WFI J2026-4536 and WFI J2033-4723: Two New Quadruple Gravitational Lenses

We report the discovery of two new gravitationally lensed quasars, WFI J2026-4536 and WFI J2033-4723, at respective source redshifts of z=2.23 and z=1.66. Both systems are quadruply imaged and have similar PG1115-like image configurations. WFI J2026-4536 has a maximum image separation of 1.4", a total brightness of g = 16.5, and a relatively simple lensing environment, while WFI J2033-4723 has a maximum image separation of 2.5", an estimated total brightness of g = 17.9, and a more complicated environment of at least six galaxies within 20". The primary lensing galaxies are detected for both systems after PSF subtraction. Several of the broadband flux ratios for the two lenses show a strong (0.1-0.4 mags) trend with wavelength, suggesting either microlensing or differential extinction through the lensing galaxy. For WFI J2026-4536, the total quasar flux has dimmed by 0.1 mag in the blue but only half as much in the red over three months, suggestive of microlensing-induced variations. For WFI J2033-4723, resolved spectra of some of the quasar components reveal emission line flux ratios that agree better with the macromodel predictions than either the broadband or continuum ratios, also indicative of microlensing. The predicted differential time delays for WFI J2026-4536 are short, ranging from 1-2 weeks for the long delay, but are longer for WFI J2033-4723, ranging from 1-2 months. Both systems hold promise for future monitoring campaigns aimed at microlensing or time delay studies.

Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectroscopy of Star-Forming Galaxies

The Palomar Integral Field Spectrograph was used to probe a variety of environments in nine nearby galaxies that span a range of morphological types, luminosities, metallicities, and infrared-to-blue ratios. For the first time, near-infrared spectroscopy was obtained for nuclear or bright HII regions in star-forming galaxies over two spatial dimensions (5.7"x10.0") in the [FeII] (1.257um), [FeII] (1.644um), Paschen beta (1.282um), H2 (2.122um), and Brackett gamma (2.166um) transition lines. These data yield constraints on various characteristics of the star-forming episodes in these regions, including their strength, maturity, spatial variability, and extinction. The HII regions stand out from the nuclei. Unlike observations of nuclear regions, HII region near-infrared observations do not show a spatial coincidence of the line and continuum emission; the continuum and line maps of HII regions usually show distinct and sometimes spatially-separated morphologies. Gauging from Paschen beta and Brackett gamma equivalent widths and luminosities, the HII regions have younger episodes of star formation than the nuclei and more intense radiation fields. Near-infrared line ratio diagnostics suggest that HII regions have "purer" starbursting properties. The correlation between ionizing photon density and mid-infrared color is consistent with the star formation activity level being higher for HII regions than for nuclei. And though the interpretation is complicated, on a purely empirical basis the HII regions show lower Fe1+ abundances than nuclei by an order of magnitude.

The Evolution of the Distribution of Star Formation Rates in Galaxies

A large deep and nearly complete B<24.5 redshift sample is used to measure the change in distribution function of the stellar mass production rate in individual galaxies with redshift. The evolution of the star formation rate distribution with redshift is interpreted in terms of the history of spiral galaxy formation, with the disk component modelled as a single evolving entity, and the characteristic timescales, luminosities, and epochs varying according to galaxy type. The more massive forming galaxies seen at z=1 to 3 are identified as earlier type spirals, whose star formation rates are initially high and then decline rapidly at z<1, while for later type spirals and smaller mass irregulars the mass formation rates at z<1 are lower, and the formation process persists to redshifts much closer to the present epoch. We find that these models can be consistent with the data and fit well into a broad picture of other recent results if qnought=0.02 and many of the disks begin their growth at z<<3, but that they predict too many bright star formers at high z in flat universes.

Galaxies at z>4.5

We present the results of ground-based and HST imaging studies targeted on z>4.5 quasar fields. High-redshift galaxies identified in deep narrow-band Lyman alpha images of the fields surrounding the quasars BR1202-0725 (z=4.694) and BR2237-0607 (z=4.558) have been confirmed with follow-up spectroscopy using the LRIS spectrograph on the Keck 10m telescope. These high-redshift galaxies are typically only moderately luminous objects and their sub-L* magnitudes imply star formation rates of only a few solar masses per year. For BR1202-0725 tip-tilt imaging in Lyman alpha at the UH 2.2m telescope and deep narrow-band IR imaging in [OII] at CFHT reveals a complex and structured system which may be merging to produce the host galaxy of the quasar. For BR2237-0607 the Lyman-alpha-emitting galaxies show the strong Lyman alpha emission and weak continuum expected for objects before substantial chemical enrichment and consequent dust formation and extinction has occurred. These objects appear to be galaxies in their first outburst of star formation.

Detection of a Lyman-alpha Emission-Line Companion to the z=4.69 QSO BR1202-0725

We report the detection of a nearby emission-line companion to the z=4.695 quasar BR1202-0725. Deep narrow-band exposures on this field from the UH 2.2 m show a Ly alpha flux of 1.5\times\ten{-16} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1}. High-resolution HST WFC2 imaging in the F814W filter band shows continuum structure near the emission position, at 2.6" NW of the quasar, corresponding to a projected separation of ~7.5 h^{-1} kpc for \qnought=0.5, where h=\hnought/100\kms Mpc^{-1}. We discuss possible explanations for the combined line and color properties. The ionization is most likely produced by the quasar, but if due to underlying star formation would require a star formation rate of ~7 h^2 solar masses per yr.
