How much entropy is produced in strongly coupled Quark-Gluon Plasma (sQGP) by dissipative effects?

We argue that estimates of dissipative effects based on the first-order hydrodynamics with shear viscosity are potentially misleading because higher order terms in the gradient expansion of the dissipative part of the stress tensor tend to reduce them. Using recently obtained sound dispersion relation in thermal $\cal N$=4 supersymmetric plasma, we calculate the $resummed$ effect of these high order terms for Bjorken expansion appropriate to RHIC/LHC collisions. A reduction of entropy production is found to be substantial, up to an order of magnitude.

Emerging Theory of Strongly Coupled Quark-Gluon Plasma

RHIC data have shown robust collective flows, including recent spectacular ``conical flow'' from quenched jets: that confirms that QGP above the critical line is in a strongly coupled regime. One way to study Non-Abelian classical strongly coupled plasmas is via molecular dynamics, which was recently extended to plasmas with electric and magntic charges. First results on its transport (diffusion and viscosity) are reported. AdS/CFT correspondence is another actively pursuit approach to strong coupling regime: we review new results for heavy quark motion and even complete picture of conical flow, obtained from linearized gravity dual. Recent developments in (non-linearized) gravity aims at reproduction of the whole time-dependent picture of the explosion. We finally compare transport properties obtained from RHIC data to those obtained in MD and AdS/CFT.

Strongly coupled plasma with electric and magnetic charges

A number of theoretical and lattice results lead us to believe that Quark-Gluon Plasma not too far from $T_c$ contains not only electrically charged quasiparticles -- quarks and gluons -- but magnetically charged ones -- monopoles and dyons -- as well. Although binary systems like charge-monopole and charge-dyon were considered in details before in both classical and quantum settings, it is the first study of coexisting electric and magnetic particles in many-body context. We perform Molecular Dynamics study of strongly coupled plasmas with $\sim 1000$ particles and different fraction of magnetic charges. Correlation functions and Kubo formulae lead to such transport properties as diffusion constant, shear viscosity and electric conductivity: we compare the first two with empirical data from RHIC experiments as well as results from AdS/CFT correspondence. We also study a number of collective excitations in these systems.

Some thoughts on critical and tricritical points and deconfinement

We start with a discussion of a phase diagram and three special collision energies: (i) the first touching of the mixed phase; (ii) the softest point; (iii) the critical point. We then proceed to more details about the role a massless critical mode should play in the particle interaction and the elliptic flow. We then enter a discussion of whether high density QGP is or is not strongly coupled, and if so what one can say about color superconductivity domain using universality and data on trapped ultracold fermionic atoms. At the end, we briefly discuss deconfinement, or more specifically on whether there are precursors of the QCD strings at $T>T_c$, as well as possible role of magnetically charged excitations (monopoles and dyons).

The conical flow from quenched jets in sQGP

Starting with a reminder of what is strongly coupled Quark-Gluon Plasma (sQGP), we proceed to recent advances in jet quenching and heavy quark diffusion, with a brief summary of various results based on AdS/CFT correspondence. The conical flow is a hydrodynamical phenomenon created by energy and entropy deposited by high energy jets propagating in matter, similar in nature to well known sonic boom from the supersonic planes. After a brief review, we discuss excitations of two hydro modes -- sound and ``diffuson'' -- which can be excited in this way. We also study expanding matter case, with a variable sped of sound, and use adiabatic invariants to show that the parameter $v/T$ ($v$ velocity in the wave, $T$ temperature) is increasing, up to a factor 3, during expansion. At the end we discuss recent results of the Princeton group which derived conical flow from AdS/CFT.

Building a "holographic dual" to QCD in the AdS$_5$: instantons and confinement

Recent attempts to find a ``holographic dual'' to QCD-like theories included a suggestion by Karsh et al (below referred to as KKSS) to incorporate confinement via a potential quadratically increasing into the 5-th direction of the $AdS_5$ space. We show that the same conclusion follows from completely different line of arguments. If instantons are promoted into the 5d space by identifying the instanton size $ρ$ at the 5-th coordinate, the background geometry necessarily should be the AdS$_5$. As I argued already in 1999, confinement described via ``dual superconductivity'' leads to a factor $exp(-2πσρ^2)$, where $σ$ is a string tension, which is nearly exactly identical to that suggested by KKSS. This expression is also well supported by available lattice data. At the end of the paper we propose a IR potential generalized to the nonzero temperatures.

