Universal Statistics of the Scattering Coefficient of Chaotic Microwave Cavities

We consider the statistics of the scattering coefficient S of a chaotic microwave cavity coupled to a single port. We remove the non-universal effects of the coupling from the experimental S data using the radiation impedance obtained directly from the experiments. We thus obtain the normalized, complex scattering coefficient whose Probability Density Function (PDF) is predicted to be universal in that it depends only on the loss (quality factor) of the cavity. We compare experimental PDFs of the normalized scattering coefficients with those obtained from Random Matrix Theory (RMT), and find excellent agreement. The results apply to scattering measurements on any wave chaotic system.

The onset of synchronization in large networks of coupled oscillators

We study the transition from incoherence to coherence in large networks of coupled phase oscillators. We present various approximations that describe the behavior of an appropriately defined order parameter past the transition, and generalize recent results for the critical coupling strength. We find that, under appropriate conditions, the coupling strength at which the transition occurs is determined by the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix. We show how, with an additional assumption, a mean field approximation recently proposed is recovered from our results. We test our theory with numerical simulations, and find that it describes the transition when our assumptions are satisfied. We find that our theory describes the transition well in situations in which the mean field approximation fails. We study the finite size effects caused by nodes with small degree and find that they cause the critical coupling strength to increase.

Statistics of Impedance and Scattering Matrices in Chaotic Microwave Cavities: Single Channel Case

We discuss a model for studying the statistical properties of the impedance ($Z$) and scattering ($S$) matrices of open electromagnetic cavities with several transmission lines or waveguides connected to the cavity. In this paper, we mainly discuss the single port case. The generalization to multiple ports is treated in a companion paper. The model is based on assumed properties of chaotic eigenfunctions for the closed system. Analysis of the model successfully reproduces features of the random matrix model believed to be universal, while at the same time incorporating features which are specific to individual systems. Statistical properties of the cavity impedance $Z$ are obtained in terms of the radiation impedance (i.e., the impedance seen at a port with the cavity walls moved to infinity). Effects of wall absorption are discussed. Theoretical predictions are tested by direct comparison with numerical solutions for a specific system. (Here the word universal is used to denote high frequency statistical properties that are shared by the members of the general class of systems whose corresponding ray trajectories are chaotic. These universal properties are, by definition, independent of system-specific details.)

Statistics of Impedance and Scattering Matrices of Chaotic Microwave Cavities with Multiple Ports

The statistical model proposed in an accompanying paper is generalized to treat multiport scattering problems. Attention is first focused on two-port lossless systems and the model is shown to be consistent with Random Matrix Theory. The predictions are then tested by direct numerical simulation for a specific two-port cavity. Formula are derived for the average transmission and reflection coefficients in terms of the port radiation impedance. The cases of cavity with multiple ports, and with a single port and distributed losses are compared.

Two Models for the Study of Congested Internet Connections

In this paper, we introduce two deterministic models aimed at capturing the dynamics of congested Internet connections. The first model is a continuous-time model that combines a system of differential equations with a sudden change in one of the state variables. The second model is a discrete-time model with a time step that arises naturally from the system. Results from these models show good agreement with the well-known ns network simulator, better than the results of a previous, similar model. This is due in large part to the use of the sudden change to reflect the impact of lost data packets. We also discuss the potential use of this model in network traffic state estimation.

Universal Impedance Fluctuations in Wave Chaotic Systems

We experimentally investigate theoretical predictions of universal impedance fluctuations in wave chaotic systems using a microwave analog of a quantum chaotic infinite square well potential. Our approach emphasizes the use of the radiation impedance to remove the non-universal effects of the particular coupling from the outside world to the scatterer. Specific predictions that we test include the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the real (related to the local density of states in disordered metals) and imaginary parts of the normalized cavity impedance, the equality of the variances of these PDFs, and the dependence of the universal PDFs on a single control parameter characterizing the level of loss. We find excellent agreement between the statistical data and theoretical predictions.

Desynchronization waves and localized instabilities in oscillator arrays

We consider a ring of identical or near identical coupled periodic oscillators in which the connections have randomly heterogeneous strength. We use the master stability function method to determine the possible patterns at the desynchronization transition that occurs as the coupling strengths are increased. We demonstrate Anderson localization of the modes of instability, and show that such localized instability generates waves of desynchronization that spread to the whole array. Similar results should apply to other networks with regular topology and heterogeneous connection strengths.

Spatial patterns of desynchronization bursts in networks

We adapt a previous model and analysis method (the {\it master stability function}), extensively used for studying the stability of the synchronous state of networks of identical chaotic oscillators, to the case of oscillators that are similar but not exactly identical. We find that bubbling induced desynchronization bursts occur for some parameter values. These bursts have spatial patterns, which can be predicted from the network connectivity matrix and the unstable periodic orbits embedded in the attractor. We test the analysis of bursts by comparison with numerical experiments. In the case that no bursting occurs, we discuss the deviations from the exactly synchronous state caused by the mismatch between oscillators.

A Local Ensemble Kalman Filter for Atmospheric Data Assimilation

In this paper, we introduce a new, local formulation of the ensemble Kalman Filter approach for atmospheric data assimilation. Our scheme is based on the hypothesis that, when the Earth's surface is divided up into local regions of moderate size, vectors of the forecast uncertainties in such regions tend to lie in a subspace of much lower dimension than that of the full atmospheric state vector of such a region. Ensemble Kalman Filters, in general, assume that the analysis resulting from the data assimilation lies in the same subspace as the expected forecast error. Under our hypothesis the dimension of this subspace is low. This implies that operations only on relatively low dimensional matrices are required. Thus, the data analysis is done locally in a manner allowing massively parallel computation to be exploited. The local analyses are then used to construct global states for advancement to the next forecast time. The method, its potential advantages, properties, and implementation requirements are illustrated by numerical experiments on the Lorenz-96 model. It is found that accurate analysis can be achieved at a cost which is very modest compared to that of a full global ensemble Kalman Filter.

