Affine Nash groups over real closed fields

We prove that a semialgebraically connected affine Nash group over a real closed field R is Nash isogenous to the semialgebraically connected component of the group H(R) of R-points of some algebraic group H defined over R. In the case when R is the field of real numbers this result was claimed in the paper "Groups definable in local fields and pseudofinite fields", Israel J. Math. 85 (1994) by the same two authors, but a mistake in the proof was recently found, and the new proof we obtained has the advantage of being valid over an arbitrary real closed field. We also extend the result to not necessarily connected affine Nash groups over arbitrary real closed fields.

A note on generically stable measures and fsg groups

We prove that if μis a generically stable stable measure in a first order theory with NIP and mu(ϕ(x,b)) = 0 for all b, then μ^{(n)}(\exists y(ϕ(x_1,y)\wedge ... \wedge ϕ(x_n,y))) = 0. We deduce that if G is an fsg grooup then a definable subset X of G is generic just if every translate of X does not fork over \emptyset.

Generically stable and smooth measures in NIP theories

We study stable like behaviour in first order theories without the independence property. We introduce generically stable measures, give characterizatiions, and show their ubiquity. We also introduce generic compact domination. We also prove the approximate definability of arbitrary Borel probability measures on definable sets in the real and p-adic fields.

On finite imaginaries

We study finite imaginaries in certain valued fields, and prove a conjecture of Cluckers and Denef.

Motivic Poisson summation

We develop a "motivic integration" version of the Poisson summation formula for function fields, with values in the Grothendieck ring of definable exponential sums. We also study division algebras over the function field, and obtain relations among the motivic Fourier transforms of a test function at different completions. We use these to prove, in a special case, a motivic version of a theorem of Deligne-Kazhdan-Vigneras.

On NIP and invariant measures

We study forking, Lascar strong types, Keisler measures and definable groups, under an assumption of $NIP$ (not the independence property), continuing aspects of math.LO/0607442. Among key results are: (i) if $p = tp(b/A)$ does not fork over $A$ then the Lascar strong type of $b$ over $A$ coincides with the compact strong type of $b$ over $A$ and any global nonforking extension of $p$ is Borel definable over $bdd(A)$ (ii) analogous statements for Keisler measures and definable groups, including the fact that $G^{000} = G^{00}$ for $G$ definably amenable, (iii) definitions, characterizations and properties of "generically stable" types and groups (iv) uniqueness of translation invariant Keisler measures on groups with finitely satisfiable generics (vi) A proof of the compact domination conjecture for definably compact commutative groups in $o$-minimal expansions of real closed fields.

On central extensions and definably compact groups in o-minimal structures

We prove several structural results on definably compact groups G in o-minimal expansions of real closed fields, such as (i) G is definably an almost direct product of a semisimple group and a commutative group, and (ii) the group (G, .) is elementarily equivalent to (G/G^00, .). We also prove results on the internality of finite covers of G in an o-minimal environment, as well as the full compact domination conjecture. These results depend on key theorems about the interpretability of central and finite extensions of definable groups, in the o-minimal context. These methods and others also yield interpretability results for universal covers of arbitrary definable real Lie groups, from which we can deduce the semialgebraicity of finite covers of Lie groups such as SL(2,R).

Difference fields and descent in algebraic dynamics - I

We draw a connection between the model-theoretic notions of modularity (or one-basedness), orthogonality and internality, as applied to difference fields, and questions of descent in in algebraic dynamics. In particular we prove in any dimension a strong dynamical version of Northcott's theorem for function fields, answering a question of Szpiro and Tucker and generalizing a theorem of Baker's for the projective line. The paper comes in three parts. This first part contains an exposition some of the main results of the model theory of difference fields, and their immediate connection to questions of descent in algebraic dynamics. We present the model-theoretic notion of internality in a context that does not require a universal domain with quantifier-elimination. We also note a version of canonical heights that applies well beyond polarized algebraic dynamics. Part II sharpens the structure theory to arbitrary base fields and constructible maps where in part I we emphasize finite base change and correspondences. Part III will include precise structure theorems related to the Galois theory considered here, and will enable a sharpening of the descent results for non-modular dynamics.

