Lissajous coherent states via projection

We construct stationary coherent states concentrated on Lissajous figures of the isotropic and anisotropic harmonic oscillators, the latter having coprime frequencies, by projecting products of ordinary coherent states (one coherent state for each degree of freedom) onto sets of degenerate states. By performing these projections, we are deriving our states from sets of coherent states that are known to follow the classical motion of a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator for arbitrary frequencies. We clarify the nature of any singularities present in the phase of the wavefunction for each of the states we derive, and we establish a rigorous connection between the laminar flow of probability current and the emergence of quantum interference. Through this analysis, we are able to provide a clear and quantifiable definition for a vortex state of the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator (2DHO). In an appendix, we show that our stationary states are true coherent states as they can be used to resolve the relevant identity operators (the above mentioned projection operators) on their respective degenerate subspaces. In the special case of the isotropic oscillator, the states obtained are the SU(2) coherent states, and we derive from our formalism the familiar resolution of unity for these states.

Microring resonator-based photonic circuit for faithfully heralding NOON states

We have designed a Micro-Ring Resonator (MRR) based device that allows for the post-selection of high order NOON states via heralding. NOON states higher than $N=2$ cannot be generated deterministically. By tuning the coupling parameters of the device we can minimize the amplitudes of the 'accidental' states to maximize the probability of obtaining the NOON state upon a successful heralding event. Our device can produce a 3-photon NOON state output with 100% certainty upon a successful heralding detection, which occurs with probability $\frac{8}{27}$ for optimal tunable device parameters. A successful heralding event allows for non-destructive time of flight tracking of the NOON state thus establishing a significantly enhanced level of engineering control for integration of the NOON state into scalable systems for quantum sensing and metrology. We further discuss extensions of our technique to even higher NOON states having $N=4,5$.

Hong-Ou-Mandel Comb and Switch using parallel chains of non-identical Micro-Ring Resonators

Micro-Ring Resonators (MRRs) allow us to access the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect at a variety of tunable parameter combinations along exact analytic solutions. This higher-dimensional space of parameters for which the HOM effect occurs constitutes what is known as a Hong-Ou-Mandel manifold (HOMM). Using a parallel series of non-identical MRRs and changing relative round-trip phase shifts between MRRs allows for the manipulation of the wavelength locations of the HOM effect. Through clever design and fabrication, we can mold the HOMM to place multiple HOM effects, or lack thereof, precisely at desired locations in wavelength. In this paper we discuss how to adjust non-identical MRR parameters to change the resulting HOMM. We also promote example designs that exhibit advantageous HOMM structures, and highlight some of the diverse possibilities that can be accessed with different circuit design. Our main examples are: 1) a wavelength division multiplexer example that matches the HOM effect locations with the already established channels to integrate with a classical communication network and 2) a HOM-based entanglement switch that allows for the rapid switching between 2-photon NOON state outputs and completely separable single photon outputs.

Enhanced Hong-Ou-Mandel Manifolds and figures of merit for linear chains of identical micro-ring resonators

We present an exact analytic expression for the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) curve for any number of identical Micro-Ring Resonators (MRRs) in a linear chain. We investigate the extreme stability of this HOM curve, showing that the HOM effect in linear arrays of MRRs is highly robust. We further use this expression to derive three figures of merit for the HOM curve of linear chains of MRRs: the minimum tau value ($τ_{c}$), the curvature ($\barξ_N$), and the $5\%$ tolerance in tau ($δτ_{N}$). We promote these metrics to characterize the pros and cons of various linear chains of MRRs and inform design and fabrication.

Optimal spin- and planar-quantum squeezing in superpositions of spin coherent states

We investigate the presence of spin- and planar- squeezing in generalized superpositions of atomic (or spin) coherent states (ACS). Spin-squeezing has been shown to be a useful tool in determining the presence of entanglement in multipartite systems, such as collections of two-level atoms, as well as being an indication of reduced projection noise and sub-shot-noise limited phase uncertainty in Ramsey spectroscopy, suitable for measuring phases $ϕ\sim 0$. On the other hand, planar-squeezed states display reduced projection noise in two directions simultaneously and have been shown to lead to enhanced metrological precision in measuring phases without the need for explicit prior knowledge of the phase value. In this paper, we show that the generalized superposition state can be parametrized to display both spin-squeezing along all orthogonal axes and planar-squeezing along all orthogonal planes for all values of $J>1/2$. We close with an application of the maximally spin- and planar-squeezed states to quantum metrology.

