Exciton-polariton condensates in epsilon-near-zero cavities

We propose an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) artificial cavity that can enhance light-matter coupling around the ENZ frequency and theoretically show the possibility of exciton-polariton condensation in the suggested platform. By using a rate equation model based on the driven-dissipative reservoir approach, we calculate the pump threshold for condensation and then compare the suggested platform's advantages/disadvantages with distributed Bragg reflector cavities. We also discuss the validity of the mean field theory within our model.

Simulating Hawking radiation in quantum many-body systems: deviations from the thermal spectrum

We investigate a recently proposed one-to-one correspondence between quantum field theories in two-dimensional curved spacetime and quantum many-body systems, which enables the simulation of Hawking radiation in static background spacetimes. In particular, we demonstrate that deviations from the thermal spectrum, as predicted by the well-known tunneling method, can be observed in many-body simulations.

N-channel parity-time symmetry

We calculated the eigenvalues for a general N-channel coupled system with parity-time symmetry due to equal loss/gain. We found that the eigenspectrum displays a mixing of parity-time symmetric and broken phases, with N-2 of the eigenvalues being parity-time broken whereas the remaining two being either parity-time symmetric or broken depending on the loss/gain and coupling parameters. Our results also show that mixing of parity-time symmetric and parity-time broken phases can only be obtained for at least four-channels if other degrees of freedom like polarization is not taken into account.

Scattering of Spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Particles from a $\cal PT$-symmetric Complex Potential

In this letter, we study the scattering of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles from a spin-independent parity time ($\cal PT$)-symmetric complex potential, and for the first time, theoretically demonstrate the coexistence of $\cal PT$-symmetric and $\cal PT$-broken phases for broadband energy spectra in this system. We also show the existence of anisotropic transmission resonances, accessible through the tuning of energy. Our results are promising for applications in spintronics, semiconductor-based devices, and a better understanding of the topological surface states.

Broadband mixing of ${\cal PT}$-symmetric and ${\cal PT}$-broken phases in photonic heterostructures with a one-dimensional loss/gain bilayer

Combining loss and gain components in one photonic heterostructure opens a new route to efficient manipulation by radiation, transmission, absorption, and scattering of electromagnetic waves. Therefore, loss/gain structures enabling ${\cal PT}$-symmetric and ${\cal PT}$-broken phases for eigenvalues have extensively been studied in the last decade. In particular, translation from one phase to another, which occurs at the critical point in the two-channel structures with one-dimensional loss/gain components, is often associated with one-way transmission. In this report, broadband mixing of the ${\cal PT}$-symmetric and ${\cal PT}$-broken phases for eigenvalues is theoretically demonstrated in heterostructures with four channels obtained by combining a one-dimensional loss/gain bilayer and one or two thin polarization-converting components (PCCs). The broadband phase mixing in the four-channel case is expected to yield advanced transmission and absorption regimes. Various configurations are analyzed, which are distinguished in symmetry properties and polarization conversion regime of PCCs. The conditions necessary for phase mixing are discussed. The simplest two-component configurations with broadband mixing are found, as well as the more complex three-component configurations wherein symmetric and broken sets are not yet mixed and appear in the neighbouring frequency ranges. Peculiarities of eigenvalue behaviour are considered for different permittivity ranges of loss/gain medium, i.e., from epsilon-near-zero to high-epsilon regime.

CDW-Exciton Condensate Competition and a Condensate Driven Force

We examine the competition between the charge-density wave (CDW) instability and the excitonic condensate (EC) in spatially separated layers of electrons and holes. The CDW and the EC order parameters (OPs), described by two different mechanisms and hence two different transition temperatures $T^{CDW}_c$ and $T^{EC}_c$, are self-consistently coupled by a microscopic mean field theory. We discuss the results in our model specifically focusing on the transition-metal dichalcogenides which are considered as the most typical examples of strongly coupled CDW/EC systems with atomic layer separations where the electronic energy scales are large with the critical temperatures in the range $T^{EC}_c \sim T^{CDW}_c \sim 100-200 K$. An important consequence of this is that the excitonic energy gap, hence the condensed free energy, vary with the layer separation resulting in a new type of force ${\cal F}_{EC}$. We discuss the possibility of this force as the possible driver of the structural lattice deformation observed in some TMDCs with a particular attention on the $ 1 {\it T}$-$TiSe_2$ below $200 K$.

A Measurable Force driven by an Excitonic Condensate in DQWs

New free energy related signatures of the condensed excitons in Double Quantum Wells (DQW) are predicted and experiments are proposed to measure the effects. These signatures are related to the measurement of a conceptually new kind of force ($\approx 10^{-9} N$) due to the condensate. This force, which may be coined as the Exciton Condensate (EC)-force is attractive and reminiscent of the Casimir force between two perfect metallic plates, but also distinctively different from it by its driving mechanism and dependence on the parameters of the condensate. The proposed experiments here are based on a recent experimental work on a driven micromechanical oscillator with a proven high quality factor. The free energy related measurements are immune to the commonly agreed drawbacks of the existing photoluminescence experiments. In this regard, the proposed experiments are highly decisive about the EC.

Robust Ground State and Artificial Gauge in DQW Exciton Condensates under Weak Magnetic Field

Exciton condensate is a vast playground in studying a number of symmetries that are of high interest in the recent developments in topological condensed matter physics. In DQWs they pose highly nonconventional properties due to the pairing of non identical fermions with a spin dependent order parameter. Here, we demonstrate a new feature in these systems: the robustness of the ground state to weak external B-field and the appearance of the artificial spinor gauge fields beyond a critical field strength where, negative energy pair-breaking quasi particle excitations are created in certain $k$ regions (DX-pockets). The DX-pockets are the Kramers symmetry broken analogs of the negative energy pockets examined in the 60s by Sarma, where they principally differ from the latter in their non-degenerate energy bands due to the absence of the time reversal symmetry. They respect a disk or a shell-topology in $k$-space or a mixture between them depending on the B-field strength and the electron-hole mismatch. The Berry connection between the artificial flux and the TKNN number is made. The artificial spinor gauge field describes a collection of pure spin vortices in real space when the B-field has only inplane components.
