Modeling the effects of natural disasters, wars, and migrations on sustainability or collapse of pre-industrial societies: Random perturbations of the Human and Nature Dynamics (HANDY) model

We study the effect of random perturbations in the Human and Nature Dynamics (HANDY) model. HANDY models the interactions between human population, depletion, and consumption of natural resources. HANDY explains how endogenous human--nature interactions could lead to sustainability or collapse in past societies. We introduce a Gaussian random noise perturbation on the population change to represent generic external perturbations. The robustness of the results is investigated with statistical analysis based on probability distributions of specific events. Our study shows that the results of the unperturbed HANDY model are robust under small perturbations of $\lesssim$ 10\% of the Human population. Our results confirm that endogenous dynamics drive the societal cycles. However, exogenous perturbations, such as floods, droughts, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, infectious disease, epidemics, and wars, can accelerate or delay a collapse cycle.

Microscopic parametrization of the near threshold oscillations of the nucleon time-like effective electromagnetic form factors

We present an analysis of the recent near threshold BESIII data for the nucleon time-like effective form factors. The damped oscillation emerging from the subtraction of the dipole formula is treated in non-perturbative-QCD, making use of the light cone distribution amplitudes expansion. Non-perturbative effects are accounted for by considering Q2-dependent coefficients in such expansions, whose free parameters are determined by fitting to the proton and neutron data. Possible implications and future analysis have been discussed.

Radiative Corrections: From Medium to High Energy Experiments

Radiative corrections are crucial for modern high-precision physics experiments, and are an area of active research in the experimental and theoretical community. Here we provide an overview of the state of the field of radiative corrections with a focus on several topics: lepton-proton scattering, QED corrections in deep-inelastic scattering, and in radiative light-hadron decays. Particular emphasis is placed on the two-photon exchange, believed to be responsible for the proton form-factor discrepancy, and associated Monte-Carlo codes. We encourage the community to continue developing theoretical techniques to treat radiative corrections, and perform experimental tests of these corrections.

At the heart of baryonic matter the ARBUZ model favored by recent hadron form factor data

Data on electromagnetic form factors of proton, neutron, and $Λ$ from annihilation and scattering reactions are collected and interpreted in the frame of a generalized picture of the internal structure of baryons which holds in space-like and time-like regions. It is shown that these data give an insight of the space structure of the baryon for distances one hundred times smaller than the baryon size and, in the time-like region, a vision of the time evolution of the hadronic matter for times up to $10^{-25}$~s, that is two orders of magnitude shorter than the time taken by the light to cross the volume of a proton. In the proposed interpretation, the electric form factor of the proton in the space-like region can not cross zero, but vanishes or stays very small, as an extrapolation of the data seems to show. In the time-like region specific structures appearing in the data give evidence of the dominance of the quark-diquark structure in a specific range of time of the evolution of the system.

Compared analysis of time-like hyperon form factors

Data on hyperon form factors recently obtained from annihilation reactions are compared each other, and to proton and neutron form factors, in terms of two kinematical variables: the transferred momentum square, $q^2$, and the modulus $P$ of the relative momentum between the outgoing baryons. They are critically discussed in terms of possible correlated structures. The present status of the time-like form factor data for baryons is described and suggestions are given on the reactions and the kinematical range where data are desirable in order to clarify the arisen questions.

The first exploration of the physical Riemann surfaces of the ratio $G_E^Λ/G_M^Λ$

Recently, the BESIII experiment renewed the interest on baryon form factors by measuring the modulus and phase of the ratio $G_E^Λ/G_M^Λ$ between the electric and the magnetic $Λ$ form factors with unprecedented accuracy. The BESIII measurement together with older, less precise data, can be analyzed by means of a dispersive procedure based on analyticity and a set of first-principle constraints. Such a dispersive procedure shows the unique ability to determine for the first time the complex structure of the ratio knowing its modulus and phase measured by the BESIII collaboration at only one energy point. Different classes of solutions are obtained, and in all cases, the time-like and space-like behaviors show interesting properties: space-like zeros or unexpected large determinations for the phase. More data at different energies would be crucial to enhance the predictive power of the dispersive procedure and to unravel further remarkable features of the $Λ$ baryon.

New fit of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors from $e^+e^-$ colliders

The data on the proton form factors in the time-like region from the BaBar, BESIII and CMD-3 Collaborations are examined to have coherent pieces of information on the proton structure. Oscillations in the annihilation cross section, previously observed, are determined with better precision. The moduli of the individual form factors, determined for the first time, their ratio and the angular asymmetry of the annihilation reaction $e^+e^-\to\bar p p$ are discussed. Fiits of the available data on the cross section, the effective form factor, and the form factor ratio, allow to propose a description of the electric and magnetic time-like form factors from the threshold up to the highest momenta.

Sensitivity of the elastic electron-proton cross section to the proton radius

The precise determination of the proton radius from recent elastic scattering electron-proton data is discussed. The necessary precision on the elastic cross section to discriminate among the values coming from atomic spectroscopy is scrutinized in terms of the relevant quantity, i.e., the derivative of the form factor. It is shown that such precision is two orders of magnitude higher than the precision on the cross section, that is the measured observable. Different fits on the available data and of their discrete derivative, with analytical constraints are shown. The systematic error associated to the radius is evaluated taking into account the uncertainties from different sources, as the extrapolation to the static point, the choice of the class of fitting functions and the range of the data sample. This error is shown to be even orders of magnitude larger than commonly assumed.