Photon pair generation in a lossy microring resonator. II. Entanglement in the output mixed Gaussian squeezed state

In this work we examine the entanglement of the output signal-idler squeezed vacuum state in the Heisenberg picture as a function of the coupling and internal propagation loss parameters of a microring resonator. Using the log-negativity as a measure of entanglement for a mixed Gaussian state, we examine the competitive effects of the transfer matrix that encodes the classical phenomenological loss, as well as the matrix that that incorporates the coupling and internal propagation loss due to the quantum Langevin noise fields required to preserve unitarity of the composite system,(signal-idler) and environment (noise) structure.

Photon pair generation in a lossy microring resonator. I. Theory

We investigate entangled photon pair generation in a lossy microring resonator using an input-output formalism based on the work of Raymer and McKinstrie (Phys. Rev. A 88, 043819 (2013)) and Alsing, et al. (Phys. Rev. A 95, 053828 (2017)) that incorporates circulation factors that account for the multiple round trips of the fields within the cavity. We consider the nonlinear processes of spontaneous parametric down conversion and spontaneous four wave mixing, and we compute the generated biphoton signal-idler state from a single bus microring resonator, along with the generation, coincidence-to-accidental, and heralding efficiency rates. We compare these generalized results to those obtained by previous works employing the standard Langevin input-output formalism.

A quantum optical description of losses in ring resonators based on field operator transformations

In this work we examine loss in ring resonator networks from an "operator valued phasor addition" approach (or OVPA approach) which considers the multiple transmission and cross coupling paths of a quantum field traversing a ring resonator coupled to one or two external waveguide buses. We demonstrate the consistency of our approach by the preservation of the operator commutation relation of the out-coupled bus mode. We compare our results to those obtained from the conventional quantum Langevin approach which introduces noise operators in addition to the quantum Heisenberg equations in order to preserve commutation relations in the presence of loss. It is shown that the two expressions agree in the neighborhood of a cavity resonance where the Langevin approach is applicable, whereas the operator valued phasor addition expression we derive is more general, remaining valid far from resonances.

Robust, scalable Hong-Ou-Mandel manifolds in quantum optical ring resonators

Quantum Information Processing, from cryptography to computation, based upon linear quantum optical circuit elements relies heavily on the ability offered by the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) Effect to route photons from separate input modes into one of two common output modes. Specifically, the HOM Effect accomplishes the path entanglement of two photons at a time such that no coincidences are observed in the output modes of a system exhibiting the effect. In this paper, we prove in principle that a significant increase in the robustness of the HOM Effect can be accomplished in a scalable, readily manufactured nanophotonic system comprised of two waveguides coupled, on chip, to a ring resonator. We show that by operating such a device properly, one can conditionally bunch coincident input photons in a way that is far more robust and controllable than possible with an ordinary balanced beam splitter.

Fully quantum mechanical dynamic analysis of single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide coupled to a traveling-wave resonator

We analyze the dynamics of single photon transport in a single-mode waveguide coupled to a micro-optical resonator using a fully quantum mechanical model. We examine the propagation of a single-photon Gaussian packet through the system under various coupling conditions. We review the theory of single photon transport phenomena as applied to the system and we develop a discussion on the numerical technique we used to solve for dynamical behavior of the quantized field. To demonstrate our method and to establish robust single photon results, we study the process of adiabatically lowering or raising the energy of a single photon trapped in an optical resonator under active tuning of the resonator. We show that our fully quantum mechanical approach reproduces the semi-classical result in the appropriate limit and that the adiabatic invariant has the same form in each case. Finally, we explore the trapping of a single photon in a system of dynamically tuned, coupled optical cavities.
