Potential consequences of wormhole-mediated entanglement

There are hints that the connectivity of space-time in quantum gravity could emerge from entanglement, and it has further been proposed that any two entangled particles may be connected by a quantum wormhole. One way to test this proposal is by probing the electric field of an entangled charged particle to determine whether its electric field leaks through the putative wormhole. In addition, if such a wormhole is traversable, then it could be possible for the collapse of the wave function to occur in a causal manner, with information about the collapse travelling through the wormhole at the speed of light, rather than the wave function collapse being a global and instantaneous event.

Resolving the $H_0$ tension with diffusion

The tension between the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$ determined from local supernovae data and the one inferred from the cosmic microwave background based on the $Λ$CDM cosmological model may indicate the need for new physics. Here, we show that this `Hubble tension' can be resolved in models involving an effective energy flux from the matter sector into dark energy resulting naturally from a combination of unimodular gravity and an energy diffusion process. The scheme is one where dark energy has the standard equation of state $w=-1$. This proposal provides an alternative phenomenological paradigm accounting for the observations, while offering a general framework to study diffusion effects coming from novel fundamental physical processes.

The singularity in mimetic Kantowski-Sachs cosmology

The dynamics of the vacuum Kantowski-Sachs space-time are studied in the so-called limiting curvature mimetic gravity theory. It is shown that in this theory the vacuum Kantowski-Sachs space-time is always singular. While the departures from general relativity due to the limiting curvature mimetic theory do provide an upper bound on the magnitude of the expansion scalar, both its rate of oscillations and the magnitude of the directional Hubble rates increase without bound and cause curvature invariants to diverge. Also, since the radial scale factor does not vanish in finite (past) time, in this particular theory the Kantowski-Sachs space-time cannot be matched to a null black hole event horizon and, therefore, does not correspond to the interior of a static and spherically symmetric black hole.

Strengthening the TCC Bound on Inflationary Cosmology

We show that the constraints which follow from the {\it Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture} for inflationary cosmology can be strengthened if the pre-inflationary universe was dominated by radiation. The resulting upper bound on the energy scale of inflation is $η\sim 10^4 {\rm GeV}$, close to the scale accessible to accelerator experiments.

A generalized Kasner transition for bouncing Bianchi I models in modified gravity theories

We derive transition rules for Kasner exponents in bouncing Bianchi I models with generic perfect fluid matter fields for a broad class of modified gravity theories where cosmological singularities are resolved and replaced by a non-singular bounce. This is a generalization of results obtained previously in limiting curvature mimetic gravity and loop quantum cosmology. A geometric interpretation is provided for the transition rule as a linear map in the Kasner plane. We show that the general evolution of anisotropies in a Bianchi I universe -- including during the bounce phase -- is equivalent to the motion of a point particle on a sphere, where the sphere is the one-point compactification of the Kasner plane. In addition, we study the evolution of anisotropies in a large family of bouncing Bianchi I space-times. We also present a novel explicit solution to the Einstein equations for a Bianchi I universe with ekpyrotic matter with a constant equation of state $ω=3$.

A quantum gravity extension to the Mixmaster dynamics

In the loop quantum cosmology effective dynamics for the vacuum Bianchi type I and type IX space-times, a non-singular bounce replaces the classical singularity. The bounce can be approximated as an instantaneous transition between two classical vacuum Bianchi I solutions, with simple transition rules relating the solutions before and after the bounce. These transition rules are especially simple when expressed in terms of the Misner variables: the evolution of the mean logarithmic scale factor is reversed, while the shape parameters are unaffected. As a result, the loop quantum cosmology effective dynamics for the vacuum Bianchi IX space-time can be approximated by a sequence of classical vacuum Bianchi I solutions, following the usual Mixmaster transition maps in the classical regime, and undergoing a bounce with this new transition rule in the Planck regime.

