Syntheses and First-Principles Calculations of the Pseudobrookite Compound AlTi2O5

We synthesize a new titanium-oxide compound AlTi2O5 with pseudobrookite-type structure. The formal valence of Ti is 3.5+ that is the same as the Magneli compound Ti4O7 and the spinel compound LiTi2O4. AlTi2O5 exhibits insulating behavior in resistivity. Using experimentally determined crystal structure, we perform the first-principles calculations for the electronic structures. Experimentally suggested random distribution of Al and Ti is not the origin of the insulating behavior. The Fermi surfaces for nonrandom AlTi2O5 show cylindrical shapes reflecting a layered structure, which indicates a possible nesting-driven order. Constructing a tight-binding model from the first-principles calculations, we calculate the spin and charge susceptibilities using the random phase approximation. We suggest possible charge-density-wave state forming Ti3+ chains separated from each other by Ti4+ chains, similar to the low-temperature phase of Ti4O7.

Origin of in-plane anisotropic resistivity in the antiferromagnetic phase of Fe$_{1+x}$Te

Motivated by a recent experimental report on in-plane anisotropic resistivity in the double-striped antiferromagnetic phase of FeTe, we theoretically calculate in-plane resistivity by applying a memory function approach to the ordered phase. We find that the resistivity is larger along an antiferromagnetically ordered direction than along a ferromagnetically ordered one, consistent with experimental observation. The anisotropic results are mainly contributed from Drude weight, whose behavior is attributed to Fermi surface topology of the ordered phase.

Orbital-selective electronic excitations in iron arsenides revealed by simulated nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS) is a possible tool to detect charge excitations in electron systems. In addition, multipole transitions at high-momentum-transfer region open a new possibility to determine orbital-selective electronic excitations in multi-orbital itinerant 3d electron systems. As a theoretical example, we chose the antiferromagnetic state of iron arsenides and demonstrate that the orbital-selective excitations are detectable by choosing appropriate momentum transfer in NIXS. We propose that both NIXS and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering are complementary to each other for fully understanding the nature of orbital excitations in multi-orbital itinerant electron systems.

Memory function approach to in-plane anisotropic resistivity in the antiferromagnetic phase of iron arsenide superconductors

We theoretically examine anisotropy of in-plane resistivity in the striped antiferromagnetic phase of an iron arsenide superconductor by applying a memory function approach to the ordered phase with isotropic nonmagnetic impurity. We find that the anisotropy of the scattering rate is independent of carrier density when the topology of the Fermi surface is changed after the introduction of holes. On the other hand, the anisotropy of the Drude weight monotonically decreases reflecting the distortion of the Dirac Fermi surface and eventually leads to the reverse of anisotropy of resistivity, being consistent with experiment. The origin of the anisotropy is thus attributed to the interplay of impurity scattering and anisotropic electronic states.

Phonon-glass electron-crystal thermoelectric clathrates: Experiments and theory

Type-I clathrate compounds have attracted a great deal of interest in connection with the search for efficient thermoelectric materials. These compounds constitute networked cages consisting of nano-scale tetrakaidecahedrons (14 hedrons) and dodecahedrons (12 hedrons), in which the group 1 or 2 elements in the periodic table are encaged as the so-called rattling guest atom. It is remarkable that, though these compounds have crystalline cubic-structure, they exhibit glass-like phonon thermal conductivity over the whole temperature range depending on the states of rattling guest atoms in the tetrakaidecahedron. In addition, these compounds show unusual glass-like specific heats and THz-frequency phonon dynamics, providing a remarkable broad peak almost identical to those observed in topologically disordered amorphous materials or structural glasses, the so-called Boson peak. An efficient thermoelectric effect is realized in compounds showing these glass-like characteristics. This decade, a number of experimental works dealing with type-I clathrate compounds have been published. These are diffraction experiments, thermal and spectroscopic experiments in addition to those based on heat and electronic transport. These form the raw materials for this article based on advances this decade. The subject of this article involves interesting phenomena from the viewpoint of not only physics but also from the view point of the practical problem of elaborating efficient thermoelectric materials. This review presents a survey of a wide range of experimental investigations of type-I clathrate compounds, together with a review of theoretical interpretations of the peculiar thermal and dynamic properties observed in these materials.

Spin Dynamics and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering in Chromium with Commensurate Spin-Density Wave Order

We theoretically investigate spin dynamics and $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) of Chromium with commensurate spin-density wave (SDW) order, based on a multi-band Hubbard model composed of 3$d$ and 4$s$ orbitals. Obtaining the ground state with the SDW mean-field approximation, we calculate the dynamical transverse and longitudinal spin susceptibility by using random-phase approximation. We find that a collective spin-wave excitation seen in inelastic neutron scattering hardly damps up to $\sim$0.6 eV. Above the energy, the excitation overlaps individual particle-hole excitations as expected, leading to broad spectral weight. On the other hand, the collective spin-wave excitation in RIXS spectra has a tendency to be masked by large spectral weight coming from particle-hole excitations with various orbital channels. This is in contrast with inelastic neutron scattering, where only selected diagonal orbital channels contribute to the spectral weight. However, it may be possible to detect the spin-wave excitation in RIXS experiments in the future if resolution is high enough.

