Theory of spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) and related phenomena

We review the recently discovered spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) and related effects from a theoretical point of view. The SMR is observed in bilayers of a magnetic insulator and a metal, in which spin currents aregenerated in the normal metal due to the spin Hall effect. The associated angular momentum transfer to the ferromagnetic layer and thereby the electrical resistance is modulated by the angle between the applied current and the magnetization direction. The SMR provides a convenient tool to non-invasively measure the magnetization direction and spin-transfer torque to an insulator. We introduce the minimal theoretical instruments to calculate the SMR, i.e. spin diffusion theory and quantum mechanical boundary conditions. This leads to a small set of parameters that can be fitted to experiments. We discuss the limitations of the theory as well as alternative mechanisms such as the ferromagnetic proximity effect and Rashba spin-orbit torques, and point out new developments related to the SMR.

Magnon instability driven by heat current in magnetic bilayers

We theoretically demonstrate that, in a ferromagnet/paramagnet bilayer, a magnon instability accompanied by a gigahertz microwave emission can be driven simply by means of a temperature bias. Employing many-body theory for investigating the effects of a phonon heat current on the magnon lifetime, we show that the magnon instability occurs upon the suppression of the Umklapp scattering at low temperatures, leading to microwave emission. The present finding provides crucial information about the interplay of spin current and heat current.

Anomalous Hall effect driven by dipolar spin waves in uniform ferromagnets

A new type of anomalous Hall effect is shown to arise from the interaction of conduction electrons with dipolar spin waves in ferromagnets. This effect exists even in homogeneous ferromagnets without relativistic spin-orbit coupling. The leading contribution to the Hall conductivity is proportional to the chiral spin correlation of dynamical spin textures and is physically understood in terms of the skew scattering by dipolar magnons.

Critical suppression of spin Seebeck effect by magnetic fields

The longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) in Pt/Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG) junction systems has been investigated at various magnetic fields and temperatures. We found that the LSSE voltage in a Pt/YIG-slab system is suppressed by applying high magnetic fields and this suppression is critically enhanced at low temperatures. The field-induced suppression of the LSSE in the Pt/YIG-slab system is too large at around room temperature to be explained simply by considering the effect of the Zeeman gap in magnon excitation. This result requires us to introduce magnon-frequency-dependent mechanism into the scenario of LSSE; low-frequency magnons dominantly contribute to the LSSE. The magnetic field dependence of the LSSE voltage was observed to change by changing the thickness of YIG, suggesting that the thermo-spin conversion by the low-frequency magnons is suppressed in thin YIG films due to the long characteristic lengths of such magnons.

A Holographic Realization of Ferromagnets

A holographic realization for ferromagnetic systems has been constructed. Owing to the holographic dictionary proposed on the basis of this realization, we obtained relevant thermodynamic quantities such as magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, and free energy. This holographic model reproduces the behavior of the mean field theory near the critical temperature. At low temperatures, the results automatically incorporate the contributions from spin wave excitations and conduction electrons.

Proximity-free enhancement of anomalous Nernst effects in metallic multilayers

The anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) has been investigated in alternately-stacked multilayer films comprising paramagnetic and ferromagnetic metals. We found that the ANE is enhanced with increasing the number of the paramagnet/ferromagnet interfaces with keeping the total thickness of the films constant, and that the enhancement appears even in the absence of magnetic proximity effects; similar behavior was observed not only in Pt/Fe multilayers but also in Au/Fe and Cu/Fe multilayers free from proximity ferromagnetism. This universal enhancement of the ANE in the metallic multilayers suggests the presence of unconventional interface-induced thermoelectric conversion in the Fe films attached to the paramagnets.

Sign of inverse spin Hall voltages generated by ferromagnetic resonance and temperature gradients in yttrium iron garnet|platinum bilayers

We carried out a concerted effort to determine the absolute sign of the inverse spin Hall effect voltage generated by spin currents injected into a normal metal. We focus on yttrium iron garnet (YIG)|platinum bilayers at room temperature, generating spin currents by microwaves and temperature gradients. We find consistent results for different samples and measurement setups that agree with theory. We suggest a right-hand-rule to define a positive spin Hall angle corresponding to with the voltage expected for the simple case of scattering of free electrons from repulsive Coulomb charges.

