Relative Asymptotics of Orthogonal Polynomials for Perturbed Measures

In the context of orthogonal polynomials in the plane we introduce the notion of a polynomially small (PS) perturbation of a measure. In such a case we establish relative asymptotic results for the two sequences of the associated orthonormal polynomials. We also provide results dealing with the behaviour of the zeros of PS perturbations of area orthogonal (Bergman) polynomials.

Energy bounds for codes and designs in Hamming spaces

We obtain universal bounds on the energy of codes and for designs in Hamming spaces. Our bounds hold for a large class of potential functions, allow unified treatment, and can be viewed as a generalization of the Levenshtein bounds for maximal codes.

Random Point Sets on the Sphere --- Hole Radii, Covering, and Separation

Geometric properties of $N$ random points distributed independently and uniformly on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d}\subset\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ with respect to surface area measure are obtained and several related conjectures are posed. In particular, we derive asymptotics (as $N \to \infty$) for the expected moments of the radii of spherical caps associated with the facets of the convex hull of $N$ random points on $\mathbb{S}^{d}$. We provide conjectures for the asymptotic distribution of the scaled radii of these spherical caps and the expected value of the largest of these radii (the covering radius). Numerical evidence is included to support these conjectures. Furthermore, utilizing the extreme law for pairwise angles of Cai et al., we derive precise asymptotics for the expected separation of random points on $\mathbb{S}^{d}$.

Next order energy asymptotics for Riesz potentials on flat tori

Let $Λ$ be a lattice in ${\bf R}^d$ with positive co-volume. Among $Λ$-periodic $N$-point configurations, we consider the minimal renormalized Riesz $s$-energy $\mathcal{E}_{s,Λ}(N)$. While the dominant term in the asymptotic expansion of $\mathcal{E}_{s,Λ}(N)$ as $N$ goes to infinity in the long range case that $0 0$ they are of the form $C_{s,d}|Λ|^{-s/d}N^{1+s/d}$ and $-\frac{2}{d}N\log N+\left(C_{\log,d}-2ζ'_Λ(0)\right)N$ where we show that the constant $C_{s,d}$ is independent of the lattice $Λ$.

On the zeros of asymptotically extremal polynomial sequences in the plane

Let $E$ be a compact set of positive logarithmic capacity in the complex plane and let $\{P_n(z)\}_{1}^{\infty}$ be a sequence of asymptotically extremal monic polynomials for $E$ in the sense that \begin{equation*}%\label{} \limsup_{n\to\infty}\|P_n\|_E^{1/n}\le\mathrm{cap}(E). \end{equation*} The purpose of this note is to provide sufficient geometric conditions on $E$ under which the (full) sequence of normalized counting measures of the zeros of $\{P_n\}$ converges in the weak-star topology to the equilibrium measure on $E$, as $n\to\infty.$ Utilizing an argument of Gardiner and Pommerenke dealing with the balayage of measures, we show that this is true, for example, if the interior of the polynomial convex hull of $E$ has a single component and the boundary of this component has an "inward corner" (more generally, a "non-convex singularity"). This simple fact has thus far not been sufficiently emphasized in the literature. As applications we mention improvements of some known results on the distribution of zeros of some special polynomial sequences.

An Electrostatics Problem on the Sphere Arising from a Nearby Point Charge

For a positively charged insulated d-dimensional sphere we investigate how the distribution of this charge is affected by proximity to a nearby positive or negative point charge when the system is governed by a Riesz s-potential 1/r^s, s>0, where r denotes Euclidean distance between point charges. Of particular interest are those distances from the point charge to the sphere for which the equilibrium charge distribution is no longer supported on the whole of the sphere (i.e. spherical caps of negative charge appear). Arising from this problem attributed to A. A. Gonchar are sequences of polynomials of a complex variable that have some fascinating properties regarding their zeros.

Riesz external field problems on the hypersphere and optimal point separation

We consider the minimal energy problem on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ in the presence of an external field $Q$, where the energy arises from the Riesz potential $1/r^s$ (where $r$ is the Euclidean distance and $s$ is the Riesz parameter) or the logarithmic potential $\log(1/r)$. Characterization theorems of Frostman-type for the associated extremal measure, previously obtained by the last two authors, are extended to the range $d-2 \leq s < d - 1.$ The proof uses a maximum principle for measures supported on $\mathbb{S}^d$. When $Q$ is the Riesz $s$-potential of a signed measure and $d-2 \leq s d$, the short-range pair-interaction enforces well-separation even in the presence of more general external fields. As a further application, we determine the extremal and signed equilibria when the external field is due to a negative point charge outside a positively charged isolated sphere. Moreover, we provide a rigorous analysis of the three point external field problem and numerical results for the four point problem.

