Effective potentials in the Lifshitz scalar field theory

We study the one-loop effective potentials of the four-dimensional Lifshitz scalar field theory with the particular anisotropic scaling $z=2$, and show that the renormalization is possible without resort to the renormalization of the coupling constant due to the improvement of UV divergence. Moreover, the IR divergence can be also solved for the massless case of $m^2 =0$, because of the absence of the logarithmic divergence. For a massive case, we obtain a condition for the symmetry breaking. Finally, we investigate whether the critical temperature can exist or not in this approximation. The physical consequences of the other logarithmic divergence free model is discussed.

f(R) Black holes

We study the $f(R)$-Maxwell black hole imposed by constant curvature and its all thermodynamic quantities, which may lead to the Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole by redefining Newtonian constant and charge. Further, we obtain the $f(R)$-Yang-Mills black hole imposed by constant curvature, which is related to the Einstein-Yang-Mills black hole in AdS space. Since there is no analytic black hole solution in the presence of Yang-Mills field, we obtain asymptotic solutions. Then, we confirm the presence of these solutions in a numerical way.

Traversable wormhole in the deformed Hořava-Lifshitz gravity

Asymptotically flat wormhole solutions are found in the deformed Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. It turns out that higher curvature terms can not play the role of exotic matters which are crucial to form a traversable wormhole, and external exotic sources are still needed. In particular, the exotic matter behaves like phantom energy if Kehagias-Sfetsos vacuum is considered outside the wormhole. Interestingly, the spherically symmetric setting makes the matter and the higher curvature contribution satisfy four-dimensional conservation of energy in the covariant form.

Stability of f(R) black holes

We investigate the stability of $f(R)$ (Schwarzschild) black hole obtained from the $f(R)$ gravity. It is difficult to carry out the perturbation analysis around the black hole because the linearized Einstein equation is fourth order in $f(R)$ gravity. In order to resolve this difficulty, we transform $f(R)$ gravity into the scalar-tensor theory by introducing two auxiliary scalars. In this case, the linearized curvature scalar becomes a scalaron, showing that all linearized equations are second order, which are the same equations for the massive Brans-Dicke theory. It turns out that the $f(R)$ black hole is stable against the external perturbations if the scalaron does not have a tachyonic mass.

Note on nonsingular cyclic universes in the deformed Horava-Lifshitz gravity

We perform the phase space analysis in terms of the linearization technique in the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with the softly broken detailed balance condition. It can be shown that the bouncing universe appears only for the positive spatial curvature of $k=+1$, and it is possible to obtain oscillating universe with the help of the negative dark radiation and the negative cosmological constant.

Gauged Lifshitz scalar field theories in two dimensions

We present two-dimensional gauged Lifshitz scalar field theories by considering the duality relation between the source current and the Noether current. Requiring the duality partially, we obtain a gauged model which recovers the bosonized Schwinger model for the IR limit. For the exact duality, however, the source current is not conserved, which means that the resulting theory is anomalous, so that the number of degrees of freedom is increased. The second model is consistently formulated by adding the Wess-Zumino type action to maintain the gauge invariance.

Smooth cosmological phase transition in the Horava-Lifshitz gravity

We show that the cosmological phase transition from the first accelerated expansion in the early universe to the second accelerated expansion over the intermediate decelerated expansion is possible in the HL gravity without the ``detailed balance'' condition if the dark scalar energy density is assumed to be negative. Moreover, we obtain various evolutions depending on the scale factor and the expansion rate. Finally, we discuss the existence of the minimum scale in connection with the singularity free condition.

Thermodynamic similarity between the noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole and the Reissner-Nordström black hole

We study thermodynamic quantities and examine the stability of a black hole in a cavity inspired by the noncommutative geometry. It turns out that thermodynamic behavior of the noncommutative black hole is analogous to that of the Reissner-Nordström black hole in the near extremal limit. Moreover, we identify the noncommutative parameter with the squared electric charge with some constants.

Central Charges in 2d Reduced Cosmological Massive Gravity

In the dimensionally reduced model of the 2+1 dimensional cosmological massive gravity, we obtain the central charges of the two types of the black hole based on the entropy function method. One is for the BTZ black hole and the other one is actually for the warped AdS$_3$ black hole.