Generation of Spin Currents in the Skyrmion Phase of a Helimagnetic Insulator $\mathrm{Cu_2OSeO_3}$

We report spin-current generation related with skyrmion dynamics resonantly excited by a microwave in a helimagnetic insulator $\mathrm{Cu_2OSeO_3}$. A Pt layer was fabricated on $\mathrm{Cu_2OSeO_3}$ and voltage in the Pt layer was measured upon magnetic resonance of $\mathrm{Cu_2OSeO_3}$ to electrically detect injected spin currents via the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) in Pt. We found that ISHE-induced electromotive forces appear in the skyrmion phase of $\mathrm{Cu_2OSeO_3}$ as well as in the ferrimagnetic phase, which shows that magnetic skyrmions can contribute to the spin pumping effect.

Quantitative Temperature Dependence of Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effect at High Temperatures

This article reports temperature-dependent measurements of longitudinal spin Seebeck effects (LSSEs) in Pt/Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG)/Pt systems in a high temperature range from room temperature to above the Curie temperature of YIG. The experimental results show that the magnitude of the LSSE voltage in the Pt/YIG/Pt systems rapidly decreases with increasing the temperature and disappears above the Curie temperature. The critical exponent of the LSSE voltage in the Pt/YIG/Pt systems at the Curie temperature was estimated to be 3, which is much greater than that for the magnetization curve of YIG. This difference highlights the fact that the mechanism of the LSSE cannot be explained in terms of simple static magnetic properties in YIG.

Enhanced DC Spin Pumping into a Fluctuating Ferromagnet near Tc

A linear-response formulation of the dc spin pumping, i.e., a spin injection from a precessing ferromagnet into an adjacent spin sink, is developed in view of describing many-body effects caused by spin fluctuations in the spin sink. It is shown that, when an itinerant ferromagnet near Tc is used as the spin sink, the spin pumping is largely increased owing to the fluctuation enhancement of the spin conductance across the precessing ferromagnet/spin sink interface. As an example, the enhanced spin pumping from permalloy into nickel palladium alloy (Tc ~ 20K) is analyzed by means of a self-consistent renormalization scheme, and it is predicted that the enhancement can be as large as tenfold.

Enhancement of Spin Pumping in $\mathrm{Y_3Fe_5O_{12}/Pt/Ni_{81}Fe_{19}}$ Trilayer Film

We study spin pumping in a $\mathrm{Y_3Fe_5O_{12}(YIG)/Pt/Ni_{81}Fe_{19}(Py)}$ trilayer film by means of the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). When the ferromagnets are not excited simultaneously by a microwave, ISHE-induced voltage is of the opposite sign at each ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). The opposite sign is consistent with spin pumping of bilayer films. On the other hand, the voltage is of the same sign at each FMR when both the ferromagnets are excited simultaneously. Futhermore, the voltage greatly increases in magnitude. The observed voltage is unconventional; neither its sign nor magnitude can be expected from spin pumping of bilayer films. Control experiments show that the unconventional voltage is dominantly induced by spin pumping at the Py/Pt interface. Interaction between YIG and Py layers is a possible origin of the unconventional voltage.

Plasmonic generation of spin currents

Surface plasmons, free-electron collective oscillations in metallic nanostructures, provide abundant routes to manipulate light-electron interactions that can localize light energy and alter electromagnetic field distributions at subwavelength scales. The research field of plasmonics thus integrates nano-photonics with electronics. In contrast, electronics is also entering a new era of spintronics, where spin currents play a central role in driving devices. However, plasmonics and spin-current physics have so far been developed independently. Here, we demonstrate the generation of spin currents by surface plasmons. Using Au nanoparticles embedded in a Pt/BiY2Fe5O12 bilayer film, we show that, when the Au nanoparticles fulfill the surface-plasmon-resonance condition, spin currents are generated across the Pt/BiY2Fe5O12 interface. This plasmonic spin pumping results from nonequilibrium states of spins excited by surface-plasmon-induced evanescent electromagnetic fields in the BiY2Fe5O12 layer. Such plasmonic spin pumping will invigorate research on spin-current physics, and pave the way for future spin-based plasmonic devices.