Soft rescattering in the timelike proton form factor within a spacetime scheme

The annihilation of a lepton pair into a proton-antiproton pair, and the reverse process, allow for a measurement of the timelike proton form factors. This work aims at studying the corrections due to direct soft interactions between the proton and the antiproton before their annihilation or after their creation. The analysis is carried on in the spacetime formalism used by us in a series of recent works on timelike FFs. In particular the effect of $\bar{p}p$ annihilation into many-meson states is considered. We expect it to determine similar real and imaginary parts for the form factor near the $\bar{p}p$ channel threshold. We also discuss the possibility that the timelike FF differ by a phase in the hadron pair production and annihilation.

Two-photon exchange: myth and history

After recalling the arguments for possible excess of two-photon contribution over $α$-counting, model independent statements about the consequences on the observables will be given. The relevant experimental data are discussed: (polarized and unpolarized) electron and positron elastic scattering on the proton, as well as annihilation data. A reanalysis of unpolarized electron-proton elastic scattering data is presented in terms of the electric to magnetic form factor squared ratio. This observable is in principle more robust against experimental correlations and global normalizations. The present analysis shows indeed that it is a useful quantity that contains reliable and coherent information. The comparison with the ratio extracted from the measurement of the longitudinal to transverse polarization of the recoil proton in polarized electron-proton scattering shows that the results are compatible. These results bring a decisive piece of information in the controversy on the deviation of the proton form factors from the dipole dependence.

Radiative corrections to elastic proton-electron scattering measured in coincidence

The differential cross section for elastic scattering of protons on electrons at rest is calculated taking into account the QED radiative corrections to the leptonic part of interaction. These model-independent radiative corrections arise due to emission of the virtual and real soft and hard photons as well as to vacuum polarization. We analyze an experimental setup when both the final particles are recorded in coincidence and their energies are determined within some uncertainties. The kinematics, the cross section, and the radiative corrections are calculated and numerical results are presented.

The fourth dimension of the nucleon structure: spacetime analysis of the timelike electromagnetic proton form factors

As well known, spacelike proton form factors expressed in the Breit frame may be interpreted as the Fourier transform of static space distributions of electric charge and current. In particular, the electric form factor is simply the Fourier transform of the charge distribution $F(q)=\int e^{i\vec q \cdot \vec r} ρ(r)d^3r$. We don't have an intuitive interpretation of the same level of simplicity for the proton timelike form factor appearing in the reactions $e^+e^-\leftrightarrow \bar{p}p$. However, one may suggest that in the center of mass (CM) frame, where $q_μx^μ=qt$, a timelike electric form factor is the Fourier transform $F(q) =\int e^{iqt} R(t)dt$ of a function $R(t)$ expressing how the electric properties of the forming (or annihilating) proton-antiproton pair evolve in time. Here we analyze in depth this idea, show that the functions $ρ(r)$ and $R(t)$ can be formally written as the time and space integrals of a unique correlation function depending on both time and space coordinates.

Antiproton--proton annihilation into pion pairs within effective meson theory

Antiproton--proton annihilation into light mesons is revisited in the few GeV energy domain, in view of a global description of the existing data. An effective meson model is developed, with mesonic and baryonic degrees od freedom in $s$, $t$, and $u$ channels. Regge factors are added to reproduce the proper energy behavior and the forward and backward peaked behavior. A comparison with existing data and predictions for angular distributions and energy dependence are done for charged and neutral pion pair production.

Periodic interference structures in the time-like proton form factor

An intriguing and elusive feature of the timelike hadron form factor is the possible presence of an imaginary part associated to rescattering processes. We find evidence of that in the recent and precise data on the proton timelike form factor measured by the BABAR collaboration. By plotting these data as a function of the 3-momentum of the relative motion of the final proton and antiproton, a systematic sinusoidal modulation is highlighted in the near-threshold region. Our analysis attributes this pattern to rescattering processes at a relative distance of 0.7-1.5 fm between the centers of the forming hadrons. This distance implies a large fraction of inelastic processes in $\bar{p}p$ interactions, and a large imaginary part in the related $e^+e^- \rightarrow \bar{p}p$ reaction because of unitarity.

Possible existence of a meson ($s\bar s$) S = 0 at M $\approx$ 762 MeV

The possible existence of a ($ s\bar s$) S = 0 meson at M $\approx$ 762 MeV is discussed through a critical analysis of the existing data. Different experimental results are considered and show the possibility that the presence of such meson is not excluded by the data, but may be hidden by more excited mesons at nearby masses.

Are narrow unflavoured mesons a signature of new physics?

New data of narrow low mass unflavoured mesonic structures are presented. A table of these exotic masses is obtained adding previously published data. The mass sequence shows a significant coupling of some of these clusters with stable hadrons: pion, nucleon, and deuteron. Indeed this coupling allows to reproduce rather well the masses of exotic narrow baryons and dibaryons. A discussion is presented to suggest a possible interpretation of these exotic hadronic structures.

Charge asymmetry and symmetry properties

Applying general symmetry properties of electromagnetic interaction, information from electron proton elastic scattering data can be related to charge asymmetry in the annihilation channels $e^++e^-\leftrightarrow \bar p + p$ and to the ratio of the cross section of elastic electron and positron scattering on the proton. A compared analysis of the existing data allows to draw conclusions on the reaction mechanism.

We briefly summarize the status with electromagnetic nucleon form factors, and give in this framework, arguments to study the angular dependence of the differential cross section and single-spin polarization phenomena (polarized target or polarized beam) in $\bar{p}+{p}\to \ell^++\ell^-$, in view of the availability of future antiproton beams.
