Selective observation of enantiomeric chiral phonons in $α$-quartz

We report anomalous circularly polarized Raman spectra of phonons in right- and left-handed quartzes. The phonon branches splitting from the E-mode at a finite wavenumber were found to be chiral with mutually opposite angular momenta. Our analysis reveals the Raman selection rules for chiral phonons. We also find that the conservation of angular momentum should be satisfied between two photons and one chiral phonon in the Raman process. Furthermore, we experimentally proved that the helicity of phonons with a certain frequency and wavevector should be opposite in the other enantiomer.

Observation of low-frequency Raman peak in layered WTe$_2$

WTe$_2$ recently attracted considerable attention as a layered material exhibiting ferroelectricity, giant magnetoresistance, and pressure-induced superconductivity. In this study, we performed Raman spectroscopy on bulk WTe$_2$, including the unreported low frequency region. A novel Raman peak (P0) was found at approximately 9 cm$^{-1}$ in addition to the seven already known peaks. Furthermore, the angular and polarization dependence of the spectra revealed that the novel peak had $A_1$ symmetry. The existence of this novel peak is consistent with first principles calculations by another group. Our work paves the way for studying the low frequency vibration modes of atomic layer ferrolectric films.

Observation of quasi-elastic light scattering in BiFeO$_3$

We observed quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) in BiFeO$_3$ using Raman spectroscopy over a temperature range of 300-860 K. The QELS has two components: a narrow and broad component. The temperature dependence of the intensity and linewidth of the broad component differed below and beyond the Néel point, and the broad QELS may have a magnetic origin.