Thermodynamics of warped AdS$_3$ black hole in the brick wall method

The statistical entropy of a scalar field on the warped AdS$_3$ black hole in the cosmological topologically massive gravity is calculated based on the brick-wall method, which is different from the Wald's entropy formula giving the modified area law due to the higher-derivative corrections in that the entropy still satisfies the area law. It means that the entropy for scalar excitations on this background is independent of higher-order derivative terms or the conventional brick wall method has some limitations to take into account the higher-derivative terms.

Chiral black hole in three-dimensional gravitational Chern-Simons

A chiral black hole can be defined from the three-dimensional pure gravitational Chern-Simons action as an independent gravitational theory. The third order derivative of the Cotton tensor gives a dimensional constant which plays a role of the cosmological constant. The handedness of angular momentum depends on the signature of the Chern-Simons coefficient. Even in the massless black hole which corresponds to the static black hole, it has a nonvanishing angular momentum. We also study statistical entropy and thermodynamic stability.

Entropy of the FRW cosmology based on the brick wall method

The brick wall method in calculations of the entropy of black holes can be applied to the FRW cosmology in order to study the statistical entropy. An appropriate cutoff satisfying the covariant entropy bound can be chosen so that the entropy has a definite bound. Among the entropy for each of cosmological eras, the vacuum energy-dominated era turns out to give the maximal entropy which is in fact compatible with assumptions from the brick wall method.

Two non-commutative parameters and regular cosmological phase transition in the semi-classical dilaton cosmology

We study cosmological phase transitions from modified equations of motion by introducing two non-commutative parameters in the Poisson brackets, which describes the initial- and future-singularity-free phase transition in the soluble semi-classical dilaton gravity with a non-vanishing cosmological constant. Accelerated expansion and decelerated expansion corresponding to the FRW phase appear alternatively, and then it ends up with the second accelerated expansion. The final stage of the universe approaches the flat spacetime independent of the initial state of the curvature scalar as long as the product of the two non-commutative parameters is less than one. Finally, we show that the initial-singularity-free condition is related to the second accelerated expansion of the universe.

Thermodynamics of a black hole based on a generalized uncertainty principle

We study thermodynamic quantities and the stability of a black hole in a cavity using the Euclidean action formalism by Gibbons and Hawking based on the generalized uncertainty relation which is extended in a symmetric way with respect to the space and momentum without loss of generality. Two parameters in the uncertainty relation affect the thermodynamical quantities such as energy, entropy, and the heat capacity. In particular, it can be shown that the small black hole is unstable and it may decay either into a minimal black hole or a large black hole. We discuss a constraint for a large black hole comparable to the size of the cavity in connection with the critical mass.

Thermodynamics of (2+1)-dimensional acoustic black hole based on the generalized uncertainty principle

We study thermodynamic quantities of an acoustic black hole and its thermodynamic stability in a cavity based on the generalized uncertainty principle. It can be shown that there is a minimal black hole which can be a stable remnant after black hole evaporation. Moreover, the behavior of the free energy shows that the large black hole is stable too. Therefore, the acoustic black hole can decay into the remnant or the large black hole.

Entropy Function and Universal Entropy of Two-Dimensional Extremal Black Holes

The entropy for two-dimensional black holes is obtained through the entropy function with the condition that the geometry approaches an $AdS_2$ spacetime in the near horizon limit. It is shown that the entropy is universal and proportional to the value of the dilaton field at the event horizon as expected. We find this universal behavior holds even after the inclusion of higher derivative terms, only modifying the proportional constant. More specifically, a variety of models of the dilaton gravity in two dimensions are considered, in which it is shown that the universal entropy coincides with the well-known results in the previous literatures.

Future singularity free accelerating expansion with the modified Poisson brackets

We show that the second accelerating expansion of the universe appears smoothly from the decelerating universe remarkably after the initial inflation in the two-dimensional soluble semi-classical dilaton gravity along with the modified Poisson brackets of noncommutativity between the relevant fields. However, the ordinary solution coming from the equations of motion following the conventional Poisson algebra describes permanent accelerating universe without any phase change. In this modified model, it turns out that the phase transition is related to the noncommutative Poisson algebra.