Scaling Properties of Saddle-Node Bifurcations on Fractal Basin Boundaries

We analyze situations where a saddle-node bifurcation occurs on a fractal basin boundary. Specifically, we are interested in what happens when a system parameter is slowly swept in time through the bifurcation. Such situations are known to be indeterminate in the sense that it is difficult to predict the eventual fate of an orbit that tracks the pre-bifurcation node attractor as the system parameter is swept through the bifurcation. In this paper we investigate the scaling of (1) the fractal basin boundary of the static (i.e., unswept) system near the saddle-node bifurcation, (2) the dependence of the orbit's final destination on the sweeping rate, (3) the dependence of the time it takes for an attractor to capture a swept orbit on the sweeping rate, and (4) the dependence of the final attractor capture probability on the noise level. With respect to noise, our main result is that the effect of noise scales with the 5/6 power of the parameter drift rate. Our approach is to first investigate all these issues using one-dimensional map models. The simplification of treatment inherent in one dimension greatly facilitates analysis and numerical experiment, aiding us in obtaining the new results listed above. Following our one-dimensional investigations, we explain that these results can be applied to two-dimensional systems. We show, through numerical experiments on a periodically forced second order differential equation example, that the scalings we have found also apply to systems that result in two dimensional maps.

Long Time Algebraic Relaxation in Chaotic Billiards

The long time algebraic relaxation process in spatially periodic billiards with infinite horizon is shown to display a self-similar time asymptotic form. This form is identical for a class of such billiards, but can be different in an important special case.

Fractal Properties of Robust Strange Nonchaotic Attractors in Maps of Two or More Dimensions

We consider the existence of robust strange nonchaotic attractors (SNA's) in a simple class of quasiperiodically forced systems. Rigorous results are presented demonstrating that the resulting attractors are strange in the sense that their box-counting dimension is N+1 while their information dimension is N. We also show how these properties are manifested in numerical experiments.

Mechanism for the Intermittent Route to Strange Nonchaotic Attractors

Intermittent strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) appear typically in quasiperiodically forced period-doubling systems. As a representative model, we consider the quasiperiodically forced logistic map and investigate the mechanism for the intermittent route to SNAs using rational approximations to the quasiperiodic forcing. It is thus found that a smooth torus is transformed into an intermittent SNA via a phase-dependent saddle-node bifurcation when it collides with a new type of ``ring-shaped'' unstable set. Besides this intermittent transition, other transitions such as the interior, boundary, and band-merging crises may also occur through collision with the ring-shaped unstable sets. Hence the ring-shaped unstable sets play a central role for such dynamical transitions. Furthermore, these kinds of dynamical transitions seem to be ``universal,'' in the sense that they occur typically in a large class of quasiperiodically forced period-doubling systems.

Statistics and Characteristics of Spatio-Temporally Rare Intense Events in Complex Ginzburg-Landau Models

We study the statistics and characteristics of rare intense events in two types of two dimensional Complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation based models. Our numerical simulations show finite amplitude collapse-like solutions which approach the infinite amplitude solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation in an appropriate parameter regime. We also determine the probability distribution function (PDF) of the amplitude of the CGL solutions, which is found to be approximately described by a stretched exponential distribution, $P(|A|) \approx e^{-|A|^η}$, where $η< 1$. This non-Gaussian PDF is explained by the nonlinear characteristics of individual bursts combined with the statistics of bursts. Our results suggest a general picture in which an incoherent background of weakly interacting waves, occasionally, `by chance', initiates intense, coherent, self-reinforcing, highly nonlinear events.

The Onset of Synchronization in Systems of Globally Coupled Chaotic and Periodic Oscillators

A general stability analysis is presented for the determination of the transition from incoherent to coherent behavior in an ensemble of globally coupled, heterogeneous, continuous-time dynamical systems. The formalism allows for the simultaneous presence of ensemble members exhibiting chaotic and periodic behavior, and, in a special case, yields the Kuramoto model for globally coupled periodic oscillators described by a phase. Numerical experiments using different types of ensembles of Lorenz equations with a distribution of parameters are presented.

Evolving Networks with Multi-species Nodes and Spread in the Number of Initial Links

We consider models for growing networks incorporating two effects not previously considered: (i) different species of nodes, with each species having different properties (such as different attachment probabilities to other node species); and (ii) when a new node is born, its number of links to old nodes is random with a given probability distribution. Our numerical simulations show good agreement with analytic solutions. As an application of our model, we investigate the movie-actor network with movies considered as nodes and actors as links.

Multiple Attractor Bifurcations: A Source of Unpredictability in Piecewise Smooth Systems

There exists a variety of physically interesting situations described by continuous maps that are nondifferentiable on some surface in phase space. Such systems exhibit novel types of bifurcations in which multiple coexisting attractors can be created simultaneously. The striking feature of these bifurcations is that they lead to fundamentally unpredictable behavior of orbits as a system parameter is varied slowly through its bifurcation value. This unpredictability gradually disappears as the speed of variation of the system parameter through the bifurcation is reduced to zero.