Analysis of Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering in Stripe-Ordered Nickelate

We analyze theoretically the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ni K edge in the stripe-ordered state of La_{2-x}Sr_xNiO_4 at x=1/3. In the calculation of RIXS spectra, the stripe-ordered ground state is described within the Hartree-Fock approximation by using a realistic tight-binding model for Ni3dγand O2p_{x, y} orbitals, and the electron correlations in the electronic excitation processes are taken into account within the random-phase approximation. The calculated RIXS spectrum shows a tail toward the low-energy region when the momentum transfer of photons equals the stripe vector Q, being consistent with a recent experimental result. The origin of this anomalous momentum dependence of RIXS spectra is discussed microscopically.

Significance of Off-Center Rattling for Emerging Low-lying THz Modes in type-I Clathrates

We show that the distinct differences of low-lying THz-frequency dynamics between type-I clathrates with on-center and off-center guest ions naturally follow from a theoretical model taking into account essential features of the dynamics of rattling guest ions. Our model analysis demonstrates the drastic change from the conventional dynamics shown by on-center systems to the peculiar dynamics of off-center systems in a unified manner. We claim that glass-like plateau thermal conductivities observed for off-center systems stem from the flattening of acoustic phonon dispersion in the regime |k|<|G|/4. The mechanism is applicable to other systems such as glasses or relaxers.

Topological and Transport Properties of Dirac Fermions in Antiferromagnetic Metallic Phase of Iron-Based Superconductors

We investigate Dirac fermions in the antifferomagnetic metallic state of iron-based superconduc- tors. Deriving an effective Hamiltonian for Dirac fermions, we reveal that there exist two Dirac cones carrying the same chirality, contrary to graphene, compensated by a Fermi surface with a quadratic energy dispersion as a consequence of a non-trivial topological property inherent in the band structure. We also find that the presence of the Dirac fermions gives the difference of sign- change temperatures between the Hall coefficient and the thermopower. This is consistent with available experimental data.

Glass-like Thermal-Transport in Symmetry-Broken Clathrates

We present the quantitative interpretation for the glass-like behavior of thermal conductivities $κ(T)$ for type-I clathrate compounds involving off-centered guest ions. It is shown that the dipole-dipole interaction generated in cage/guest-ion systems is crucial to reproduce the characteristics of thermal conductivities for these symmetry-broken clathrates. The above scenario also explains well the difference of $κ(T)$ between the $p$-type and the $n$-type $β$-BGS found recently by K. Suekuni et al. [Phys. Rev. B, 77 (2008) 235119.]

Interacting Dipoles in Type-I Clathrates: Why Glass-like though Crystal?

Almost identical thermal properties of type-I clathrate compounds to those of glasses follow naturally from the consideration that off-centered guest ions possess electric dipole moments. Local fields from neighbor dipoles create many potential minima in the configuration space. A theoretical analysis based on two-level tunneling states demonstrates that interacting dipoles are a key to quantitatively explain the glass-like behaviors of low-temperature thermal properties of type-I clathrate compounds with off-centered guest ions. From this analysis, we predict the existence of a glass transition.

Local edge modes in doped cuprates with checkerboard polaronic heterogeneity

We study a periodic polaronic system, which exhibits a nanoscale superlattice structure, as a model for hole-doped cuprates with checkerboard-like heterogeneity, as has been observed recently by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Within this model, the electronic and phononic excitations are investigated by applying an unrestricted Hartree-Fock and a random phase approximation (RPA) to a multiband Peierls-Hubbard Hamiltonian in two dimensions.

Fermi Arc of Metallic Diagonal Stripes in High Tc Cuprates

Spectral weight is investigated for metallic diagonal stripe state in two dimensional Hubbard model, and Fermi arc observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on LSCO is discussed. The Fermi arc coming from the mid-gap state of diagonal stripe appears near $(\fracπ{2},\fracπ{2})$ and equivalent position in the reciprocal space, and the gap opens below the mid-gap state. We show how these spectral weight structure depends on the phasing of stripes, i.e., site-centered or bond-centered stripes.

Phonon anomalies due to stripe collective modes in high T_c cuprates

Phonon anomalies observed in various high $T_c$ cuprates by neutron experiments are analyzed theoretically in terms of the stripe concept. The phonon self-energy correction is evaluated by taking into account the charge collective modes of stripes, giving rise to dispersion gap, or kink and shadow phonon modes at twice the wave number of spin stripe. These features coincide precisely with observations. The gapped branches of the phonon are found to be in-phase and out-of-phase oscillations relative to the charge collective mode.

Spin and charge excitations in incommensurate spin density waves

Collective excitations both for spin- and charge-channels are investigated in incommensurate spin density wave (or stripe) states on two-dimensional Hubbard model. By random phase approximation, the dynamical susceptibility χ(q,ω) is calculated for full range of (q,ω) with including all higher harmonics components. An intricate landscape of the spectra in χ(q,ω) is obtained. We discuss the anisotropy of the dispersion cones for spin wave excitations, and for the phason excitation related to the motion of the stripe line. Inelastic neutron experiments on Cr and its alloys and stripe states of underdoped cuprates are proposed.