Toward the theory of strongly coupled Quark-Gluon Plasma

We review recent progress toward understanding of sQGP. The phenomenological part includes discussion of elliptic and conical flows at RHIC. Then we proceed to first quantum mechanical studies of manybody states at $T>Tc$, the ``polymeric chains'' $\bar q.g.g... q$ and baryons. A new model for sQGP is a classical dynamical system, in which color vector is changed via the Wong equation. First Molecular Dynamics (MD) results for its diffusion and viscosity are reported. Finally we speculate how strong correlations in matter may help solve puzzles related to jet quenching, both the magnitude and angular distribution.

Instanton-induced Azimuthal Spin Asymmetry in Deep Inelastic Scattering

It is by now well understood that spin asymmetry in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) can appear if two things are both present: (i) a chirality flip of the struck quark; (ii) a nonzero T-odd phase due to its final state interaction. So far (i) was attributed to a new structure/wave function of the nucleon and (ii) to some gluon exchanges. We propose a new mechanism utilizing strong vacuum fluctuations of the gluon field described semiclasically by instantons, and show that both (i) and (ii) are present. The magnitude of the effect is estimated using known parameters of the instanton ensemble in the QCD vacuum and known structure and fragmentation functions, without any new free parameters. The result agrees in sign and (roughly) in magnitude with the available data on single particle inclusive DIS. Furthermore, our predictions uniquely relate effects for longitudinally and transversely polarized targets.

A Cosmological Constant from Gauge Field Instantons?

Although all interactions in the Standard Model generate nonzero shifts of the vacuum energy and pressure, gravity does not interact with them. Assuming (i) that the reason why it is so breaks down at some scale $M_g$ and that (ii) the instanton-induced shifts at such scale generate the observed cosmological constant, we found that it then should happen at a (surprisingly small) scale $M_g\sim 10^3 TeV$.

The \bar q q Bound States and Instanton Molecule at T >~ T_c

The main objective of this work is to explore the evolution in the structure of the quark-anti-quark bound states in going down in the chirally restored phase from the so-called "zero binding points" $T_{zb}$ to the full (unquenched) QCD critical temperature $T_c$ at which the Nambu-Goldstone and Wigner-Weyl modes meet. In doing this, we adopt the idea recently introduced by Shuryak and Zahed for charmed $\bar c c$, light-quark $\bar q q$ mesons $π, σ, ρ, A_1$ and gluons that at $T_{zb}$, the quark-anti-quark scattering length goes through $\infty$ at which conformal invariance is restored, thereby transforming the matter into a near perfect fluid behaving hydrodynamically, as found at RHIC. We show that the binding of these states is accomplished by the combination of (i) the color Coulomb interaction, (ii) the relativistic effects, and (iii) the interaction induced by the instanton-anti-instanton molecules. The spin-spin forces turned out to be small. While near $T_{zb}$ all mesons are large-size nonrelativistic objects bound by Coulomb attraction, near $T_c$ they get much more tightly bound, with many-body collective interactions becoming important and making the $σ$ and $π$ masses approach zero (in the chiral limit). The wave function at the origin grows strongly with binding, and the near-local four-Fermi interactions induced by the instanton molecules play an increasingly more important role as the temperature moves downward toward $T_c$.

A schematic model for pentaquarks based on diquarks

QCD instantons are known to produce deeply bound diquarks which may be used as building blocks in the formation of multiquark states, in particular pentaquarks and dibaryons. We suggest a simple model in which the lowest scalar diquark (and possibly the tensor one) can be treated as an independent ``body'', with the same color and (approximately) the mass as a constituent (anti)quark. In this model a new symmetry between states with the same number of ``bodies'' but different number of quarks appear, in particular the 3-``body'' pentaquarks can be naturally related to decuplet baryons. We estimate both the masses and widths of such states, and then discuss the limitations of this model.

Why does the Quark-Gluon Plasma at RHIC behave as a nearly ideal fluid ?

The lecture is a brief review of the following topics: (i) collective flow phenomena in heavy ion collisions. The data from RHIC indicate robust collective flows, well described by hydrodynamics with expected Equation of State. The transport properties turned out to be unexpected, with very small viscosity; (ii) physics of highly excited matter produced in heavy ion collisions at T_c<T<4T_c is different from weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma because of relatively strong coupling generating bound states of quasiparticles; (iii) wider discussion of other ``strongly coupled systems'' including strongly coupled supersymmetric theories studied via Maldacena duality, as well as recent progress in trapped atoms with very large scattering length.

