The Image of Functor Morphing

Functor morphing provides a method to translate complex representations of automorphism groups of finite modules over finite rings to representations of automorphism groups of functors in some abelian category. In this paper we give an explicit criterion for a representation to be in the image of functor morphing using the action of parabolic subgroups. We then demonstrate this criterion on Borel groups of finite fields.

Functor morphing and representations of automorphism groups of modules

We introduce a strategy to study irreducible representations of automorphism groups of finite modules over local rings. We prove that these automorphism groups fit in a hierarchy that facilitates a stratification of their irreducible representations in terms of smaller building blocks using symmetric monoidal categories and invariant theory.

Invariants of r-spin TQFTs and non-semisimplicity

For a positive integer r, an r-spin topological quantum field theory is a 2-dimensional TQFT with tangential structure given by the r-fold cover of SO_2 . In particular, such a TQFT assigns a scalar invariant to every closed r-spin surface Sigma. Given a sequence of scalars indexed by the set of diffeomorphism classes of all such Sigma, we construct a symmetric monoidal category C and a C-valued r-spin TQFT which reproduces the given sequence. We also determine when such a sequence arises from a TQFT valued in an abelian category with finite-dimensional Hom spaces. In particular, we construct TQFTs with values in super vector spaces that can distinguish all diffeomorphism classes of r-spin surfaces, and we show that the associated algebras are necessarily non-semisimple.

Comparison of equivariant cohomological dimensions

We compare three definitions of the equivariant cohomological dimension of a group with operators, coming from Takasu, Adamson and Bredon relative group cohomologies, giving examples of strict inequality in all cases where it can occur. We prove and make use of Stallings--Swan type results which characterise the groups of equivariant cohomological dimension one. Some of our examples are relevant to Farber's problem which asks for an algebraic characterisation of the topological complexity of discrete groups. In particular, the topological complexity of a group is not in general given by a relative cohomological dimension of the product relative to the diagonal subgroup.

Invariants that are covering spaces and their Hopf algebras

In a previous paper by the author a universal ring of invariants for algebraic structures of a given type was constructed. This ring is a polynomial algebra that is generated by certain trace diagrams. It was shown that this ring admits the structure of a rational positive self adjoint Hopf algebra (abbreviated rational PSH-algebra), and was conjectured that it always admits a lattice that is a PSH-algebra, a structure that was introduced by Zelevinsky. In this paper we answer this conjecture, showing that the universal ring of invariants splits as the tensor product of rational PSH-algebras that are either polynomial algebras in a single variable, or admit a lattice that is a PSH-algebra. We do so by considering diagrams as topological spaces, and using tools from the theory of covering spaces. As an application we derive a formula that connects Kronecker coefficients with finite index subgroups of free groups and representations of their Weyl groups, and a formula for the number of conjugacy classes of finite index subgroup in a finitely generated group that admits a surjective homomorphism onto the group of integers.

Existence of integral Hopf orders in twists of group algebras

We find a group-theoretical condition under which a twist of a group algebra, in Movshev's way, admits an integral Hopf order. Let $K$ be a (large enough) number field with ring of integers $R$. Let $G$ be a finite group and $M$ an abelian subgroup of $G$ of central type. Consider the twist $J$ for $K\hspace{-0.8pt}G$ afforded by a non-degenerate $2$-cocycle on the character group $\widehat{M}$. We show that if there is a Lagrangian decomposition $\widehat{M} \simeq L \times \widehat{L}$ such that $L$ is contained in a normal abelian subgroup $N$ of $G$, then the twisted group algebra $(K\hspace{-0.8pt}G)_J$ admits a Hopf order $X$ over $R$. The Hopf order $X$ is constructed as the $R$-submodule generated by the primitive idempotents of $K\hspace{-1.1pt}N$ and the elements of $G$. It is indeed a Hopf order of $K\hspace{-0.8pt}G$ such that $J^{\pm 1} \in X \otimes_R X$. Furthermore, we give some criteria for this Hopf order to be unique. We illustrate this construction with several families of examples. As an application, we provide a further example of simple and semisimple complex Hopf algebra that does not admit integral Hopf orders.

Interpolations of monoidal categories and algebraic structures by invariant theory

