Strange quark matter from a baryonic approach

We construct a model for dense matter based on low-density nuclear matter properties that exhibits a chiral phase transition and that includes strangeness through hyperonic degrees of freedom. Empirical constraints from nuclear matter alone allow for various scenarios, from a strong first-order chiral transition at relatively low densities through a weaker transition at higher densities, even up to a smooth crossover not far beyond the edge of the allowed range. The model parameters can be chosen such that at asymptotically large densities the chirally restored phase contains strangeness and the speed of sound approaches the conformal limit, resulting in a high-density phase that resembles deconfined quark matter. Additionally, if the model is required to reproduce sufficiently massive compact stars, the allowed parameter range is significantly narrowed down, resulting for instance in a very narrow range for the poorly known slope parameter of the symmetry energy, $L\simeq (88-92)\, {\rm MeV}$. We also find that for the allowed parameter range strangeness does not appear in the form of hyperons in the chirally broken phase and the chiral transition is of first order. Due to its unified approach and relative simplicity - here we restrict ourselves to zero temperature and the mean-field approximation - the model can be used in the future to study dense matter under compact star conditions in the vicinity of the chiral phase transition, for instance to compute the surface tension or to investigate spatially inhomogeneous phases.

Chiral restoration of strange baryons

We review the results of a phenomenological model for cold and dense nuclear matter exhibiting a chiral phase transition. The idea is to model the quark-hadron phase transition under neutron star conditions within a single model, but without adding quark degrees of freedom by hand. To this end, strangeness is included in the form of hyperonic degrees of freedom, whose light counterparts provide the strangeness in the chirally restored phase. In the future, the model can be used for instance to compute the surface tension at the (first-order) chiral phase transition and to study the possible existence of inhomogeneous phases.

$R^2$-gravity quark stars from perturbative QCD

We investigate the structure of quark stars in the framework of $f(R)= R+ αR^2$ gravity using an equation of state for cold quark matter obtained from perturbative QCD, parametrized only by the renormalization scale. We show that a considerably large range of the free parameter $α$, within and even beyond the constraints previously reported in the literature, yield non-negligible modifications in the mass and radius of stars with large central mass densities. Besides, their stability against baryon evaporation is analyzed through the behavior of the associated total binding energies for which we show that these energies are slightly affected by the modified gravity term in the regime of high proper (baryon) masses.

Radial oscillations of quark stars admixed with dark matter

We investigated compact stars consisting of cold quark matter and fermionic dark matter treated as two admixed fluids. We computed the stellar structures and fundamental radial oscillation frequencies for different masses of the dark fermion in the cases of weak and strong self-interacting dark matter. We found that the fundamental frequency can be dramatically modified and, in some cases, stable dark strange planets and dark strangelets with very low masses and radii can be formed.

Insights on the peak in the speed of sound of ultradense matter

In this work we investigate the minimal physical requirements needed for generating a speed of sound that surpasses its asymptotic conformal limit. It is shown that a peak in the speed of sound of homogeneous matter naturally emerges in the transition from a phase with broken chiral symmetry to one with a gapped Fermi surface. We argue that this could be relevant for understanding the peak in the speed of sound displayed by some of the current models for cold ultradense matter. A minimal model implementation of this mechanism is presented, based on the spontaneous breakdown of an approximate particle-antiparticle symmetry, and its thermodynamic properties are determined.

Heavy-quark effects on cold quark matter and self-bound stars

Heavy-quark effects on the equation of state for cold and dense quark matter are obtained from perturbative QCD, yielding observables parametrized only by the renormalization scale. In particular, we investigate the thermodynamics of charm quark matter under the constraints of $β$ equilibrium and electric charge neutrality in a region of densities where perturbative QCD is, in principle, much more reliable. Finally, we analyze the stability of charm stars, a possible new branch of ultradense, self-bound compact stars, and find that they are unstable under radial oscillations.

Radial oscillations in neutron stars from QCD

We study the stability against infinitesimal radial oscillations of neutron stars generated by a set of equations of state obtained from first-principle calculations in cold and dense QCD and constrained by observational data. We consider mild and large violations of the conformal bound, $c_{s} = 1/\sqrt{3}$, in stars that can possibly contain a quark matter core. Some neutron star families in the mass-radius diagram become dynamically unstable due to large oscillation amplitudes near the core.

Cold quark matter with heavy quarks and the stability of charm stars

We study the effects of heavy quarks on the equation of state for cold and dense quark matter obtained from perturbative QCD, yielding observables parametrized only by the renormalization scale. We investigate the thermodynamics of charm quark matter under the constraints of $β$ equilibrium and electric charge neutrality in a region of densities where perturbative QCD is, in principle, much more reliable. We also analyze the stability of charm stars, which might be realized as a new branch of ultradense hybrid compact stars, and find that such quark stars are unstable under radial oscillations.

