Yang-Baxter structure of the extended space

We construct an analogue of Yang--Baxter deformations defined by a single Killing vector, that is a solution generating transformation in Einstein--Maxwell dilaton theory. We show that these are nothing but a coordinate transformation in a parent theory related to EMd theory by KK reduction. Similarly (almost-abelian) bi-vector Yang--Baxter deformations are coordinate transformations in the doubled space.

On integrability of tri-vector deformed Type II string

We analyse dynamics of the closed Type IIA and IIB string on various tri-vector deformed background searching for signatures of integrability. Using numerical methods we construct Poincar\'e sections for particular embeddings of the string and show that these are not destroyed under tri-vector deformation. We find that the corresponding Lyapunov exponents decay showing that trajectories do not diverge.

Integrability structures in string theory

This review is a collection of various methods and observations relevant to structures in three-dimensional systems similar to those responsible for integrability of two-dimensional systems. Particular focus is given to Nambu structures and loop variables naturally appearing in membrane dynamics. While reviewing each topic in more details we emphasize connections between them and speculate on possible relations to membrane integrability.

Classical Yang-Baxter equation from beta-supergravity

Yang-Baxter deformations of superstring sigma-models have recently inspired a supergravity solution generating technique. Using the open/closed string map and a Killing bi-vector as a deformation parameter, new solutions can be built, such that the (generalised) supergravity field equations were conjectured to always reduce to the classical Yang-Baxter equation (CYBE). In this work we provide a proof of this conjecture, using a systematic approach based on the so-called $\beta$-supergravity, which is a dynamical theory for the field $\beta^{mn}$ instead of the NSNS 2-form $b_{mn}$.

Exotic branes in Exceptional Field Theory: the SL(5) duality group

We study how exotic branes, i.e. branes whose tensions are proportional to $g_s^{-\alpha}$, with $\alpha>2$, are realised in Exceptional Field Theory (EFT). The generalised torsion of the Weitzenb\"ock connection of the $\operatorname{SL}(5)$ EFT which, in the language of gauged supergravity describes the embedding tensor, is shown to classify the exotic branes whose magnetic fluxes can fit into four internal dimensions. By analysing the weight diagrams of the corresponding representations of $\operatorname{SL}(5)$ we determine the U-duality orbits relating geometric and non-geometric fluxes. As a further application of the formalism we consider the Kaluza-Klein monopole of 11D supergravity and rotate it into the exotic $6^{(3,1)}$-brane.

Fermions and Supersymmetry in $\rm E_{6(6)}$ Exceptional Field Theory

We construct the supersymmetric completion of E$_{6(6)}$-covariant exceptional field theory. The theory is based on a $(5+27)$-dimensional generalized space-time subject to a covariant section constraint. The fermions are tensors under the local Lorentz group ${\rm SO}(1,4)\times {\rm USp}(8)$ and transform as weighted scalars under the E$_{6(6)}$ (internal) generalized diffeomorphisms. We present the complete Lagrangian and prove its invariance under supersymmetry. Upon explicit solution of the section constraint the theory embeds full $D=11$ supergravity and IIB supergravity, respectively.

U-dualities in Type II string theories and M-theory

In this thesis the recently developed duality covariant approach to string and M-theory is investigated. In this formalism the U-duality symmetry of M-theory or T-duality symmetry of Type II string theory becomes manifest upon extending coordinates that describe a background. The effective potential of Double Field Theory is formulated only up to a boundary term and thus does not capture possible topological effects that may come from a boundary. By introducing a generalised normal we derive a manifestly duality covariant boundary term that reproduces the known Gibbons-Hawking action of General Relativity, if the section condition is imposed. It is shown that the full potential can be represented as a sum of the scalar potential of gauged supergravity and a topological term that is a full derivative. The latter is conjectured to capture non-trivial topological information of the corresponding background, such as monodromy around an exotic brane. Next we show that the Scherk-Schwarz reduction of M-theory extended geometry successfully reproduces known structures of maximal gauged supergravities. Local symmetries of the extended space defined by a generalised Lie derivatives reduce to gauge transformations and lead to the embedding tensor written in terms of twist matrices. The scalar potential of maximal gauged supergravity that follows from the effective potential is shown to be duality invariant with no need of section condition. Instead, this condition, that assures the closure of the algebra of generalised diffeomorphisms, takes the form of the quadratic constraints on the embedding tensor.
