively large branching ratio to be tested with a future measurement by the LHCb collaboration. Other predictions, such as ${\cal B}(\bar B^0\toΞ_c^+\barΣ^-)=(1.1\pm 0.4)\times 10^{-5}$, can be tested with future Belle II measurements.

Machine Learning in High Energy Physics Community White Paper

Machine learning has been applied to several problems in particle physics research, beginning with applications to high-level physics analysis in the 1990s and 2000s, followed by an explosion of applications in particle and event identification and reconstruction in the 2010s. In this document we discuss promising future research and development areas for machine learning in particle physics. We detail a roadmap for their implementation, software and hardware resource requirements, collaborative initiatives with the data science community, academia and industry, and training the particle physics community in data science. The main objective of the document is to connect and motivate these areas of research and development with the physics drivers of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider and future neutrino experiments and identify the resource needs for their implementation. Additionally we identify areas where collaboration with external communities will be of great benefit.

Baryon decays to purely baryonic final states

The LHCb collaboration has presented first experimental evidence that spin-carrying matter and antimatter differ. The study looked at four-body decays of the $Λ_b^0$ baryon. Differences in the behaviour of matter and antimatter are associated with the non-invariance of fundamental interactions under the combined charge-conjugation and parity transformations, known as $C\!P$ violation. We discuss purely baryonic decay processes, i.e. decay processes involving only spin-carrying particles. They are yet unexplored elementary processes. Their study opens a new chapter of flavour physics in the route towards a better understanding of $C\!P$ violation. It may help us to understand the observed matter and antimatter asymmetry of the Universe.

HEP Software Foundation Community White Paper Working Group - Data Analysis and Interpretation

At the heart of experimental high energy physics (HEP) is the development of facilities and instrumentation that provide sensitivity to new phenomena. Our understanding of nature at its most fundamental level is advanced through the analysis and interpretation of data from sophisticated detectors in HEP experiments. The goal of data analysis systems is to realize the maximum possible scientific potential of the data within the constraints of computing and human resources in the least time. To achieve this goal, future analysis systems should empower physicists to access the data with a high level of interactivity, reproducibility and throughput capability. As part of the HEP Software Foundation Community White Paper process, a working group on Data Analysis and Interpretation was formed to assess the challenges and opportunities in HEP data analysis and develop a roadmap for activities in this area over the next decade. In this report, the key findings and recommendations of the Data Analysis and Interpretation Working Group are presented.

Run Time Prediction for Big Data Iterative ML Algorithms: a KMeans case study

Data science and machine learning algorithms running on big data infrastructure are increasingly important in activities ranging from business intelligence and analytics to cybersecurity, smart city management, and many fields of science and engineering. As these algorithms are further integrated into daily operations, understanding how long they take to run on a big data infrastructure is paramount to controlling costs and delivery times. In this paper we discuss the issues involved in understanding the run time of iterative machine learning algorithms and provide a case study of such an algorithm - including a statistical characterization and model of the run time of an implementation of K-Means for the Spark big data engine using the Edward probabilistic programming language.

Three-body charmless baryonic $\bar B^0_s$ decays

We study for the first time the three-body charmless baryonic decays $\bar B^0_s\to \bar p ΛM^+ (p \bar ΛM^-)$, with $M=π, K$. We find that the branching ratios of $\bar B^0_s\to (\bar p ΛK^+$ and $p\bar ΛK^-)$ and $\bar B^0_s\to p\bar Λπ^-$ are $(5.1\pm 1.1)\times 10^{-6}$ and $(2.8\pm 1.5)\times 10^{-7}$, respectively, which agree with recent experimental results reported by the LHCb collaboration. In addition, we derive the relations \mbox{${\cal B}(\bar B^0_s\to \bar p ΛK^+)\simeq (f_K/f_π)^2(τ_{B^0_s}/τ_{B^0}) {\cal B}(\bar B^0\to \bar p Λπ^+)$} and ${\cal B}(\bar B^0_s\to p\bar Λπ^-)/{\cal B}(\bar B^0_s\to p\bar ΛK^-)\simeq {\cal B}(B^-\to p\bar p π^-)/{\cal B}(B^-\to p\bar p K^-)$ to be confronted to future experimental measurements. The fact that all four processes $B^0_s, \bar B^0_s \to p\bar ΛK^-, \bar p ΛK^+$ can occur opens the possibility of decay-time-dependent CP violation measurements in baryonic $B$ decays, something that had not been realised before.

Exploring the simplest purely baryonic decay processes

Though not considered in general, purely baryonic decays could shed light on the puzzle of the baryon number asymmetry in the universe by means of a better understanding of the baryonic nature of our matter world. As such, they constitute a yet unexplored class of decay processes worth investigating. We propose to search for purely baryonic decay processes at the LHCb experiment. No such type of decay has ever been observed. In particular, we concentrate on the decay $Λ_b^0\to p\bar pn$, which is the simplest purely baryonic decay mode, with solely spin-1/2 baryons involved. We predict its decay branching ratio to be ${\cal B}(Λ_b^0\to p\bar pn)=(2.0^{+0.3}_{-0.2})\times 10^{-6}$, which is sufficiently large to make the decay mode accessible to LHCb. Our study can be extended to other purely baryonic decays such as $Λ_b^0\to p\bar p Λ$ and $Λ_b^0\to Λ\bar ΛΛ$, as well as to similar decays of anti-triplet $b$-baryons such as $Ξ_b^{0,-}$.

Charged Particle Tracking with the Timepix ASIC

A prototype particle tracking telescope has been constructed using Timepix and Medipix ASIC hybrid pixel assemblies as the six sensing planes. Each telescope plane consisted of one 1.4 cm2 assembly, providing a 256x256 array of 55 micron square pixels. The telescope achieved a pointing resolution of 2.3 micron at the position of the device under test. During a beam test in 2009 the telescope was used to evaluate in detail the performance of two Timepix hybrid pixel assemblies; a standard planar 300 micron thick sensor, and 285 micron thick double sided 3D sensor. This paper describes a detailed charge calibration study of the pixel devices, which allows the true charge to be extracted, and reports on measurements of the charge collection characteristics and Landau distributions. The planar sensor achieved a best resolution of 4.0 micron for angled tracks, and resolutions of between 4.4 and 11 micron for perpendicular tracks, depending on the applied bias voltage. The double sided 3D sensor, which has significantly less charge sharing, was found to have an optimal resolution of 9.0 micron for angled tracks, and a resolution of 16.0 micron for perpendicular tracks. Based on these studies it is concluded that the Timepix ASIC shows an excellent performance when used as a device for charged particle tracking.
