Strain-engineering of the charge and spin-orbital interactions in Sr2IrO4

In the high spin-orbit coupled Sr2IrO4, the high sensitivity of the ground state to the details of the local lattice structure shows a large potential for the manipulation of the functional properties by inducing local lattice distortions. We use epitaxial strain to modify the Ir-O bond geometry in Sr2IrO4 and perform momentum-dependent Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) at the metal and at the ligand sites to unveil the response of the low energy elementary excitations. We observe that the pseudospin-wave dispersion for tensile-strained Sr2IrO4 films displays large softening along the [h,0] direction, while along the [h,h] direction it shows hardening. This evolution reveals a renormalization of the magnetic interactions caused by a strain-driven crossover from anisotropic to isotropic interactions between the magnetic moments. Moreover, we detect dispersive electron-hole pair excitations which shift to lower (higher) energies upon compressive (tensile) strain, manifesting a reduction (increase) in the size of the charge gap. This behavior shows an intimate coupling between charge excitations and lattice distortions in Sr2IrO4, originating from the modified hopping elements between the t2g orbitals. Our work highlights the central role played by the lattice degrees of freedom in determining both the pseudospin and charge excitations of Sr2IrO4 and provides valuable information towards the control of the ground state of complex oxides in the presence of high spin-orbit coupling.

Percolative Mott insulator-metal transition in doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

Despite many efforts to rationalize the strongly correlated electronic ground states in doped Mott insulators, the nature of the doping induced insulator to metal transition is still a subject under intensive investigation. Here we probe the nanoscale electronic structure of the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_{4-δ}$ with low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and find enhanced local density of states (LDOS) inside the Mott gap at the location of individual apical oxygen site defects. We visualize paths of enhanced conductance arising from the overlapping of defect states which induces finite LDOS at the Fermi level. By combining these findings with the typical spatial extension of isolated defects of about 2~nm, we show that the insulator to metal transition in Sr$_2$IrO$_{4-δ}$ is of percolative nature.

Lattice frustration in spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr3Ir2O7 at high pressure

The intertwined charge, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom could endow 5d compounds with exotic properties. Current interest is focused on electromagnetic interactions in these materials, whereas the important role of lattice geometry remains to be fully recognized. For this sake, we investigate pressure-induced phase transitions in the spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr3Ir2O7 with Raman, electrical resistance, and x-ray diffraction measurements. We reveal an interesting magnetic transition coinciding with a structural transition at 14.4 GPa, but without a concurrent insulator-metal transition. The conventional correlation between magnetic and Mott insulating states is thereby absent. The observed softening of the one-magnon mode can be explained by a reduced tetragonal distortion, while the actual magnetic transition is associated with tilting of the IrO6 octahedra. This work highlights the critical role of lattice frustration in determining the high-pressure phases of Sr3Ir2O7. The ability to control electromagnetic properties via manipulating the crystal structure with pressure promises a new way to explore new quantum states in spin-orbit Mott insulators.

Numerical Investigation of Spin Excitations in a Doped Spin Chain

We study the doping evolution of spin excitations in a 1D Hubbard model and its downfolded spin Hamiltonians, by using exact diagonalization combined with cluster perturbation theory. In all models, we observe hardening (softening) of spin excitations upon electron (hole) doping, which are reminiscent of recent experiments on 2D cuprate materials. We also find that the 3-site and even higher-order terms are crucial for the low-energy effective spin models to reproduce the magnetic spectra of doped Hubbard systems at a quantitative level. To interpret the numerical results, we further employ a strong coupling slave-boson mean-field theory. The mean-field theory provides an intuitive understanding of the overall compact support of dynamic spin structure factors, including the shift of zero-energy modes and change of spin excitation bandwidth with doping. Our results can serve as predictive benchmarks for future inelastic x-ray or neutron scattering experiments on doped 1D antiferromagnetic Mott insulators.

Spin-polaron ladder spectrum of the spin-orbit-induced Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_{4}$ probed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

The motion of doped electrons or holes in an antiferromagnetic lattice with strong on-site Coulomb interactions touches one of the most fundamental open problems in contemporary condensed matter physics. The doped charge may strongly couple to elementary spin excitations resulting in a dressed quasiparticle which is subject to confinement. This 'spin-polaron' possesses internal degrees of freedom with a characteristic 'ladder' excitation spectrum. Despite its fundamental importance for understanding high-temperature superconductivity, clear experimental spectroscopic signatures of these internal degrees of freedom are scarce. Here we present scanning tunneling spectroscopy results of the spin-orbit-induced Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_{4}$. Our spectroscopy data reveal distinct shoulder-like features for occupied and unoccupied states beyond a measured Mott gap of $Δ\approx620$~meV. Using the self-consistent Born approximation we assign the anomalies in the unoccupied states to the spin-polaronic ladder spectrum with excellent quantitative agreement and estimate the Coulomb repulsion $U$ = 2.05 ...2.28 eV in this material. These results confirm the strongly correlated electronic structure of this compound and underpin the previously conjectured paradigm of emergent unconventional superconductivity in doped Sr$_2$IrO$_{4}$.

Influence of multiplet structure on photoemission spectra of spin-orbit driven Mott insulators: application to $\bf{Sr_2IrO_4}$

Most of the low-energy effective descriptions of spin-orbit driven Mott insulators consider spin orbit coupling (SOC) as a second order perturbation to electron-electron interactions. However, when SOC is comparable to anisotropic Hund's coupling, such as in Ir, validity of this formally weak-SOC approach is not a priori known. Depending on the relative strength of SOC and anisotropic Hund's coupling, different descriptions of the multiplet structure should be employed in the weak and strong SOC limits, \textit{viz.} \textit{LS} and \textit{jj} coupling schemes, respectively. We investigate the implications of both the coupling schemes on the low-energy effective $t-J$ model and calculate the angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectra using self-consistent Born approximation. In particular, we obtain the ARPES spectra of quasi-two-dimensional square-lattice iridate ${\rm Sr_2IrO_4}$ in both weak and strong SOC limits. The differences in the limiting cases are understood in terms of the composition and relative energy splittings of the multiplet structure. Our results indicate that the LS coupling scheme yields better agreement with the experiment, thus providing an indirect evidence for the validity of LS coupling scheme for iridates. We also discuss the implications for other metal ions with strong SOC.

Correlation induced electron-hole asymmetry in quasi-2D iridates

We determine the motion of a charge (hole or electron) added to the Mott insulating, antiferromagnetic (AF) ground-state of quasi-2D iridates such as Ba 2 IrO 4 or Sr 2 IrO 4 . We show that correlation effects, calculated within the self-consistent Born approximation, render the hole and electron case very different. An added electron forms a spin-polaron, which closely resembles the well-known cuprates, but the situation of a removed electron is far more complex. Many-body 5d 4 configurations form which can be singlet and triplets of total angular momentum J and strongly affect the hole motion between AF sublattices. This not only has important ramifications for the interpretation of (inverse-)photoemission experiments of quasi-2D iridates but also demonstrates that the correlation physics in electron- and hole-doped iridates is fundamentally different.
