The Physics Case for the New Muon (g-2) Experiment

This White Paper briefly reviews the present status of the muon (g-2) experiment and the physics motivation for a new effort. The present comparison between experiment and theory indicates a tantalizing $3.4 σ$ deviation. An improvement in precision on this comparison by a factor of 2--with the central value remaining unchanged--will exceed the ``discovery'' threshold, with a sensitivity above $6 σ$. The 2.5-fold reduction improvement goal of the new Brookhaven E969 experiment, along with continued steady reduction of the standard model theory uncertainty, will achieve this more definitive test. Already, the (g-2) result is arguably the most compelling indicator of physics beyond the standard model and, at the very least, it represents a major constraint for speculative new theories such as supersymmetry or extra dimensions. In this report, we summarize the present experimental status and provide an up-to-date accounting of the standard model theory, including the expectations for improvement in the hadronic contributions, which dominate the overall uncertainty. Our primary focus is on the physics case that motivates improved experimental and theoretical efforts. Accordingly, we give examples of specific new-physics implications in the context of direct searches at the LHC as well as general arguments about the role of an improved (g-2) measurement. A brief summary of the plans for an upgraded effort complete the report.

Muon g-2: Review of Theory and Experiment

A review of the experimental and theoretical determinations of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is given. The anomaly is defined by a=(g-2)/2, where the Landé g-factor is the proportionality constant that relates the spin to the magnetic moment. For the muon, as well as for the electron and tauon, the anomaly a differs slightly from zero (of order 10^{-3}) because of radiative corrections. In the Standard Model, contributions to the anomaly come from virtual `loops' containing photons and the known massive particles. The relative contribution from heavy particles scales as the square of the lepton mass over the heavy mass, leading to small differences in the anomaly for e, μ, and τ. If there are heavy new particles outside the Standard Model which couple to photons and/or leptons, the relative effect on the muon anomaly will be \sim (m_μ/ m_e)^2 \approx 43\times 10^3 larger compared with the electron anomaly. Because both the theoretical and experimental values of the muon anomaly are determined to high precision, it is an excellent place to search for the effects of new physics, or to constrain speculative extensions to the Standard Model. Details of the current theoretical evaluation, and of the series of experiments that culminates with E821 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory are given. At present the theoretical and the experimental values are known with a similar relative precision of 0.5 ppm. There is, however, a 3.4 standard deviation difference between the two, strongly suggesting the need for continued experimental and theoretical study

Asymptotics of Feynman Diagrams and The Mellin-Barnes Representation

It is shown that the integral representation of Feynman diagrams in terms of the traditional Feynman parameters, when combined with properties of the Mellin--Barnes representation and the so called {\it converse mapping theorem}, provide a very simple and efficient way to obtain the analytic asymptotic behaviours in both the large and small ratios of mass scales.

Theoretical Aspects of Rare Kaon Decays

Most of the analytic approaches which are used at present to understand Kaon decays, get their inspiration from QCD in the limit of a large number of colours $N_c$. After a general overview, we illustrate this with a recent application to the evaluation of the process $K_L\raμ^+ μ^-$ in the Standard Model.

Analytic Approaches to Kaon Physics

Most of the analytic approaches which are used at present to understand the low energy hadronic interactions in Particle Physics, get their inspiration from QCD in the limit of a large number of colors $N_c$. I first illustrate this with the example of the left--right correlation function which is an excellent theoretical laboratory. Next, I present the list of observables which have been computed using a large--$N_c$ QCD approach. Finally, I discuss in some detail examples which are relevant to lattice QCD, in the sense that we can make comparisons.

Large-Nc QCD and Low Energy Interactions

This talk reviews recent progress in formulating the dynamics of the electroweak interactions of hadrons at low energies, within the framework of the 1/Nc-expansion in QCD. The emphasis is put on the basic issues of the approach.

K0-anti-K0 mixing in the 1/Nc expansion

We present the result for the invariant B_K factor of K0-anti-K0 mixing in the chiral limit and to next-to-leading order in the 1/Nc expansion. We explicitly demonstrate the cancellation of the renormalization scale and scheme dependences between short- and long-distance contributions in the final expression. Numerical estimates are then given, by taking into account increasingly refined short- and long-distance constraints of the underlying QCD Green's function which governs the B_K factor.

Large-Nc QCD and Spontaneous Chiral Symmetry Breaking

I report on recent work done in collaboration with M. Knecht on patterns of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the large-Nc limit of QCD-like theories, and with S. Peris and M. Perrottet concerning the question of matching long and short distances in large-Nc QCD.

Chiral Lagrangians and Kaon CP-Violation

These lectures are an introduction to the subject of chiral effective Lagrangians of the Standard Model and their applications, mostly in the sector of non--leptonic kaon decays, with special emphasis on CP--violation. The first lecture gives an introduction to the phenomenological description of the $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ system and $K\ra ππ$ decays. In the second lecture I give an overview of the basic ideas behind the chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT) --approach to hadron dynamics at low energies. The study of the weak interactions of $K$--particles within the framework of $χ$PT is the subject of the third lecture. The fourth lecture is an overview of various models of the QCD low--energy effective action which have been developed during the last few years. The fifth lecture is dedicated to a discussion of the CP--violation $ε$ and $ε'$ parameters, and to the study of the decay mode: $K_{L}\ra π^{0}e^{+}e^{-}$.

On the large-$N_c$ behavior of the $L_7$ coupling in $χ$PT

It is shown that the usual large-$N_c$ counting of the coupling constant $L_{7}$ of the ${\cal O}(p^4)$ low-energy chiral $SU(3)$ Lagrangian \cite{GL85} is in conflict with general properties of QCD in the large-$N_c$ limit. The solution of this conflict within the framework of a chiral $U(3)$ Lagrangian is explained.

Light Quark Masses from QCD

We study the value of the light quark masses combination $m_u+m_d$ in QCD using both Finite Energy Sum Rules and Laplace Sum Rules. We have performed a detailed analysis of both the perturbative QCD and the hadronic parametrization inputs needed in these Sum Rules. As main result, we obtain $m_u\left(1~{\rm GeV}^2\right) + m_d \left(1~{\rm GeV}^2\right) = \left(12\pm2.5\right)~{\rm MeV}$ for the running $\overline{MS}$ masses.
