A Note on Corrections to Entanglement Wedge Reconstruction

If entanglement wedge reconstruction is exact, then (under certain assumptions) the area term in the RT formula is a c-number, indicating that the choice of a bulk quantum state does not influence the geometry. Recently Cao, Cheng, Karthikeyan, Li, and Preskill considered a generic perturbation away from exact entanglement wedge reconstruction. The optimal reconstruction was defined; based on this, an effective area function that depends nontrivially on the quantum state was defined and its properties were analyzed. Here we make one aspect of this picture more quantitative, by showing that if as expected the area term in the RT formula is of order 1/G while the bulk entropy is of order 1, then the corrections to entanglement wedge reconstruction are exponentially small (in G) relative to corrections to the area function. In the framework under discussion, there is an area function but no area operator; we discuss to what extent this is the expected behavior in holography.

Wormholes and Averaging over N

The gravitational path integral produces an asymptotic expansion in $G_N$, a fact which is puzzling in the case of observables that are expected to fluctuate wildly. Wormholes appear to compute ensemble averages of functions of such observables, though in typical constructions of AdS/CFT, there are no parameters to average over except, in some examples, a single integer $N$. We introduce a procedure that we call ``Mellin averaging'' to define a sort of asymptotic average of a function of $N$. We argue that Mellin averaging over $N$ may suffice to reproduce the apparent randomness seen in wormhole physics, provided that the dual theory admits an analytic continuation in $N$ and the relevant observables fluctuate on superpolynomially small scales in $N$. As a test case, we consider the spectral form factor in the regime where the double cone is believed to dominate the gravitational path integral and compare to a random matrix theory in which $N$ behaves as a continuous variable. We also describe some toy models of analytic continuation in $N$: a qubit model that can be analytically continued in $N$, and an explicit construction of a deterministic function of $N$ that simulates a sequence of independent draws from a Gaussian ensemble.

Duality and Axion Wormholes

The prototype of a Euclidean wormhole solution of Einstein gravity coupled to matter is the axion wormhole in four spacetime dimensions. In this primarily expository article, we spell out some details about this construction. The axion wormhole has a semiclassical description, found in the original paper [1], in which the matter system is a two-form gauge field B with three-form field strength H=dB. The two-form is dual to a massless scalar, but the wormhole does not have a semiclassical description in terms of the scalar. There is no contradiction here as the duality between the two-form and the scalar is not a simple transformation of classical fields but involves, in Euclidean signature, a Poisson resummation of the sum over fluxes. Because of the need for this Poisson resummation, the scalar field cannot be treated semiclassically in the wormhole throat. Nonetheless, it is straightforward to compute the effective action derived from the wormhole in the scalar (or two-form) language, recovering standard claims.

Emergent Mixed States for Baby Universes and Black Holes

We examine the behavior of sequences of states in the large $N$ limit of AdS/CFT duality in cases in which the bulk duals involve baby universes or black holes. Such sequences generally fail to converge as pure states. Under suitable conditions, such as diverging coarse-grained entropy, they can converge to mixed states for the large $N$ algebra, as in the case of black holes. For Euclidean preparations that produce baby universes, the sequences do not converge, due to wormhole contributions, and so these states cannot admit large $N$ limits. Nevertheless, appropriate averaging over $N$ can lead to convergence to a mixed state. The associated algebras have nontrivial commutants, which can possibly be interpreted as operators in the baby universe.

Supercurrents and (Partial) Supersymmetry in Adjoint QCD$_2$ and Its Generalizations

$1+1$-dimensional $SU(N)$ gauge theory coupled to an adjoint Majorana fermion, also known as adjoint QCD$_2$, has the surprising feature that at fermion mass $\sqrt{\frac{g^2 N}{2 \pi}}$ it exhibits supersymmetry. In this paper, we obtain a deeper insight into how the supersymmetry works by constructing the gauge invariant, Lorentz covariant supercurrent $j_{\mu A}$. Its conservation relies crucially on the presence of a quantum anomaly. We generalize this construction to a class of models where, in addition to an adjoint Majorana fermion of an appropriate mass, the gauge theory is coupled to some collection of massless fermions ($SU(N)$ may be replaced by a more general gauge group). In general, these models have a supersymmetric massive sector and a non-supersymmetric CFT sector [arXiv:2202.04017], but there are cases in which both sectors are supersymmetric. An example of such a gapless, fully supersymmetric model is $SU(N)$ gauge theory coupled to three adjoint Majorana fermions, of which two are massless and the third has mass $\sqrt{\frac{3g^2 N}{2\pi}}$.