Understanding the Strong Coupling Limit of the ${\cal N}=4$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills at Finite Temperature

Recently, a number of intriguing results have been obtained for strongly coupled ${\cal N}=4$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in vacuum and matter, using the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this work, we provide a physical picture supporting and explaining most of these results within the gauge theory. The modified Coulomb's law at strong coupling forces static charges to communicate via the high frequency modes of the gauge/scalar fields. Therefore, the interaction between even relativistically moving charges can be approximated by a potential. At strong coupling, WKB arguments yield a series of deeply bound states, whereby the large Coulomb attraction is balanced by centrifugation. The result is a constant density of light bound states at {\bf any} value of the strong coupling, explaining why the thermodynamics and kinetics are coupling constant independent. In essence, at strong coupling the matter is not made of the original quasiparticles but of much lighter (binary) composites. A transition from weak to strong coupling is reminiscent to a transition from high to low $T$ in QCD. We establish novel results for screening in vacuum and matter through a dominant set of diagrams some of which are in qualitative agreement with known strong coupling results.

Fluctuations of the Elliptic Flow

We suggest to perform systematic measurements of the elliptic flow fluctuations which are sensitive to the early stage dynamics of heavy-ion collisions at high-energies. Significant flow fluctuations are shown to be generated due to the formation of topological clusters and development of the filamentation instability. The statistical noise and hydrodynamic fluctuations are also estimated.

Semiclassical Double-Pomeron Production of Glueballs and $η'$

A semiclassical theory of high energy scattering based on interrupted tunneling (instantons) or QCD sphaleron production has been recently developed to describe the growing hadronic cross section and properties of the soft Pomeron. In this work we address double-pomeron processes in this framework for the first time. We specifically derive the cross section for central production of parity even and odd clusters, scalar and pseudoscalar glueballs, and $η'$ in parton-parton scattering at high energy. We show that the specific dependence of the production cross section on all its kinematical variables compares favorably with the UA8 data on inclusive cluster production, as well as the WA102 data on exclusive central production of scalar glueball and $η'$, in double-pomeron exchange $pp$ scattering. The magnitude of the cross section and its dependece on kinematic variables is correct, explaining in particular a large deviation from the Pomeron factorization at cluster masses in the range $M_X<8$ GeV reported by UA8.

Prompt Quark Production by exploding Sphalerons

Following recent works on production and subsequent explosive decay of QCD sphaleron-like clusters, we discuss the mechanism of quark pair production in this process. We first show how the gauge field explosive solution of Luscher and Schechter can be achieved by non-central conformal mapping from the O(4)-symmetric solution. Our main result is a new solution to the Dirac equation in real time in this configuration, obtained by the same inversion of the fermion O(4) zero mode. It explicitly shows how the quark acceleration occurs, starting from the spherically O(3) symmetric zero energy chiral quark state to the final spectrum of non-zero energies. The sphaleron-like clusters with any Chern-Simons number always produce ${\rm N_F} {\bar {\bf L}}{\bf R}$ quarks, and the antisphaleron-like clusters the chirality opposite. The result are relevant for hadron-hadron and nucleus-nucleus collisions at large $\sqrt{s}$, wherein such clusters can be produced.

Prompt Multi-Gluon Production in High Energy Collisions from Singular Yang-Mills Solutions

We study non-perturbative parton-parton scattering in the Landau method using singular O(3) symmetric solutions to the Euclidean Yang-Mills equations. These solutions combine instanton dynamics (tunneling) and overlap (transition) between incoming and vacuum fields. We derive a high-energy solution at small Euclidean times, and assess its susequent escape and decay into gluons in Minkowski space-time. We describe the spectrum of the {\it outgoing} gluons and show that it is related through a particular rescaling to the Yang-Mills sphaleron explosion studied earlier. We assess the number of {\it incoming} gluons in the same configuration, and argue that the observed scaling is in fact more general and describes the energy dependence of the spectra and multiplicities at {\it all} energies. Applications to hadron-hadron and nucleus-nucleus collisions are discussed elsewhere.

Phases of QCD at High Baryon Density

We review recent work on the phase structure of QCD at very high baryon density. We introduce the phenomenon of color superconductivity and discuss how the quark masses and chemical potentials determine the structure of the superfluid quark phase. We comment on the possibility of kaon condensation at very high baryon density and study the competition between superfluid, density wave, and chiral crystal phases at intermediate density.