Addendum to "Relational Hamiltonian for group field theory"

In this addendum to [Phys. Rev. D 99 (2019) 086017], we extend the construction of a Hamiltonian formalism to a new class of group field theory actions with a kinetic term that is local in the group variables and depends only on their derivatives; such a kinetic term will couple magnetic indices of opposite sign in the Peter-Weyl decomposition. The main results of [Phys. Rev. D 99 (2019) 086017] for the resulting cosmology extend to this case.

A relational Hamiltonian for group field theory

Using a massless scalar field as a clock variable, the Legendre transform of the group field theory Lagrangian gives a relational Hamiltonian. In the classical theory, it is natural to define 'equal relational time' Poisson brackets, where 'equal time' corresponds to equal values of the scalar field clock. The quantum theory can then be defined by imposing 'equal relational time' commutation relations for the fundamental operators of the theory, with the states being elements of a Fock space with their evolution determined by the relational Hamiltonian operator. A particularly interesting family of states are condensates, as they are expected to correspond to the cosmological sector of group field theory. For the relational Hamiltonian considered in this paper, the coarse-grained dynamics of a simple type of condensate states agree exactly with the Friedmann equations in the classical limit, and also include quantum gravity corrections that ensure the big-bang singularity is replaced by a bounce.

The separate universe framework in group field theory condensate cosmology

We use the separate universe framework to study cosmological perturbations within the group field theory formalism for quantum gravity, based on multi-condensate quantum states. Working with a group field theory action for gravity minimally coupled to four scalar fields that can act as a set of relational clock and rods, we argue that these multi-condensate states correspond to cosmological space-times with small long-wavelength scalar perturbations. Equations of motion for the cosmological perturbations are derived, which in the classical limit agree with the standard results of general relativity and also include quantum gravity corrections that become important when the space-time curvature approaches the Planck scale.

The loop quantum cosmology bounce as a Kasner transition

For the Bianchi type I space-time (vacuum or with a massless scalar field), the loop quantum cosmology bounce can be viewed as a rapid transition between two classical solutions, with a simple transformation rule relating the Kasner exponents of the two epochs. This transformation rule can be extended to other Bianchi space-times under the assumption that during the loop quantum cosmology bounce the contribution of the spatial curvature to the Hamiltonian constraint is negligible compared to the kinetic terms. For the vacuum Bianchi type IX space-time there are transformation rules for how each of the parameters characterizing the Kasner epochs change during the bounce. This provides a quantum gravity extension to the Mixmaster dynamics of general relativity, and may have interesting implications for the Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz conjecture.

Modified dispersion relations, inflation and scale invariance

For a certain type of modified dispersion relations, the vacuum quantum state for very short wavelength cosmological perturbations is scale-invariant and it has been suggested that this may be the source of the scale-invariance observed in the temperature anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background. We point out that for this scenario to be possible, it is necessary to redshift these short wavelength modes to cosmological scales in such a way that the scale-invariance is not lost. This requires non-trivial background dynamics before the onset of standard radiation-dominated cosmology; we demonstrate that one possible solution is inflation with a sufficiently large Hubble rate, for this slow roll is not necessary. In addition, we also show that if the slow-roll condition is added to inflation with a large Hubble rate, then for any power law modified dispersion relation quantum vacuum fluctuations become nearly scale-invariant when they exit the Hubble radius.

Effective loop quantum cosmology as a higher-derivative scalar-tensor theory

Recently, Chamseddine and Mukhanov introduced a higher-derivative scalar-tensor theory which leads to a modified Friedmann equation allowing for bouncing solutions. As we note in the present work, this Friedmann equation turns out to reproduce exactly the loop quantum cosmology effective dynamics for a flat isotropic and homogeneous space-time. We generalize this result to obtain a class of scalar-tensor theories, belonging to the family of mimetic gravity, which all reproduce the loop quantum cosmology effective dynamics for flat, closed and open isotropic and homogeneous space-times.