Localization of strings on group manifolds

We compute the partition function of the WZW model with target a compact Lie group $G$ by adapting a method used by Choi and Takhtajan to compute the heat kernel of the group manifold. The basic idea is to compute the partition function of a supersymmetric version of the WZW model using a form of supersymmetric localization and then use the fact that, since the fermions of the supersymmetric WZW model are actually decoupled from the bosons, this also determines the partition function of the purely bosonic WZW model. The result is a formula for the partition function as a sum over contributions from abelian classical solutions. We verify for $G=SU(2)$ that this formula agrees with the result for the same partition function that comes from the Weyl-Kac character formula. We extend the method of supersymmetric localization to certain related models such as the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ WZW model and a Wick-rotated version of this model in which the target space is hyperbolic three-space $H_3^+$.

Bras and Kets in Euclidean Path Integrals

Quantum mechanics requires a hermitian inner product <~,~> -- linear in one variable, antilinear in the other -- while the inner product (~,~) that comes most naturally from Euclidean path integrals is linear in each variable. Here we discuss the relation between the two inner products. In a theory with no time-reversal or reflection symmetry, they differ by an operator that complex conjugates the wavefunction and reverses the orientation of space; in the presence of reflection and time-reversal symmetry, space is unoriented so such an operator cannot be defined, but the time-reversal symmetry T is available instead and plays the same role.

Introduction to Black Hole Thermodynamics

These notes aim to provide an introduction to the basics of black hole thermodynamics. After explaining Bekenstein's original proposal that black holes have entropy, we discuss Hawking's discovery of black hole radiation, its analog for Rindler space in the Unruh effect, the Euclidean approach to black hole thermodynamics, some basics about von Neumann entropy and its applications, the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, and the nature of a white hole.

Algebras and states in super-JT gravity

In bosonic JT gravity, minimally coupled to bulk matter, there exists a single, delta-function-normalisable state in each $SL(2,R)$ representation of the matter QFT for any pair of positive energies $E_L, E_R$ at the left and right boundaries. In $\mathcal{N} = 2$ super-JT gravity coupled to matter, we show that there exists a single normalisable state in each $SU(1,1|1)$ matter representation (given appropriate R-charges) that has exactly zero energy at both boundaries. For non-BPS representations, these states have the peculiar property that they break all supersymmetry in the bulk, while preserving supersymmetry at both boundaries. Projecting the algebras of boundary observables onto these zero-energy states leads to a Type II$_1$ von Neumann factor at each boundary that contains a single operator for each supersymmetric matter boundary primary with sufficiently small R-charge. For neutral boundary primaries, the Type II$_1$ factor has a natural action on the matter QFT Hilbert space (with no additional gravitational degrees of freedom) such that the QFT vacuum is the unique tracial state. Moreover, the product of neutral matter operators can be found very explicitly and has a remarkably simple form. When primaries with nonzero matter R-charge are included, the trace can be written as a sum over matter vacuum expectation values associated to each allowed boundary R-charge $J_R$, with the terms in the sum weighted by $\mathrm{cos}(\pi J_R)$. In this way, the ground state algebras encode the ratios of the number of BPS microstates within each R-charge sector. In addition to the results on super-JT gravity described above, we provide a purely Lorentzian derivation of the algebraic structure of canonically quantised (bosonic) JT gravity plus matter, without appeal to the Euclidean gravitational path integrals used in previous work.

Instantons and the Large N=4 Algebra

We investigate the differential geometry of the moduli space of instantons on S^3 x S^1. Extending previous results, we show that a sigma-model with this target space can be expected to possess a large N=4 superconformal symmetry, supporting speculations that this sigma-model may be dual to Type IIB superstring theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1. The sigma-model is parametrized by three integers -- the rank of the gauge group, the instanton number, and a "level" (the integer coefficient of a topologically nontrivial B-field, analogous to a WZW level). These integers are expected to correspond to two five-brane charges and a one-brane charge. The sigma-model is weakly coupled when the level, conjecturally corresponding to one of the five-brane changes, becomes very large, keeping the other parameters fixed. The central charges of the large N=4 algebra agree, at least semiclassically, with expectations from the duality.