Inverse Bernstein inequalities and min-max-min problems on the unit circle

We give a short and elementary proof of an inverse Bernstein-type inequality found by S. Khrushchev for the derivative of a polynomial having all its zeros on the unit circle. The inequality is used to show that equally-spaced points solve a min-max-min problem for the logarithmic potential of such polynomials. Using techniques recently developed for polarization (Chebyshev-type) problems, we show that this optimality also holds for a large class of potentials, including the Riesz potentials $1/r^s$ with $s>0.$

Riesz Polarization Inequalities in Higher Dimensions

We derive bounds and asymptotics for the maximum Riesz polarization quantity $$M_n^p(A) := \max_{{\bold x}_1, {\bold x}_2, \ldots, {\bold x}_n \in A} {\min_{{\bold x} \in A}{\sum_{j=1}^n{\frac{1}{|{\bold x} - {\bold x}_j|^{p}}}}}$$ (which is $n$ times the Chebyshev constant) for quite general sets $A \subset {\Bbb R}^m$ with special focus on the unit sphere and unit ball. We combine elementary averaging arguments with potential theoretic tools to formulate and prove our results. We also give a discrete version of the recent result of Hardin, Kendall, and Saff which solves the Riesz polarization problem for the case when $A$ is the unit circle and $p>0,$ as well as provide an independent proof of their result for $p=4$ that exploits classical polynomial inequalities and yields new estimates. Furthermore, we raise some challenging conjectures.

QMC designs: optimal order Quasi Monte Carlo Integration schemes on the sphere

We study equal weight numerical integration, or Quasi Monte Carlo (QMC) rules, for functions in a Sobolev space $H^s(S^d)$ with smoothness parameter $s>d/2$ defined over the unit sphere $S^d$ in $R^{d+1}$. Focusing on $N$-point sets that achieve optimal order QMC error bounds (as is the case for efficient spherical designs), we are led to introduce the concept of QMC designs: these are sequences of $N$-point node sets $X_N$ on $S^d$ such that the worst-case error of the corresponding QMC rules satisfy a bound of order $O(N^{-s/d})$ as $N\to\infty$ with an implied constant that depends on the $H^s(S^d)$-norm. We provide methods for generation and numerical testing of QMC designs. As a consequence of a recent result of Bondarenko et al. on the existence of spherical designs with appropriate number of points, we show that minimizers of the $N$-point energy for the reproducing kernel for $H^s(S^d)$, $s>d/2$, form a sequence of QMC designs for $H^s(S^d)$. Furthermore, without appealing to the Bondarenko et al. result, we prove that point sets that maximize the sum of suitable powers of the Euclidean distance between pairs of points form a sequence of QMC designs for $H^s(S^d)$ with $s\in(d/2,d/2+1)$. Numerical experiments suggest that many familiar sequences of point sets on the sphere (equal area, spiral, minimal [Coulomb or log.] energy, and Fekete points) are QMC designs for appropriate values of $s$. For comparison purposes we show that sets of random points that are independently and uniformly distributed on the sphere do not constitute QMC designs for any $s>d/2$. If $(X_N)$ is a sequence of QMC designs for $H^s(S^d)$, we prove that it is also a sequence of QMC designs for $\mathbb{H}^{s'}(S^d)$ for all $s'\in(d/2,s)$. This leads to the question of determining the supremum of such $s$, for which we provide estimates based on computations for the aforementioned sequences.

Asymptotics for Hessenberg matrices for the Bergman shift operator on Jordan regions

Let G be a bounded Jordan domain in the complex plane and consider the infinite upper Hessenberg matrix M associated with the Bergman orthogonal polynomials of G. This matrix represents the Bergman shift operator of G. The main purpose of the paper is to describe and analyze a close relation between M and the Toeplitz matrix with symbol the normalized conformal map of the exterior of the unit circle onto the complement of the closure of G. Our results are based on the strong asymptotics of the Bergman polynomials. As an application, we describe and analyze an algorithm for recovering the shape of G from its area moments.

Borcea's variance conjectures on the critical points of polynomials

Closely following recent ideas of J. Borcea, we discuss various modifications and relaxations of Sendov's conjecture about the location of critical points of a polynomial with complex coefficients. The resulting open problems are formulated in terms of matrix theory, mathematical statistics or potential theory. Quite a few links between classical works in the geometry of polynomials and recent advances in the location of spectra of small rank perturbations of structured matrices are established. A couple of simple examples provide natural and sometimes sharp bounds for the proposed conjectures.