In a previous work by the author it was shown that every finite dimensional algebraic structure over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero K gives rise to a character $K[X]_{aug}\to K$, where $K[X]_aug$ is a commutative Hopf algebra that encodes scalar invariants of structures. This enabled us to think of some characters $K[X]_{aug}\to K$ as algebraic structures with closed orbit. In this paper we study structures in general symmetric monoidal categories, and not only in $Vec_K$. We show that every character $\chi : K[X]_{aug}\to K$ arises from such a structure, by constructing a category $C_{\chi}$ that is analogous to the universal construction from TQFT. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for a given character to arise from a structure in an abelian category with finite dimensional hom-spaces. We call such characters good characters. We show that if $\chi$ is good then $C_{\chi}$ is abelian and semisimple, and that the set of good characters forms a K-algebra. This gives us a way to interpolate algebraic structures, and also symmetric monoidal categories, in a way that generalizes Deligne's categories $Rep(S_t)$, $Rep(GL_t(K))$, $Rep(O_t)$, and also some of the symmetric monoidal categories introduced by Knop. We also explain how one can recover the recent construction of 2 dimensional TQFT of Khovanov, Ostrik, and Kononov, by the methods presented here. We give new examples, of interpolations of the categories $Rep(Aut_{O}(M))$ where $O$ is a discrete valuation ring with a finite residue field, and M is a finite module over it. We also generalize the construction of wreath products with $S_t$, which was introduced by Knop.

Universal rings of invariants

Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Algebraic structures of a specific type (e.g. algebras or coalgebras) on a given vector space $W$ over $K$ can be encoded as points in an affine space $U(W)$. This space is equipped with a $\text{GL}(W)$ action, and two points define isomorphic structures if and only if they lie in the same orbit. This leads to study the ring of invariants $K[U(W)]^{\text{GL}(W)}$. We describe this ring by generators and relations. We then construct combinatorially a commutative ring $K[X]$ which specializes to all rings of invariants of the form $K[U(W)]^{\text{GL}(W)}$. We show that the commutative ring $K[X]$ has a richer structure of a Hopf algebra with additional coproduct, grading, and an inner product which makes it into a rational PSH-algebra, generalizing a structure introduced by Zelevinsky. We finish with a detailed study of $K[X]$ in the case of an algebraic structure consisting of a single endomorphism, and show how the rings of invariants $K[U(W)]^{\text{GL}(W)}$ can be calculated explicitly from $K[X]$ in this case.

An inductive approach to representations of general linear groups over compact discrete valuation rings

In his seminal Lecture Notes in Mathematics published in 1981, Andrey Zelevinsky introduced a new family of Hopf algebras which he called {\em PSH-algebras}. These algebras were designed to capture the representation theory of the symmetric groups and of classical groups over finite fields. The gist of this construction is to translate representation-theoretic operations such as induction and restriction and their parabolic variants to algebra and coalgebra operations such as multiplication and comultiplication. The Mackey formula, for example, is then reincarnated as the Hopf axiom on the algebra side. In this paper we take substantial steps to adapt these ideas for general linear groups over compact discrete valuation rings. We construct an analogous bialgebra that contains a large PSH-algebra that extends Zelevinsky's algebra for the case of general linear groups over finite fields. We prove several base change results relating algebras over extensions of discrete valuation rings.

Equivariant dimensions of groups with operators

Let $\pi$ be a group equipped with an action of a second group $G$ by automorphisms. We define the equivariant cohomological dimension ${\sf cd}_G(\pi)$, the equivariant geometric dimension ${\sf gd}_G(\pi)$, and the equivariant Lusternik-Schnirelmann category ${\sf cat}_G(\pi)$ in terms of the Bredon dimensions and classifying space of the family of subgroups of the semi-direct product $\pi\rtimes G$ consisting of sub-conjugates of $G$. When $G$ is finite, we extend theorems of Eilenberg-Ganea and Stallings-Swan to the equivariant setting, thereby showing that all three invariants coincide (except for the possibility of a $G$-group $\pi$ with ${\sf cat}_G(\pi)={\sf cd}_G(\pi)=2$ and ${\sf gd}_G(\pi)=3$). A main ingredient is the purely algebraic result that the cohomological dimension of any finite group with respect to any family of proper subgroups is greater than one. This implies a Stallings-Swan type result for families of subgroups which do not contain all finite subgroups.

On isotypic decompositions for non-semisimple Hopf algebras

In this paper we study the isotypic decomposition of the regular module of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For a semisimple Hopf algebra, the idempotents realizing the isotypic decomposition can be explicitly expressed in terms of characters and the Haar integral. In this paper we investigate Hopf algebras with the Chevalley property, which are not necessarily semisimple. We find explicit expressions for idempotents in terms of Hopf-algebraic data, where the Haar integral is replaced by the regular character of the dual Hopf algebra. For a large class of Hopf algebras, these are shown to form a complete set of orthogonal idempotents. We give an example which illustrates that the Chevalley property is crucial.

Invariant rings and representations of the symmetric groups

In this paper we study invariant rings arising in the study of finite dimensional algebraic structures. The rings we encounter are graded rings of the form $K[U]^{\Gamma}$ where $\Gamma$ is a product of general linear groups over a field $K$ of characteristic zero, and $U$ is a finite dimensional rational representation of $\Gamma$. We will calculate the Hilbert series of such rings using the representation theory of the symmetric groups and Schur-Weyl duality. We focus on the case where $U=\text{End}(W^{\oplus k})$ and $\Gamma = \text{GL}(W)$ and on the case where $U=\text{End}(V\otimes W)$ and $\Gamma = \text{GL}(V)\times \text{GL}(W)$, though the methods introduced here can also be applied in more general framework. For the two aforementioned cases we calculate the Hilbert function of the ring of invariants in terms of Littlewood-Richardson and Kronecker coefficients. When the vector spaces are of dimension 2 we also give an explicit calculation of this Hilbert series.