Difference fields and descent in algebraic dynamics, II

This second part of the paper strengthens the descent theory described in the first part to rational maps, arbitrary base fields, and dynamics given by correspondences. We obtain in particular a decomposition of any difference field extension into a tower of finite, field-internal and one-based difference field extensions. This is needed in order to obtain the "dynamical Northcott" Theorem 1.11 of Part I in sharp form.

Stable domination and independence in algebraically closed valued fields

We seek to create tools for a model-theoretic analysis of types in algebraically closed valued fields (ACVF). We give evidence to show that a notion of 'domination by stable part' plays a key role. In Part A, we develop a general theory of stably dominated types, showing they enjoy an excellent independence theory, as well as a theory of definable types and germs of definable functions. In Part B, we show that the general theory applies to ACVF. Over a sufficiently rich base, we show that every type is stably dominated over its image in the value group. For invariant types over any base, stable domination coincides with a natural notion of `orthogonality to the value group'. We also investigate other notions of independence, and show that they all agree, and are well-behaved, for stably dominated types. One of these is used to show that every type extends to an invariant type; definable types are dense. Much of this work requires the use of imaginary elements. We also show existence of prime models over reasonable bases, possibly including imaginaries.

Groups, measures, and the NIP

We discuss measures, invariant measures on definable groups, and genericity, often in an NIP (failure of the independence property) environment. We complete the proof of the third author's conjectures relating definably compact groups $G$ in saturated $o$-minimal structures to compact Lie groups. We also prove some other structural results about such $G$, for example the existence of a left invariant finitely additive probability measure on definable subsets of $G$. We finally introduce a new notion "compact domination" (domination of a definable set by a compact space) and raise some new conjectures in the $o$-minimal case.

Integration in valued fields

We develop a theory of integration over valued fields of residue characteristic zero. In particular we obtain new and base-field independent foundations for integration over local fields of large residue characteristic, extending results of Denef,Loeser, Cluckers. The method depends on an analysis of definable sets up to definable bijections. We obtain a precise description of the Grothendieck semigroup of such sets in terms of related groups over the residue field and value group. This yields new invariants of all definable bijections, as well as invariants of measure preserving bijections.

A question of van den Dries and a theorem of Lipshitz and Robinson: Not everything is standard

We use a new construction of an o-minimal structure, due to Lipshitz and Robinson, to answer a question of van den Dries regarding the relationship between arbitrary o-minimal expansions of real closed fields and structures over the real numbers. We write a first order sentence which is true in the Lipshitz-Robinson structure but fails in any possible interpretation over the field of real numbers.

Generalizations of Kochen and Specker's Theorem and the Effectiveness of Gleason's Theorem

Kochen and Specker's theorem can be seen as a consequence of Gleason's theorem and logical compactness. Similar compactness arguments lead to stronger results about finite sets of rays in Hilbert space, which we also prove by a direct construction. Finally, we demonstrate that Gleason's theorem itself has a constructive proof, based on a generic, finite, effectively generated set of rays, on which every quantum state can be approximated.

The uncountable spectra of countable theories

Let T be a complete, first-order theory in a finite or countable language having infinite models. Let I(T,kappa) be the number of isomorphism types of models of T of cardinality κ. We denote by μ(respectively \hatμ) the number of cardinals (respectively infinite cardinals) less than or equal to κ. We prove that I(T,κ), as a function of κ> \aleph_0, is the minimum of 2^κ and one of the following functions: 1. 2^κ; 2. the constant function 1; 3. |\hatμ^n/{\sim_G}|-|(\hatμ- 1)^n/{\sim_G}| if \hatμ<ωfor some 1 = ωsome group G <= Sym(n); 4. the constant function \beth_2; 5. \beth_{d+1}(μ) for some infinite, countable ordinal d; 6. \sum_{i=1}^d Γ(i) where d is an integer greater than 0 (the depth of T) and Γ(i) is either \beth_{d-i-1}(μ^{\hatμ}) or \beth_{d-i}(μ^{σ(i)} + α(i)), where σ(i) is either 1, \aleph_0 or \beth_1, and α(i) is 0 or \beth_2; the first possibility for Γ(i) can occur only when d-i > 0.