Chiral spin-wave edge modes in dipolar magnetic thin films

Based on a linearized Landau-Lifshitz equation, we show that two-dimensional periodic allay of ferromagnetic particles coupled with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions supports chiral spin-wave edge modes, when subjected under the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the plane. The mode propagates along a one-dimensional boundary of the system in a unidirectional way and it always has a chiral dispersion within a band gap for spin-wave volume modes. Contrary to the well-known Damon-Eshbach surface mode, the sense of the rotation depends not only on the direction of the field but also on the strength of the field; its chiral direction is generally determined by the sum of the so-called Chern integers defined for spin-wave volume modes below the band gap. Using simple tight-binding descriptions, we explain how the magnetic dipolar interaction endows spin-wave volume modes with non-zero Chern integers and how their values will be changed by the field.

Quantitative study of the spin Hall magnetoresistance in ferromagnetic insulator/normal metal hybrids

We experimentally investigate and quantitatively analyze the spin Hall magnetoresistance effect in ferromagnetic insulator/platinum and ferromagnetic insulator/nonferromagnetic metal/platinum hybrid structures. For the ferromagnetic insulator we use either yttrium iron garnet, nickel ferrite or magnetite and for the nonferromagnet copper or gold. The spin Hall magnetoresistance effect is theoretically ascribed to the combined action of spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effect in the platinum metal top layer. It therefore should characteristically depend upon the orientation of the magnetization in the adjacent ferromagnet, and prevail even if an additional, nonferromagnetic metal layer is inserted between Pt and the ferromagnet. Our experimental data corroborate these theoretical conjectures. Using the spin Hall magnetoresistance theory to analyze our data, we extract the spin Hall angle and the spin diffusion length in platinum. For a spin mixing conductance of $4\times10^{14}\;\mathrm{Ω^{-1}m^{-2}}$ we obtain a spin Hall angle of $0.11\pm0.08$ and a spin diffusion length of $(1.5\pm0.5)\;\mathrm{nm}$ for Pt in our thin film samples.

Theory of the Spin Seebeck Effect

The spin Seebeck effect refers to the generation of a spin voltage caused by a temperature gradient in a ferromagnet, which enables the thermal injection of spin currents from the ferromagnet into an attached nonmagnetic metal over a macroscopic scale of several millimeters. The inverse spin Hall effect converts the injected spin current into a transverse charge voltage, thereby producing electromotive force as in the conventional charge Seebeck device. Recent theoretical and experimental efforts have shown that the magnon and phonon degrees of freedom play crucial roles in the spin Seebeck effect. In this article, we present the theoretical basis for understanding the spin Seebeck effect and briefly discuss other thermal spin effects.

Theory of spin Hall magnetoresistance

We present a theory of the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in multilayers made from an insulating ferromagnet F, such as yttrium iron garnet (YIG), and a normal metal N with spin-orbit interactions, such as platinum (Pt). The SMR is induced by the simultaneous action of spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects and therefore a non-equilibrium proximity phenomenon. We compute the SMR in F$|$N and F$|$N$|$F layered systems, treating N by spin-diffusion theory with quantum mechanical boundary conditions at the interfaces in terms of the spin-mixing conductance. Our results explain the experimentally observed spin Hall magnetoresistance in N$|$F bilayers. For F$|$N$|$F spin valves we predict an enhanced SMR amplitude when magnetizations are collinear. The SMR and the spin-transfer torques in these trilayers can be controlled by the magnetic configuration.

Thermally driven spin and charge currents in thin NiFe2O4/Pt films

We present results on the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) shown by semiconducting ferrimagnetic NiFe2O4/Pt films from room temperature down to 50K base temperature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of spin caloric effect in NiFe2O4 thin films. The temperature dependence of the conductivity has been studied in parallel to obtain information about the origin of the electric potentials detected at the Pt coverage of the ferrimagnet in order to distinguish the LSSE from the anomalous Nernst effect. Furthermore, the dependence of the LSSE on temperature gradients as well as the influence of an external magnetic field direction is investigated.

Mechanical generation of spin current by spin-rotation coupling

Spin-rotation coupling, which is responsible for angular momentum conversion between the electron spin and rotational deformations of elastic media, is exploited for generating spin current. This method requires neither magnetic moments nor spin-orbit interaction. The spin current generated in nonmagnets is calculated in presence of surface acoustic waves. We solve the spin diffusion equation, extended to include spin-rotation coupling, and find that larger spin currents can be obtained in materials with longer spin lifetimes. Spin accumulation induced on the surface is predicted to be detectable by time-resolved Kerr spectroscopy.