Geometric perspective on Nichols algebras

We formulate the generation of finite dimensional pointed Hopf algebras by group-like elements and skew-primitives in geometric terms. This is done through a more general study of connected and coconnected Hopf algebras inside a braided fusion category $\mathcal{C}$. We describe such Hopf algebras as orbits for the action of a reductive group on an affine variety. We then show that the closed orbits are precisely the orbits of Nichols algebras, and that all other algebras are therefore deformations of Nichols algebras. For the case where the category $\mathcal{C}$ is the category $^G_G\mathcal{YD}$ of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over a finite group $G$, this reduces the question of generation by group-like elements and skew-primitives to a geometric question about rigidity of orbits. Comparing the results of Angiono Kochetov and Mastnak, this gives a new proof for the generation of finite dimensional pointed Hopf algebras with abelian groups of group-like elements by skew-primitives and group-like elements. We show that if $V$ is a simple object in $\mathcal{C}$ and $\text{B}(V)$ is finite dimensional, then $\text{B}(V)$ must be rigid. We also show that a non-rigid Nichols algebra can always be deformed to a pre-Nichols algebra or a post-Nichols algebra which is isomorphic to the Nichols algebra as an object of the category $\mathcal{C}$.

Non-existence of Hopf orders for a twist of the alternating and symmetric groups

We prove the non-existence of Hopf orders over number rings for two families of complex semisimple Hopf algebras. They are constructed as Drinfel'd twists of group algebras for the following groups: $A_n$, the alternating group on $n$ elements, with $n \geq 5$; and $S_{2m}$, the symmetric group on $2m$ elements, with $m \geq 4$ even. The twist for $A_n$ arises from a $2$-cocycle on the Klein four-group contained in $A_4$. The twist for $S_{2m}$ arises from a $2$-cocycle on a subgroup generated by certain transpositions which is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_2^m$. This provides more examples of complex semisimple Hopf algebras that can not be defined over number rings. As in the previous family known, these Hopf algebras are simple.

Hopf cocycle deformations and invariant theory

For a given finite dimensional Hopf algebra $H$ we describe the set of all equivalence classes of cocycle deformations of $H$ as an affine variety, using methods of geometric invariant theory. We show how our results specialize to the Universal Coefficients Theorem in the case of a group algebra, and we also give examples from other families of Hopf algebras, including dual group algebras and Bosonizations of Nichols algebras. In particular, we use the methods developed here to classify the cocycle deformations of a dual pointed Hopf algebra associated to the symmetric group on three letters. We also give an example of a cocycle deformation over a dual group algebra, which has only rational invariants, but which is not definable over the rational field. This differs from the case of group algebras, in which every two-cocycle is equivalent to one which is definable by its invariants.

Adams operations and symmetries of representation categories

Adams operations are the natural transformations of the representation ring functor on the category of finite groups, and they are one way to describe the usual lambda-ring structure on these rings. From the representation-theoretical point of view, they codify some of the symmetric monoidal structure of the representation category. We show that the monoidal structure on the category alone, regardless of the particular symmetry, determines all the odd Adams operations. On the other hand, we give examples to show that monoidal equivalences do not have to preserve the second Adams operations and to show that monoidal equivalences that preserve the second Adams operations do not have to be symmetric. Along the way, we classify all possible symmetries and all monoidal autoequivalences of representation categories of finite groups.

A variant of Harish-Chandra functors

Harish-Chandra induction and restriction functors play a key role in the representation theory of reductive groups over finite fields. In this paper, extending earlier work of Dat, we introduce and study generalisations of these functors which apply to a wide range of finite and profinite groups, typical examples being compact open subgroups of reductive groups over non-archimedean local fields. We prove that these generalisations are compatible with two of the tools commonly used to study the (smooth, complex) representations of such groups, namely Clifford theory and the orbit method. As a test case, we examine in detail the induction and restriction of representations from and to the Siegel Levi subgroup of the symplectic group Sp(4) over a finite local principal ideal ring of length two. We obtain in this case a Mackey-type formula for the composition of these induction and restriction functors which is a perfect analogue of the well-known formula for the composition of Harish-Chandra functors. In a different direction, we study representations of the Iwahori subgroup I(n) of GL(n,F), where F is a non-archimedean local field. We establish a bijection between the set of irreducible representations of I(n) and tuples of primitive irreducible representations of smaller Iwahori subgroups, where primitivity is defined by the vanishing of suitable restriction functors.
