The Square Root Problem and Subnormal Aluthge Transforms of Recursively Generated Weighted Shifts

For recursively generated shifts, we provide definitive answers to two outstanding problems in the theory of unilateral weighted shifts: the Subnormality Problem ({\bf SP}) (related to the Aluthge transform) and the Square Root Problem ({\bf SRP}) (which deals with Berger measures of subnormal shifts). We use the Mellin Transform and the theory of exponential polynomials to establish that ({\bf SP}) and ({\bf SRP}) are equivalent if and only if a natural functional equation holds for the canonically associated Mellin transform. For $p$--atomic measures with $p \le 6$, our main result provides a new and simple proof of the above-mentioned equivalence. Subsequently, we obtain an example of a $7$--atomic measure for which the equivalence fails. This provides a negative answer to a problem posed by G.R. Exner in 2009, and to a recent conjecture formulated by R.E. Curto et al in 2019.

Propagation Phenomena for Operator-Valued Weighted Shifts

This paper is devoted to the study of propagation phenomena for $2$--hyponormal, quadratically hyponormal, and cubically hyponormal operator-valued weighted shifts. \ First, we show that every {\it quadratically} hyponormal matrix-valued weighted shift with two equal weights ({\it excluding the initial weight}) is flat. \ Second, we show that a {\it cubically} hyponormal operator-valued weighted shift with two equal weights ({\it possibly including the initial weight}) is flat. \ Next, we introduce a {\it local flatness} notion for matrix-valued weighted shifts. \ We prove that $2$--hyponormal (in particular, subnormal) matrix-valued weighted shifts satisfy this stronger propagation phenomenon. \ As a result, we prove a {\it structural decomposition theorem} for $2$--hyponormal matrix-valued weighted shifts.

The Local Operator Moment Problem on $\mathbb{R}$

We study the connections between operator moment sequences ${\mathcal T}=\displaystyle(T_n)_{n\in\mathbb{Z}_+}$ of self-adjoint operators on a complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and the local moment sequences $\langle{\mathcal T}x,x\rangle = (\langle T_nx,x\rangle)_{n\in\mathbb{Z}_+}$ for arbitrary $x\in \mathcal{H}$. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for solving the operator moment problem on $\mathbb{R}$, and we show that these criteria are automatically valid on compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}$. Applications of the compact case are used to study subnormal operator weighted shifts. A Stampfli-type propagation theorem for subnormal operator weighted shifts is also established. In addition, we discuss the validity of Tchakaloff's Theorem for operator moment sequences with compact support. In the case of a recursively generated sequence of self-adjoint operators, necessary and sufficient conditions for an affirmative answer to the operator recursive moment problem are provided, and the support of the associated representing operator-valued measure is described.

A Combinatorial Formula for Recursive Operator Sequences and Applications

We study sequences of bounded operators \((T_n)_{n \ge 0}\) on a complex separable Hilbert space \(\mathcal{H}\) that satisfy a linear recurrence relation of the form $$ T_{n+r} = A_0 T_n + A_1 T_{n+1} + \cdots + A_{r-1} T_{n+r-1} \quad(\textrm{for all } n\ge 0), $$ where the coefficients \(A_0, A_1, \dots, A_{r-1}\) are pairwise commuting bounded operators on \(\mathcal{H}\). \ Such relations naturally arise in the context of the operator-valued moment problem, particularly in the study of flat extensions of block Hankel operators. \ Our first goal is to derive an explicit combinatorial formula for \(T_n\). As a concrete application, we provide an explicit expression for the powers of an operator-valued companion matrix. \ In the special case of scalar coefficients $A_k=a_kI_\mathcal{H}$, with $a_k\in\mathbb{R}$, we recover a Binet-type formula that allows the explicit computation of the powers and the exponential of algebraic operators in terms of Bell polynomials.

On some properties of $n$-EP and $n$-hypo-EP operators

This article, is devoted to $n$-EP and $n$-hypo-EP operators. We give some characteristic properties of these two classes and various links with other known classes in the literature, especially the classes of EP, SD, hypo-EP and $n$-normal operators.

Point-Dimension Theory (Part I): The Point-Extended Box Dimension

This article is an introductory work to a larger research project devoted to pure, applied and philosophical aspects of dimension theory. It concerns a novel approach toward an alternate dimension theory foundation: the point-dimension theory. For this purpose, historical research on this notion and related concepts, combined with critical analysis and philosophical development proved necessary. Hence, our main objective is to challenge the conventional zero dimension assigned to the point. This reconsideration allows us to propose two new ways of conceiving the notion of dimension, which are the two sides of the same coin. First as an organization; accordingly, we suggest the existence of the Dimensionad, an elementary particle conferring dimension to objects and space-time. The idea of the existence of this particle could possibly adopted as a projection to create an alternative way to unify quantum mechanics and Einstein's general relativity. Secondly, in connection with Boltzmann and Shannon entropies, dimension appears essentially as a comparison between entropies of sets. Thus, we started from the point and succeeded in constructing a point-dimension notion allowing us to extend the principle of box dimension in many directions. More precisely, we introduce the notion of point-extended box dimension in the large framework of topological vector spaces, freeing it from the notion of metric. This general setting permits us to treat the case of finite, infinite and invisible dimensions. This first part of our research project focuses essentially on general properties and is particularly oriented towards establishing a well founded framework for infinite dimension. Among others, one prospect is to test the possibility of using other types of spaces as a setting for quantum mechanics, instead of limiting it to the exclusive Hilbertian framework.

