Cosmetic crossings of genus one knots

We show that for genus one knots the Alexander polynomial and the homology of the double cover branching over the knot provide obstructions to cosmetic crossings. As an application we prove the nugatory crossing conjecture for the negatively twisted, positive Whitehead doubles of all knots. We also verify the conjecture for several families of pretzel knots and all genus one knots with up to 10 crossings.

An intrinsic approach to invariants of framed links in 3-manifolds

We study framed links in irreducible 3-manifolds that are $Z$-homology 3-spheres or atoroidal $Q$-homology 3-spheres. We calculate the dual of the Kauffman skein module over the ring of two variable power series with complex coefficients. For links in $S^3$ we give a new construction of the classical Kauffman polynomial.

Cosmetic crossing changes of fibered knots

We prove the nugatory crossing conjecture for fibered knots. We also show that if a knot $K$ is $n$-adjacent to a fibered knot $K'$, for some $n>1$, then either the genus of $K$ is larger than that of $K'$ or $K$ is isotopic to $K'$.

Slopes and colored Jones polynomials of adequate knots

Garoufalidis conjectured a relation between the boundary slopes of a knot and its colored Jones polynomials. According to the conjecture, certain boundary slopes are detected by the sequence of degrees of the colored Jones polynomials. We verify this conjecture for adequate knots, a class that vastly generalizes that of alternating knots.

Cusp areas of Farey manifolds and applications to knot theory

This paper gives the first explicit, two-sided estimates on the cusp area of once-punctured torus bundles, 4-punctured sphere bundles, and 2-bridge link complements. The input for these estimates is purely combinatorial data coming from the Farey tesselation of the hyperbolic plane. The bounds on cusp area lead to explicit bounds on the volume of Dehn fillings of these manifolds, for example sharp bounds on volumes of hyperbolic closed 3-braids in terms of the Schreier normal form of the associated braid word. Finally, these results are applied to derive relations between the Jones polynomial and the volume of hyperbolic knots, and to disprove a related conjecture.

On diagrammatic bounds of knot volumes and spectral invariants

In recent years, several families of hyperbolic knots have been shown to have both volume and $λ_1$ (first eigenvalue of the Laplacian) bounded in terms of the twist number of a diagram, while other families of knots have volume bounded by a generalized twist number. We show that for general knots, neither the twist number nor the generalized twist number of a diagram can provide two-sided bounds on either the volume or $λ_1$. We do so by studying the geometry of a family of hyperbolic knots that we call double coil knots, and finding two-sided bounds in terms of the knot diagrams on both the volume and on $λ_1$. We also extend a result of Lackenby to show that a collection of double coil knot complements forms an expanding family iff their volume is bounded.

Dehn filling, volume, and the Jones polynomial

Given a hyperbolic 3-manifold with torus boundary, we bound the change in volume under a Dehn filling where all slopes have length at least 2π. This result is applied to give explicit diagrammatic bounds on the volumes of many knots and links, as well as their Dehn fillings and branched covers. Finally, we use this result to bound the volumes of knots in terms of the coefficients of their Jones polynomials.

A note on quantum 3-manifold invariants and hyperbolic volume

We investigate the conjectural relations between the Reshetikhin-Turaev-Witten quantum SU(2) invariants and the volume of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Given a finite set of sufficiently large positive integers, say J, we construct examples of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same invariants at all levels in J and different volume.

Alternating sum formulae for the determinant and other link invariants

A classical result states that the determinant of an alternating link is equal to the number of spanning trees in a checkerboard graph of an alternating connected projection of the link. We generalize this result to show that the determinant is the alternating sum of the number of quasi-trees of genus j of the dessin of a non-alternating link. Furthermore, we obtain formulas for other link invariants by counting quantities on dessins. In particular we will show that the $j$-th coefficient of the Jones polynomial is given by sub-dessins of genus less or equal to $j$.

Seifert surfaces, Commutators and Vassiliev invariants

We show that the Vassiliev invariants of a knot K, are obstructions to finding a regular Seifert surface, S, whose complement looks "simple" (e.g. like the complement of a disc) to the lower central series of its fundamental group.