Testing loop quantum cosmology

Loop quantum cosmology predicts that quantum gravity effects resolve the big-bang singularity and replace it by a cosmic bounce. Furthermore, loop quantum cosmology can also modify the form of primordial cosmological perturbations, for example by reducing power at large scales in inflationary models or by suppressing the tensor-to-scalar ratio in the matter bounce scenario; these two effects are potential observational tests for loop quantum cosmology. In this article, I review these predictions and others, and also briefly discuss three open problems in loop quantum cosmology: its relation to loop quantum gravity, the trans-Planckian problem, and a possible transition from a Lorentzian to a Euclidean space-time around the bounce point.

Bouncing cosmologies from quantum gravity condensates

We show how the large-scale cosmological dynamics can be obtained from the hydrodynamics of isotropic group field theory condensate states in the Gross-Pitaevskii approximation. The correct Friedmann equations are recovered in the semi-classical limit for some choices of the parameters in the action for the group field theory, and quantum gravity corrections arise in the high-curvature regime causing a bounce which generically resolves the big-bang and big-crunch singularities.

Bouncing cosmologies with dark matter and dark energy

We review matter bounce scenarios where the matter content is dark matter and dark energy. These cosmologies predict a nearly scale-invariant power spectrum with a slightly red tilt for scalar perturbations and a small tensor-to-scalar ratio. Importantly, these models predict a positive running of the scalar index, contrary to the predictions of the simplest inflationary and ekpyrotic models, and hence could potentially be falsified by future observations. We also review how bouncing cosmological space-times can arise in theories where either the Einstein equations are modified or where matter fields that violate the null energy condition are included.

Emergent Friedmann dynamics with a quantum bounce from quantum gravity condensates

We study the effective cosmological dynamics, emerging as the hydrodynamics of simple condensate states, of a group field theory model for quantum gravity coupled to a massless scalar field and reduced to its isotropic sector. The quantum equations of motion for these group field theory condensate states are given in relational terms with respect to the scalar field, from which effective dynamics for spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic space-times can be extracted. The result is a generalization of the Friedmann equations, including quantum gravity modifications, in a specific regime of the theory corresponding to a Gross-Pitaevskii approximation where interactions are subdominant. The classical Friedmann equations of general relativity are recovered in a suitable semi-classical limit for some range of parameters of the microscopic dynamics. An important result is that the quantum geometries associated with these GFT condensate states are non-singular: a bounce generically occurs in the Planck regime. For some choices of condensate states, these modified Friedmann equations are very similar to those of loop quantum cosmology.

Converting entropy to curvature perturbations after a cosmic bounce

We study two-field bouncing cosmologies in which primordial perturbations are created in either an ekpyrotic or a matter-dominated contraction phase. We use a non-singular ghost condensate bounce model to follow the perturbations through the bounce into the expanding phase of the universe. In contrast to the adiabatic perturbations, which on large scales are conserved across the bounce, entropy perturbations can grow significantly during the bounce phase. If they are converted into adiabatic/curvature perturbations after the bounce, they typically form the dominant contribution to the observed temperature fluctuations in the microwave background, which can have several beneficial implications. For ekpyrotic models, this mechanism loosens the constraints on the amplitude of the ekpyrotic potential while naturally suppressing the intrinsic amount of non-Gaussianity. For matter bounce models, the mechanism amplifies the scalar perturbations compared to the associated primordial gravitational waves.

Separate universes in loop quantum cosmology: framework and applications

I present a streamlined review of how the separate universe approach to cosmological perturbation theory can be used to study the dynamics of long-wavelength scalar perturbations in loop quantum cosmology, and then use it to calculate how long-wavelength curvature perturbations evolve across the loop quantum cosmology bounce assuming a constant equation of state. A similar calculation is possible for tensor modes using results from a complementary approach to cosmological perturbation theory in loop quantum cosmology based on an effective Hamiltonian constraint. An interesting result is that the tensor-to-scalar ratio can be suppressed or amplified by quantum gravity effects during the bounce, depending on the equation of state of the matter field dominating the dynamics. In particular, if the equation of state lies between -1/3 and 1, the value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio will be suppressed during the bounce, in some cases significantly.