Scale and Conformal Invariance in 2d Sigma Models, with an Application to N=4 Supersymmetry

By adapting previously known arguments concerning Ricci flow and the c-theorem, we give a direct proof that in a two-dimensional sigma-model with compact target space, scale invariance implies conformal invariance in perturbation theory. This argument, which applies to a general sigma-model constructed with a target space metric and B-field, is in accord with a more general proof in the literature that applies to arbitrary two-dimensional quantum field theories. Models with extended supersymmetry and a B-field are known to provide interesting test cases for the relation between scale invariance and conformal invariance in sigma-model perturbation theory. We give examples showing that in such models, the obstructions to conformal invariance suggested by general arguments can actually occur in models with target spaces that are not compact or complete. Thus compactness of the target space, or at least a suitable condition of completeness, is necessary as well as sufficient to ensure that scale invariance implies conformal invariance in models of this type.

A Background Independent Algebra in Quantum Gravity

We propose an algebra of operators along an observer's worldline as a background-independent algebra in quantum gravity. In that context, it is natural to think of the Hartle-Hawking no boundary state as a universal state of maximum entropy, and to define entropy in terms of the relative entropy with this state. In the case that the only spacetimes considered correspond to de Sitter vacua with different values of the cosmological constant, this definition leads to sensible results.

$N=2$ JT Supergravity and Matrix Models

Generalizing previous results for $N=0$ and $N=1$, we analyze $N=2$ JT supergravity on asymptotically AdS${}_2$ spaces with arbitrary topology and show that this theory of gravity is dual, in a holographic sense, to a certain random matrix ensemble in which supermultiplets of different $R$-charge are statistically independent and each is described by its own $N=2$ random matrix ensemble. We also analyze the case with a time-reversal symmetry, either commuting or anticommuting with the $R$-charge. In order to compare supergravity to random matrix theory, we develop an $N=2$ analog of the recursion relations for Weil-Petersson volumes originally discovered by Mirzakhani in the bosonic case.

Anomalies and Nonsupersymmetric D-Branes

We revisit some aspects of D-brane theory from the point of view of anomalies. When the boundary condition on a worldsheet boson is flipped from Neumann to Dirichlet, worldsheet supersymmetry requires also reversing the sign of the boundary condition of the corresponding worldsheet fermion. This induces an anomaly which is a mod 2 anomaly in Type II superstring theory and a mod 8 anomaly in Type I superstring theory. The same anomaly also receives contributions from a sign in the sum over bulk spin structures (in Type IIA superstring theory), Chan-Paton factors of symplectic type (in Type I superstring theory), and Majorana fermions that propagate only on the worldsheet boundary. The need to cancel the anomaly accounts for many properties of supersymmetric and especially nonsupersymmetric D-branes in Type I and Type II superstring theory.

The Timelike Tube Theorem in Curved Spacetime

The timelike tube theorem asserts that in quantum field theory without gravity, the algebra of observables in an open set U is the same as the corresponding algebra of observables in its ``timelike envelope'' E(U), which is an open set that is in general larger. The theorem was originally proved in the 1960's by Borchers and Araki for quantum fields in Minkowski space. Here we sketch the proof of a version of the theorem for quantum fields in a general real analytic spacetime. Details have appeared elsewhere.

Algebras, Regions, and Observers

In ordinary quantum field theory, one can define the algebra of observables in a given region in spacetime, but in the presence of gravity, it is expected that this notion ceases to be well-defined. A substitute that appears to make sense in the presence of gravity and that also is more operationally meaningful is to consider the algebra of observables along the timelike worldline of an observer. It is known that such an algebra can be defined in quantum field theory, and the timelike tube theorem of quantum field theory suggests that such an algebra is a good substitute for what in the absence of gravity is the algebra of a region. The static patch in de Sitter space is a concrete example in which it is useful to think in these terms and to explicitly incorporate an observer in the description.

Analytic states in quantum field theory on curved spacetimes

We discuss high energy properties of states for (possibly interacting) quantum fields in curved spacetimes. In particular, if the spacetime is real analytic, we show that an analogue of the timelike tube theorem and the Reeh-Schlieder property hold with respect to states satisfying a weak form of microlocal analyticity condition. The former means the von Neumann algebra of observables of a spacelike tube equals the von Neumann algebra of observables of a significantly bigger region, that is obtained by deforming the boundary of the tube in a timelike manner. This generalizes theorems by Borchers and Araki to curved spacetimes.