The Jones polynomial and graphs on surfaces

The Jones polynomial of an alternating link is a certain specialization of the Tutte polynomial of the (planar) checkerboard graph associated to an alternating projection of the link. The Bollobas-Riordan-Tutte polynomial generalizes the Tutte polynomial of planar graphs to graphs that are embedded in closed oriented surfaces of higher genus. In this paper we show that the Jones polynomial of any link can be obtained from the Bollobas-Riordan-Tutte polynomial of a certain oriented ribbon graph associated to a link projection. We give some applications of this approach.

Knot adjacency, genus and essential tori

A knot K is called n-adjacent to another knot K', if K admits a projection containing n generalized crossings such that changing any 0 < m \leq n of them yields a projection of K'. We apply techniques from the theory of sutured 3-manifolds, Dehn surgery and the theory of geometric structures of 3-manifolds to answer the question of the extent to which non-isotopic knots can be adjacent to each other. A consequence of our main result is that if K is n-adjacent to K' for all n, then K and K' are isotopic. This provides a partial verification of the conjecture of V. Vassiliev that the finite type knot invariants distinguish all knots. We also show that if no twist about a crossing circle L of a knot K changes the isotopy class of K, then L bounds a disc in the complement of K. This gives a characterization of the nugatory crossings of a knot.

Knot adjacency and fibering

It is known that the Alexander polynomial detects fibered knots and 3-manifolds that fiber over the circle. In this note, we show that when the Alexander polynomial becomes inconclusive, the notion of "knot adjacency", studied in the paper "Knot adjacency, genus and essential tori" by the authors, can be used to obtain obstructions to fibering of knots and of 3-manifolds. As an application, given a fibered knot K', we construct infinitely many non-fibered knots that share the same Alexander module and the same Vassiliev invariants up to certain orders with K'. Our construction also provides, for every natural number n, examples of irreducible 3-manifolds that cannot be distinguished by the Cochran-Melvin finite type invariants of order < n.

Alexander polynomial, finite type invariants and volume of hyperbolic knots

We show that given n>0, there exists a hyperbolic knot K with trivial Alexander polynomial, trivial finite type invariants of order <=n, and such that the volume of the complement of K is larger than n. This contrasts with the known statement that the volume of the complement of a hyperbolic alternating knot is bounded above by a linear function of the coefficients of the Alexander polynomial of the knot. As a corollary to our main result we obtain that, for every m>0, there exists a sequence of hyperbolic knots with trivial finite type invariants of order <=m but arbitrarily large volume. We discuss how our results fit within the framework of relations between the finite type invariants and the volume of hyperbolic knots, predicted by Kashaev's hyperbolic volume conjecture.

Knot adjacency and satellites

A knot K is called n-adjacent to the unknot, if K admits a projection containing n generalized crossings such that changing any m (no larger than n) of them yields a projection of the unknot. We show that a non-trivial satellite knot K is n-adjacent to the unknot, for some n>0, if and only if it is n-adjacent to the unknot in any companion solid torus. In particular, every model knot of K is n-adjacent to the unknot. Along the way of proving these results, we also show that 2-bridge knots of the form K_{p/q}, where p/q=[2q_1,2q_2] for some integers q_1,q_2, are precisely those knots that have genus one and are 2-adjacent to the unknot.

Regular Seifert surfaces and Vassiliev knot invariants

We show that the Vassiliev invariants of orders $\leq n$ of a knot K, are obstructions to finding a regular Seifert surface, S, whose complement looks "simple" (e.g. like the complement of a disc) to the lower central series of its fundamental group. As a consequence of this, we obtain that the Vassiliev invariants of the knot $K=\partial S$ are null-concordance obstructions of certain links that can be obtained from regular spines of S. We also discuss various generalizations of these results, and we conjecture a geometric characterization of knots whose invariants of all orders vanish.

Milnor and finite type invariants of plat-closures

We show that for an $n$-component, $n$-bridge link and a positive integer $m$, the following is true: If the longitudes of $L$ lie in the $(m+2)$-th term of the lower central series of the link group then all the finite type invariants of orders $\leq m$ for $L$ are the same as these of the $n$-component unlink.