Square root problem and Subnormal Aluthge transforms

For a non negative measure $μ$ with $p$ atoms, we study the relation between the Square Root Problem of $μ$ and the problem of subnormality of ${\tilde W_μ}$ the Aluthge transform of the associated unilateral weighted shift. We use an approach based on uniquely represented elements in the support of $μ*μ$. We first show that if ${\tilde W_μ}$ is subnormal, then $2p-1\le card(supp(μ*μ))\le [\frac{(p-1)^2+6}{2}]$. We rewrite several results known for finitely atomic measure having at most five atoms and give a complete solution for measures six atoms.

On Indecomposable triples associated with nilpotent operators

We consider in this paper the family of triples $(V, T, U),$ where $ V$ is a finite dimensional space, $T $ is a nilpotent linear operator on $V$ and $U $ is an invariant subspace of $T$. Denote $[U]= ker(T_{|U})$, and $n_U= dim([U] )$. Our main goal is to investigate possible classification of indecomposable triples. The obtained classification depends on the order of nilpotency $p$, on $n_U$ and on $n_V$. Complete classifications are given for arbitrary $p$, when $n_U=1$, and when $n_U=2$ and $n_V \le 3$. The case $ p \le 5$, treated in \cite{ring} is recaptured by using constructive proofs based on linear algebra tools. The case $p\ge 6$, where the number of indecomposable triples is infinite, is also investigated.

The quintic complex moment problem

Let $γ^{(m)} \equiv \{ γ_{ij} \}_{0 \leq i +j \leq m}$ be a given complex-valued sequence. The truncated complex moment problem (TCMP in short) involves determining necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a positive Borel measure $μ$ on $\mathbb{C}$ (called a representing measure for $γ^{(m)}$) such that $γ_{ij} = \int \overline{z}^i z^j dμ$ for $0 \leq i +j \leq m$. The TCMP has been completely solved only when $m= 1, 2, 3, 4$. We provide in this paper a concrete solution to the quintic TCMP (that is, when $m = 5$). We also study the cardinality of the minimal representing measure. Based on the bivariate recurrences sequences's properties with some Curto-Fialkow's results, our method intended to be useful for all odd-degree moment problems.

Complex moment problem and recursive relations

We introduce a new strategy in solving the truncated complex moment problem. To this aim we investigate recursive doubly indexed sequences and their characteristic polynomials. A characterization of recursive doubly indexed \emph{moment} sequences is provided. As a simple application, we obtain a computable solution to the complex moment problem for cubic harmonic characteristic polynomials of the form $z^3+az+b\overline{z}$, where $a$ and $b$ are arbitrary real numbers. We also recapture a recent result due to Curto-Yoo given for cubic column relations in $M(3)$ of the form $Z^3=itZ+u\overline{Z}$ with $t,u$ real numbers satisfying some suitable inequalities. Furthermore, we solve the truncated complex moment problem with column dependence relations of the form $Z^{k+1}= \sum\limits_{0\leq n+ m \leq k} a_{nm} \overline{Z}^n Z^m$ ($a_{nm} \in \mathbb{C}$).

The Multivariable moment problems and recursive relations

Let $β\equiv \{ β_\mathbf{i} \}_{\mathbf{i} \in \mathbb{Z}_+^d}$ be a $d$-dimensional multisequence. Curto and Fialkow, have shown that if the infinite moment matrix $M(β)$ is finite-rank positive semidefinite, then $β$ has a unique representing measure, which is $rank M(β)$-atomic. Further, let $β^{(2n)} \equiv \{ β_\mathbf{i} \}_{\mathbf{i} \in \mathbb{Z}_+^d, \mid \mathbf{i} \mid \leq 2n}$ be a given truncated multisequence, with associated moment matrix $M(n)$ and $rank M(n)=r$, then $β^{(2n)}$ has an $r$-atomic representing measure $μ$ supported in the semi-algebraic set $K=\{ (t_1, \ldots, t_d) \in \mathbb{R}^d : q_j(t_1, \ldots, t_d) \geq 0, 1\leq j\leq m \}$, where $q_j \in \mathbb{R}[t_1, \ldots, t_d]$, if $M(n)$ admits a positive rank-preserving extension $M(n+1)$ and the localizing matrices $M_{q_j}(n +[\frac{°q_j +1}{2}])$ are positive semidefinite; moreover, $μ$ has precisely $rank M(n) - rank M_{q_j}(n +[\frac{°q_j +1}{2}])$ atoms in $\mathcal{Z}(q_j) \equiv \{ t\in \mathbb{R}^d: q_j(t)=0 \}$. In this paper, we show that every truncated moment sequence $β^{(2n)}$ is a subsequence of an infinite recursively generated multisequence, we investigate such sequences to give an alternative proof of Curto-Fialkow's results and also to obtain a new interesting results.