Radial oscillations of quark stars from perturbative QCD

We perform the general relativistic stability analysis against radial oscillations of unpaired quark stars obtained using the equation of state for cold quark matter from perturbative QCD, the only free parameter being the renormalization scale. This approach consistently incorporates the effects of interactions and includes a built-in estimate of the inherent systematic uncertainties in the evaluation of the equation of state. We also take into account the constraints imposed by the recent gravitational wave event GW 170817 to the compact star masses and radii, and restrict their vibrational spectrum.

Surface tension of dense matter at the chiral phase transition

If a first-order phase transition separates nuclear and quark matter at large baryon density, an interface between these two phases has a nonzero surface tension. We calculate this surface tension within a nucleon-meson model for domain walls and bubbles. Various methods and approximations are discussed and compared, including a numerical evaluation of the spatial profile of the interface. We also compute the surface tension at the other first-order phase transitions of the model: the nuclear liquid-gas transition and, in the parameter regime where it exists, the direct transition from the vacuum to the (approximately) chirally symmetric phase. Identifying the chirally symmetric phase with quark matter - our model does not contain explicit quark degrees of freedom - we find maximal surface tensions of the vacuum-quark transition $Σ_{\rm VQ}\sim 15 \, {\rm MeV}/{\rm fm}^2$, relevant for the surface of quark stars, and of the nuclear-quark transition $Σ_{\rm NQ}\sim 10 \, {\rm MeV}/{\rm fm}^2$, relevant for hybrid stars and for quark matter nucleation in supernovae and neutron star mergers.

New class of compact stars: Pion stars

We investigate the viability of a new type of compact star whose main constituent is a Bose-Einstein condensate of charged pions. Several different setups are considered, where a gas of charged leptons and neutrinos is also present. The pionic equation of state is obtained from lattice QCD simulations in the presence of an isospin chemical potential, and requires no modeling of the nuclear force. The gravitationally bound configurations of these systems are found by solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations. We discuss weak decays within the pion condensed phase and elaborate on the generation mechanism of such objects.

Multiplicity fluctuations near the QCD critical point

Statistical moments of particle multiplicities in heavy-ion collision experiments are an important probe in the exploration of the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter and, particularly, in the search for the QCD critical end point. In order to appropriately interpret experimental measures of these moments, however, it is necessary to understand the role of experimental limitations, as well as background contributions, providing expectations on how critical behavior should be affected by them. We here present a framework for calculating moments of particle multiplicities in the presence of correlations of both critical and spurious origins. We also include effects from resonance decay and a limited acceptance window, as well as detector efficiency. Although we focus on second-order moments, for simplicity, an extension to higher-order moments is straightforward.

Features of the QCD phase diagram from small, noisy, fluctuating systems

Current heavy-ion collision experiments might lead to the discovery of a first-order chiral symmetry breaking phase-transition line, ending in a second-order critical point. Nevertheless, the extraction of information about the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of baryonic matter from the highly dynamic, small, noisy and fluctuating environment formed in such collisions is an extremely challenging task. We address some of the limitations present in the experimental search for the QCD critical point.

Linde problem in Yang-Mills theory compactified on $\mathbb{R}^2 \times \mathbb{T}^2$

We investigate the perturbative expansion in $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory compactified on $\mathbb{R}^2\times \mathbb{T}^2$ where the compact space is a torus $\mathbb{T}^2= S^1_β\times S^1_{L}$, with $S^1_β$ being a thermal circle with period $β=1/T$ ($T$ is the temperature) while $S^1_L$ is a circle with finite length $L=1/M$, where $M$ is an energy scale. A Linde-type analysis indicates that perturbative calculations for the pressure in this theory break down already at order $\mathcal{O}(g^2)$ due to the presence of a non-perturbative scale $\sim g \sqrt{TM}$. We conjecture that a similar result should hold if the torus is replaced by any other compact surface of genus one.

The impact of quark masses on pQCD thermodynamics

We present results for several thermodynamic quantities within the next-to-leading order calculation of the thermodynamic potential in perturbative QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential including non-vanishing quark masses. These results are compared to lattice data and to higher-order optimized perturbative calculations to investigate the trend brought about by mass corrections.

Critical versus spurious fluctuations in the search for the QCD critical point

The neighborhood of the QCD chiral critical point is characterized by intense fluctuations of the chiral field which could, in principle, generate pronounced experimental signatures. However, experimental uncertainties which are inherent to heavy ion collisions, as well as the modest size and duration of the formed plasma, will severely attenuate these signatures. Using Monte Carlo techniques, we study second-order event-by-event moments of pions as a prototype for signatures of the chiral critical point based on the enhancement of the correlation length and event-by-event analysis. We test their viability against some realistic ingredients, similar to the ones found in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan program.

Neutron star structure from QCD

In this review article, we argue that our current understanding of the thermodynamic properties of cold QCD matter, originating from first principles calculations at high and low densities, can be used to efficiently constrain the macroscopic properties of neutron stars. In particular, we demonstrate that combining state-of-the-art results from Chiral Effective Theory and perturbative QCD with the current bounds on neutron star masses, the Equation of State of neutron star matter can be obtained to an accuracy better than 30% at all densities.
